Epping Town Council Talk About Epping Autumn 2025 12pp A4 August 2025

The Mayor’s view Safer Epping

It was a privilege to be elected Mayor of Epping and I am enjoying the opportunities this is bringing. I have launched the Scarecrow Trail and the Summer Reading Challenge and attending other events has enabled me to make new contacts and learn more about our community.

The major event was of course the Epping Town Show. So much work goes into preparing for this by the staff at Epping Town Council, the organisations who perform in the arena and those who set up stalls. Thank you to you all for making this such a successful and enjoyable day.

During my year as Mayor I am aiming to increase awareness and understanding of dementia. During Dementia Awareness week, I organised a stall in the High Street to make known the support available and the many activities provided in the locality for people with dementia and their carers.

The Alzheimer’s Society has developed Dementia Awareness sessions which last 60-90 mins. Epping Town Council hosted a session in June and everyone who attended said how helpful it had been. You may have a family member or friend with dementia and this session would

help you to understand more about their condition. If you would like to attend a session please contact Epping Town Council. Your details will be passed to me and I will contact you about future sessions.

One of the groups I’ve met is Support for Sight. I discussed with these visually impaired people how they found getting around Epping. One of the hazards they face are trees and bushes which overhang the pavement and which they walk into. Think what it’s like to be concentrating on walking along the pavement and suddenly being hit in the face by a branch. Please check to see if your garden has vegetation overhanging the pavement which would be a hazard like this and if it has, please cut it back.

If you would like me to visit your group, either for a special occasion or to find out more about what you do, please get in touch with Epping Town Council (contact details back page).

On 2 August, the Annual Petanque competition between Epping Town and Epping Forest District Councils was held at Stonards Hill hosted by Epping Petanque Club. Former Mayor Christine Burgess and I formed the Town Council Team and we were delighted to retain the trophy by 13 points to 7. Petanque was a new game to me and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed playing. Perhaps you would like to give it a try.

Our next meeting will be in the Conference Room at Epping Hall on Monday, 22nd September at 7.15pm, where we will be welcoming our Inspector Jon Maine who will be explaining about the new Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The following meeting is on 17th November, Conference Room, Epping Hall at 7.15pm when Adam Pipe will be talking on Road Safety. Adam is with Essex Police and is well aware of the concerns of the residents in Epping. I have had conversations with him and he volunteered to come and speak to us. I invite those who have raised road safety issues with me to attend.

20mph speed limit in Epping

Fifty people a year are killed on our roads in Essex. Our community has an opportunity to significantly reduce the risk of death and serious injury in and around Epping.

The SERP (Safer Essex Roads Partnership) is seeking to explore whether there are communities that are pushing for a 20mph speed limit. They want to understand the level of support across Essex for this approach. It will be important if the community can show its support.

SERP wishes to understand the level of community support for lower limits in residential areas/communities. We would like to hear from you as to whether you’re interested in showing support for the introduction of a 20mph speed limit. Please use the link below to express your interest. https://forms.office.com/e/M7FAXC7LAL

Stonards Hill cable and path works starting soon

You will notice some works at Stonards Hill recreation ground starting in August 2025 and continuing for a few months. This will be marked out with temporary fencing and involves laying cables along the centre and replacing the central paths.

Epping Town Council have granted permission for the NHS Trust to lay cables under Stonards Hill recreation ground to assist with the installation of the new diagnostic centre at St Margaret’s Hospital. The NHS Trust will reinstate the grounds and relay a wider path for the recreation ground to help all users. There should be minimal disruption to the recreation ground and facilities. We will advise on any adjustments to parking arrangements.

Stonards Hill recreation ground was very kindly gifted to Epping by the Silley Family. Epping Town Council own and manage it on residents’ behalf and take great pride in its care and protection. Should you need any more information, please contact Epping Town Council by email on: info@eppingtowncouncil.gov.uk

We understand the Hospital’s new diagnostic centre is due to open in January 2026 and we are pleased to be able to support them in this important community facility in our town.

Epping in Bloom 10 year anniversary: volunteers celebrate a decade of dedication and friendship

Epping in Bloom recently marked its 10th anniversary in true celebratory style, proving that a shared love of gardening can blossom into lasting friendships and vibrant community spirit.

To commemorate a decade of transforming Epping with beautiful blooms, the dedicated volunteers embarked on a memorable few nights away in Harrogate. They stayed in the famous elegant Old Swan Hotel, a site steeped in history, where none other than legendary mystery writer Agatha Christie once stayed. Beyond enjoying the comforts of this historic place, the team explored the charming town of Harrogate. Their green fingers led them to the renowned RHS Harlow Carr garden, a highlight for any horticulture enthusiast. Adding another adventure to their trip, they hopped on a train to York, where they went on a river cruise and took in the city’s picturesque scenery together.

Over the past ten years Victoria Robertson the volunteer head gardener and chair of Epping in Bloom said: “It has been an honour to lead such a heartwarming team of people that all enjoy coming together to enhance our wonderful Epping community with blooms and art. We have cultivated deep friendships which is simply wonderful. We all share a passion for gardening which connects us together and with our visitors. We have a passion for enriching the lives of people throughout Epping who love to visit the garden.” We shall look forward to continuing celebrating with a few other lovely days out this year. If you’re inspired by our journey of gardening and friendship and would like to become part of the Epping in Bloom team, email: eppinginbloom@gmail.com

Classic Cars in the Park

The Rotary Club of Epping successfully hosted its highly anticipated annual event ‘Classic Cars in the Park’ on Sunday 20th July, at Stonards Hill recreation ground. Despite the rain, the community’s spirit soared as attendees enjoyed a vibrant display of classic cars and explored offerings from local businesses showcasing their products and services. The event featured handicrafts and delectable food including cakes and doughnuts, beverages provided by the Theydon Oak, a barbecue provided by Church’s Butchers, Sweets and Treats and Pixie Plants to name a few.

Engaging games and a raffle were held to raise money for local charities fostering a sense of camaraderie and goodwill. The Rotary Club of Epping extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and contributed, including businesses and stallholders for their participation and car enthusiasts for bringing their cars for everyone to enjoy.

A special thanks goes to Epping Town Council for allowing the use of the recreation ground and to the sponsors Foskett Marr Gadsby & Head solicitors, Funky Monk and Stevenette for their generosity and help in making the event a success.

Epping Hall office project

The offices of Epping Town Council at Epping Hall are currently being reconfigured to make a more productive working space. The windows, lack of air conditioning and poor accessibility were not adequate for the Town Council’s working area requirements. It is business as usual as the office team are based in the conference room during works. There will be an alteration to the stairwell to provide better use of the upstairs gallery and additional doors to manage visitors. The works should be completed by September 2025. The office team are contactable as usual by email, phone and doorbell during office hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm (excluding 12.30pm to 1.30pm).

Another great Epping Town Show

The annual Epping Town Show at Stonards Hill recreation ground on Sunday 6th July went ahead despite the mixed weather and heavy downpour, mid afternoon. There was a wide range of community, craft, trader and food vendor stalls which were manned throughout Sunday afternoon while arena entertainment included performances by the Epping Forest Band, Epping Forest Pipe Band, Illusions Dance Academy, a singing performance by Richard Stubbs from local band, Runaway Jukebox, Te Ashi Do Karate Demo, and a fun dog show sponsored by North Weald Veterinary Surgery. There were a range of other attractions at the free entry event including a funfair, a model railway display in the Jack Silley Pavilion, a climbing wall, donkey rides, Punch & Judy with Bubbles fun, as well as roving characters Bluey, Buzz Lightyear and Sonic the hedgehog.

Epping Town Council has expressed its grateful thanks to Premium Care Group for sponsoring this year’s show. Town Mayor councillor Janet Whitehouse said: “The Town Show was a wonderful event and I want to thank everyone who was involved - the town council staff for organising the event, those of you who performed in the arena, especially during the heavy downpours, and those who ran stalls and activities. There was so much to see and do. I visited many of the stalls but I regret I didn't manage to get to every one. Thank you also to those of you who came to the Show despite the uncertain weather forecast. Our annual Town Show which involves so many people shows the wonderful community spirit in our town.”

The council has also thanked Hammond and Smith which loaned letting boards to promote the event and Tescos for kindly donating water for the volunteers on the day. Look out for next year’s date and information. We start planning early so do make an enquiry if you are interested in taking part, whether as a sponsor, stall, entertainment or as a volunteer to help at the event.

Epping Town Show novelty Dog Show

Just before we were due to start our fun dog show, it poured with rain and we thought we were going to have to cancel. Thank you to all the dogs that attended the Show and stayed to take part, as the sun came out to shine on us.

The dog show was sponsored by North Weald Vets who supplied prizes for winners and runners up, plus healthy ‘teeth cleaning chews’ for all entrants. Our judges were from our Town Show sponsors, Premium Care Group. Their manager Danielle, plus two of their residents really enjoyed themselves selecting our winners. They did a brilliant job sorting out the best biscuit catcher, best trick, etc.

The Vet, Emma, from North Weald Vets asked each of our young handlers a question on pet care, which they answered correctly.

A list of prize winners: Waggiest tail: 1st George. Runner up Daphne. Best trick: 1st Turzo. Runner up Ellie. Child trainer/dog handler: Dobby Biscuit catcher: 1st Lola. Runner up Jessie.

Dog you’d like to take home: 1st Karl. Runner up Magpie.

Epping United Reformed Church celebrates 400th anniversary

Friends past and present gathered at one of the oldest non-conformist churches in the country, which has seen worship on the same site in Lindsey Street since 1625, for a special service on 11th May, which included a talk on the church’s 400-year history, special video messages from its twinned church of Mbare UPCSA in Harare, Zimbabwe and a presentation by the junior church. The packed church continued the celebration after the service by sharing a large buffet together.

Stephen Warner, an Elder of the church and professional musician, and Corrine Frost performed a concert at the church on 16th May, which also raised funds for the Epping Forest Foodbank.

The Revd Karen Knight, Minister of Epping URC, said: “What a wonderful start to our anniversary celebrations. Our anniversary service gave us an opportunity to celebrate our past and to look forward to our future with renewed hope and confidence, ready and willing to listen to God and be guided by the Holy Spirit.”

“Our celebration concert was full of good music and laughter, and we were left speechless at the gift and talent of Stephen and Corrine. Like most experts they made it look so easy whilst working terribly hard. I am thankful to have such a good team who worked tirelessly and continue to work to make this a very special year.”

In honour of the 400th anniversary, the church also produced a special book written and researched by church elder Jeremy Flack which explored its long history and many exhibits from the archives were also displayed. Highlights from the church’s history include the early radical and dissenting ministers Jeremiah Dyke and Nathaniel Ball establishing the church, a student David Livingstone preaching in the church in 1839, a visit by Dame Margaret Lloyd George to celebrate its 300th anniversary in 1925, the well-known hymn writer Revd Bryn Rees who was minister of the church in the 1970s and the rebuilding of the church into a modern worship centre in 1997.

More can be read about the church’s history on their website: https://eppingurc.org/history/

This application has been supported by lots of evidence submitted by our residents. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete one of our evidence forms and submit it to us.

The application is now with Epping Forest District Council’s legal team and we should know the outcome by September 2025.

Epping in Bloom scarecrow festival 2025 A weekend of wonderful creations

The Epping in Bloom Scarecrow Festival 2025 was an absolute triumph, filling our town with creativity, community spirit and plenty of laughs. The weekend was truly jampacked with fun, bringing together local businesses, residents and visitors for an unforgettable event. We were honoured to have the festival officially opened by Cllr Janet Whitehouse, the Mayor of Epping, who joined us in celebrating the incredible talent within our community. Her presence added a special touch to what was already a fantastic occasion.

A massive thank you goes out to everyone who made this year’s festival such a success. Your support, whether as a local business, a resident, or a visitor, is invaluable. Thanks to your generosity, we managed to raise £151, which will go towards making Epping even more beautiful.

Amazing Creations and This Year’s Winners

Once again, the scarecrow creations were simply amazing, showcasing the incredible imagination and skill of our participants. It’s clear why so many people say this festival is the highlight of their year – the dedication and artistry on display are truly inspiring. We’re committed to continuing this beloved tradition for our town for years to come. This year’s winners truly stood out:

* Epping Upland Church took home the 1st prize for the most votes with their lovely Green Lady creation. It was a testament to their creativity and community spirit. Local resident Roy wowed everyone with his ingenious traffic cone, which everyone agreed was an absolutely wonderful fox. His innovative approach certainly turned heads and made a great addition to this prize winning scarecrow.

* Our runner-up this year was Amanda from St John’s Road. Her scarecrow was a stunning lady crafted from flowers and moss, a true work of art that captivated voters. Amanda went the extra mile, enhancing her front garden with lots of other flowering and fruiting ideas that looked absolutely fantastic. She received the second most votes and we are so grateful for her beautiful contribution. Thank you to everyone who took part and supported the Epping in Bloom Scarecrow Festival 2025. Your enthusiasm makes this event possible and we can’t wait to host it again next year.

Daphnie, the Sensory Scarecrow

This is Daphnie, the Sensory Scarecrow, which was Epping Knit and Natter’s entry for the 2025 Scarecrow competition with Epping in Bloom. The theme was dementia awareness and we were pleased that she appeared to be well received. She is made from an old locally discarded coat stand and her arms and some of her body are made from discarded plum tree prunings. It has a kind of synergy with people living with dementia, who can feel sad and lost. There are things we can do to make life more comfortable and that is what our group have tried to do in making the scarecrow. The body is made from twiddle muffs, made by 3 of our members, which people with dementia and people with learning disabilities find helpful to twiddle with, providing a distraction from a need to pick, or to pull out intravenous lines, or other medically attached equipment. The twiddle muffs have been donated to St Clare Hospice, Ashlar Care Home residents, Epping; Basildon Hospital for patients with a learning disability and a couple given to local residents who needed them. The arms have been woven in part with residents at Ashlar house living with dementia at our monthly Knit and Natter session held at the residential home on the last Friday of the month. We find sometimes knitting can be tricky unless it has been embedded in your muscle memory but things like weaving and turning a handle on a knitting machine enables residents to be involved. It is thanks to a grant from Epping Forest District Council, Epping Sycamores Trefoil Guild members (adults Girlguiding unit) have been able to purchase two knitting machines and wool from our local wool shop, Sew and Sews, for these projects. Hanging off of the arms are twiddly things, crocheted by 4 of our members, which St Clare Hospice use for stimulation of their residents. They have been donated to them and to the community garden. We have reused the remainder of the scarecrow, which is now in place on a local allotment. So don’t forget Daphnie, or anyone living with dementia. Together we can enhance people’s lives living with dementia. If you are interested in joining Epping Knit and Natter and would like to be on our group WhatsApp, please message Janice on 07702 892956. We meet fortnightly on a Monday evening between 7.45pm-9.15pm at The Box during term time and community venues/homes in school holidays. We have people who like to knit, crochet and sew both their own projects and group projects who are welcome to join us. Please contact Janice if you are interested in the idea of Girlguiding for female adults too.

St Clare Hospice is thrilled to announce the official launch of their first Wild in Art sculpture trail. Lions on the Loose will be a bold and vibrant public art trail set to take over the streets and green spaces of Harlow and Epping in summer 2026. Our services are free of charge to those who need our care but cost over £8.1 million a year to run. With limited NHS funding we need to fundraise the majority of this each year through donations and other voluntary sources.

Restoring important habitats in Epping Forest

Want to learn more?

Epping Forest may look wild and unchanging, but its landscapes have been shaped by centuries of human intervention. Historically, local commoners maintained open areas by grazing animals and cutting trees through pollarding. As these traditional practices declined, holly and young trees spread, shading out valuable habitats such as meadows, glades and heathlands.

Today, these habitats are severely reduced. Heathland, once widespread, now covers just 18.1 hectares - only 0.7% of the Forest. Nationally, heathland has declined by 80% since the 1800s, making it one of the world’s rarest habitats.

To reverse this trend, Epping Forest will launch its largest-ever heathland restoration project at Long Running this autumn. It will start with contractors removing silver birch and young oak, which have encroached the heathland. These efforts aim to allow heathland plants like heather and creeping willow to return, supporting specialised wildlife from lizards to lichens to invertebrates.

Join one of our free Walks and Talks at Long Running East on Saturday 4 October, 9–11am or Wednesday 8 October, 11am–1pm.

Register your interest: Habitat Restoration Works – Long Running

The 2025 Habitat Restoration Programme will also restore ponds and pollards in Epping Thicks, enhance wildflower meadows at Sheppard’s Meadows, and improve conditions for veteran trees in Lower Forest.

How you can help:

· Be aware – Some works will need machinery, follow the signs to keep everyone safe.

· Be prepared – All of these works involve the removal of some trees and the results may initially look severe but will deliver long-term benefits for biodiversity and habitat resilience.

· Be gentle – Please avoid walking over the newly opened-up areas to give the rescued habitats time to emerge. Find out more at:

Epping Society — Defibrillators (AEDs) –yellow or orange boxes: life savers

A question was recently raised about the number and location of these life-saving machines in Epping. The enquirer came from a small village which has four. Together we could initially only think of about three here. So, detective work... There are websites like: https://www.defibfinder.uk/, which take you to a common source, with a map and a list of ten. We list them here, hoping that since they are on public media, the operators would not object — Epping Primary School, Marks & Spencer, Bakers’ Villas, The George & Dragon pub, Pellikaan (building site for new Sports Centre), The Box in St Johns Road, St John’s Church, dentist at 117 High Street, the existing Sports Centre and Tesco. Many thanks to these organisations for the care and cost involved. Unfortunately, the map is not precise, which could build in a delay; worse still perhaps is that the listings (location and access) are not particularly accurate. We would urge the organisations to check this information please. We then asked our members to keep an eye out; and other defibs came to light – there are at least another 13 around town. These include Julie’s café, Epping Forest District Council offices, the Catholic Church Hall and the tube station. It is likely that GP practices and chemists do too. We are asking their “keepers” if they would register them on the website. What matters if someone has a heart attack is finding the nearest defibrillator quickly. We hope to eventually put a full list on our website and perhaps at some key points in town. We will liaise with Epping Town Council on this. Another great idea would be if the places would consider displaying the small green sign at an outside point. Anyone phoning 999 can be given all defibrillator locations, also the Ambulance and groups like St John Ambulance have access to the full information; but this builds in a delay. Finally, we are exploring the possibility of placing a defibrillator in one of the two empty K9 red phone boxes in the High Street. The Epping Society

Have you

experienced a Gong Bath?

Step into a world of vibration, restoration and deep relaxation with the healing power of sound.

Gong Baths have been used for thousands of years to support well-being, meditation and ceremonial practice.

The gong—an ancient instrument with roots reaching back nearly 6,000 years— produces waves of sound that deeply resonate with the body, mind and spirit. The term “Sound or Gong Bath” is used because participants are literally bathed in soothing vibrations.

During a Gong Bath, you’ll be invited to lie down on a yoga mat or sit comfortably in a chair as a rich tapestry of sound washes over you. Many people report deep states of meditation, emotional release and a feeling of complete letting go, allowing tension to melt away and the nervous system to reset. Physical pain may ease, sleep often improves and a greater sense of calm and clarity can emerge.

Sarah Gregg of Reiki Drum & Sacred Sound Inspirations, a sound healer with over 25 years of experience, has been holding space for Gong and Sound Baths at Epping Hall for the past 10 years. Her sessions feature high-quality gongs, crystal and Himalayan singing bowls, chimes, flute, frame drum, and voice, creating a deeply layered soundscape.

Sarah holds regular events throughout the year, often aligned with Solstices, Equinoxes and other significant dates, offering an opportunity to reconnect with the natural rhythms of life. Come and experience the alchemy of sound in a safe, heart-centred space. Visit: www.reikidrum.co.uk or www.sacredsoundinspirations.co.uk (Events page} or for more details and bookings).
