THE LAST TIME THEY MET ... ROCKY MOUNTAIN 45 EASTERN 55 Billings, Mont. Oct. 2, 2010 Sunny * 80 degrees BILLINGS, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon University football team won its third straight game, in another offensive showcase with Rocky Mountain College, 55-45. In a game that featured over 1,100 yards of offense and 100 points, the Mountaineers (3-3) (3-2). Kevin Sampson ran for 201 yards and EOU finished with 612 total yards on offense. Chris Ware completed 25 of his 37 passes for 304 yards. Kasey Peters led RMC with 409 yards through the air and completed 36 of his 56 passes. “Our kids played very hard today,” EOU head coach Tim Camp said. “I’m very proud of the fight this team has. There are three phases to the game, and each phase played a part in this team victory. I’m very proud of my coaching staff.” Sampson’s 201 yards came on 34 carries. The junior came into the game leading the Frontier Conference with an average of 128 yards per game on the ground. Ware entered the game leading the league in passing yards per game with an average of 208 yards per contest. Michael Thomas led the Battlin’ Bears on the ground with 114 yards on 13 carries. RMC finished with 173 rushing yards, while Eastern had 308. Rocky Mountain outgained the Mountaineers through the air, 409 to 304. Peters found Mark Desin on 10-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring four minutes into the game. Six minutes later Ware connected with Dillon Bedford for a 17-yard touchdown strike. The second quarter was full of scoring beginning with a 22-yard field goal from Eastern’s Nick Knell. The Bears responded with a field goal of their own from 23 yards away. A pair of Ware touchdown passes to Kirk Miller and Maurice Culpepper gave the Mountaineers a 24-10 lead. Peters cut the lead to seven with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Levi Sutton with 16 seconds left in the first half. Knell would close the half with a 20-yard field goal after a great kickoff return. The Battlin’ Bears opened the second half in dramatic fashion when Peters connected with AJ Tolbert for a 75-yard touchdown. Sampson then took a Ware handoff in for a 19-yard run with 13:44 remaining in the third quarter. Peters and Sutton connected for another touchdown from four yards out six minutes later. Ware kept the ball for a 15-yard touchdown run on the ensuing Mountaineer possession. Peters and Desin connected again with 1:14 left in the quarter on a six-yard pass. A Sampson 12-yard touchdown run opened the fourth quarter scoring. Thomas would score just 18 seconds later on a 58-yard touchdown run. Neither team would find the endzone until Sampson ended a 14-play, 89-yard drive with a fiveyard carry with two minutes left in regulation. Ware found 10 different Mountaineer receivers Saturday, and Jake Burroughs led with five catches for 40 yards. Miller led EOU with 45 yards on four catches. Sutton and Tolbert each went over 100 yards receiving for RMC. Sutton caught 12 passes for 125 yards and Tolbert had four catches for 106 yards. Rocky Mountain’s Steffan Blume finished with a game-high 16 tackles. Trenton Thelen and Thomas Ackerman each had 15 tackles. Marc-Avery Airhart had a team-high 11 tackles for Eastern and Howard McDonald added 10. Max Hannah intercepted a pass for the Mountaineers.

EOU MOUNTAINEERS FOOTBALL GAME NOTES * 4 EASTERN OREGON IN THE POLLS THE SAMPSON Week NAIA VSN Kevin Sampson became the fourth player in school history to run for 1,000 Preseason 21 21 yards in a single season this year. The junior has amassed 1,135 yards on Sept. 13 NR NR Sept. 20 NR NR the ground this season. The Seattle native is currently fourth on the AllSept. 27 NR NR Time EOU rushing list. Sampson is 89 yards away from breaking the single Oct. 4 RV NR Oct. 11 NR NR season rushing record at Eastern as well. He is fourth all-time on the EOU Oct. 18 RV NR All-Purpose yards in a career (2,663) list, and broke the single season Oct. 25 RV NR Nov. 1 RV 25 record for All-Purpose yards in a season (1,679) school record last week. LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN? Eastern is playing for its seventh six-win season in the school’s 81-year football history. With a victory Saturday the Mountaineers would be 6-5 for the year. There has only been 20 seasons in the program’s history that have ended with a record above .500. EOU last put back-to-back winning seasons together in 1979 and 1980. Eastern Oregon went 6-4 in 1979 and 8-1 in 1980, the best season in the school’s history. THE SACKMASTER Seath Kimball currently ranks first in the NAIA in total sacks with 11.5 this season. The senior already owns six school records, and is on pace to a couple more before graduating. The Wenatchee, Wash. native is first in the NAIA in total tackles for loss (20.0). He has 50 total tackles this season and has pushed opponents back with 102 yards from tackles for loss. Kimball also ranks first in the NAIA in sacks and tackles for loss per game. RIGHT WHERE THEY LEFT OFF The Mountaineers broke 30 school records a year ago, and the current Eastern squad has been doing some breaking of their own. EOU has set 14 new school marks in 2010 through 10 games. The Mountaineers are on pace for several more records this year as well. COMEBACK KIDS Eastern is 3-3 this season when opponents score first and 2-2 when it scores first. In the games EOU has won this season it has outscored opponents 70-17 in the final quarter. In the four losses this year, the Mountaineers have been outscored 66-23 in the first quarter. Eastern Oregon has been outscored 101-75 in 2010 in the opening quarter of play altogether in 2010. BATTLE IN THE AIR Eastern Oregon and Rocky Mountain have two of the most prolific offenses in the NAIA. The programs lead the Frontier Conference in passing offense per game and are near the top of the nation. EOU is 16th in the NAIA with 2,389 passing yards this season, and the Bears are sixth with 2,686 yards through the air. Conversely, the two passing defenses are near the bottom of the conference, RMC is fourth allowing an average of 236.9 passing yards per game and Eastern is sixth allowing an average of 275.9 yards.

Saturday’s Two Deep Rosters The Mountaineers have piled up first downs this season. Eastern is second in the Frontier Eastern Oregon Offensive Two Deep Conference in first downs per game (23.9). SHINING STARR Eastern’s Kedrick Starr has had a breakout redshirt freshman season. He has been named the Victory Sports Network National Special Teams Player of the Week this season, and has returned a kickoff for a touchdown and a punt for a touchdown. The Meridian, Idaho native is first in the NAIA in kickoff return yards this season (1,003). THIRD DOWN THUNDER Eastern is 17th in the NAIA in converting on third downs this season. The Mountaineers have made a first down on 65 of the 149 third downs this season. That’s an average of 43.6 percent of the time. A NEW FRONTIER The Mountaineers have many players atop the conference in statistical categories. Chris Ware leads total offense and passing yards per game. Kevin Sampson leads rushing yards per game. Max Hannah leads interceptions per game. Seath Kimball leads sacks per game. Nick Knell leads field goals made per game. Kedrick Starr leads kickoff return yards per game. SOME OF THE BEST Along with Kedrick Starr and Seath Kimball’s rankings in the NAIA, some other Mountaineers are near the top of the nation in statistical categories. Kevin Sampson is third in total rushing yards (1,135) and fourth in total all-purpose yards (1,679). Max Hannah is fifth in interceptions with seven this year. Howard McDonald and Dallas Smith are each fifth with forced fumbles per game. Chris Ware is seventh in total offensive yards (2,757). Nick Knell is ninth with 11 made field goals this year.
