As a keen and long experienced horse owner I am often surprised by the new generation’s lack of understanding that an animal like a horse is an investment for life, as is our dog, child or dare I say it, a relationship with a significant other. How healthy we are in relationship to our world is very much reflected in the attention we give our horses and environment. A lack of “right relationship” results in countless horses (earthly resources) used up from competition or racing and then discarded to the Dark Side of the horse industry- the sale yards and a destination unknown. It is a sad fact of life that horses, being such a large animal require a huge investment of time and knowledgeable care, not to mention the cost of land nowadays. Horses are often seen in the most atrociously neglectful circumstances simply because hard times have meant no easy solution for their owners, abandonment seemingly the easy option. A tragedy for all concerned. If we are in the privileged position of owning a horse one of the best investments we can make is to ensure that they are healthy and trained well so that should you ever have to make the difficult decision to sell or re-home them, your horse is more likely to be guaranteed a good home.

Starting from the ground up The land that you keep your horse on is critical to understand when thinking about prevention of disease. Soil type, the diversity of plants and chemical history is something that I feel is not well considered when looking at agistment centres or areas of land to buy when looking for accommodation for your new horse.

4 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

If you can get this right you will be 99% on the way to preventing disease caused by toxins, poor fencing and inappropriate pasture. Horses are best kept on poorer pasture, with little superphosphate history. Dangerous weeds should be mowed, pulled or competed out with low GI grasses like phalaris and other native grass varieties best for the region. Testing pasture for deficiency or excess vitamins and minerals is a good idea. However, don’t be tempted to “balance” the pasture with synthetic vitamins and minerals too quickly. The only pasture that requires this kind of balancing act is a high oxalate one, where providing calcium and magnesium rich feed is essential. Otherwise treating the soil first with soil conditioners is your first job! Feed supplementation should be done on an individualised basis using herbs and whole feeds. Mineral supplements can be useful. Vitamin supplements (Vit A, B, C, D and K) are generally not needed especially if they are synthetically derived. If you get a basic herb combination correct you can support the gut health and the microbiota which will supply a lot of the essential trace elements, vitamins and peak nutrition required for optimum health.

Tip... Know your horse’s body score and learn

to read a healthy strong body type from a pudgy toxic insulin resistant prone horse.

Gut health - The Microbiome You may have read my previous articles on the microbiome and the inroads being made in understanding human and horse microbial populations and the impact that healthy microbiomes have on the holistic health picture - hence why we start with the soil!

Gut health can be seriously improved with some lovely herbs and natural minerally rich clays. I have been field testing a new combination which we are calling Equigesta-pre, which contains Brewer’s yeast (as a source of selenium and pre-biotic), Fennel powder (traditionally used as pancreatic support and digestive improver), Liquorice powder (tones the gut wall as well as adrenal support), Chamomile as a parasympathetic support as well as Slippery Elm and Aloe Vera powder to support and nourish Mucin production in the whole of the GIT. The results we are seeing from a very small amount of this 100% natural powder, given daily in the horse feed, is demonstrating yet again that appropriate amounts of the correct herbs will offer amazing health benefits such as obviously reducing systemic inflammatory responses from metabolic toxins to easing pain from an inflamed gut.

Agelessness is all about the anti-oxidants and oils!! Joints, ligaments, bones, tendons and connective fascia all need to be free from “sticky” inflammation and be well lubricated so connecting surfaces glide over each other easily. When looking at cells and what they require for nourishment it is understandable that if you or your horse is dehydrated as well as have inflammatory responses occurring because of a sluggish elimination system or a highly processed diet, you and your horse will age very quickly and look stiff and sore, deteriorating slowly. The best nourishment comes in the form of seed oils; providing essential fatty acids to keep

SUMMER 2017

everything well plumped up. Herbs high in silica aid tissue repair and using herbs high in Allantoin (a cell proliferant) is useful. When thinking about what may age us or our horse, often it is assumed that once you reach a certain age you just start deteriorating – you know how it is - we reach for the reading glasses after age 50 - and we just assume that this is the way of it! This is not true if you can keep the somatic system as clean and as well-nourished as possible with a clean environment and clean feed. Adding whole herbs and seeds like ground Linseed and ground Rosehips is extremely

beneficial. The lignin provides nourishing natural lubrication. Hormones responsible for suppleness and cellular repair are also being stimulated by the essential fatty acids ensuring that the DNA sequencing is correct.

Anti-Oxidants Inflammation, toxins and insufficient nourishment are all responsible for aging and mutate the DNA that creates rouge cells (like cancer) or slow repair. Super anti-oxidants (bioflavonoid compounds found in many foods) are well known to help protect the cells from oxidation and breakdown, another important point when discussing antiaging in both people and animals.

Interestingly Oxygen is our friend in so many ways - but is the enemy to cells with no antioxidant protection (like a cancer cell) which is why increasing oxygen in your blood is a good thing to do to prevent cancer. However, this will also age your cells if you don’t have the antioxidants working to protect your healthy cells. One of the highest quality super anti-oxidants well researched is Maritime Pine Bark extract. I wild craft this herb and manufacture this extract to be included in many of our human prescription products such as face creams and in our super immune booster and vitality formulas. I also use this herb as part of our cancer support programs in the cases of Melanoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

About the Author – Catherine McDowell Medicine of Mother Nature… I was first introduced to the concept of Herbal Lore when I was very young. I think one of the earliest influences I can remember was from my grandparents, who were very traditional Bathurst farmers of the well known Cox family. My grandfather had the “people’s home library” which was a compendium of all kinds of home cures. Herbal Medicine is, at its core, studying nature and the humanities. It’s about observing our diet, our environment and how we respond. Keeping a balance is difficult in the modern era as we are no longer interacting with our environment in the same way as we may have done even as little as a 100 years ago. As a Dorothy Hall graduate working along side the well known Robert McDowell for many years and furthering my education with Dennis Stewart, I have developed my own unique application of herbal remedies. Working primarily with animals (Horses and Dogs) has been the most rewarding. Having seen herbs work so well in so many cases has proven to me time and again the under-utilised power of herbal medicine. It is heartening to see now Vets, and some Medical Doctors seeing the traditional application of herbs as useful. My comprehensive service includes free animal consultations 24/7 via my web site, and face to face consultation at 61 Corporation Avenue, Bathurst NSW 2795. CLINIC:

Dr J H Stewart BVSc BSc PhD Equine Veterinarian and Consultant Nutritionist

Few of us ever want to hear the vet say ‘...your horse may be a wobbler’. It’s right up there with colic, laminitis and founder as a cause for concern and of an unknown future. Understanding of the signs, tests and treatment options can help with decisions for the best outcome. A ’wobbler’ is a horse with a damaged spinal cord. The most common cause in Australia and New Zealand is malformation of the neck vertebrae such that the spinal cord gets compressed or squashed to various degrees. Affected horses are usually less than 2 years old, and Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, and Tennessee Walking Horses have a higher incidence than Quarter Horses; Standardbreds and Arabians. Males are more commonly affected, as are horses that are well grown, and have a history or signs of other developmental orthopaedic diseases (DOD) such as OCD or physitis. Miniature horses are the only breed that has escaped diagnosis of wobbler syndrome. Wobblers are included in the category of DOD. DOD includes other syndromes caused by cartilage and bone aberrations — such as bent and twisted legs in foals, OC (osteochondrosis) and physitis, contracted tendons, osteochoncritis dissecans (OCD), subchondral bone cysts and malformation of the cuboidal bones of the carpus and tarsus. Other names you may come across for wobblers are: CVM (cervical vertebral malformation), CSM (cervical stenotic myelopathy), CCM (cervical compressive myelopathy) and CVSM (cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy). There are 2 wobbler syndromes – type 1 is due to one or more narrowings of the vertebral canal between the 1st and 5th neck vertebrae, signs worsen when the neck is flexed, mostly in 3 to 18 month old youngsters. Type II is when bone or tissue protrudes into the vertebral canal affecting the joints between the 6th neck vertebrae and the 1st thorax vertebrae, mostly seen in 18 month to 5 year olds. It is caused by bone and soft tissue abnormalities and usually involves the fifth and seventh cervical

8 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

vertebrae. This form of compression generally affects the horse’s forelimbs more severely. In older horses, wobbles can be caused by arthritic changes in the vertebrae. Both syndromes involve changes in the bone and cartilage in the vertebrae which impinges on the spinal cord. The back legs are usually affected most because the nerves that supply them travel on the outside of the spinal cord in the cervical (neck) area and are more easily damaged than nerves to the front limbs – which lie below the surface and deeper inside the spinal cord. Affected horses ‘wobble’ and are ‘ataxic’ because they’ve lost a sense of where their feet are. The most obvious sign is a ‘wobbly’ hind limb gait – similar to when a horse is tranquilised – but there are a whole range of more subtle signs. If the damage is mild the horse may have difficulty or reluctance changing leads and stopping smoothly, excess tail swishing while trotting, bunnyhopping during cantering, behavioural problems, injuries on front heels due to over-reaching – all of which lead to poor performance and are easily mistaken for hind limb issues. Other horses may seem to have a stiff neck, difficulty walking backwards, a base-wide stance, toedragging or abnormal wear on the front toes, knuckling of hind legs, be seen as clumsy, weak or ‘lazy’, stumble more than usual, give missteps, fall over, struggle to get up from lying down or appear ‘drunk’ have an abnormal stance and spasticity in all four legs, swaying of the trunk, incoordination, and uneven stride length and height — shortened stride, spastic or exaggerated gait. Severe damage can actually result in a horse that may fall and be unable to rise.

SUMMER 2017

It’s important to understand that other things can lead to ataxia, including, trauma, equine motor neuron disease, infectious disease (viral and bacterial) and parasite migration. We are so lucky in Australia that we don’t have equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), West Nile virus (WNV), eastern and western equine encephalitis, neurological equine herpes virus (EHV), Lyme disease and rabies – all of which result in clinical signs consistent with wobbler’s syndrome. Skull fractures can be caused by direct blows due to a kick from overcrowding, collision or from falling objects (branches etc). In some cases, a horse may fall and strike the skull on impact. Fractures of the cervical spine may occur due to falls, pulling back when restrained or a collision. Fractures of the thoracic spine may result following a fall backwards, or excessive pressure. Fractures of the lumbar spine can occur following a fall at high speed. Sacrum/coccygeal fractures may occur following a fall that causes a horse to sit on their haunches. A neurological exam can be performed by your veterinarian or by an experienced horse person (keeping safety in mind). The tests are not complicated, but the interpretation of the results does require some experience and good observation – taking a video of the horse allows you to track progress and it can be sent for other opinions if necessary. The following are some of the more basic tests:

The Horses Spinal Cord

• determine if the horse reacts to pressure placed on the back and pelvis - a wobbler will usually squat down – not due to pain but because of weakness. • the tail and anal tone may be more flaccid in a wobbler • pulling the tail to one side - wobblers are easily pulled to the side while walking and when the pressure is released, they overcorrect or sway to the side • wobblers walk abnormally up and down hills, looking as though they are ‘drunk or tranquilised, knuckling over on the hind fetlocks, walking on their toes coming up the hill, swivelling the toes and hocks to get enough strength to get up the hill • wobblers have difficulty backing-up and often just drag the heels slowly backwards

Cross section – narrowing of the vertebrae causing impingement to the spinal cord

• when free in a paddock, wobblers are often seen bunny hopping with the hind legs at a canter, on the incorrect lead behind, knuckling behind when trying to stop. Some mildly affected horses show a very impressive gait at the trot, one that makes dressage owners misty-eyed! Your veterinarian will conduct other neurological tests to assess the degree of neurological damage and spinal trauma that has occurred, the location of the damage and the grade of ataxia. After the neurological exam, the cause and extent of the damage must be determined. Radiographs reveal fractures, collapsed disc place, misalignments, narrowed spinal canal measurements and arthritic articular facets. Many times, more than one area is compressed. This is important when the different options for treatment are being considered. Depending on the findings and the urgency, a myelogram may be indicated to check for spinal cord compression, and a sample of spinal fluid to check for viruses and cancer. The best treatment depends on the degree of ataxia, the site of damage and your plans, hopes and expectations for your horse. To provide the best treatment and get the best outcome it is essential to have your veterinarian obtain a complete diagnosis as soon as possible. A wobbler that is not treated may deteriorate neurologically, occasionally to the point of injuring itself or others, especially when struggling to rise. In the short term, medical treatment with stall rest may provide some

benefit for a wobbler that is subtly affected. In the long term, however, frequently the animal will relapse when allowed unrestricted exercise or when placed in training. Until now, very limited options were available to horse owners when faced with a “wobbler”, most of them being euthanized. However, this option is not suitable for many horse owners. If the damage is very mild, anti-inflammatories, careful graded exercise and very tight nutrition control, with or without acupuncture, water therapy and physiotherapy may halt and correct the damage. Horses less than a year of age (and preferably less than 6 months) can be tried on a restrictive “Paced Diet”. This diet reduces intake of energy and protein and increases trace minerals. The essential elements are as follows: (1) immediately wean if still suckling; (2) feed free-choice grass hay with a low energy, nutrient-rich balancer. Foals are confined in a stall except for limited yard turnout time and no access to pasture. Although good results can occur for slightly affected foals, they can look poor as yearlings (nothing permanent, just not the way we are used to seeing them!) and breaking, training and racing should be delayed. It is important to identify the surgical candidates early to achieve a good outcome. Careful case selection is paramount to maximize the chances of success, and an extensive diagnostic work-up is needed. The prognosis depends on many things, including the degree of spinal damage. For horses with severe ataxia the prognosis may be guarded. Many wobblers that have been surgically treated are racing, showing, jumping and pleasure riding successfully, but the cost and convalescence are considerable. Your horse may take up to 18-24 months to reach maximum improvement. Genetic predisposition, excess dietary energy, rapid growth, physical trauma, decreased copper/increased zinc levels, or a combination of these factors are thought to be involved. The gender difference may result from the influence of estrogen and testosterone on growth rates. The two causes that are the easiest to control are nutritional imbalance and physical trauma. Trauma usually results from injury, particularly when a young horse is tied up for the first time or when a horse is cast in a stall. Avoid overfeeding energy and rapid growth spurts – especially

10 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

SUMMER 2017

high birth weights and rapid height and weight growth between 3 and 5 months of age. Ensure mineral intakes match requirements from before birth through to maturity. Aggressive nutritional management and controlled exercise coupled with early diagnosis have recently proven to be successful in some cases. The treatment is targeted at normalizing growth rates and allowing for proper bone remodeling within the cervical canal. Exercise is restricted in order to reduce further trauma to the spinal cord. Nutrition is focused on attention to appropriate calcium and phosphorus ratios and copper and zinc supplementation. A quality grass hay can serve as a source of roughage. This therapy takes time and patience before results are seen. Work closely with your veterinarian or equine nutritionist to establish your horse’s proper nutritional requirements. Wobbler syndrome is a devastating condition. It significantly impacts the athletic potential of affected horses and has significant financial and emotional effects. Owners are often left with a difficult decision regarding treatment once a diagnosis is made. Euthanasia should be strongly considered, as wobblers can be unsafe for horse and rider.

By Amy Snow & Nancy Zidonis It’s that glorious time of the year when we can stand in awe watching mare and foal nuzzle each other. How sweet it is to see the gangly-legged foal prance around his mother, nurse when he is hungry, and sleep under his mother’s protection. All you want for the young foal is to be healthy and grow strong. You can participate in supporting the foal’s health once he is about one to two months old. The first hours and weeks after the birth of the foal are critical mare-foal bonding time. It’s best not to interfere with these early stages of the foal’s development. Once the foal is starting to nibble hay and showing signs of independence from the mare, it’s a good time to begin offering the foal a hands-on, bodywork technique for balancing his energy.

SUMMER 2017

Tui Na / Acupressure-Massage Tui Na is the original, ancient Chinese form of acupressure-massage that has been used continuously and extensively throughout China for over 2000 years. Tui Na is pronounced “Tway” with a long “a” sound and “Nah.” It’s based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theories and concepts which promote the healthy, balanced flow energy throughout the body of human and animal alike. Tui Na techniques are gentle and non-invasive. By employing one of the relatively superficial Tui Na techniques, you can help the foal build his muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments, plus contribute to his neurological development. Your intent must be to enhance the harmonious flow of vital substances such as energy, blood, and other body fluids throughout the foal’s body. Mo Fa is a circular rubbing technique. This technique is known to support the Kidney’s ability to build bodily tissues, improve Stomach and Spleen function so that the foal’s entire body is well nourished, and also provide a calming and comforting effect.

Applying Mo Fa Actually, it’s wise for you to begin the session by giving the mare attention. She can probably benefit from the Mo Fa as well. The happier the mare is with you, the more relaxed and available the foal will be. Even before working with the foal, you need to spend time grooming the mare, offering Mo Fa, and letting her get to know you. When you feel the foal is comfortable and will accept your touch, you can begin a Tui Na session using the Mo Fa circular rubbing technique. Mo Fa can be performed along the foal’s spine starting behind the withers, continuing back toward the hindquarters, and ending before the foal’s tail as seen in the Bladder Meridian Chart.

Start by gently placing the palm of your hand on the foal’s back behind the withers to the side of his spine, not directly on his spine. Your opposite hand can rest comfortably near the foal’s shoulder. Keep your wrist and hand relaxed and use light pressure while slowly rotating your hand in a clock-wise, circular motion. Rotate your working hand three times before moving a hands-width back toward the foal’s hindquarters. Continue down his back along the Bladder meridian repeating the same flat-hand rotation. When you have completed one side, repeat Mo Fa on the opposite side of the foal’s back. Remember to be aware of the mare’s attitude toward you working with her foal. You might have to stop and share the love and attention with her before going on with your session with her foal. It can take time to build her trust. If there’s any agitation or anxiety surrounding the session, stop and try again another time. This needs to be a positive experience for all concerned, including you!

Suzy Maloney B.Eq.Sc. Sentience is the ability to perceive one’s environment and experience sensations such as pain, suffering, pleasure or comfort. An animal that is sentient receives internal sensation and information from its environment, and interprets this as an emotion. The sensation may make it feel good, bad, or indifferent. It will determine how best to act based on this, and use responses in its body, or a behaviour, in order to fulfil its needs.

16 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

In 1997 the European Union recognised animals as ‘sentient beings’ under European law. Our understanding of sentience means we must treat them in ways that avoid suffering and maximise well-being. It is a moral imperative that if an animal feels pain and can suffer we take action to avoid, minimise or alleviate such pain and suffering.

It’s important to distinguish the ability to think (reason) from the ability to feel (sentience). The way emotions are processed in the human brain is different from the horse because of the compartmentalization of the horse’s brain. As humans, we have the ability to reason why we feel a particular way. Horses simply feel emotion (without reasoning) because they don’t have the ability to rationalize the feeling.

SUMMER 2017

This brings us to the topic of anthropomorphism. This is the attribution of human traits, emotions, and intentions to non-human entities, in this case the horse. This is considered to be an innate tendency of human psychology which may explain its prevalence. What this results in though is the projection of human behaviours upon the horse that it just isn’t capable of. People will say their horse is being ‘naughty’ or ‘she knows how to do it she’s just trying it on’ or ‘he’s plotting against me’ or ‘she’s being difficult because she doesn’t like me’ etc. None of these thought processes are available to a horse. The horses’ brain just doesn’t reason in this way. Horses are reacting and responding to what is happening. If you change what you are feeling, thinking and doing then the horse will change along with you. Often people spend enormous amounts of time, effort and money to train a horse to change how it does something, while they themselves keep doing the same thing. If the horse is responding to the human then they need to change what they are doing, and the horse will follow. This goes against human tendency, we all prefer it to be someone else’s fault. We would rather look outside ourselves for the solution rather than inside. Often the change that is required in the human isn’t even in how they handle and ride the horse, but is more about their emotions, state of mind and energy.

EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

There’s an old saying that ‘the outside of the horse reflects the inside of the human’. When a tired, angry, wired human goes near a horse it doesn’t matter how brilliant their skills are they will not achieve the same results as an alert, happy, calm human. A horse will react to the true you, even if you are unaware of how you are feeling. This is a great feedback mechanism and tool for self-growth if we’re brave enough to listen to it.

Allowing a horse to be a horse without projecting human traits on it can be a great sense of relief. Instead of thinking that the horse is out to get you, you can start thinking ‘how can I help my horse to understand what I want?’, ‘what can I change in myself that will bring my goal closer?’ These are the types of questions that will bring real positive change in your relationship with your horse.

Dreaming of that new arena?

Lucy Morton Photography

Making dreams come true. Have you been dreaming of that new arena? Or, perhaps it’s a new barn or tractor you have in your sites?

Well, at the moment interest rates are at their lowest which means it is a perfect time to look at getting a free financial health check on your property loan. You may find that you are sitting on enough equity to do the upgrades you’ve been dreaming about without it costing you anymore per month, by capitalising on the record low interest rates.

John from Mortgage Choice not only lives on a farm with his horsey partner Jo himself, but has also been helping customers for nearly ten years all around Australia, find the best rates and products for their lifestyle needs. “Most people don’t realise that they can use the equity in their properties to help fund future improvements. This can make a huge difference to their lifestyle or assist in creating infrastructure that improves their capacity to earn.” Says John. Over 50% of all Australians are now choosing to use brokers instead of relying on the BIG 4 banks that generally don’t have the best rates or products to suit our fast changing economy. “They don’t move as fast and are not as flexible as some of the smaller lenders that can tailor products that are more reflective of market needs.” adds John. The advantage of working with a broker like John, is that he knows the latest rates and products being offered by over 20 lenders. John does all the leg work for you and even submits your application once you have agreed on the product and best of all it’s a free service. Brokers are paid by the banks to deliver their service to you. Most people don’t realise that if they start making applications with multiple banks they leave a trail and this trail is available for all lenders to see. Often this can make lenders nervous about that prospect as their first instinct is to think that their loan has been declined. On the other hand when you shop around with a broker like John, the research is done through his calculator and you are anonymous to the banks. You can be certain that John will find the best available product on the market, as a Mortgage Choice broker, he is paid the same rate no matter which lender you choose to proceed with. That’s not the case with many brokerage firms. Applying for loans, and submitting your financial details to the banks can be stressful and at the moment the industry has gone through more changes in 6 months than it has in 6 years and the regulators are really knuckling down on borrowers. More now than ever is the right time to use a broker. John takes out the stress and ensures you have everything the bank needs and will qualify you before making any submissions. This makes it all so much easier for you. John also prepares all the paperwork, lodging of the application and following up with the lender for you as your loan progresses to settlement. Again, there is no charge, because the lender pays us after your loan settles. Even if you’ve had your current home loan for only a couple of years, it is still possible for you to take advantage of different loan features or even secure a lower interest rate.

Trailer Loading and Travelling with Horses – PART THREE Make travelling as SAFE and COMFORTABLE as possible for your horse. Have you ever traveled in a horse float or trailer? Do you have any idea of how uncomfortable, physically exhausting, noisy or hot they can be? Sometimes it can even get hard to breathe in there if there is not adequate ventilation. We need to do all that we can to make the experience as comfortable as possible for the horse. Some horses are not terrified of the trailer itself but they know that the experience of traveling is uncomfortable, stressful and tiring and they may be nervous about their balance while traveling. Often horses load without too much difficulty the first time they are loaded but it is after they have had a trip and didn’t feel good about it that problems arise. If horses have pre-existing conditions of sore backs and weak hindquarters traveling is going to be harder for them. So treating these issues can improve the traveling experience for them.

1. Floats that are light and airy with big front windows are inviting for horses.

The more relaxed and confident the horse is in the trailer the less physically stressful and tiring the trip will be because the horse will not be holding all their muscles tight through anxiety. Also when in a relaxed state the horse will move their feet to balance rather than just holding tight and bracing. Feeling relaxed and confident are important keys to comfortable traveling but there are other factors that are also important to consider. The design of floats will make a big difference to your horse’s comfort while travelling. I have found the JR Easy Traveller to be one of the most horse friendly floats on the market and if you want to get more ideas about what design features help horses to travel more comfortably and with less stress you could go and look at their website www.jr-easytraveller.com and view their video of horses traveling and the design features that they use. I like their way of thinking and their video can give you a lot more information and ideas than I can give you here.

2. This butt bar allows room between the butt bar and the tailgate for the horses tail.

This will be the BEST INVESTMENT you ever make to PROTECT your CARAVAN, HORSE FLOAT, etc and ensure you have a safe journey! New laws came into effect 1st October 2017 regarding the use of the 50mm, 3.5T ball and coupling for Tow vehicles of 5,000 kg GVM and over.

SUMMER 2017

Following are some of the features that I have found important:Non slip floor. This is a very important factor to consider. Although most trailers have rubber on the floor it often is slippery as soon as it gets wet. The rubber matting on the floor and tailgate can get wet from rain blowing in while a horse is in transit. It can be wet from urine or even just the moisture from the manure is all it takes to make the rubber slippery. If horses are sweating, where the sweat drips and hits the floor can make the rubber very slippery. I advise everyone to go and test the floor of their float by sliding the heel of their boot along it when it is wet – pour some water on it or test the rubber even with just the moisture from the horse’s manure. Many floors visually appear to have a lot of grip but are dangerously slippery when wet and horses have little chance of staying on their feet. My attention was brought to this after horses fell and then could not get enough traction to get back up. 3. Wooden struts on tail gate prevent slipping.

The better the traction between the floor and your horse’s feet the safer, less physically tiring and more confident your horse will be about traveling. You may need to lay down some ‘grippier’ rubber matting or carpet on top of what you already have. Another remedy is to put wood shavings on the floor. The shavings will soak up the moisture and give more traction. The shavings need to be renewed after several uses as they can become dusty. You could also use sand or dirt on the floor and in times of desperation I have even cut open a bale of hay. Having wooden or rubber struts on the tail gate is also important to prevent slipping while loading and unloading. Large front window – horses like to be able to look ahead and see where they are going and the large window lets light in.

4. Pouring water on the floor to test the rubber to check if it is slippery when wet.

Light and airy –Floats that let light in and are light inside as opposed to dark are more inviting to horses and good ventilation is critical. Many horses over heat in trailers especially when they are traveled with rugs on – I generally don’t travel horses with rugs on. Have windows and air vents open and check your horse regularly on long trips. For trailers that need more ventilation I have found the “PerformAir” vents www.performairvent.com.au to be very good- they also filter out dust and exhaust fumes, but windows open and additional pop up or rotary vents may be all you need. Butt bars – To aid their balance many horses lean back on the butt bars and tail gate leaning on their tails even to the point of rubbing themselves red raw. Placing the butt bar so that there is space between it and the tailgate allows room for the tail and having adjustable heights for the butt bars allows the horse to “sit” on their butt. A feature of the JR Easy Traveller trailers. Solid metal padded butt bars are generally more supportive, comfortable and safer than chains as horses are more likely to go under chains if they panic. Room to spread their legs – the wider apart the horse can spread their legs the easier it is for them to balance, so NOT having a central divider that extends all the way to the floor will give them more leg room. Encased and supported upper body – Having a wide space for the legs to spread and then closely encasing the upper body (chest, ribs and hindquarters) helps support the horse so they don’t have to strain and work so hard to balance.

5. Testing the wet rubber with the heel of your boot.

Room to stretch and lower the neck –This is important for comfort, breathing and drainage of the sinuses as well as balance. The horse’s head and neck is an important part of their balancing system and room to stretch the neck will allow the horse to be more relaxed throughout the rest of his body. Not enough room to stretch the neck is often a huge problem and disadvantage of a lot of angle load floats, goosenecks and trucks.

Other safety or helpful hints aspects – If you are just travelling one horse, have them on the driver side of the float so that they are on the inside of the road not on the camber. Never load a horse into a float that is not hooked up securely to the towing vehicle. Regularly check the safety of the floor and structures under the floor boards and ramp, make sure wheel bearings are checked each year at registration time. Keep the interior pins holding the dividers, butt bars and chest bars well lubricated so they can be easily removed if needed in an emergency.

6. Horses need room to stretch and lower their necks.

EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

Check that there are no pins or protruding objects that the horse could get their halter hooked on or bump their eyes on. A lot of the pins used to hold chest and butt bars in place are quite dangerous as they protrude in a way that can easily hook the horse’s halter.

21

7. If tying your horse to a float beware of door handles or other protruding objects your horse could get the halter caught on.

8. These are safe door latches.

9. Rubber strips on mudguard edges make things safer if tying horse to the outside of the float.

If you tie your horse to the outside of the float make sure the float is hooked to a vehicle. Beware of things the horse could get their halter hooked on such as door handles. If the horses are tied with too long a length of rope then they could get their ropes caught on the corner of the mudguards of the float or if the mudguard edges are not covered with a strip of rubber they can also be dangerous if a horse was pawing and got their leg caught.

Check and double check your vehicle and float

hitch connection before leaving.

Unfortunately this has to be mentioned because it is seen all too often – people going too fast around corners, too fast through roundabouts, too fast on rough bumpy roads and braking hard. These things all make the horse’s balance difficult and the trip uncomfortable and people wonder why they have horses that don’t want to load!!! You may think I am stating the obvious but when I watch many people drive with floats it demonstrates that these points need to be brought up. When towing it is imperative to be totally mindful of the horse and not concerned about holding up traffic or being in a hurry to get somewhere. If we ask a

horse to put his life in our hands by getting in a horse float we need to make sure it is the best and safest experience we can for them. When coming into a corner give yourself plenty of time to slow down so you don’t have to brake hard. When coming out of a corner you should not accelerate until the float is on the straight after the corner - quite often you will see that the driver accelerates as soon as the car is on the straight but the float is still right in the middle of the turn. If you are new to towing – practice without the horse, have lessons http://www.tow-ed.com. au, find out all the legal and safety requirements for your trailer either from place a like Tow-Ed or your states Roads and Traffic Authorities. Applying all of this knowledge should really help you to understand loading and traveling from your horse’s point of view and give you ideas to help build the horse’s confidence, helping to make the whole experience a lot better for both you and your horse.

Kinesiology tape is gaining popularity in both the human and equine world. As more people are becoming exposed to it, horse owners are beginning to wonder if this tape can help their horse. One of the more common questions I am asked from a horse owner is “Why would I want to tape my horse?”. My answer is that there are MANY reasons why you would want to use kinesiology tape on your horse. I have listed some of those answers below

Decrease Pain - Most horses experience some form of pain on a

regular basis. This could either be due to an injury, sore muscles from training and exercise, sore back due to an ill fitting saddle, unbalanced rider or just from being ridden a lot. There are many other factors that can cause pain in your horse. Kinesiology tape can help decrease your horse’s pain sensation while also improving blood flow to the area, allowing the area to heal quicker and mobilize lactic acid and other metabolic waste that is contributing to the pain sensation.

Stabilize Weak Areas - A horse that has ever suffered from a soft

tissue injury (ligament, muscle, etc), likely suffers from some degree of instability due to it. Kinesiology tape can provide your horse with the additional support needed to prevent any further damage without reducing normal range of motion.

Decrease Swelling - Kinesiology tape can help mobilize fluid and decrease swelling due to injury, allergic reactions, stocking up, etc.

Increase Proprioception - Proprioception is the body’s perception

of where it’s parts are. For example, a horse should know where all of it’s hoofs are landing during exercise without having to look at them.

Many horses who have suffered from injury or neurological disorders can benefit from kinesiology tape because it helps improve their body’s proprioception by stimulating the proprioceptive nerves during movement. The better your horse’s proprioception is working, the less chance he or she has of injuring themselves!

Improve Energy Meridian Flow - Applying kinesiology tape along

specific meridians can help improve energy flow along them. Stagnant energy in a meridian can lead to health issues, behavioral problems and more. Kinesiology tape is a safe and easy way to improve your horse’s energy flow.

Speed Up Healing - Kinesiology tape helps to mobilize fluids

(removes the inflammation and brings in oxygenated blood) to help speed up healing time. Post surgical tapings can be used to decrease inflammation following a surgery and also decrease scar tissue formation after sutures and staples are removed.

While there are MANY reasons your horse can benefit from kinesiology tape, it is also important to receive proper training before applying tape to your horse. There are specific ways of cutting and applying the tape to achieve the appropriate goals. There are also some circumstances when kinesiology tape can make a situation worse, so it is important to be familiar with these before taping your horse! Be sure to receive proper training or seek guidance from a trained practitioner.

The Emotional Horse & Although horses and humans are very different, the essential oils that help to reduce the feelings of distress and anxiousness in us, can often do the same for horses. Horses are excellent candidates for essential oils. They are naturally attuned to plants and as essential oils are derived from plants and flowers, they are no exception. Essential Oils have been used on horses far longer than with an other animal. Horses in the wild naturally seek out plants for their well being and instinctively know which oils would support their needs. Given the opportunity, they will actually choose the oils they need for a particular health concern. When a horse is presented with essential oils he likes, he will sniff it, curl his lips, chew or even try to take the bottle out of your hand. Please note that if the horse pins his ears back or stays away, then that particular oil is not for them and you need to try a different oil. For emotional issues, have the horse smell the oil first. If the horse likes the oil then place a drop or two of oil on the forehead (third eye), the crest of the neck by the mane or at the poll. Allow the horse to lick the oil off your hand if it is an oil safe for ingestion. For physical issues, place the oil directly on the area of concern and for respiratory issues, place the oil on the front of the chest and allow them to inhale it. The effects can be both quick and rewarding. By learning which oils to use and how to use them, you can take an active role in improving the life of your horse. I witnessed this first hand last week when I took my

essential oils around to my horsey friend who wanted to see if the oils would work for both herself and her horse. Both horse and owner had had past experiences which had left them with feelings of anxiousness. She chose a blend of oils called ‘Balance’ (a.k.a. Grounding Blend) which is a gorgeous combination of oils used to bring balance to the mind and body. She offered the bottle towards the nose of her horse, to which he sniffed generously and began chewing. Although he walked away he quickly came back for more. We both took this as a big ‘YES!’ and will be using this oil regularly when handling him in the future.

The Science Behind Emotional Aromatherapy. Essential oils have a direct impact on the chemical communication system of the brain. A smell, taste, sound or touch can trigger a thought or a memory which the brain interprets as a type of signal. The brain then compares the current interpretation with that of a previous experience and will determine which emotional response to exhibit in turn. The brain then releases chemicals which match the emotional response which in turn, cause the systems of the body to respond to this chemical message from the brain.

SUMMER 2017

Through the use of essential oils, we can begin healing past negative experiences by helping the brain to form new and positive responses in certain situations.

Using The Right Oils. You may be wondering what essential oils are? Essential oils are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They are extracted by steam distillation or cold-pressed to preserve the precious compounds. They are 50-70 times stronger than herbs, safe and effective to use. It is of course, vitally important to use a high quality essential oil without any fillers or synthetics. It is for this reason that I choose DoTerra Essential Oils. The word ‘doTerra’ means ‘gift of the earth’, and that it surely is! This is the only company assuring a Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG), by rigorous 3rd party testing whose job it is to identify the presence of desired therapeutic qualities and the absence of impurities.

What a great asset to your mounting yard. Tough, lightweight and easy to handle. Weighing just 4.5 kilos, standing 55cm tall, and a base radius of 70cm, the mount ease is very user-friendly. Gives respite by removing strain on both horse and rider, no pressure to keep your balance on wobbly crates, etc. and no sharp corners for nervous mounts. The product is UV stabilised, and can be left out in paddocks in all weather, without adverse affects. All Australian Made, by All Australian company. Available in many colours, what you don't see we can get for you.

The oils are sourced from 70 countries around the world where they are grown indigenously. They are careful to support the farmers and community while using co-impact techniques. WINNING TONGUE PLATE BIT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

WINNING AND LOSING! EP

Extended Plate

Amazing for any breathing problems and the only bit in the world to stop displacement of the soft palate.

TROY PALMER Champion Drafter I highly recommend them

NP

Normal Plate

Rated by riders and trainers as like having power steering! Riders say it’s the best bit in the world - the bit of the future!

DAVID HAYES Champion Trainer Major breakthrough. I recommend it.

MEGAN JONES Olympic Champion Works great. You must try it.

Prevents the tongue over the bit and soft palate displacement.

Joint and arms do not hinge downward thereby preventing pain to the roof, tongue and bars.

11mm low profile gear casing prevents roof rubbing. The flat plate prevents bit pinching and reduces bit pressure by 85%.

The bit arms have limited travel to prevent outer ring pressure and pain to the cheek and lips.
