hen I was about ten years old, my mother, my two sisters and I lived with my aunt and uncle for a brief time. This was my first experience living with a person with a disability. My uncle was born sighted, but by the age of eight or so, a genetic condition was reducing his sight. By the age of ten, he was completely blind. In his 30s when we moved in with him, he was an accomplished stock broker. I remember being amazed at how well he managed for a man who couldn't see and I learned a lot from him. Note: This was in the 70s, before personal computers and the internet. I learned how brilliant braille was, and that there were watches where the face opened so he could touch the hour and minute hands and know the time. I quickly learned to close the kitchen cabinet doors so he wouldn't run into them and get poked in the eye (yes, I admit, I learned the hard way). I learned that the best way for him to read was with books on tape. He had a machine where he could speed up the reader... boy could he listen fast! One day, he let me go with him to his office and I learned that there was a ticker-tape machine that printed out the stock information in braille! I remember that he was very good at his job and was financially quite successful. I guess the main things I learned from Uncle Richard is that having a disability just means you do things a bit differently than those without a disability, and goals and dreams are very much attainable regardless.

What Makes Great Engineers? by Sir David McMurtry

What makes a great engineer? What makes them able to innovate and invent? What qualities enable them to have such a positive impact on the world?

Great Engineers Have A Unique Mix Of Qualities

Engineers have a unique mix of qualities that make them stand out from the crowd. Many students reading this page will already have them – yes, maybe you were born to be an engineer, and a great one at that. The greatest inventions in the world simply wouldn't have happened without engineers. Jet engines, railways, cars, computers, smart phones, the internet, 3D-printing etc. – they needed special people to create them. They needed great engineers. But what makes a great engineer? What is it that makes them able to innovate and invent? What qualities enable them to have such a positive impact on the world?

Renishaw is a world leader in engineering, employing 100's of engineers in the UK. Here's what we believe are the characteristics students have that help make them into a great engineer:

Mathematical

You'll also be pretty good at maths as well. You'll like doing calculations and solving mathematical problems – let's face it you're good with numbers.

Creative

It's not though all about science and maths either, far from it. Great engineers have a very good imagination and are creative too. You need to come up with ideas, new products, systems and processes.

Great engineers have a very good imagination and are creative too.

Accurate

Of course, whatever kind of engineering you're interested in,

Page 4

equal opportunity employment journal

accuracy is very important. Gadgets, machines and vehicles don't work if a component part doesn't do its job properly. So you'll be good with detail, a perfectionist even.

either, you're good with words. You'll enjoy working in a team, communicating your ideas and listening to others. You like working with people.

Technical

You're interested in technical things. You like to understand how things work and enjoy fixing them. At school you're enjoying the sciences, particularly physics. You like to make things, electronic circuits perhaps, machines, Lego creations. Maybe you enjoy software coding.

Problem solver

You'll also need to be able to analyze a problem, think things through in a structured, logical order, cover all the angles, and arrive at the best technical solution.

Educated

You also like learning and expanding your knowledge. You always like to know more about the latest technology and gadgets. You want to be an expert.

Team player and communicator

and clear communication – with customers, suppliers and fellow engineers. So teamwork is a key ingredient of a successful career in engineering and you'll be working with the smartest and most interesting of like-minded professionals.

Exploring the world

HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY ENGINEERING IS A REALLY GREAT CAREER:

Job satisfaction

What better career to make the most of your interest in science and maths? As a professional engineer, you get to tackle real problems and find the best solutions. It demands creative, imaginative and logical thinking. The world changes constantly, so too does engineering. Every working day is different.

Teamwork

You're not just good with numbers

November 2023

Creating the best solutions to complex problems also requires close collaboration

You can even travel the world with a career in engineering. Engineering industries are global industries, spanning the Americas, Asia and Europe. Engineering projects can be all over the world and meeting customers and investigative fieldwork are important parts of many different engineering jobs.

Making a difference

Is there another career where you can make such a direct impact on the world? You might be helping to build a high efficiency aero engine; energy-efficient homes; life-saving medical equipment; self-driving cars, a whole new form of renewable energy. The opportunities to make a positive difference to the world are endless. Article provided by www.renishaw.com, data driven manufacturing systems and software. Surviving Working at Home Fatigue: 5 Tips W orking from home has become the reality for millions of people all over the world, and this set-up is not about to change anytime soon. In fact, more and more employers are willing to offer the opportunity of working from home for employees. If you've been working from home for the past year and it doesn't look like you're going anywhere else anytime soon, here are some tips to stave off the WFH fatigue.

Create A Clear Home/Work Boundary

For many people who are used to working at the office, what makes WFH a big adjustment is the fact that lines between work and home become blurry or worse, disappeared completely. This is not hard to understand, especially for those whose home-towork commutes were shortened into the few minutes it took to jump up from the bed and sit in front of the computer. Experts

recommend creating routines to replace the commute to work, such as taking a shower, dressing up, and getting your morning cup of coffee before sitting down to do some serious work.

Get Regular Exercise

Exercise is still the best solution for a variety of WFHrelated ills. Exercise takes your mind off from work, gives you a boost of endorphins, and helps keep your muscles toned and strong even if you stay indoors for most of the day.

Get Some Sun Every Day

If you have a yard or even a small outdoor balcony, get some sun for some essential vitamin D. Go out and have some morning sunshine with your coffee--it can help boost your mood and get you in the right mental state for the day's work ahead. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Working from home set-ups are best done in places where you can focus on the work and nothing else. This is difficult to do at home, especially for those with small kids or other family members. While some are lucky enough to have a spare bedroom that they cant convert into a home office, others may not have that luxury. Opt for the laundry room or a walk-in pantry if you really need privacy. A corner in the kitchen or the living room can be turned into a semi-private office area with a cheap foldable room divider or screen that you can buy from any home store.

Working from home requires some major changes in how we live and work. But with a few adjustments and creative tweaks, you can make this new normal work for you and your loved ones.

Working from home can get old fast if you juggle work and home duties simultaneously. Avoid multi-tasking by blocking off work hours. Be strict about the distinction between your work and home tasks. 1. Machine Learning Engineer

The university’s newly-appointed Vice-Chancellor Designate Zeblon Vilakazi has recently spoken about his dreams of transforming Wits University into an innovation hotbed and deliver the same world-changing technologies as MIT in the US. “We need to continue to develop the originators, innovators and critical thinkers who can help us solve the problems of the 21st century,” he said. So, if you want to pursue a career in artificial intelligence, data science or software development, what kind of jobs should you look for? What skills do you need to get hired? What type of salary can you expect? Let’s take a look at some of the top careers that are redefining the technology industry.

AE Business Solutions is a leading IT and Talent Acquisition company serving enterprise organizations in the Upper Midwest.

This specific branch of artificial intelligence is ideal for those who have a passion for computer science and desire a career in a fast-moving and exciting industry. Machine learning engineers use big data to create complex algorithms to ultimately program a machine (such as a selfdriving car or digital voice assistant) in order to perform and carry out tasks like a human. Economic forecasting, image recognition and natural language processing are implemented so that the machine can learn and improve without human interference. What degree do you need? A knowledgeable background in artificial intelligence and/or computer science is a must, with a master’s degree also essential. At Wits University, both the MSc in Artificial Intelligence and MSc in Computational and Applied Mathematics offer pioneering curriculums where students develop an in-depth understanding of data visualization, natural language technology, and computational intelligence in order to analyze problems and create meaningful solutions.

2. UX Designer

UX (User eXperience) designers are concerned with the ‘behind-the-scenes’ design of ensuring software, websites, or apps meet the consumers’ habits, motivations, behaviors and needs. With more and more businesses turning to digital platforms to promote and sell their products or services, it’s never been so important to ensure the user journey and experience is the best it can be. What degree do you need? A relevant undergraduate degree such as computer science is needed, while a

society and business function – particularly in healthcare. What degree do you need? A master’s in robotics or computer science will set you up with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to break into the field of robotics engineering.

4. Data Scientist

Dubbed the ‘sexiest job of the 21st century’, data science jobs aren’t new and emerging like other tech jobs such as cloud computing engineers (more on them later), or machine learning engineers, but they’re still the hidden gem within any company and will continue to be. As businesses and organizations collect and use more data every day, the demand for skilled experts has skyrocketed. With opportunities to work in practically every sector and industry, from IT to entertainment, manufacturing to healthcare, it’s the responsibility of data scientists to compile, process, analyze and present data for an organization in order for it to make

3. Robotics Engineer

As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, robotics engineers are having to constantly analyze, reevaluate, configure, test and maintain the prototypes, robotic components, integrated softwares and machines they create for the manufacturing, mining and automotive service industries, among others. It is a highly technical job which requires patience and rational thinking. Over the next few years, it’s likely that we’ll see a number of new and innovative ways in which modern technologies help

more informed decisions. For example, in June this year, six undergraduate students from the School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (CSAM) and the School of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) at Wits University took part in a virtual event for the ISC Student Cluster Competition alongside 82 other students from around the world. They were tasked with testing and optimizing several applications currently used by scientists and researchers in the analysis of COVID-19 data in real time and the effects of global warming around the world. Students were also given two additional advanced coding challenges by the judges to assess whether they could successfully adapt to the fastchanging world of artificial intelligence. What degree do you need? To stand out in the field of data science, a solid understanding of data science and analytics is vital. A relevant postgraduate degree in computational and applied mathematics, data science, or e-science from Wits University develops students’ data-driven knowledge and technical skillsets.

5. Cloud Engineer

Over the last few months, cloud computing has become a must-have for those working remotely. At the same time, organizations have been frantically hiring those with the skills and knowledge who can migrate processes, implement the necessary infrastructures and perform cloud-related tasks. Cloud engineers are often titled under different roles, including solutions architects, cloud developers and sysops engineers. In some instances, the roles and responsibilities will vary, but the overall responsibility of a cloud engineer is to plan, monitor and manage an organization’s cloud system, such as Google Cloud, Microsoft 365, and Slack, to name but a few. What degree do you need? As with many of today’s tech careers, a postgraduate degree is almost always required along with relevant professional experience. Students who study the MSc in Computer Science at Wits University can study a range of electives including (but not limited to), high performance computing and scientific data management, robotics, adaptive computation and machine learning, multi-agent systems, and human computer interaction. Page 13

WHY CHOOSE US?

Here in the First Community family (First National Bank Texas,

W

ith one in four U.S. adults currently job seeking, it’s a competitive market, but experts say that finding your dream job is within reach if you use smart strategies. “A well-executed job search that combines powerful search tools and the right mindset will connect you with companies that value their employees and set them up to thrive,” says Kristin Kelley, chief marketing officer of CareerBuilder. As you get your job search under way, consider these five tips and insights from CareerBuilder:

1. Define Your Dream Job

Research shows that the goals and desires of job seekers vary by industry. However, whether you’re an administrative assistant, a retail worker or a software developer, it’s important to define what matters to you in a job, as doing so will help you narrow your search. This means nailing down details like your salary requirements, while also considering intangible factors, such as whether the work will allow you to make an impact and whether the company’s values and culture align with yours.

2. Build A Better Resume

A resume is often the first point of connection between you and your next job, yet knowing its importance can make it feel daunting to create. To make a great impression with a minimal amount of effort, check out online tools like CareerBuilder’s “Create Resume” feature. The platform allows you to create multiple variations of your resume that call out specific areas of expertise as they may relate to particular roles. The site has already outlined the most important fields for you to fill in, making it easy to authentically highlight a mix of hard and soft skills that will get you noticed by top employers.

3. Streamline Your Search

Work smart, not hard. Rather than apply for jobs individually, turn to a job search platform that will make your profile and resume available to thousands of employers. In the case of CareerBuilder, you don’t actually need to register for an account to search through its millions of job listings. Search for

Celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month The 2023 NDEAM theme is “Advancing Access and Equity.”

Held every October, NDEAM is a fitting time to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.

N

DEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), but its true spirit lies in the many observances held at the grassroots level across the nation every year. The Campaign for Disability Employment encourages organizations of all sizes and in all industries to participate in NDEAM. For specific ideas on supporting NDEAM, visit the website dol. gov/ndeam. Suggestions range from simple, such as displaying a poster, to comprehensive, such as implementing a disability education program. However you choose to take part, you’ll be playing an important role in fostering a more inclusive workforce, one where every person is recognized for their abilities—every day of every month.

IDEAS FOR EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES

The workplace is an important part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) The ideas below are just a few ways employers and their employees can participate, during October and all year long. For additional inspiration, check out Beyond NDEAM: YearRound Employer Strategies for Advancing Disability Inclusion .

Review Policies

NDEAM is an opportune time to review your company’s policies to ensure they convey a commitment to an inclusive workplace culture. For assistance in doing so, see Inclusion@ Work (in particular the first section, “Lead the Way: Inclusive Business Culture”).

Establish An Employee Resource Group

NDEAM is a perfect time to launch a disability Employee Resource Group (ERG). Sometimes referred to as Employee Networks or Affinity Groups, ERGs offer employees an opportunity to connect and receive support from others with similar backgrounds or interests. For more information, see

A Toolkit for Establishing and Maintaining Successful Employee Resource Groups. If your company already has a disability ERG,

consider using NDEAM to remind employees about it through displays, information tables or other communication channels.

Create A Display

NDEAM is a great time to freshen up bulletin boards in break areas or other locations that employees frequent by posting positive messages about your company’s commitment to a disability-inclusive workforce. Start by putting up this year’s NDEAM poster, available English and Spanish. in Additional display materials include the “What Can YOU Do?” poster series.

Educate Employees

It is critical that companies committed to disability inclusion effectively and regularly reinforce that commitment to employees. NDEAM offers an opportunity to do this through disability training or informal educational events such as brown-bag lunch discussions. Several ready-to-use resources can assist in facilitating such activities, such as disability etiquette materials and the “I Can” public service announcement and accompanying workplace discussion guide. Another option is to contact local disability organizations to see if they offer workplace training programs.

Participate in Disability Mentoring Day

Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development for youth with disabilities through hands-on programs, job shadowing and ongoing mentoring. The nationwide observance is the third Wednesday of each October, but companies may choose to host their own events on any day of the month (or year for that matter). The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) offers information to assist in implementing a Disability Mentoring Day event. jobs using filters like degree requirement, keywords, industry and mileage radius, then apply for positions directly on the site. A salary search function, along with career advice and tips, make it an invaluable one-stop site for job seekers.

4. Prepare For Interviews

Preparing answers to common interview questions and even practicing with a spouse or friend beforehand can help you feel competent and confident when the real interview rolls around. For behavioral questions, CareerBuilder recommends using the STAR method, in which you describe the Situation, Task, Action and Result to explain how you would act in specific work situations.

5. Check The Terms

A dream job is only a dream job if the terms of employment suit you. Before signing a contract, check such details as compensation, start date, the company’s leave policy, professional development opportunities, perks and benefits, as well as items that could impact you in the future, like nondisclosure agreements. If you plan to negotiate, decide whether you’ll take the job if the employer doesn’t modify the contract. Stay courteous and professional throughout the process. For more career advice, or to register and search for jobs, visit careerbuilder.com/jobs. Landing a dream job can be a labor intensive process. However, leaning on new tools and tech to do some of the groundwork for you can help ensure you start your new position with purpose and energy. Article provided by Statepoint.net

4 Reasons Why Military Veterans Make Great Cops

Whether you’re a police agency looking for new recruits or a military veteran looking for a new career, you can be confident that veterans can make great cops. However, many police executives unfamiliar with the military and the way they build their service members into professionals may pass on a great law enforcement candidate due to a lack of experience with these men and women. Some police administrators may even have a preconceived notion that combat veterans may be a liability and keep the veteran from a fair crack at wearing a gun belt someday. After 30 years of serving the military and law enforcement communities let me share four qualities that make military veterans excellent candidates for careers in law enforcement.

1. TEAM PLAYERS Military veterans are not only trained to contribute to a team in order to thrive but they also learn that they have to count on a team to survive. Service members that have trouble with this concept are identified and extra training follows. Troops who can’t participate as a team member will meet various fates but they won’t be allowed to hold their unit back.

Identifying the problem service member who may be on your hiring list is simple. The obvious answer is the military records provided with his employment packet but the best answer is contacting his military supervisors. A call to his former unit and a couple short conversations with his former First Sergeant or Platoon Sergeant or Platoon Leader will provide you an honest assessment of the veteran’s personal qualities.

This a great way to measure a veterans qualities and attributes because activeduty military leaders say exactly what’s on their mind and they will not hesitate to share the good with the bad. When it comes to law enforcement, working as a team player with other cops and following orders from supervisors are important factors for professional success.

Service members typically enter the military at a young age. They are taught to be leaders at every rank. Often, by the time they are 21 they may be leading a squad or holding a highly skilled position within their unit. The military spends great time and effort training their leaders. Promotions come with exceptional leadership schools that are not available in law enforcement. Their ability to function as leaders will provide an agency a valuable resource that is hard to come by. Military veterans often will be the quiet professional in a squad, never complaining and always pushing forward.

2. COMMUNICATORS

From the time they exit the cattle wagon at boot camp to the time they exit the military, service members are taught to communicate confidently and concisely. They learn to speak with efficiency and clarity because survival may depend on their message and how it’s delivered. That’s why so many veterans who recently have departed from the military will speak with short and concise sentences. I have witnessed law enforcement leaders mistake this quality in a veteran recruit for a bad attitude. Don’t allow your lack of exposure to veterans influence your decision to not hire one. Any good cop on the beat is a cop that can communicate, among other things. We all know that those officers that struggle with communication quickly find themselves in all sorts of trouble.

Whether a veteran has combat experience or not, they were surely exposed to stress with expectations of success and nothing less. Service members are exposed to stress at levels that aren’t imaginable for those who have never served. Boot camp initiates the recruit to sleep deprivation, physical stress and mental stress and it doesn’t ease up until you retire or leave the service. Law enforcement is filled with hours of calm and moments of extreme stress. Military veterans won’t

P R I D E

CONCLUSION

The hiring process in law enforcement is a complicated balance of various elements that develop a final candidate list. I don’t believe the military veteran is a better police candidate than a college graduate nor do I think a college graduate is more qualified than a military veteran. What I can assure you is that all things being equal military veterans may be great law enforcement candidates for their ability to function as part of a team, communicate, police with maturity and perform under stress. The military veteran’s commitment to excellence was a daily ritual. These men and women of the armed forces will provide a great balance to the college educated recruits. Together, they will make great future leaders of law enforcement. Article provided by www.Police1.com Author Glenn French, a retired Sergeant with the Sterling Heights (Mich.) How To Prepare for A Technology Career by B.E. Conrad

he technology sector has been going strong, and that growth is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Advances in artificial technology and the changes the future will bring mean there will be more need for highly skilled workers than ever before. For young people, the training for this technological future often focuses on high school and college courses. Education in science, technology, engineering and math, the so-called STEM fields, is increasingly popular, but what if you are too old for school and already ensconced in your career? If you are already in the workforce, but looking for a fresh new challenge, transitioning to tech could be a smart move. There are many ways to gain the skills you will need for a successful transition, and there are many valid paths to success. Here are some tips for transitioning into a great new tech career.

Consider a Combination Position

Not all tech careers are the same, and the skills needed vary widely from position to position. If you are working in a nontech position and looking for a new challenge, why not consider a combination or crossover position? Some career paths, including positions like business

Positions available in various professional and technical fields:

Civil Engineering Communications Contract Administration Finance/Accounting Geographical Information Systems

Human Resources Heavy Equip. Operators Maintenance Planning/Research Project Management Transportation Techs

analysts and quality assurance technician, use a combination of technical and non-technical skills to get the job done. If you have great people skills and an eye for detail, adding some technological training could help you qualify for a great new crossover career.

Highlight Your Past Achievements

It can be hard for an employer to take a chance on an unproven worker, especially with positions as critical as the IT staff or network support. Even if you are already with the company, the boss may view you as an unproven entity in your proposed technological career.

Ask for a Probationary Period

When you are transitioning to a new tech career, the only thing you can hope for is a chance to prove yourself. The abilities you have demonstrated may get you in the door, but you will still need to prove you can do the job. If your employer is still uncertain about the tech transition you are proposing, try asking for a probationary period. This testing period will allow you to prove what you can do and showcase what you have to offer. Article provided by www.Constant-Content.com

3 Tips for Women Interested in Government Careers by Lindy Kyzer

Talent management is a critical part of the government’s job. Critical missions, including national security missions, require qualified professionals to do the work, and the federal government faces the same challenges as the commercial sector in attracting and retaining the right workers. Attracting diverse workers into national security and intelligence community careers poses additional challenges, and it’s one of the reason the intelligence community, in particular, works hard to provide reporting on both the numbers and the growth in diverse employees within the intelligence community, including women.

I

t’s no surprise that the very application process itself can frequently be a barrier to entry. The next struggle is to retain those same workers after they’ve been hired. Whether you’re considering a government career or barreling deep into the application process, here are three tips for women pursuing government careers.

1. FIND A MENTOR

The COVID-19 environment may seem like a barrier to this process, but it can actually make it easier than ever. When someone knows they’re committing to a phone call or video chat, it may be easier to get a higher-level person to say ‘yes’ to your ask for an informational interview. And many organizations are going virtual with networking events which often even include break-out sessions or one-on-one chat options. And don’t forget that a recruiter should be one of the people in your career network – they can advise you on your resume and aspects of the job market you may not consider.

2. DON’T BE AFRAID OF GAPS

There was a time when women were judged for any career gaps, but those times are over. Both men and women are showing you don’t always have to ‘lean in’ to get ahead in the workplace – sometimes it’s okay to lean-out, build a new skillset, or do something you need to do to take care of your family, and then re-enter the workforce later. Federal employers are making on and off ramping part of their retention strategies.

3. C ONSIDER NON-TRADITIONAL OPTIONS

USAJobs isn’t the only path to a federal government career. Government jobs can be found on ClearanceJobs.com, along with contract positions which can sometimes lead to government positions if the applicant is interested. Fellowships and internships are another path to a government job. In contrast to the private sector where internships are often the purview of the college student or young, federal government fellows or interns frequently come into the position with some years of experience. If the internship leads to the agency or position of your dreams, it may be worth it. The government wants (and needs) great women to keep it running. With women taking the highest ranks of some of national security’s top agencies and organizations, now is a great time for women to look to the possible, and start their government career journey. Turning Your Healthcare Dream Job into A Reality Living The Dream: Enjoying A Successful Career As A Healthcare Provider

Congratulations on landing your dream job! You’ve done a lot of work to get here. So far, you have: • Dedicated countless hours of your life to studying, training and sharpening your skills • Passed your exams and obtained your license and certifications • Identified your wants and needs in a dream job • Crafted a winning resume/CV and cover letter • Leveraged your network and resources to find opportunities • Interviewed, negotiated and signed on the dotted line • Landed your dream job!

That’s huge. However, there’s still work to be done to turn your dream into reality. But this is the fun part – the reason you’re here. Now is when your hard work and dedication truly pay off.

How To Make Your Dream Job A Reality Here are several actions you can take to capitalize on your calling and live out your dream as a successful healthcare provider. 1. Consider what traits you’ll bring to your practice each day. Think about shifting into provider mode as you put on your white coat, stethoscope, uniform or badge. Get clear and centered as you head into work. Remind yourself of your strengths and get psyched up with strategies like using a pre-performance ritual, building a performance playlist, and fighting back against fight or flight (McGinn ). 2. Take action to protect yourself from burnout. The American Medical Association advises providers to “Identify and prioritize your

Physicians cited in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology advise new providers to “wear good shoes, have your own doctor, speak up for yourself, and develop a self-care ritual”(ACOG ). 3. Immerse yourself in the science of medicine and your specialty. Keep up with innovations in methods, procedures, treatment, medications, and equipment. Select CME opportunities thoughtfully to build your knowledge base and skill set. Continually ask yourself, “Where am I going? How am I getting on? Where to next?” Also, “keep a learning portfolio and…keep your learning efforts alive by discussing them with your peers and supervisors” ( BMJ). 4. To connect with patients, Zulman et al. recommend providers “prepare with intention, listen intently and completely, agree on what matters most, connect with the patient’s story, and explore emotional cues” ( JAMA). 5. Bond with the team. Research shows collaboration in healthcare improves patient outcomes, decreases morbidity and mortality, reduces additional work, and increases provider job satisfaction (CPJRPC ). To set yourself up for success, “build a budget and savings plan, create a loan repayment strategy, fund retirement accounts, protect yourself with the right insurance, and consider your financial future” ( NEJM). 7. Look to the future. This is your dream job now, but where do you imagine you’ll want to go in the future? Are you interested in climbing the leadership ladder? Do you want to become a leading expert in your specialty or subspecialize? Do you want to invent new medical devices or develop breakthrough procedures? Top Recruiting Strategies to Improve Diversity at Your Organization

November 2023 The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reports that in 2018, among active physicians:

In addition to physicians, there is a lack of diversity among other healthcare roles.

According to 2021 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) findings, the most significant lack of racial and ethnic diversity is among: • Advanced practice nurses

Much work must be done to improve racial, ethnic and gender diversity among physicians.

Greater Diversity Can Lead to Improved Health Outcomes Employing a more diverse workforce can lead to industry-wide improvements, among them: • A more robust pool of candidates and improved retention of employees – Association of preoperative Registered Nurses (AORN) reports, “Investing in diverse talent, and demonstrating your commitment to do so, can attract more candidates. Implementing diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) training can build trust and morale among staff, improving retention rates.” • Better health outcomes among patients – The AHRQ 2021 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report says, “Lack of racial, ethnic, and gender concordance between providers and patients can lead to miscommunication, stereotyping, and stigma, and, ultimately, suboptimal healthcare…A racially and ethnically diverse health workforce has been shown to promote better access and healthcare for under-served populations and to better meet the health needs of an increasingly diverse population.”

The job description should also include any relevant details about opportunities to work with diverse, underrepresented or under-served patient populations (Emory Department of Medicine). Embrace diversity within your organization and integrate diversity into your branding. Organizations with a culture that embraces diversity are more likely to attract diverse candidates.
