Tania Huppatz Tania runs Snaffle Travel, a successful travel company combining her love of horses and travel.

Meredith Chapman EA’s National Health and Safety Manager since January 2020, Meredith has 20 years’ experience as a health and safety professional. Rebecca Ashton Rebecca is a Pilates instructor, dressage coach, FEI competitor and equestrian journalist. For the past 12 years she’s travelled the globe covering major shows as a writer and photographer.

She loves immersing herself in different equestrian cultures and interviewing those at the top of their game - and on this occasion it’s none other than Heath Ryan.

Des Hughes Des is a 5* Technical Delegate (TD) and Chair of the Equestrian Australia Eventing Committee. Not a rider himself, he became interested when his daughter began competing in the late ‘80s. He started by helping out event organising committees, and by 2005 had been promoted to FEI International TD. We spoke to him about moving up the levels.

Dr Doug English A veterinarian and long-time turmeric researcher, Doug completed his Bachelor of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland in 1974.

when he was 12 in his Pony Club’s team of four. “They were short a rider. I was on a little grey pony and I was put in the middle of the team so no one could see me,” Heath explains. The wild child turned up with bot eggs on his pony to the dismay of the other parents.

Heath’s most memorable pony was a little mare called Widgiewa, bought sight unseen. “She had quite a big head and would travel on the forehand with her head down because that’s just the way she moved, so I would win dressage tests,” he recalls. “She was so genuine.

She would jump a round and not stop.

That was a godsend to me.” The mare took him to his first National Pony Club Eventing Championships.

At the age of 18, Heath headed off to the UK for a six month stint to gain his BHS Assistant Instructor qualification. “I didn’t even know what an AI was but I thought it was a good idea and it would be fun.”

Although there were pubs at night and cricket on the weekends, the daily riding was regimented and precise. Heath laughs: “Back then, the English didn’t believe in washing horses, thinking they’d catch a cold even in the middle of summer! So you had to curry comb the horses and the instructor would count the number of curry comb dust prints on the wall. I think you had to have 15. I realised if you put dust in a bucket you could dip the curry comb in that. At 19 you just know too much!”

But the young Aussie wised up and wanted to get more out of the situation, so he buckled down and worked hard.

There was a moment of realisation that Heath took forward into the rest of his life: concentrate on the work and just that one skill can help you achieve

unexpected and wonderful things – a skill he never applied during his school years!

His time in England stood Heath in good stead for his next adventure at the school of German riding master Herr Egon Von Neindorff in Karlsruhe. Heath remembers him as a real character: “He smoked big cigars, had a pot belly, skinny legs and a big glass eye, and didn’t speak any English. He basically ruled by terror. It was the worst three years of my life, but I was able to get a job there because no one else lasted.”

Heath cared for 12 Lipizzaner stallions, some of who would attack because of excessive whip use. “The horses that did the airs above the ground were stark raving mad. It was pretty dangerous in some ways. I still have a scar above my eye from the buckle on a bridle when a horse threw its head up at me.”

But Heath had a plan to improve his riding and help his horses at the same time. In the morning, he would report one of the stallions as sick so Von Neindorff wouldn’t use the horse that day. Another rider, Bart, had a scheme similar to Heath’s and late at night when they were allowed to ride the pair would bring out the stallions they’d put aside.

On three occasions Egon came in drunk, walked into the middle of the arena, gave Bart and Heath a lesson then staggered out and the next morning never ever said a word.

Those days were pretty lean for Heath.

Meals were porridge made out of the horses’ oats and stale bread from the baker. “I worked hard and I was trying. I wouldn’t say it was brilliant riding but it certainly started me thinking and I came out looking like a statue on the horse.

That was the German way, although it didn’t necessarily address feeling and confidence in the horse.”

We had Australian owners who would buy one of the mares and when the foal was born if it was a colt it would be sold, and we’d get a new Australian owner to buy the fillies.

What happened is that we started to capture the Donnerhall and Pik Bube bloodlines, and we bred horses like the licensed stallion Duntroon.” Amongst the champions sired by this stallion was another of Heath’s top dressage horses Greenoaks Dundee. The pair were members of the Australian dressage team at the 2008 Olympics.

I think to be really good you have to do it yourself and set your own goals and standards.

In Heath’s book, high performance equates to discomfort. “I’ve been involved with winning gold medals at the Olympics and I know where those thresholds are and I know where they are at the moment. The Australians who won the silver at Tokyo: Andrew Hoy was a result of the high performance training of Mark Phillips and Princess Anne in the 1970s, and Shane Rose and Kevin McNab were a product of the ‘90s when we were winning gold medals,” he explains. “But where are our Olympic superstars who should have been produced over the last two decades?

Meredith Chapman: EA helmet regulations MEREDITH CHAPMAN is Equestrian Australia’s National Health and Safety Manager, and has a few words of advice on the regulations surrounding helmets.

Why was it necessary to put these regulations in place?

This is about all of us working together to manage health and safety, and it’s also very much about awareness and training so that people engage. Some riders think it's us checking and saying your helmet’s safe or it’s not, but we can only ensure that you’re wearing the standard helmet that we mandate.

We want people to be aware and responsible for their own heads as well.

For example, most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every five years or so. But if the helmet has sustained a hard blow, it should be replaced immediately because there may be damage to the inner shell that will reduce its capacity to protect you.

How do I know if my helmet complies and where do I get it tagged?

The standards are all listed in EA General Regulations, Article 122.2: Dress and Salute. You’ve got your Australian, New Zealand, American, British and European standards and they’re all included. So no matter which country your helmet was manufactured in, you’ll know whether or not it complies.

Once you’re sure your helmet meets the standard you need to get it tagged, you would go onto your state website and search for helmet tagging and you will find how to get your helmet tagged.

Alison outlines some fitness measurements you can employ: Aim to work your horse over a set distance at a set speed, and as they get fitter they will perform the same exercise at a lower heart rate. Or, you can work the horse at a constant heart rate (irrespective of speed) over a set distance. An increase in fitness will mean the horse will cover the distance in a shorter time.

Measuring your horse’s recovery rate is a sure-fire way to check for developments in fitness. First record your horse’s resting heart rate so you

he Szilvásvárad National Stud is the second largest Lipizzaner breeding facility in the world.

Located around 160 kilometres from Budapest, it sits in a natural wonderland of forests, lakes, waterfalls, and even prehistoric caves.

I met stud director David Cseri to take a carriage tour of the property and learn about the Lipizzaner’s long and interesting history, and what lies ahead for them.

Lipizzaners in Hungary An accomplished show jumper and lover of Thoroughbred racing, David is also a historian with three published books on Hungary’s equestrian heritage, and when called on for military duties, serves in the Hungarian hussars as a reserve captain.

His main aim now though, is to promote the Lipizzaner breed to the world and see Hungarian riders compete internationally with locally bred horses.

He tells me that horsemanship has been an integral part of Hungarian culture since the first Magyar tribes crossed the Carpathian Mountains on horseback to settle on the Danube plains. Although an influx of oriental horses followed the conquest of Hungary in 1526, the Hungarian court later imported Spanish and Neapolitan horses to create the Lipizzaner, a horse, which thanks to their natural ability, temperament, and spirit, is as physically able to withstand the demands of warfare as they are

In 1933, two Hungarian cavalry generals founded a sister school to Vienna’s

The training facility operated on equal footing with the Vienna institute until WWII brought it to an end in 1945. Four of the Lipizzaner stallions were taken to pull heavy munitions into combat, while another eighteen were killed and eaten by the invading Russian Army.

In 1952, almost a decade after the war, the Lipizzaners were relocated to Csipkéskút, 870 metres above sea level in the Bükk Mountains, due to concerns that foals born on Bábolna’s sandy plains were significantly larger than those bred near the Carpathian Mountains.

Valuing mares Passionate about his work, David tells me that some of the horses from the stud are achieving excellent results in both driving and dressage competitions.

In a new approach, all the mares are now trained under saddle and harness before they are put in foal.

He firmly believes in the mares’ value: “Some breeders make the mistake of thinking that they’re not as important as the stallions, which is just not true. A good mare contributes many positive characteristics, such as rideability, willingness to work and expressive movement. By seeing how the mares perform, it is easier to gauge how a foal will behave.”

In 2021 the stud had a record year for sales, but David says that it’s still too early to evaluate whether the new approach is making a difference.

“You really need a decade to see how changes in breeding and training will influence the horses.” Still, he is happy that buyers both in Hungary and abroad are seeing the value in Lipizzaners, even during the trying times of the pandemic.

Hungarian hussars After visiting the breeding mares, foals, stallions, and museums, we watched three Hungarian hussars training in one of the arenas at the main stable.

hussars, dashing cavalry regiments that were fabled during the Napoleonic era.

Formed in the 14th century, and inspired by the Ottomans, hussar regiments later became a significant component of Hungary’s army, and their charisma and bravery was the stuff of legends.

World War II was the last major conflict in which Hungarian hussars participated.

David tells me that the hussar regiment was only recently reinstated after being disbanded in 1945. The Szilvásvárad stud provides the unit with Lipizzaner horses and training facilities.

The future looks bright In addition to breeding and training exceptional horses, Szilvásvárad has hosted a number of important international equestrian competitions, including the 1984 World Championships for Four-in-hand carriages, and was one of the locations chosen during filming for the Netflix release The King.

Recently, the Hungarian government and the EU invested heavily in the development of the valley where the stud is located, implementing a popular narrow-gauge railway, a forestry school and considerable infrastructure, including shops, dining options and hotels.

Hungry also funded the complete restoration of Szilvásvárad’s Lipicai Equestrian Centre, which has only recently opened to the public. The new, improved facilities can accommodate thousands of spectators, and helped Hungary win its bid to host the 2024 FEI World Championships for Four-in-hand driving.

The extensive restoration project is the largest equestrian development to be funded in decades, costing over 21 million Euros to complete. Wound first aid basics

Always apply a dressing to the wound and I prefer to use something bigger than the standard 7.5 centimetre dressing. Use a 10 to 15 centimetre wide bandage over cotton padding such as Combine Dressing, Gamgee, Pharwrap, or even plain cotton wool cut from a roll works well – but be sure to place a non-stick cover such as a Melolin low adherent dressing or a piece of paraffin gauze directly over the wound.

The inflammation process The next stage in the wound process is inflammation, and this stimulates healing. Anti-inflammatory medications will reduce this and should only be used for pain. They only suppress symptoms and do not cure, but they can have a positive effect by encouraging freer movement, which stimulates circulation and therefore healing. If the wound has been correctly cleaned there should be little infection. However, if infection occurs, it is best controlled by topical

This process operates in a moist environment, not dry, and so it is important to keep the wound bandaged.

Some people think, incorrectly, that drying out is best for wounds, possibly because a healthy wound will grow epithelial cells to cover the defect, and once that occurs effusion stops and the wound becomes dry.

But drying before this happens severely retards healing because epithelial cells will only migrate to cover the wound in a healthy, moist environment. The cells are also killed off by caustic compounds like bluestone (copper sulphate), which create scar tissue formed by fibroblasts.

Proud flesh The formation of proud flesh is increased by granulocytes, a type of immune cell that has granules (small particles) with enzymes that release connective tissue-activating peptides, which cause fibroblast proliferation and the formation of a space-filling ground substance. This release can become excessive when wounds are slow to heal because of infection, irritation, premature drying, or an undetected foreign body.

The fibrobasts do contract eventually and pull the edges of the wound together. If healing stalls or the granulation tissue becomes excessive, it is best to get your vet to cut it off. If you use a caustic substance like copper sulphate it will remove the proud flesh but also causes healing delay, and replacement of the squamous skin cells with scar tissue that stays forever.

I like to use a sharp butcher’s knife to trim off proud flesh. It has no nerves and so does not cause pain, and cutting stimulates more inflammation which speeds healing. Lots of bleeding occurs however, but it resolves quickly and a pressure bandage should be applied.

Most proud flesh is acceptable anyway – it does contract well and is minimised by protective bandaging.

ou would think the answer to helping a poor horse gain condition would be simple: feed

them more energy than they use. But step a little closer and you are likely to spot more questions than answers! After all, one underweight horse can be very different to the next. Variables such as age, workload, health status and living conditions are all possible contributors to why the horse became underweight in the first place – but they can also point to the best way forward for safe weight gain.

Get the basics right When it comes to feeding horses, nearly every approach must first touch on roughage. Weight gain is no exception.

Before exploring the array of available concentrates, complete feeds and weight gain supplements, give some thought to how much roughage your horse is getting. Whether they’re under or over-conditioned, a horse needs a daily minimum of 1.5 per cent of its bodyweight in roughage (pasture, hay, chaff, or super fibres such as beet pulp or lupin hulls). The fibre in roughage is generally a good energy source. However, keep an eye out for behavioural changes as your horse may react to the high sugar content of some hays and pastures!

Another key point is to make sure your horse is actually processing during sessions by letting them lick and chew, yawn and stand still. Felicity stresses the importance of allowing them the time to process, because that's when they learn how to go from stressed to relaxed. She explains it like this: “If your horse still looks a bit out of sorts or concerned before you start rattling the bottle or playing the sound again, then you're not teaching them how to let go of that worry.” Fundamentally, the aim is to teach the horse how to go from stress to relaxed as their level of tolerance is gradually increased.

Ongoing payoffs Interestingly, the benefits of this type of training have a ripple effect, giving the horse the tools to cope better when they encounter other stressful things in day-to-day life. One horse Felicity worked with would get particularly worried and anxious. However, the desensitisation work taught him how to find a soft posture, lower his head, relax and then draw towards the thing that was bothering him. “One day his owner took him on a trail ride and there was a scary bridge ahead. He stopped, then on his own he lowered his head and just decided to draw towards it and walk across. And they’re the tools we taught him.”

Now you no longer have to leave first outings up to teeth-clenching luck or chance. If done correctly, working to desensitise your horse is well worth the effort. The reward lies in an improved horse-human relationship and growth in your horse’s confidence – a winning combination all round.

The art of sportsmanship The dictionary defines sportsmanship as the fair and generous behaviour or treatment of others, but interpretations can differ, writes JAMIE HOCKING.

M

y take on sportsmanship is being respected as an athlete who has integrity and ethical values. Equestrians who are consistent and fair in all their dealings with horses, other competitors, supporters and organisers are the ones I respect and admire the most.

Respect is different from being liked.

Being well-liked is random and has little to do with effort. Respect has to be earned and comes from consistently putting effort into improving your behaviour, values and treatment of others, even when nobody is watching.

As much as horse-riding skills are learned through instruction, so too is sports-

manship. Riders who miss out on learning positive coping mechanisms often tend to blame the horse or those around them, or they shut others out as they obsess on their own perceived failings. A crying, devastated, sulky or angry child (or adult) instantly spoils a great day out! Worse, they risk feeling isolated and ashamed, or sense that success is less sweet because other people are likely remembering their poor behaviour when things weren’t going well.

So who can teach these sportsmanship skills? As a coach myself, I believe it’s important for parents, coaches and mentors to talk about feelings when a young rider loses a placing, gets

scared, falls off, gets bitten, forgets the course, or stuffs up somehow. Just don't promise that it will go better next time, because it might not.

Look for and commend every display of team spirit, loyalty, courtesy, kindness, and horsemanship. My parents always made me say a thank you to organisers before heading home. And congratulate the winner – it’s not only good sportsmanship, friendships begin with these sorts of gestures.

Role models have always been my best teachers. For me, being lectured tends to go in one ear and out the other. The real influencers were the international male vaulters I admired most, and not because they won competitions. My first time overseas I relentlessly tailed Gero Meyer, a German vaulting superstar, copying everything he did, on or off the horse. He was worthy of my devotion, an icon of sportsmanship and someone who always took time to talk with me as I grew up.

Friendliness is another key to being seen as engaged and a good sportsperson, plus it's a great way to gather more role models – and you can never have too many of those. American legend and gold medalist Devon Maitozo pulled me aside at one of my first overseas competitions and said: “I don't care how you go, win or bomb out. By the final day of the competition, I want the names of three vaulters you've introduced yourself to.” I was petrified, thinking about approaching older, cooler European vaulters but I didn't want to disappoint Devon. Long story short, I gained three new buddies from three different countries, including a Hungarian guy with no shared language.

I quickly clicked to the value of the strategy and my network grew, giving me great long-term friendships, access to horses, coaches, training facilities in other countries, free survival tips, places to stay, new languages, fantastic adventures, a sense of belonging, and some great new role models.

Being polite is also a critical component of sportsmanship. Every kid is tonguetied and shy, but being able to say 'hello, nice to meet you' or 'thank

you' with a handshake (as taught by my parents) helped me start building my sportsmanship skills. Shyness can translate to bad manners, even if unintended, so kids need to find ways to get over it. Polite phrases helped me look more confident than I was and opened doors to social gatherings with people I respected, including time with my super-heroes.

Another opportunity for developing good sportsmanship is speaking in front of a group. Saying a few words at awards or presentations is a chance to demonstrate gratitude and graciousness as an athlete. I learned basic speaking at my school, and it was expected at our vaulting club. I also practiced on family or friends. Simple lines like 'thanks for coming to my party', gets you used to being polite and gracious in front of others. One day, a microphone will be put in your hand with the order to speak as cameras focus on you from across a big stadium – and yep, it happened to me. With a few go-to basics, you can avoid passing out from fear!

As a 25-year-old, I'm just starting to realise the extent of my debt to those who helped me find my own version of sportsmanship, either by setting an example or by picking me up after I did things the hard way. I'm still a work in progress although I've had plenty of practice dealing with big disappointments. And it’s all worth it when you win that coveted place without trading off who you aspire to be as a sportsperson.

three MERs before becoming eligible to move up a level. “Generally, two of those MERs have to be clear of cross country faults and one can have twenty penalties,” Des explained.

On top of this, the combination also has to achieve a particular dressage percentage and meet certain show jumping requirements. “If you have more than twenty jumping penalties, you’re not allowed to go cross country,” says Des, calling to attention a recent rule change to the show jumping phase.

However, Des believes that just because you’ve achieved three MERs and can move up, this does not necessarily mean you should move up. “The more experience you have at a certain level, the more confidence you’re going to have going up to the next level,” he says. “There’s nothing wrong with sticking round and getting five, six, seven or even eight MERs at a particular level before you move up if that’s where you’re comfortable.”

I personally had a case with a green horse I was eventing who already had two good qualifying MERs at his current level, so only needed one more under his belt to move up. After a break he came back in a bit looky and a little

lacking in confidence. At the next event I took him to, he was backing off the cross country fences, had a few awkward jumps, and we ran over time. We even had a couple of rails in the show jumping. On the whole, he wasn’t giving me loads of ‘we got this’ vibes. However, the final result was still actually a qualifying MER score.

While we were technically eligible to move up a level at our next competition, that would have been a terrible decision.

He simply hadn’t been jumping with confidence at the previous event. This is what listening to your horse is all about. A few events later, he was back to pulling me to the fences and eagerly asking ‘where’s the next one?’. Then I knew he was actually ready to step up.

Do more than scrape through MERs may be the minimum requirement, but like everything, the more time you put in at a certain level, the more competent you and your team mate will become.

Don’t just aim to go up the grades to keep up with your friends. It’s a decision you have to make based on your horse, how they’re going, and how they’re finding the current demands. Is it just scraping by, or is it really excelling and oozing confidence coupled with control?

You also need to consider how you are feeling as a rider. Give thought to the reasons you are trying to move up to the next rung. Does your current level feel easy? Have the last few runs at this level been consistent? Or, are you just trying to run with the crowd, reaching for the level you think you should be at? Too many people are trying to run before they can walk. Equestrian sport is serious business and this attitude can lead to disaster.

One social media video compilation that sticks in my mind was of a young rider who was barely hanging onto a rearing horse in the start box, was practically bolted with across country, and had more than a few hairy moments.

thought when reviewing your horse’s current attitude to things. You don’t want to blow their confidence, or your own, by being in too much of a rush.

Competitions should be a way for you to consolidate all of your training to date. Do everything you can to prepare at home, come out and give it your all, then, under the watchful eye of the judge, see how well it all comes together on the day. Use the experience as a way to self-analyse. If you or your horse feel even a little doubtful or less than fully committed, stay at your level a little longer. Spending more time in your current grade will only benefit you and your equine in the long term.

was comfortable with her moving up through each grade. “Coaches are a really important tool in the development of riders. They know when their riders are ready to move up,” he comments.

Ponder this

In the throes of competition, Des points out that the TD’s role can also entail stepping down a rider if they are not happy with how they are riding at that level: “The TD can say, ‘for me, it’s a safety issue, I don’t think you’ve had enough experience, I’ve seen you warming your horse up. Sorry but you can’t go’. As a leader, you have to be on the ball and looking for those sorts of things.” This could be a rider in the warm up getting consistently too deep to the fences, having repeated ‘ugly’ jumps, or just looking like they’re really lacking confidence in their own riding.

It’s critical the rider themselves recognises that they are confident at their current level and are ready to go forward, and that their horse has enough experience to move forward too. So how can you tell if you’re ready? Des sums it up like this: “If the answer is ‘hmm maybe, maybe not’ to either one of those questions, then don’t go.”

Fall detection A decade-long study of statistics from the United States National Trauma Data Bank found that the risk of hospital admission from equestrian injuries is higher than those from football, motor vehicle racing, and skiing. The smart saddle can detect a rider’s fall almost instantly, immediately transmitting a signal to call for help. Used in conjunction with a GPS, injured riders could be quickly located and given speedy access to emergency treatment, an invaluable safety feature for those riding alone.

Equestrian sports are undeniably challenging and potentially dangerous, making the analysis of movement and injury prevention based on portable sensor technology particularly important.

With a response time of 16 milliseconds, the smart saddle has the potential to provide real-time statistical data for both equestrians and their coaches, with the added safety of fall detection.

f there’s one piece of tack for an endurance rider to get absolutely right, it’s the saddle. Podium is

a big name on the endurance circuit, and a popular brand in Italy with long distance riders. The company is constantly reviewing and updating their high-tech saddle range, and we talk to their spokesperson Gabriella Bosco to find out what’s new for Podium in 2022.

EH: Can you first tell us a little about Podium’s backstory.

GB: Twenty years ago, finding a saddle suitable for endurance was a problem for many riders on the international scene.

This prompted our founder Romano Macri to design a saddle that allowed riders to customise it by selecting a tree size that best fitted their horse, and a seat size and model that best suited them.

The saddle needed to provide superior comfort for both horse and rider even after several hours of heavy competition or long-distance riding.

After many years of testing, researching, and studying different designs, the first lightweight, balanced and durable Podium tree prototype was created.

The mold was produced by the same company that designed the Luna Rossa yacht keel.

Romano then sought out an expert leather craftsman, and together they designed a set of adjustable components that could be easily modified to the tree to personalise each saddle based on the rider and horse’s requirements.

acing Queensland has launched a number of significant initiatives during the past 12 months. In mid-2021 the Queensland Off-The-Track (QOTT) Program unveiled a plan to allow new off the track owners access to free instruction and individual support across a range of horse husbandry areas.

The lessons cover nutrition, groundwork, general horse care, behaviour and ridden work. This holistic approach has proved to be a huge part of the program’s success, its popularity underscored by extremely positive feedback from the participants.

Eligible for 10 lessons awarded through a voucher system, successful applicants can choose from 37 QOTT Approved Coaches. The coaches are all Equestrian Australia accredited and are located right across Queensland.

Kim Duffy, Racing Queensland's Senior Animal Care Manager, says 345 horses have so far taken part in the program and the high lesson uptake will benefit both horses and riders: "We have a variety of students in the program, from riders and owners who want to learn about feeding, nutrition and handling, to those who want to transition a horse from the racetrack to domestic life. We also cater for riders interested in many equestrian disciplines such as dressage and show jumping, so a wide range of people are participating.”

The Marismeño heritage Although genetically diverse, the Marismeño have never lost the ability to survive in their demanding marsh environment, writes MATHILDE GREGOIRE.

T

he Marismeño is one of the oldest breeds in Europe.

Native to the marshes of the

Guadalquivir River delta in Andalusia, Spain, these semi-feral horses are the descendants of the primitive Iberian breeds that lived in the region thousands of years ago. When the Moors arrived in the 8th century,

Marismeños were crossed with Barb horses from Northern Africa. The introduction of this bloodline produced many of the qualities seen in other Iberian breeds, including agility, resilience, and stamina.

For centuries, Marismeños were used in agriculture and cattle ranching. It’s believed that American mustangs are

descendants of escaped, domestic horses – very likely to have been Marismeños – brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Although the mustang later became a symbol of freedom and strength, Spain’s Marismeños did not receive the same appreciation. It was not until 2003 that recognition of the breed grew, and the official studbook wasn’t established until 2012. With just over 1,200 horses now registered in the Spanish Official Catalogue of Livestock Breeds, the Marismeño is classified as an autochthonous breed in danger of extinction.

Today, these free-roaming horses continue to live in Doñana National Park in southwestern Spain, a protected nature reserve with an extraordinary ecosystem consisting of marshes, sand dunes and wetlands. The Marismeño’s presence plays an important role in the ecological equilibrium of the region, which hosts one of Europe’s most biodiverse habitats.

Amber, who is also interested in the cattle side of the business, added some agricultural courses to her studies and continued to regularly compete at various equestrian events. “I was lucky when I left school. We had land and we had stock so I had a kick start. I began training outside horses and breaking in,” she says.

Some of her breaking skills originated with one of the locals. “I did some work experience with Leah Read, it was only for a fortnight but I learnt a lot which I now combine with the methods I’ve figured out for myself.”

Along with her mum Jeanine and sister Brandy, Amber has also created and developed Woodlands Karouselle Performance Horses, which she began with one nine-month-old Welsh D foal, Anakie Saint Nick. She now has an assortment of breeds and types at various stages of training, some of which are for sale.

She has competitively show jumped and evented but her greatest love is dressage. “It’s fundamentally important in all the equestrian disciplines,” she says. “My very first instructor was Linda Shore, a dressage specialist. She still drives five hours from Toowoomba to teach me and a small group of other riders. And even when I’m the only one here at Eidsvold she still comes to give me a lesson. Linda’s been there for me for years.”

Amber was recently delighted with an Inter 1 she rode with Anakie Saint Nick in a Virtual Dressage Series conducted by Equestrian Queensland and Dressage Queensland. Mary Seefried, a FEI 5* judge, awarded the pair a winning score of 68 per cent. “I was pretty stoked. The only disappointing thing was that the test was unofficial,” Amber explains.

“It was Nick’s first Inter 1. He’s twelve now, fourteen and five-eighths high and most definitely my heart horse, He’s the one I do the Grand Prix movements with when we’re out mustering.”

Over the years she has successfully ridden at Interschools in Melbourne, CDIs, and breed shows in Sydney, but these days she does little interstate travel; even getting to Queensland events is a long haul. “The closest competition venue is three and a half hours away and the nearest after that is five and a half hours. I could move but I have everything right here other than the competitions.”

And there is so much to do at home that her social life is non-existent.

“I just work and nothing else, but I’m happy about that. I have a Welsh cross gelding, a Warmblood cross and some babies who I think will be pretty special.

And because I’m keen to get into some serious breeding I recently purchased a Hannoverian weanling colt by Le Formidable.”

The future looks bright for Amber Hamilton. With plenty of room to bring up her horses, excellent training facilities, and wonderfully supportive parents, there is, she says, little to complain about.

SELL YOUR SADDLE The role of Saddle Hub is to make the process of selling your saddle as effortless as possible.

We predominately sell saddles on consignment, whilst this process is not instant, we endeavour to turn all saddles over within a 3 month period. We deal with the stuff you don't want to: the advertising, the shonky emails, the insulting offers and time wasters.

WE WILL:  

arrange for your saddle to be shipped to us

inspect your saddle, take professional photographs and provide an accurate description



advertise to our large network through social media, our website and working directly with our buyers
