Recognizing the Class of 2025: Achievements Made, Futures Awaiting

The Final Lap

Farewell, Pansie Evans!

Introducing Pansie Evans Court

Saint Life Highlights

Willy Wonka Jr., Fittest School Challenge, Violins of Hope, and more! 2025

Dear ESK Families & Friends,

The excitement and energy exhibited in our 2025 commencement ceremonies genuinely reflect the level of happiness and promise our students enjoy at The Episcopal School of Knoxville. This year’s class, like many others, represents the essence of what it means to be “ESK”- good character, competent learners, kind stewards, and forward thinkers. As we hang their graduation picture on the alumni wall, I have no doubt the success they have enjoyed during the foundational years at ESK will continue to flourish and shine.

This year marks the end of a decade for me on this campus, and I marvel at the pivotal change the academic world has made since my move to Knoxville. School safety, social media, pandemic responses, enrollment demand, mental health, and now artificial intelligence have all challenged us to assess our educational position, collaborate as a team, and innovate for new solutions. The times have indeed changed.

I cannot think of a better place than ESK to take on these new complexities in our world. Just like our graduates, the ESK community of families, faculty, and friends are grounded in goodness, confidence, care, and optimism for a bright future. How blessed we are, and together we will achieve greatness for our children.

Looking forward to it!

Bright Futures

Where Vision Meets Action

In response to the school’s strategic plan launched in 2023, the Board of Trustees has taken great strides in shaping ESK’s direction for a very successful future. Highlights that will take ESK to the next level include:

• A continued focus on academic excellence at the foundational years (JK-8th)

• Utilization of the campus as an outdoor classroom

• Celebration of the arts- visual and performing

• Character development for success

• Financial growth and affordability

• Facility expansion for a growing enrollment

The endeavor to support our strategic initiative has officially been named the Bright Futures Campaign and will seek to secure the funding needed to support facility expansion, student scholarships, faculty retention and growth, and program enhancements during the school’s first phase of growth. The board is excited to announce a team of enthusiastic and caring friends of the school who will be championing the Bright Futures Campaign:

• The Rev. Dr. Jerry Askew

• Mr. Joshua Bishop

• Mrs. Mary Ellen Brewington

• Mrs. Anna Graham

• Mr. Omar Jubran

• The Very Rev. John Ross

• Mrs. Lisa Rottmann

• Ms. Anne Sprouse

• Mrs. Stella Sudderth

We’re already seeing great progress in our strategic efforts with the lateral expansion to 3 sections in K, 1st, and 2nd grades, growth in teacher salaries, additional parking, and tennis courts. There is much more to come in the next few years, and without a doubt, our Future is indeed Bright.

The Harry W. Stowers Award was established in memory of Mr. Stowers who, with his wife, Sarah, actively supported Episcopal School of Knoxville. Though Mr. Stowers passed in 2007 and Mrs. Stowers in 2021, the Stowers family remain ardent supporters of ESK. Harry Stowers was a person of character. His commitment to service in his community, his strong faith, his intellectual curiosity, his gentle heart, and his compassion for others were evident throughout his life. The Harry W. Stowers Award recognizes an 8th grade student who most closely exemplifies Mr. Stowers’ character of service, faith, intellectual curiosity, gentleness of heart, and compassion for others.

Bishop Brian Cole delivered a heartfelt homily honoring the Class of 2025 during this year’s Baccalaureate service, offering words of encouragement and reflection as the graduates prepared to embark on their next academic chapter.

Willy Wonka Jr.

Once again, our middle school performers amazed us with their talent, as they brought Willy Wonka Jr. to life in a truly scrumdiddlyumptious production. With standout performances, whimsical staging, and the creative vision of Director, Mrs. Ashton Gallagher, the show transported us to a world of pure imagination.

Word Players: Walk, Don’t Ride

Our middle school students had the opportunity to watch Walk, Don’t Ride: A Celebration of the Fight for Equality, performed by Knoxville’s own WordPlayers Theatre Company. The play powerfully portrayed key moments of the Civil Rights Movement, from the Montgomery bus boycott to the Freedom Rides, highlighting

Movement, from the Montgomery bus boycott to the Freedom Rides, highlighting the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for justice. It left a lasting impact, reinforcing the values we hold at ESK: empathy, inclusion, and the belief that every voice matters and belongs.

Violins of Hope

Strings of the Holocaust

This spring, The Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust exhibit, hosted by the Stanford Eisenberg Knoxville Jewish Day School, filled our hallways with living history. Through this impactful experience, students delved into the story of the Holocaust and discovered how the surviving instruments served, and continues to serve, as a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.

Fit, Fast, and First: ESK Wins the Challenge!

We’re excited to share that ESK has won The Fittest School Challenge as part of the 2025 Covenant Health Kids Run, thanks to achieving the highest percentage of student participation across the region! This achievement reflects our students’ energy, our families’ support, and the tireless efforts of Pansie Evans, whose dedication makes this event so special each year—way to go, ESK!

Digging Into

Our sixth graders recently had the incredible opportunity to hear from Harry Moore, a retired geologist

Our first graders took their ocean exploration to new depths this year by hosting their largest Ocean Conference yet! They shared their knowledge with the wider ESK community, highlighting the importance of ocean conservation and showcasing the incredible diversity of marine life and habitats we are called to protect.

Celebration of the Arts

Middle School Spotlight

Asthe school year comes to a close, the bold and avant-garde expressions of our students’ growth

take center stage in a Celebration of the Arts, thoughtfully curated by the visionary minds of our art departments.

The hallways burst with color, lined with artwork created throughout the year, each piece reflecting imagination and growth. Meanwhile, the gymnasium comes alive with music as the Middle School string band and choral groups share their talents, filling the space with spirit. The day concludes with a joyful talent show, a fitting finale that celebrates the boundless creativity of our students and the powerful role the arts play in their journey at ESK.

The talent show bringsthe creativity with some seriously cool choreography!

Artwork from core classroom subjects is also showcased, including this popular independent study project from a 5thgrade literature class.

The Final Lap: Honoring Pansie Evans’

Decades of

Dedication to Physical Education

This year has brought yet another major farewell, one that touches the hearts of almost every student who has walked the halls of ESK since nearly its inception. This spring, after more than two decades of whistles blown, sneakers laced, and life lessons shared far beyond the gym walls, Coach Evans gathered with us to say goodbye. This special chapel service honored the extraordinary legacy of Mrs. Pansie Evans as she hangs up her stopwatch and steps into a well-earned retirement.

With boundless energy, a booming voice that could rise above the noisiest gym, and a heart big enough for every student, Mrs. Evans transformed PE class into something far greater than just sports. It was about teamwork, perseverance, respect, and discovering the confidence within.

Her legendary Field Days were a beloved tradition year after year, bursting with imaginative challenges that united the entire school in laughter, teamwork, and friendly competition. So iconic were these events that they inspired the centerpiece of our farewell celebration, where faculty paid tribute by donning themed costumes from Field Days past.

As she steps away from the court and into a new chapter, her impact endures, echoing in the loud laughter of the gym, in the collaboration of students working side by side, and in the confidence of every child who walked a little taller because of her care. And now, that legacy lives on in a special way, on the newly dedicated Pansie Evans Court, nestled inside Kline Gymnasium.

Lucy Tyler, Leslie Downey, Red Waller, Deb Sousa, Pansie Evans, Chris Bishop, and Miranda Clark, all long-time members of the ESK tribe, share a rare moment all together.

We say goodbye to her daily presence, but not to her lasting influence. Thank you, Mrs. Evans, for shaping bodies, minds, and hearts. Enjoy every step of your well-deserved retirement. You’ve run your race with strength, joy, and grace. And the finish line has never looked so triumphant.

In
tribute, the ESK faculty organized a parade of Field Day themes, celebrating over two decades of unmatched creativity and joyful spirit brought to life by the legendary Pansie Evans.
