Hi! My name is Karina and I am an interior architect specializing in bars, restaurants, and hotel design. I also got knowledge in designing ephemeral, retail, and domestic spaces. For me, the design consists of details. I believe that good lighting can change the whole space and good graphic presentation touches the eye 100% more.

La Whiskeria

W H I S K Y B A R I N B A R C E L O N A

I had the honour to design the largest Whisky bar in Barcelona. They were going to have the biggest whisky collection in Spain, high class cocktail menu, simple kitchen with Scottish snacks & a space to educate people about whisky. The selected space was 250m2 and used to be a pizza bar.

The concept of the place is simple: all about whisky. I divided an enormous space into smaller areas, and each area got its own theme.

The entrance is inspired by the American hotels from 1920s, light and classy, huge sofas and old furniture - the place dedicated to American whiskey: bourbon & rye. Only by seeing an area you imagine “high class” Americans sitting there, enjoying their whisky and cigars while talking about culture and politics.

Second and the biggest area, the middle bar, is inspired by the Scottish grandma’s house: bordeaux walls, dark furniture, “whisky” barrels, large carpets and cabinets full of whisky from a different countries. On the left side there is a long bar, which was inspired by the Scottish rivers with the purest water, where all the distilleries are located. Huge selection of whisky bottles from all other the world located in the cabinets from antique shops bring a concept of the home library or cabinets of curiosities.

Imperial table and a wonderful buffet with a mirror in the middle of the room, reflects all the bar and makes you feel even more like in a big family house.

Continuing a pass, there is a small private room which was dedicated to Irish monks who were sailors and were the first ones to bring whisky to Ireland, and where first whisky distillery was located. That little space is vertically divided in frames that remind church windows and a little curtain that surrounds the walls inspired by sails, dark brown booth is inspired by monks clothes.

The bathroom is inspired by the islands of Japan, surrounded by water and full of sacuras in which casks Japanese whisky are often matured. It is all black and gold, as black colour in Japan is often used for samurai class and gold is a symbol of sun, that is related to whisky.

The last room which is a speakeasy hidden room, also degustation and educational space, is inspired by Asia and their whiskies. The used colours are ocean green and purple - most representative Asian colours.

The room is full of maps and educational whisky objects that reminds Marco Polo’s and Vasco de Gamas’ trips exploring India & most of Asia, unseen things and knowledge exchanged between European and Asian cultures.

There was a lot of whisky exploration done and history research in order to design this fantastic and unique bar.

Bringing it all together in such big square footage and combining all the stories was a big challenge, which turned out into a beautiful space for people to enjoy and learn about whiskies and drinking culture, spiced with an amazing service and well tasting cocktails that compliments the whole experience.

Flax&Kale house is a project that was born to find the roots of the company.

Knowing that the new location is so special - the heart of Barcelona Las Ramblas - we concluded that it is a perfect place for a flagship store. The main objective of this flagship is to let our customers know the roots,

concept, specialty in the kitchen, and history of the brand through the selected materials, recovered elements, and historical data.

Taking as a reference Teresa Carles (the founder of Flax&Kale) and her first restaurant “Paradiso” which opened in Lleida, we worked on the concept of the

typical Catalan farmhouse “la Masia”, the one that reminded us of the main characteristics of Flax&Kale like maintenance of historical essence, promoting family values, inclusivity & the sustainability. Attributes that are highlighted in the project, turning this restaurant into a home for everyone.

KOMBUCHA BAR & COWORKING SPACE

The space consists of the three floors restaurant attached to the hotel. We decided to maintain the basement floor as the main kitchen, offices, and storage. On the ground floor, the central area is an open kitchen mostly for cold dishes surrounded by sitting areas. On the left side, we got a kombucha bar with big barrels where users can mix their own kombucha. On the left side there is a bread and pizza oven right next to the window, cause the idea is to invite people from the street to the fresh bread smell and show them the process of baking bread from the outside. Behind the oven, there is a grab&go food and merch market where you can buy food to go or Flax&Kale representative clothes and souvenirs.

Behind the kitchen, there are toilets dedicated to Barcelona street art, graffiti, and collaboration with local artists.

Following the stairs on the back, we appear on the second floor and run into the reception. The main area is a fast-casual restaurant, a big, clear space with individual tables or shared sofas. There is a separate hotel area that works for breakfast in the mornings and as a lounge area in the evening. On the left side, there is a drinks bar where our guests can have special Flax&Kale cocktails before or after dinner. Next to the drinks bar, there is a speakeasy with a special degustation menu, sitting next to the big shared tables you can perfectly see everything that happens in the kitchen and how your food is prepared. During the day this area also serves for classes, presentations, and workshops. The rest of the second floor is occupied by the kitchen and vermouth bar - a typical Catalan drink served with anchovy.

FAST CASUAL RESTAURANT

We were also able to place an outside terrace on the street. The look that was given to the terrace reminds a “patio” of “Masia”, typical wooden folding chairs and tables, big square parasols and a lot of plants surrounding the area that brings freshness and shadows on a hot summer day.

SPEAKEASY

In this huge place in terms of materials, we try to use organic and traditional materials usually applied in “Masias” like wood, rustic bricks, mud, handmade tiles, etc. The chosen furniture was made by local designers crafted with organic materials, recycled textiles, and plastics as well as decorative lighting. We also created powerful branding and merchandising so the brand is easily recognizable.

In the whole process of the creation of the Flax&Kale flagship store, we tried to be the most honest, sustainable, and respective not only for the values of the brand but also for the earth’s needs, understanding that the future depends on our choices and it brought us a great final result.

Hotel 7 Sins 5

The project is about the 7 floors, adult-only, five stars grand luxury hotel located in the central area of Barcelona. When we went to check the building, number 7 remained in our kinds. That was the beginning of the concept. After huge research on what is related to Nr. 7 we stopped by 7 sins. It seemed mysterious, interesting, and a lot to explore inspiring the hotel in this theme, so each area had its own sin.

The Lobby “Envidia” is located on the ground floor and inspired by envy.

It was a place where people look at each other and judge others by their clothes, couples, style, etc. We designed a place where the way to the reception was playing the role of a fashion podium and all the sitting areas around it were made for “judges” to sit and watch. The space was also divided by a kind of latticework made out of glass and mirrors inspired by envy animal — snake — skin, also working as a way to see other people without them noticing it. The dominant color is blue (color of envy) which we used mostly on furniture and walls, which also made a feeling of a ground floor, with not too much sunlight.

On the first floor, we located the restaurant inspired by gluttony (excessive eating and drinking) and the business center inspired by greed (pursuit of material possessions).

The 3 Michelin stars restaurant “Gula” is made in red and dark red colors as it is a color of gluttony. It has a wine bodega — huge glass wine fringe behind a drinking bar, a central bar with Teppanyaki grills, a big shared table inspired by “the platform” movie table, and a private room that can be working as one, divided into two or also opened for public use. “Gula” has a big terrace which we dedicated

to the “Alice in Wonderland” tea party. It has a huge dessert and drinks bar in the middle, the building walls are covered with plants and flowers, and the furniture is comfortable to sit a chill after a full meal having your favorite tea with a cupcake.

Business center - “Avaricia” is made with golden tones, natural wood parquet, leather sofas, and marble tables. It contains a lounge area with comfortable sofas and a little bar, a few smaller meeting rooms with all the necessary media, and one big auditorium that can also be divided into smaller spaces. The ambience there is very classy and luxurious.

The second floor contains a Spa center inspired by pride (seeking perfection in yourself) and a Gym inspired by wrath (a neutral act of anger).

7th floor, Bar&Club “Lujuria” & a presidential suite

“Soberbia” Spa center mostly contains purple (color of pride), but also green and blue tones, combined with grey stone and wood as we inspired a spa center in mystic beautiful creatures like nymphs, mermaids, and fairies. We have a tea room, the massage rooms, a central pull with a massage waterfall and two saunas by the sides, Jacuzzis, and a terrace for sunbathing. The idea was to have a complete and high-quality service, so the customers feel beautiful and relaxed after using it.

The “Ira” gym is all about taking out your anger and negative energy. We placed the reception where you can get towels and other sports supplies right in front of the elevators.

Behind the reception we got changing rooms and showers. There are two sports rooms: one contains exercise machines and loud energizing music, and the other is an empty room for yoga classes and similar sports. Both rooms are located on the street side of the building, so while doing sports you can watch the movement downstairs or imagine yourself running in the city. The yoga room has a glass wall, so you can feel the air and blessing light from both sides if you want, but also can use curtains for more privacy.

On the last floor, there is a huge terrace, club, and a cocktail bar “Lujuria”. The whole area is inspired by lust (seeking of sex for pleasure).

In this space are used bloody orange tones and scenographic lights. We designed a continuous curvy sitting area which is assembled for the cocktail bar. There is also a huge stage for every-night shows and a little circular cage stage for a dancer to perform which is also surrounded by the sitting area. The “Lujuria” bar invites visitors to enjoy not only at night time but also to have a drink or try an infinity pool during the day on the rooftop terrace. Lujuria is all about crazy dances, parties, performances, first kisses, and fun.

On the 7th floor, there is also a huge presidential suite room with a private terrace, pool, dining room, and bedroom. It is divided from “Lujuria” bar by a private room in the bar, that can use only the guest from a suit. It is a room where all the sins can come together.

Other rooms are located on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th floors. All of them are inspired by sloth (laziness and lack of work), made with light blue and white tones. After all the 6 sins experience we want our customers to rest, be lazy and enjoy their comfy beds, eat their breakfast in the room, take a hot bubble bath and of course, use a unique “call for champagne” button. Junior suite rooms also have a balcony with a jacuzzi and sofas, a bathtub in the room, and a large bathroom with a self-drying closet and a vanity table area.

In every area of the hotel, we tried to 100% represent a corresponding sin by using colors, textures, and interior elements which give such a space double meaning. We want our guests to have a full 7 sins experience by enjoying themselves in each area of the hotel which is perfectly planned to the most minor details.

The Tattoo Cave BIKER

Academic project of a bar creation that has represented my childhood. The most difficult part of this exercise was choosing the topic. As Lithuania is a cold country, in my memories we were always waiting for summer to come. Holidays, warm weather, and a lot more things we were waiting for that season.

Especially I was looking forward to a motorcycle season opening party. Since my uncle brought his motorbike to every opening of the season, I had the opportunity to ride with a thousand other bikers around.

That feeling was incredible.

One of those summers my parents sent me to summer camp where I learned to do temporary tattoos. That was my very first business in making tattoos for my classmates and earning my own money.

Growing up I also started to have a big interest in cinema.

It was not a big surprise how fast I fell in love with the biker series “Sons of Anarchy”. Later, looking for more movies on a

similar topic, I introduced myself to “The Place Beyond The Pines“. The movie’s aesthetics were so different but so attractive: darkness, neon lights, gasoline stations, and laundromats. The feeling of the big city at night.

Bringing all those memories together I had a clear idea of what my bar or better say biker club, is going to be. The facade looks like a laundromat, with a circle of windows illuminated by blue and red neon lights, where tattoo cabins are located. The central washing machine is an entrance. Inside there is a huge open space with a bar on the right side, a dancing area and tables in the

middle, and the area with a more private sofa on the left.

How could we go without the pool tables in the biker bar?

They are located at the end of the back, surrounded by leather sofas. The huge long bar mostly specialized in whisky is illuminated by red neons, made out of steel and there is a storage room behind the back bar. The bar is coronated with two choppers and the neon sign “Ride or Die”. On the right side of the bar, some stairs lead you to the mezzanine: VIP area, and DJ console, or if you turn right to the bathrooms.

Moto Cave

For the main area, I was inspired by the biker movies, clubs, and bars which usually are made out of basic cheap materials and look more like men’s caves. I used a bare brick wall in the whole bar, dark painted wood on the walls in a pool tables area, leather sofas and stools, steel tables, and metallic grinds, for creating bar texture. All is illuminated by soft warm light and red neon to transmit that “badass” atmosphere and make you feel like in a movie.

On the other side, I wanted my tattoo cabins to look very clean and modern, but also made from a simple material - white tiles. The furniture is modern: high-quality professional tattooing leather chairs, a steel chest of drawers, and steel shelves. Vintage tattoo posters on the walls and voila! Modern clean and well-organized space is illuminated by blue neon lights when is empty and working white light when somebody is making a tattoo.

The following result was an exact representation of my perfect bar, based on my childhood memories and feelings. I believe that by putting those two aesthetics together and enjoying so much the process of creation of a “Tattoo Cave” I was able to produce that special atmosphere and a desire to visit this bar from everybody who was following the story.

#McQueenIsAlive Alexander McQueen brand introductión to Spain by memorial fashion show, including full user experience of 40 days

40 days This project is dedicated to one of the most famous “dark” high fashion designers - Alexander Lee Mcqueen. He knew how to convert woman into a real diva, fashion show into a theatre and tell the story which shocks the majority, using dark and melancholic notes of high fashion, and this is exactly how I wanted this project to be, mysterious, memorial, dark, luxury and with a story about greatest haute couture. I also worked it out as a brand introduction to Spain event, to tell the world that McQueen will always be alive as a brand and as a style, and even now it keeps expanding and growing.

The event is created as a memorial fashion show in a small convent in Barcelona. It was inspired on the whole A.Mcqueen’s career when he was alive. It starts 40 days before the show. There will be VIP guests and some of Mcqueen’s dedicated fans who are supposed to find the invitation and catch it with a special app. It will be a well-thought user experience starting from invitations until the last dance step in after party, including hotel, the show, some symbolic McQ objects and a lot of other things.

Two days before the show everybody is invited to the different luxury hotels around Barcelona. When the person arrives, there is a specially prepared hotel room for a Mcqueen guest, where they find a small white box with brand’s logo. In the box there is a mirror which actually serves like an personalised invitation/ticket for the show. There is also a lighter with a Mcqueen’s skull and a label “in one moment you will need me” and a small card that indicates time when the driver will arrive to take the guest to the event place.

The venue Convent dels Àngels of Barcelona for this event has not been chosen accidentally. This historical place is a convent, built for Dominican nuns in the city of Barcelona in 1562, making a reference to places Alexander Mcqueen was choosing for his fashion shows like Spitalfields church or Conciergie in Paris.

There are three domed chambers left from the original gothic style building, it contains one shed made of five sections with side chapels between buttresses making the place devine and solemn, exactly what we need for honoring such a special designer.

On the day of event there is a huge projection on the main wall of the building with images of backstage from the previous shows of Alexander. That is the way to tell the user step by step what is going to happen there, because until now the only thing they know that is a special event related with A.Mcqueen and his brand.

There are neon black lights in the whole place which makes the guest see it in a different way, but they also reflect on the stage that is made out of mirror. The whole place is dark, where white light flashes are unexpectedly surprising the guests.

The mysterious atmosphere is strengthened with a smoke effect and national Scottish music.

During the show there are ornamental projections on the extended fabrics on the stage that serve as a portal for models to come in and out from the backstage.

You can also see moving shadows of the models behind those fabrics which create a vision of two different worlds: living (world of alive) and shadow (world of the dead).

In the middle, a mine gothic church rose window is supposed to be, there is a huge projection of Alexander Mcqueen head changing to the skull in a dark purple neon and grey colours. It is a logo specially designed for this show which means even if personally Alexander is not here, his soul and his heart, the style he left and his sense of high fashion will always be on this stage.

The main surprise the public is going to have when the last model steps out from a stage and suddenly there is an Alexander Lee Mcqueen hologram which looks so real, so alive, walking through the whole stage and disappearing in the end with words “Thanks for coming, McQueen is always in your hearts...” and that is how the memorial fashion show dramatically ends.

This project is an exhibition of the new materials based on a concept of “Alice in Wonderland” story and interaction of fashion and trends in material world. It is made in the way that every person can better understand the new material: touch it, play with it, step on it, sit on it, wear it and so on.

To explain the exhibition space and to decide the future position of exhibits, I first simplified the project space dividing it into squares, one for each trend. The next step was to explain the trends: decide finishes and colours: walls, flooring, supports and sort out the materials for exhibit. The graphics and introduction to this exposition is made with a transparent base. The explanation is based on the window, where in certain moments of the day, the sun makes a beautiful surrealistic game of shadows, making a space feel even more magical. The information card of every exhibit is also placed on a transparent square, giving us a possibility to place it in the way we want, and not interacting with material and space colour.

Another contract project that is about to making a clothes shop next to the beach.

It was made with random organic lines, that unifies all the space to a big wooden loft, so the user can flow through the space where everything comes together, becoming one space without any furniture or other shop compliments. All the objects we can find in this shop perfectly come together with space shapes, because it was made with calculations and placement of all the needed furniture in the moment of creating a loft. Wooden space resemble

that nature feeling and organic waves, that flows in all the space, reminds about being next to the beach. On the left there is a big window through whole the wall, and in the end you have a ramp to go to the second floor where you can find changing rooms and more exposure. The second floor is not as big as the first floor, from the balcony upstairs you can see what happens bellow.

With those organic shapes the user is used to feel the sea atmosphere, as it can remind how the sea wind creates forms on the sand.

A concept art project made on 2nd degree in Elisava design school coloborating with: Ignacio Ezcurra, Victor Freire, Marc Pino, in 2014.

A project where the class had to make an artwork based on one of the assigned cities from Italo Calvino book “invisible cities”. The next step was to create an exhibition for those artworks. The space we had, was at Elisava’s exhibitions hall, where we were supposed to expose 15 projects. We decided to use the large stylised map of Europe and Asia, as a connection between the book and the strange cities dominating in the stories of the silk road (commercial route between Europe and Asia surrounded by mystical stories). It looked interesting to connect the map with a project, as the story tells about different cities and in every segment where you can relate the certain extent. So, as we started to talk about mystics, we chose mirror as a main confusing material. The floor, front wall and exhibitors were made out of mirror. All the exhibits were inclined sofrom one special point at the entrance, you could see a reflection of the map, which is placed on the celling. Every project had it’s own place, depending on how the “invisible city” can be related to some countries on the map.

As the floor was also made of mirror tiles, the visitor was basically walking the silk road to see all the projects. Finally other walls were painted black, that gave the exhibition even more mystery, and we used blue and purple coloured indirect lights, that reflected in the mirror creating a confusing view. Of course, every exhibit had his own spotlight, so the visitor could read the story and the explanation of the artwork. We also placed the expo description on the left-side wall, and it was the first stop in which the users flow before the “silk road”. It was confusing and mysterious space full of reflections and lights, which made visitors think about the connection between worlds and people.
