As a mom to two school-age children, she makes time to create as a means to find her way back to herself. Block printing is the art form of choice lately, but watercolors, acrylic painting and digital art are the main mediums used in their art. Sustainability and resourcefulness are core values in her small business which means most items used in daily operations such as iPad, printers and paper were sourced second-hand along with surfaces to paint on like wood plaques, handbags and clothing. The results are in! Our 2025 Astoria Warrenton Crab, Seafood & Wine event was held Saturday, March 15 at the historic Liberty Theatre in downtown Astoria, Oregon. Our wine competition was open to all bonded Oregon wineries that have been accepted as vendors at the 2025 Astoria Warrenton Crab, Seafood & Wine Festival. There were 17 wineries that submitted wines for the competition.
In 1990, Jeff moved to the north coast and became the executive chef at the Astoria Golf & Country Club. After his time at the club, he then became general manager at the Wayfarer restaurant in Cannon Beach, where he continued his achievements in cooking competitions.
In February of 2001, Jeff and his wife Laurie, who is a native Astorian, opened the Silver Salmon Grille in downtown Astoria. The Martins hosted many wine makers dinners at the restaurant throughout the years. Jeff also served as the chef for over wine makers dinners at The Cellar on 10th in Astoria. The opportunity to taste such a broad number of wines while planning the pairing of the courses helped educate his pallet.
Jeff is also an undefeated three time champion of the Iron Chef Goes Coastal cooking competition in Seaside, Oregon.
Cyndi has been in the wine industry since 2006, starting by pouring wine for special events. She didn’t know much at that time, but when she tasted a delicious Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, she knew her destiny. She has been involved in events such as Pinot Camp, IPNC , and had the honor to judge in wine competitions showcasing Northwest Wines. She was deemed Pinot Princess from her friend David Adelsheim. She looks forward to judging the wines in this competition.
Kerry McDaniel Boenisch is an author, speaker, wine judge and “Wine Sisters Cheers to Change” Vlog co-host with Atlanta, Georgia Corks and Cuvee wine store owner Regina Jones Jackson. She is currently working on her fourth book, Fall Down, Stand Up, Learning From Loss Amidst the Vines— The Beginners Guide to Grieving, Empty-nesting and Finding Joy, due out this fall. Her three books are Vineyard Memoirs, Dirt+Vine=Wine and Intertwined— Grief, Gratitude and Growing a Vineyard.
Nicole has always been intrigued by wine. She still remembers the first bottle of wine she purchased while in college. It was a cabernet sauvignon from Chateau St. Michelle. “It opened my horizons to a new world. I realized a bottle of wine was not just another bottle of alcohol.” In 2009, her husband’s job took them to smack dab in the middle of Russian River Valley, Ca. then to Paso Robles/Edna Valley Area. It was destiny. When they moved back to Washington state, she came across a post online about certifications in wine with a comment about the Certified Wine Judging Program. It is a 3-year program through the American Wine Society. The program had led her to pursue the WSET 2 and 3 certifications. Nicole finished the Certified Specialist of Wine last year. She say, “I enjoy learning more about wine immensely. Besides hitting the books, I truly enjoy visiting wineries to learn in depth. I also found precious friendships while wine judging with people from all over the country with the common love for great art of wine.”
In the autumn of 1981, Chamber members Dan Andriesian, Bill Pitman, Jim Durham, Bobbie McCallister, Jean Anderson, Chuck Farmer and Dorothy Comstock were charged with bringing people to the area in the off season. The committee came up with the idea of a crawfish festival, and soon decided that “Crab and Seafood” had a more appealing name. Dan assumed the helm amid many comments of “hairbrained” and grumblings of wasted time and money allocated that first year. Andriesian continued to plan, for “The Great Astoria Crab Feed and Seafood Festival” and in a moment of optimism, ordered 800 crabs for the dinner!
As it turned out the one-day event held on March 27, 1982, in a 10,000 squarefoot building (the current Red Building) drew an estimated 6,000 people. The 800 crab dinners sold for $7.50 and they were gone by 5:30 p.m. There were 30 booths offering food, Oregon wines, and crafts, and the Rotary Club featured a beer garden. There were tours of commercial and charter fishing boats, and films of local sea life. The USCG 44-foot motor lifeboat and the CCC Forerunner were tied up at the pier so people could look at those boats close-up.
The festival would be a yearly celebration, moving to several places as it grew. It was at Pier 1 warehouse, Pier 2 in a new building, a Tongue Point Hanger, Warrenton City Park, Camp Rilea, the Hammond Mooring Basin, and finally settled in the Clatsop County Fairgrounds in 2002. We can conclude that “hairbrained” ideas have a positive way of working for this chamber as long as there are people that work to make it happen!
The festival is a big part of this community, and the community is a big part of the festival’s success. The Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce appreciates the continued support from all our vendors, contractors, sponsors, volunteers and attendees. Thank you for being a part of our first four decades. Let’s do it again next year!

Ellen Front fronts the multi award winning band, Ellen Whyte Ensemble. Together, the combination of their considerable talents gives us something that is not rock, not folk, not blues, but something hypothetical as the name “Jane Doe” suggests. All it takes is two exceptional voices and two guitars to pull it off.

Imagine if Neil Young and Janis Joplin had three love children, and those children grew up to like folk rock and hip hop. The Junebugs combine high-energy pop and rock with Pacific Northwest folksy goodness to create a genre-bending sound you can kick up your heels to. The Junebugs originated on the Vancouver, BC circuit before moving back home to Portland, OR. There, guitarist Barrett picked up drummer Kyle Owen and bassist Nathaniel Daniel, to round out the dynamic trio. Covering everything from Tom Petty to TLC to Lorde, the eclectic taste of the trio ranges from turn-of-thecentury Americana to modern Hip Hop, with a strong emphasis on vocal harmony. Born from the rich, cultural heart of Southern Italy and matured in the United States, Mbrascatu (mmbrah-ska-too) is the product of Andrea Algieri and some of the west coast’s finest musicians. While the music is not locked into any one regional sound, the diverse and global influences can all be heard in how Algieri organically blends styles. Thoughtful ballads, intense rock, and infectious, danceable grooves are at the core of the band’s sonic identity - coupled with Andrea’s warm, baritone voice and soloists with backgrounds in rock, funk, jazz, classical, folk, and more, the resultant sound is something not often seen in today’s musical landscape. The heartfelt messages contained within the sensitive lyrics translate across cultural and linguistic divides, and the panoramic storytelling conveyed within each song takes the listener on a journey through both, a world they know dearly and one they are just discovering.
