Sometimes, especially if I am having a bad day, I like to remind myself that regardless of the way MY day is going, there is someone somewhere who is most likely having a day worse than mine. Thinking like this tends to help me count my blessings and stay grateful for all the positive things in my life.

The most positive things in my life seem to come from my connection with other people. The pandemic clearly made the use of facetime, phone calls and texts more important, but now that COVID is lessing its grip on our social outings, it's important to me to be in the same room as friends and family as often as possible.

I believe our connection to other people is what life is about, overall. Initially we are connected to our parents, and then perhaps siblings, friends at school, teachers, partners, our partner's family, our community, our children, and so on.

These connections shape us; help us become who we are, build our character. It is so important to appreciate and maintain them.

My day can be made or broken by the connections I make or don't make that day. Today was a great day. I got to have lunch with my mom.

Feeling Valued as a Woman in Tech

and

Ofwomen in tech, one in four don’t feel valued at work , according to a study sponsored by ARRIS Composites of 1,000 workers in America.

With the COVID-19 pandemic changing the way many of us work, remote and hybrid schedules have offered more freedom and more uncertainty for many U.S. tech workers. Competitive company culture helps drive talented people to hard-to-fill tech jobs regardless of gender, but what exactly are employees looking for?

What Do Women in Tech Look for in Their Workplace?

Businesses need to see gender diversity as a business problem , not only a social problem, Gartner noted in 2022. Women in tech want to be heard rather than talked over. Gartner added that pay equity is also key, with women being paid less on average than men in tech and quitting their jobs at more than twice the rate.

Organizations that want to successfully retain women should consider advocacy and networking groups.

Page 4 equal opportunity employment journal May 2023
Making employees feel valued is about company culture and work-life balance, a survey found. Remote work
diverse recruitment efforts can make a difference.

“We know how important it is for younger women to see that progression is possible,” said Christie Struckman, vice president analyst at Gartner. “Let them see you and feel your impact by being a vocal champion of making change happen in your organization.”

It’s important to focus not just on recruitment but on retention and “a pipeline view of the lifecycle of female employees in their workplace,” she said. Women also see bias in promotion, with 40% noting it.

“Women at mid-level positions value compensation, vacation, location, a collegial work environment and work/life balance,” Struckman told TechRepublic. “That list changes at the senior level where women value ethics and integrity, product and service quality, and innovative work. What both levels feel is missing is manager quality and respect.”

Wins for Women in Tech

About 26% of surveyed Americans overall are unhappy with their jobs, ARRIS found. While women and men face some different challenges in company culture, one in five men also report not feeling valued at their current workplace. Of those surveyed, 40% say they plan to look for a new job in 2023.

Women’s share in the technology industry grew 6.9% from 2019 to 2022, according to a Deloitte report ; “share” in its methodology refers to the percentage of the overall workforce at large technology companies — i.e., those with an average of more than 100,000 workers.

Deloitte’s analysis and predictions found that 32.9% of the technology workforce were women in 2022, many of them in technical and leadership roles. In the technology, media and telecommunications industry in North America, 25% of board seats were held by women in the 2022 projections, Deloitte said.

Challenges for Women in Tech

Hiring women in high-profile technology companies can be challenging because they may lack a network of similar people to model, regardless of whether the workplace is a safe and enjoyable environment. Common “pipeline problems” include pay gaps, limited opportunities for promotion, a hostile or sexist workplace culture, or a lack of childcare. A woman who sees she is the only one on her team might feel lonely or pressured.

A 2022 study found that 44% of women working in tech in the U.S. have seen an increase in workplace sexual harassment over the last five years.

“Team members that confront those behaviors show that women are seen, heard and valued,” Struckman said.

In order to remove these barriers, organizations should have a diversity, equity and inclusion strategy that puts conscious, measurable progress markers in place for ensuring women, particularly women of color, feel accepted at work.

Companies should also change up the career pipeline by embracing apprenticeships and career-switching hires. “Returnships” can provide a training on-ramp to women returning to the workforce from a long time away raising children or exploring a different career. Mentorship programs and development opportunities can be beneficial too.

A different perspective pushes back on the idea of a pipeline challenge. Nonprofit advocacy group NPower says women — particularly women of color — already present in customer service roles have skills in customer relationship management software and digital productivity tools, which could translate to

May 2023 equal opportunity employment journal Page 5

higher-paying careers in tech. Women of color make up only 5% of the workforce in tech jobs in 2022, according to NPower.

“When the tech industry reaches parity with the skillssimilar talent pool, we will know that our investments in equitable recruitment, hiring, training and onboarding have been successful,” NPower wrote.

What Company Culture Do Employees Want?

The rest of the survey concerned quality of life at work in general, regardless of gender. The top factor in defining an ideal working situation is a competitive salary, with 61% listing it as what they value most in a job. The ability to work from home follows it, with 39% listing it as what they value the most. From there, the survey respondents listed health insurance (38%), benefits (38%), and PTO and vacation time (36%).

The survey by ARRIS Composites notes several common desires among all people currently in the workforce, regardless of gender. A plurality of respondents (44%) want fully remote

jobs, citing better flexibility and an easier time balancing their work and

days are top priorities.

home life. Many employees who work from home say it’s easier to get things done and meet deadlines in their home environment.

However, management doesn’t quite trust at-home work. 64% of executives and managers believe in-office workers are higher performers than remote workers, and 76% believe in-office workers are more likely to be promoted than remote workers, Gartner found.

Of those surveyed, 73% said they believe they would perform better at an organization with a better company culture, and 67% believe their company could do more to improve its culture. Having supportive managers and flexibility with time off requests and sick

With 24% of people surveyed planning to look for a new job, they’ll take their priorities into that potential search. Many people (69%) say they set stricter work-life boundaries for themselves now than they did two years ago and will take that expectation into their assessments of future jobs. Meeting employees where they are helps increase recruitment, especially among underrepresented groups.

Gartner reports that employed women are most likely to notice a negative company culture when receiving peer recognition (43%) and during performance reviews (41%).

“Leaning into these moments and making sure they are done equitably and fairly is what matters,” Struckman said. Top Reasons to Work in Manufacturing

When starting your career or making a job change, what are the important factors you consider before accepting an offer? You probably look at the company culture to see if the mission, values, and people are a good fit for you. You think about long-term growth and advancement opportunities and want peace of mind knowing your job is stable and secure. Oh, and don’t forget about the pay and benefits! We all want to get paid fairly, have good health insurance, and paid time off, right?

If those are all boxes you want to check off, you should consider working in the manufacturing industry.

The engaging work, family-like team atmosphere, education and training opportunities, a large variety of jobs and career paths, and competitive salary are just a few of the factors that make working in manufacturing a rewarding choice.

It’s no secret that the U.S. as a whole is currently experiencing a labor shortage and jobs are in demand. But even before this national trend, the manufacturing industry was seeing an employment gap, partially due to moving manufacturing back to the US from abroad (known as “reshoring”), but also due to the retirement of older workers. And new job opportunities are constantly being created, making this industry a high-demand one.

Between the high demand, skills needed, and nature of the job, working in the manufacturing industry comes with rewards: an average salary between $37,000 and $63,000 , health insurance (including dental and vision), retirement funds, paid time off, career development and educational

opportunities, and more. Of course, these all vary by location and employer, but these are some of the benefits typical of the industry.

At Buck Company , we provide our employees with a competitive salary, paid vacation, a 401(K) plan, health benefits, and much more.

Career opportunities are readily and steadily available.

When you work in manufacturing, multiple career opportunities, paths, and advancements are available to you. If you’re just entering the workforce or looking to make a career change, a wide variety of entry-level positions exist, including apprenticeships, to give you on-the-job training.

Apprenticeships and on-the-job training afford you the opportunity to avoid incurring, long-lasting student debt. That means more money in your pocket at the end of the day so you can build your savings (including that retirement plan) faster, while still obtaining the knowledge and skills you need to advance your manufacturing career. A little more money in your

pocket probably also means a little more shopping too. Don’t feel guilty for spending some of that extra money. You’re contributing to our economy and its growth, and that’s a good thing! There’s a plethora of positions and opportunities in manufacturing that range from maintenance, production, inventory, technology, engineering, drafting, and more! The variety means you can move across departments; where you start doesn’t have to be where you stay. You might start in production but realize that you’re interested in inventory. You can take your background knowledge with you as you shift into a new role and become skilled in that area too. Having that cross-functional experience makes you a more valuable team member.

You have job security and stability.

Remember how we shared up above that manufacturing is an in-demand job? Well, that demand also means there’s job security and stability. Also contributing to the security and stability is the nature of manufacturing. When so many industries and jobs were forced to shut down during COVID-19, manufacturing

remained open, having been classified as essential. It makes sense when you think about it, people still needed parts for cars, medical equipment, technology needs increased, and food and clothing were still necessary. You can have peace of mind knowing your job isn’t going anywhere.

Manufacturing itself is an industry, but it’s also used in many different industries, opening up a wide net of possibilities for you to match your personal interests to your job and further enhance your job stability. Like food (let’s be honest, who doesn’t like food)? You can go to work building the next innovation in food processing or preservation. Interested in cars? Good news, automotive manufacturing needs you! Prefer to work with your hands? Consider a position in production or fabrication ; you’ll literally take raw materials and work them into something that didn’t exist before you created it!

Manufacturing is a constantly evolving

Page 8 equal opportunity employment journal May 2023 2023
You can be among the first to experience cutting-edge, new technologies.

industry. New technologies are routinely introduced to make productivity, quality, and safety more effective and efficient. And you could be at the forefront of that technology. Who wouldn’t want to be among the first to play with the latest and greatest versions of 3D printing , robotics, analytics, IoT , and more? Not only is it exciting and interesting, but working with cutting-edge technology further develops your skills, knowledge, and advancement opportunities.

The majority of people spend more time each week at work than they do with their families, at home, or doing leisure activities/hobbies. If you’re spending all that time in one place, you want to enjoy it, right? A manufacturing career provides you with a positive workplace experience and a high level of work satisfaction.

You

get to make something real and make a difference to others.

When you work in manufacturing, you get to see the fruits of your labor and its impact. You create something real that can be held, used, and enjoyed. Your work contributes to everyday life. Depending on what you do, you might be making things that are used in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or electronics, and those things help others. That’s something you can take pride in, knowing your work impacted another person’s life.

You’ll have a positive workplace experience.

Upon your first day of work, you’ll realize that you aren’t just joining a team, but a family full of great people You’ll work alongside people with similar go-getter, competitive attitudes, who want to collaborate and elevate ideas and projects, and you’ll learn from each other as you share your knowledge, ideas, passions, and talent.

As in any job, you’ll face challenges. But as you strive to overcome each challenge, you’ll grow, you’ll learn, you’ll improve, and in the end, the challenge will bring out the best in you. The same can be said about your coworkers, and as you all work to be the best, you’ll surpass the goals and expectations set by your company, and you’ll be recognized and rewarded for it.

Safety and security are of utmost importance in manufacturing , between

the manual labor you perform and the equipment, chemicals, tools, and other people out on the floor that can be hazardous. Companies take their employees’ health and safety seriously, routinely performing checks, updating policies and procedures, undergoing training, and more. You can go into work each day knowing you’re being looked out for and safety is top of mind.

Another positive of manufacturing work? It keeps you active and fit! No need to worry about hitting the gym after work; you’ve been working out basically all day!

Next Steps

As you can see, there are many benefits to working in manufacturing. Yes, the pay and incentives are nice, but that’s only part of it. The work environment, company culture, commitment to success and continued innovation, personal growth, career growth, and rewarding nature of the job are really what make working in manufacturing so worthwhile. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to get your manufacturing career started.

Gender Equality: Lessons We Need to Learn from Iceland

Let’s have a look at the Iceland of gender equality.

Every year, the World Economic Forum publishes the Global Gender Gap Report. For 10 years, Iceland has been ranked first in the report in terms of gender equality. This small country in the north seems to have found the key to a fairer life.

Iceland Forbids Unequal Pay Between Men and Women

With the lowest gender pay gap in the world, Iceland has been the leading force in gender equality since 10 years. 97 percent of men take parental leave and Children already learn at school what real equality means. This is, among other things, the result of an active women’s movement that organized a women’s strike in which 90 percent of Icelandic women participated.

Since January 2018, a new law forbids companies to pay women and men with similar jobs unequally. Iceland became the first country in the world to make it illegal to pay men more than women. Companies with more than 25 employees have to prove that their male and female employees get equal pay for equal work: As a result, the gender pay gap in similar jobs in Iceland is just 5 percent.

The Fight for Gender Equality is Not Over Yet

However, for Iceland, this is not enough: By 2022, the difference between men’s and women’s incomes is set to disappear completely. In general the gender pay gap is still at 16%. Professions dominated by women are paid less in Iceland as well. To fight this, the trade union started a campaign and will not stop the fight for gender equality: “Because if we stop, the gender difference will increase again,” says union president Ragnar Thor Ingolfsson.

Men Have to Go on Parental Leave, too

However, Iceland’s equality policy starts much earlier. In other countries women often line up at the glass ceiling and cannot reach the same top positions as men do. When it comes to young women, the salary curve makes a significant downward turn – often in connection with the birth of a child.

The Icelandic government did not want to accept that women would be stuck with childcare while men were pursuing careers. It reformed the parental leave system. Icelandic parents are entitled to nine months’ leave, during which time they receive 80% of their salary. Three months of this have to be used by one parent, three months by the other. The rest of the time can be split between the parents themselves.

Real Flexibility

However, parental leave can also be arranged flexibly: Icelanders can combine it with part-time work or share childcare hours flexibly with their partner. If they want, they can work for one week and consume one week of their parental leave in the following week. In principle, any combination is possible as long as employees and employers agree on it. Iceland’s fathers spend almost as much time with their children as their mothers. This is also possible because they are entitled to additional 14 days of paid leave when a child is born.

What Is a Career in Government Like?

Inaddition to spanning virtually all professional fields, government careers offer great benefits and allow people to make an impact in their communities.

The government relies on millions of employees to provide services to the public, care for veterans, deliver the mail, and keep the government running. These public sector employees benefit from clear pay structures, strong benefits programs, and opportunities for career advancement.

Many government employers offer similar career paths as private sector employers, but with more benefits. For example, accountants and auditors working in government often receive more vacation time than their private sector counterparts and they qualify for pensions. By contrast, however, private sector companies can often pay higher salaries. In-demand government industries also include law enforcement, civil engineering, education, and healthcare.

Public sector employees work in a variety of positions at the federal, state, and local levels. This article explores the advantages of public

sector employment and the best ways to launch a career in government.

What Is a Career in Government Like?

At the federal, state, and local levels, public sector employees keep the government running.

Jobs in the U.S. government include political careers working for the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of the federal government. At the federal level, government employees can work for the military, the post office, federal law enforcement agencies, and other federal agencies and departments. State and local governments also employ specialists in areas like education, taxation, public works, and civil service.

Thanks to the wide range of jobs available in government, people interested in civil service jobs can find opportunities in a variety of fields. For example, engineers can design public infrastructure and aerospace technology, while healthcare professionals care for veterans.

This is even true within government branches. Take, for example, the thousands of employees who work in the legislative branch. These employees research policies, conduct budget assessments, and draft bills. During legislative sessions, they help elected officials prepare for hearings. Legislative careers also exist at the state level: The National Conference of State Legislatures provides a list of job openings

In some government positions, election cycles can affect career growth. For example, new top-level elected officials might change policies that affect ground-level government employees, sometimes even moving or eliminating their departments. But for the majority of jobs in government, elections play little role in daily tasks and career progression.

While many upper-level federal employees work in the greater Washington, D.C. area, they can also work across the country. Many federal organizations, like the Social Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Administration, Bureau of the Census, and Agricultural Research Service, have offices outside of Washington, D.C. For example, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) employs more people outside of D.C. than inside it.

State and local governments also hire employees in every state and county in the country. Understanding how the U.S. government works can help prospective government employees find job opportunities.

For example, again consider VHA , which is part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VHA operates 1,255 healthcare facilities across the country, including medical centers and outpatient care sites. These facilities make up the country’s largest integrated healthcare system, employing 322,000 healthcare professionals and staff

The physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses who work for VHA work in every state in the country. As federal workers, VHA employees can participate in loan repayment and tuition reimbursement programs. VHA also hires information technology, mental health, and healthcare administration professionals.

of public sector employees who work in government are not elected or affiliated with anybody who is elected. Meanwhile, elected officials, campaign staff, and political appointees work in politics.

Government jobs include the day-to-day jobs that keep the country running, like government accountants, judges, mail carriers, and law enforcement officers. Military careers also fall under government jobs.

While jobs in politics typically involve declaring a political party and potentially campaigning for power, government careers follow more traditional professional arcs, with candidates starting at entry-level and working up as they gain experience. Jobs in government include roles in the military, engineering, healthcare, education, the criminal justice system, accounting, foreign policy, and law. As a result, many more jobs exist in government than in politics: 3,867,028 government jobs at the state level alone, and 7-9 million federal government employees .

Careers in government offer many perks. Public sector employees benefit from competitive pay and strong benefits, including subsidized medical and dental insurance. Government jobs also offer retirement pensions, unlike many private sector jobs, and government workers can also qualify for public service loan forgiveness programs. Finally, with millions of jobs in government, prospective public sector employees can usually find opportunities in their field and location.

Entry-Level Jobs in Government

Government departments and agencies hire entry-level professionals for careers in diverse fields. For instance, the

Air Force hires mechanical engineers to design planes, while VA hospitals rely on nurse practitioners to care for patients. Public sector employees can also work in law enforcement or in legislative roles, where they craft and implement public policy. Prospective government employees can research federal agencies or visit USAJOBS.gov to learn more about specific opportunities. Keep in mind that many government jobs use the same title across agencies, and that the agency you work for can matter more than your job title. The following list introduces some of the diverse job opportunities available in the government.

TOP 10 IN-DEMAND HEALTHCARE CAREERS

Have you realized that the youngest of baby boomers are now in their 50’s? As these folks seek services in prevention or treatment, the need for employees in the field of healthcare will obviously increase. Not only are we seeing a greater need for healthcare professionals due to the aging population, we also had 7.3 million Americans enter the healthcare system in 2014 under Obamacare. We can expect those numbers to continuously increase as more uninsured Americans sign up for coverage.

If you look at the U.S. Labor Department of Statistics you will notice the percentages of projected employment growth are all in double digits across the board. 1. Optometrist

Read the top line. Now the next line. Can you read the smallest line? Are you reading it with glasses, or your own naked eye? If you’re reading with glasses, odds are, you’ve met an optometrist. (You might have met an ophthalmologist, which is a medical doctor who treats eyes; an optometrist is Doctor of Optometry, specializing in corrective lenses, not medicine.) Optometrists check vision, prescribe lenses, and sometimes

2. Registered Nurse

Registered Nurse hits that sweet spot where schooling, pay, and responsibility balance out. You can become a registered nurse with an associate’s degree and a license, in only two or three years, and pay is high for such a low level of schooling. You spend a lot of time directly with patients, assessing their well-being, keeping them comfortable, and doing all of the many tasks that come up (medicines, needles, monitors, and bandages). You can specialize in areas such as pediatric, emergency, intensive care, and labor/delivery, or you can work as a school or camp nurse. Some nurses choose lucrative traveling positions.

It’s not a cushy job – you’ll be on your feet a lot, and during your shifts, stress can get pretty high. You’re responsible for people’s lives, after all. But there is no shortage of work for good nurses, and the more experience you get, the more indemand you’ll be, and the higher pay you can negotiate for.

3. Respiratory Therapist

Take a deep breath. Appreciate that? What if you couldn’t do it? For millions of Americans, breathing is a daily struggle. Whether from asthma, COPD, emphysema, or any number of other disorders, difficulty breathing calls for a specialist who can help relieve symptoms, do therapy to strengthen the lungs, and practice preventative care. That specialist is a Respiratory Therapist.

4. Hospital Administrator

An exploding medical sector means an unprecedented demand for Hospital Administrators. These are the people who keep the hospital in compliance with regulations, financially stable, staffed, and housed. They may not have direct contact with patients, but they make sure the hospital is there, and that qualified people are on call to take care of the sick and injured. This is a job with significant responsibilities; whether it’s forprofit or non-profit, a hospital is an expensive operation, and the administrators are the ones who make sure the hospital is making money and staying afloat. Anything that goes wrong is on the heads of the administrators, so they often have to talk to the press and be available during emergency situations. And for that responsibility, they’re very well-paid. A Master’s of Business Administration is recommended, though some administrators are going for Public Health, and even Doctor of Public Health degrees.

5. Biomedical Engineer

Part of the excitement of working in medicine is using all of the amazing machines, tools, and gadgets that are being developed every day to heal people. Obviously, those incredible inventions don’t design themselves – that’s what Biomedical Engineers are for. Any innovation that has transformed some aspect of medicine in recent years, from brain-controlled prosthetics to imaging machines that can show the hair on a growing fetus, started out in a biomedical research and development facility.

If you like the idea of working in a lab, creating things that will improve and save lives, consider biomedical engineering. You only need a bachelor’s degree to get started, and pay is excellent for the education level.

Can you get past the fact you will be poking around in stranger’s mouths all day long? If so, you’re golden. You clean some teeth, examine for gingivitis and other oral diseases, maybe you do some sealant work and assist with fillings, round it out with patient education and you’ve got your shift in a nutshell.

A Dental Hygienist works for a team with Dentists and Dental Assistants. So for obvious reasons, you need to have excellent social and communication skills. Hygienist are paid very well given the fact that only a 2 year degree is the required amount of schooling for this position.

7. Dermatologist

Who loves their skin? Really, sees no flaws and has no qualms?

That’s why dermatologists will always have a job. But it’s not all smoothing wrinkles and removing unsightly moles. Dermatologists treat life-threatening skin cancers, correct disfiguring scars and damage, sooth painful skin conditions that make life miserable, and help patients learn good preventative habits to avoid future suffering.

You’ll have to do a lot of schooling first – a dermatologist is a medical doctor, not just a simple certification. But you’ll have no trouble paying back your student loans, either. Median income is up around $300,000, and in California, where good skin goes on your resume, it can be even higher. Makes you wonder why you’re not a dermatologist already, doesn’t it?

8. Chiropractor

Chiropractors diagnose and treat disorders of the spine, along with all the muscles and nerves that go with it. To the layman, that means a lot of stretching and joint-cracking. As a chiropractor, you do a little of everything; a session may require working with computer imaging, doing some therapeutic massage, and stretching patients on equipment that looks kind of medieval. You can’t be afraid to try some unconventional treatments, because every patient’s pain is different.

If you want to go into a medical profession, but you’re kind of a lone wolf, chiropractic might be a good choice. Most chiropractors work in private practice. But that, of course, means you have to wear a lot of hats, so it wouldn’t hurt to have some skills in business and marketing in addition to your medical degree. Take a video course and you can even shoot your own late-night local TV commercial.

Podiatrist

Frankly, the human foot is a disaster. It just can’t handle all we put it through, with all our running around, on hard floors and sidewalks, in poorly-designed shoes. Not to mention all the weight we keep putting on them. It’s a wonder they hold up as well as they do. But pretty much everyone experiences foot pain or illness at some time in their lives. The Podiatrist is the one who treats that pain and illness, whether it’s as simple as warts and bunions, or as complex as diabetic feet or deformities like club foot.

Those Baby Boomers, patron saints of the medical field, just insist on staying active as they age, and that’s a very good thing for podiatrists. Every woman in her 60s whose heel spurs keep her from training for a marathon needs a podiatrist. Every man of a certain age who breaks his ankle rollerblading needs one. So it’s no wonder the profession is growing steadily, or that it pays so well. Anything to keep us on our feet.

10. Physician Assistant

If you’ve ever been to an urgent care center, you’ve seen a Physician Assistant. You may not have even realized that he or she was not technically a doctor, because PAs are trained to do virtually everything a doctor does – perform exams, diagnose illnesses, even write prescriptions. They have some limitations;

they can only assist in surgery, not perform it, for instance. But for your day-to-day sickness or injuries, a Physician Assistant can do it all.

When you become a PA, you can work in any speciality a doctor can, from neonatal to geriatric. You’ll answer to a medical doctor as part of a team, but the responsibility will be yours. Plus, it’s only a master’s degree, which means you’ll get there much faster and with a lot less student loan debt.

10 Reasons Why Employers Want to Hire Veterans, Based on Real Research

Veterans hear it all the time: Employers want to hire America’s heroes! The effort to hire veterans has ramped up exponentially. There really are hiring fairs, expert headhunters and entire human resources departments devoted to recruiting veterans for civilian companies —and it’s not because we’re all heroes.

The reason the number of veteran hiring programs skyrocketed beginning in 2012 is because Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) published a real business case for hiring veterans , written by a Ph.D. and based on 10 research-informed propositions on the value of veterans in a competitive business environment.

In 2016, that same report was later backed up by a 24page report from the IVMF on how to develop the return on investment from vet hiring programs. So while you may or may not consider yourself America’s hero, there’s an employer out there who thinks you’re at least a hot commodity. We present ten reason why.

We’re always looking for positive, talented people to help us create the best experience possible for our member-owners. As a credit union, we’re a financial cooperative that seeks to enhance lives and strengthen our community. Interested?

1. Veterans Are Entrepreneurial

“Entrepreneurial” doesn’t mean veterans necessarily want to run off and start their own businesses. It means vets tend to have the same attributes that successful business owners have: self-efficacy, need for achievement, they don’t need to be managed, are comfortable with uncertainty and make good decisions under pressure.

No one runs a business like the owner, because they have the most skin in the game. When veterans are hired as employees, they show the same qualities in their work as the owner would. They’re self-sufficient, trustworthy and work toward the good of the business. These same qualities are the reason veterans are twice as likely to start businesses than non-veterans.

2. Veterans Assume High Levels of Trust

Research shows trust is a significant predictor of highperforming teams, both in and out of the military. Integrity is a value instilled in service members from the start. Almost every branch of the military mentions integrity in their creed, core values or elsewhere, so it’s no wonder that IVMF research shows military service engendered trust.

Veterans are not only trustworthy to co-workers and managers; the trust they build between themselves, co-workers and managers also spreads between teams and into the whole organization. The result is a high-performance culture.

3. Veterans Are Adept at Transferring Skills Across Contexts and Tasks

The first casualty of war is the plan. In the military, troops learn to make do with what they have, wherever they are. Military members are trained to deal with situations when the plan goes awry. In response, military personnel will reorient their skills to deal with the evolving situation. Military planners might call it “contingency operations,” but for the individual, the ability to recognize and transfer skills to a different context or an evolving situation is a valuable skill. Employers want people with the ability to use training in an unfamiliar environment or task with little or no oversight, and chances are good veterans have been doing this for their entire careers.

4. Veterans Acquire and Leverage Advanced Technical Training

Every Marine may be a rifleman, but they also have some kind of advanced technical training. Though the rest of the branches don’t have the same rifleman ethos, every service member who joins the military is either trained in a technological career field or is exposed to advanced technology at some point in their career. This means veterans are adept at working with new and emerging technologies, learning to use them proficiently and can transfer the skills they acquire to new areas of expertise,

even if those areas are disparate from their original training. The wide experience gained in using tech in the military puts vets ahead of non-veterans in their age groups.

5. Veterans Are Comfortable and Adept in Discontinuous Environments

Many veterans employees pride themselves on their ability to thrive in chaos, and the research backs that up. Military experience positively correlates to the cognitive ability to evaluate an evolving situation or environment and act effectively in the face of uncertainty.

Businesses, especially those in information and technology sectors, are constantly changing and evolving, and they’re looking for future employees who can work efficiently and effectively in these kinds of environments.

6. Veterans Exhibit High Levels of Resiliency

Resiliency is successful adaptation, even in the face of adversity, hardship and trauma, to new and changing situations. It is also developing competencies in those situations that allow an individual to excel. It means bouncing back from failures, either personal or professional, and veterans overwhelmingly exhibit resiliency in their everyday lives.

Studies have shown veteran resiliency is the result of their military experience, enhancing their abilities to adapt and grow from failures more quickly and completely than those who did not serve in the military.

The professional team members at Benefis

The military is a team, composed of smaller teams, all working together toward goals that make up the military’s missions. Being in the military not only makes its members believe they can serve effectively as a team member, it enables high performance as part of that team. Military service specifically enhances individuals in three key ways:

• Organizing and defining team goals and missions

• Defining team member roles and responsibilities

• Developing a team’s plan for action

7. Veterans Exhibit Advanced Team-Building Skills.
A business with a lot of veterans will experience lower turnover and attrition rates and produce higher quality work.

8. Veterans Show Strong Organizational Commitment

A surprising feature of any strong social group is that the identity of its key members becomes intertwined with the identity of the organization. Military branches are particularly adept at this kind of institutional socialization, and as a result, veterans can bring this strong organizational commitment and loyalty to a civilian workplace.

A business with a lot of veterans will experience lower turnover and attrition rates and produce higher quality work, because the organization’s customs and standards are more easily adopted throughout the business.

9. Veterans Have and Leverage Cross-Cultural Experiences.

Increased globalization in world economies means that individual employees in world-class businesses and corporations need to accept and operate in multicultural areas and transcend international boundaries. Studies show military members and veterans have had experience in three important multicultural

areas, compared to non-veterans in their peer groups.

• Veterans have more international experience

• Vets speak more languages, more fluently

• Veterans have a higher understanding of cultural sensitivity

10. Veterans Have Experience and Skill in Diverse Work Settings

The military may be criticized for a lack of diversity at times, but the research shows that America’s all-volunteer military is actually a diverse workforce across a number of important demographics, which include education, ethnicity, culture, values and individual goals and aspirations.

This experience means veterans entering the civilian workforce are more accepting of co-workers’ differences in the workplace, especially in interpersonal relationships. Veterans also exhibit a high degree of cultural sensitivity.

4 Signs You Should Pursue A Career in Law Enforcement

Not all jobs let you live and work in service, but the few that do are often the most fulfilling. If you’re considering a career in law enforcement, you’re likely deeply committed to justice and protecting the people and systems that uphold law and order in our society. As you begin to consider your future—and the online programs that can help get you there—it could be time to consider a career in law enforcement, how to get there, and where it can take you.

1. You’re invested in your community and the public safety of the people in it

A career in law enforcement is a future in the service of others. It’s a commitment to justice and serving the greater good. It’s a vow to protect those around you and to gain the skills, law enforcement training, and expertise to effectively do that. Day in and day out, communities trust law enforcement officers to help maintain the law, fight crime, and protect the ideals of justice that this country was founded upon. While law

enforcement jobs can often be stressful and potentially dangerous, they’re also incredibly rewarding because they touch so many lives.

Many people who work in law enforcement are able to leverage their natural skills in communication, empathy, and awareness to protect their communities. That, coupled with training they gain through a criminal justice or other degree program, can prepare them for careers from police officers to detectives, prosecutors, agents, administrators, and beyond.

2. You’re interested in working for certain law enforcement agencies

Types of law enforcement agencies can vary quite a bit, each with their own focus and jurisdiction. It may be helpful to decide at what level you’d like to work as you begin to chart your career in law enforcement. While some people are most interested in helping their immediate community or

county, others would prefer to work with a broader audience at the state or federal level. Examples of federal agencies, which you may be familiar with, include: United States Department of State: The U.S. State Department manages American diplomacy, advocacy, and safety on an international stage. Law enforcement jobs within this agency include diplomatic security and various agent positions involved in the protection of Americans abroad.

United States Department of Justice: The DOJ handles law enforcement at the federal level – this includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the United States Marshal Service, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

On the state level, you can work in law enforcement by joining your state’s police force, highway patrol, or patrol officers. Even more locally, opportunities may exist in private security, as a detective, or sheriffs.

Department of Homeland Security: DHS is home to many of the best-known federal law enforcement agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), United States Secret Service (USSS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

On the state level, you can work in law enforcement by joining your state’s police force, highway patrol, or patrol officers. Even more locally, opportunities may exist in private security, as a detective, or sheriffs.

3. You’re interested in any of the following careers:

Studying crimes and the systems in place to prevent them can lead you down a number of career paths. Some law enforcement careers (like paralegals and prosecutors) are more focused on upholding the law; others (like police officers or probation officers) are focused on reacting to those who break the law. There are those who work in the immediate aftermath of a crime (think crime scene investigators, detectives, and the like) and others who work in more preventative roles, like security guards.

Other potential jobs in the field include: Border Patrol Agent, CIA Agent, Corrections Officer, FBI Agent, Police Officer, State Trooper, Private Detective, Probation Officer, Crime Scene Investigator, TSA Agent, Immigration/Customs Agent, Court Bailiff, Fraud Investigator, or Emergency Dispatcher. While these careers touch every corner of the law enforcement space, they are all one piece of the puzzle when it comes to keeping our citizens and communities safe from crime, threats, and harm.

4. You already have a criminal justice or criminology degree

If you’ve studied criminal justice or criminology (or if you’re considering starting!), you’re uniquely positioned to use your background and expertise to make a difference in the field of law enforcement.

Criminal Justice, a field also available through UTEP Connect, is the study of the systems that society has built in reaction to crime. Students of this discipline learn about the many arms of the criminal justice system, how they are able to enforce laws, and how they work to prevent someone breaking them.

Criminology, however, is not quite the same. The suffix “-ology” means “the study of,” so this is the study of crime. With this type of degree, students can gain an in-depth understanding of what causes people to commit crimes, when they’re most likely to take place, and the circumstances that make crime.

Either of these degrees can help students better understand the state and psychology of crime and thus contribute to fighting it on a variety of levels throughout their careers.

If you are ready to begin your professional journey in law enforcement, consider earning the degree that can help you get started. The University of Texas at El Paso offers a competitive, 100%-online Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. Reach out and an enrollment counselor will contact you directly to address any questions you may have.

#3. Nursing Work Schedules are Extremely Diverse

As a nurse, you can work day shift or night shift. You can work full-time, part-time, or PRN (as needed). You can work weekdays or weekends. You can work a 9-5 job (Monday through Friday), or 12-hour shifts for 3-4 days per week.

I’ve worked with some nurses who would work seven 12hour shifts in a row, but then they wouldn’t have to work for the next 2 1/2 weeks. Many facilities also allow self-scheduling, which allows even more convenience and flexibility in your work scheduling.

#2. Nurses Learn Useful Skills and Knowledge

As a nurse, you’ll learn about diseases, medications, the latest technology in healthcare, and other nursing knowledge that can help you educate your patients and loved ones, and potentially even save lives.

For example, a registered nurse named Ryan Reade helped save the life of TV star Tarek El Moussa after watching the show ‘Flip or Flop.’ After noticing what appeared to be a mass on Tarek’s neck, she wrote to the show, advising him to seek medical attention. It turns out that Tarek had thyroid cancer, and he was able to seek treatment.

Nurses are heroes who use their skills and knowledge to save lives!

#1. Nurses Get to Serve Others in all Stages of Life

Most people enter the nursing profession because they genuinely love to serve others. Nurses have the incredible privilege of serving people through all stages of life—from birth to death. When a woman learns that she is pregnant, nurses are there to care for the mother and her growing baby. When a woman delivers her baby, nurses are there to witness that child’s first breath and to provide newborn care.

Likewise, when a geriatric patient draws his or her last breath, nurses are there to provide comfort and to administer the last dose of medication that the patient will ever receive.

Nurses are blessed to be able to participate in those events and to serve patients in all phases of life.

The Benefits of Inclusion and Diversity in The Classroom

It’s been a little more than 60 years since Brown vs. Board of Education, one of the most important Supreme Court cases in the history of the United States. The decision made it illegal to segregate public schools on the basis of race. That cornerstone decision of the civil rights movement has played a major role in breaking down racial barriers in the decades since. It has also enabled social scientists to study how diversity in the classroom leads to students’ increased cultural understanding, stronger critical thinking skills and enhanced creativity, which all better prepare them for adulthood.

The National Education Association reports that 2014 was

the first year in which the majority of students in American public schools represented racial and ethnic minorities. In addition, the Southern Education Foundation found that in 2013, a full 51 percent of public school children were from low-income families. While student demographics vary greatly across the country, there is no question that cultural respect and inclusion are values that matter greatly in the modern classroom. Those considering enrolling in a Doctorate in Education (EdD) program should seek out one that emphasizes the importance of inclusion and diversity in the classroom, and the benefits they can provide.

We are seeking faculty and staff who are committed to the community college mission, actively engaged in promoting diversity, and prepared to use their unique strengths to experiment and innovate in the name of student success.

The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District honors a diverse academic community and fosters equity mindedness across our institutions. As such, the District is seeking applicants who will be committed to promoting a culture of appreciation for diversity, equity, inclusivity, and social justice, and continuously examining our processes and practices through an equity lens. These qualities are imperative to achieving our district’s strategic priorities of closing achievement gaps among different student groups and fostering a work environment that promotes civility, collegiality, and trust.

Diverse schools feature differences in ethnicity, socioeconomic class, religion, reading level, athletic ability, background, gender, personality, and much more. Strong EdD programs teach educators to value the unique aspects of what makes each student different, and helps them embrace those differences in the classroom.

An in-depth research review of dozens of other studies on diversity—conducted by The Century Foundation, a New Yorkbased think tank—found that having different and divergent perspectives can create positive learning outcomes. Those outcomes, explored below, can have benefits that reflect well beyond students’ graduation and can impact their lives going forward.

Diversity Improves Cognitive Skills and Critical Thinking

The presence of diversity in the classroom allows students to consider perspectives and opinions beyond those they’ve already formed or were shaped in early life by family and friends. By presenting students with viewpoints far different from their own, it gives them the opportunity to think critically about their own beliefs and examine the world in fresh ways.

As noted by an article in Scientific American, exposure to diversity alters the way individuals think by promoting creativity and innovation, as well as decision-making and problem-solving skills. As the article summarizes, “Diversity jolts us into cognitive action in ways that homogeneity simply does not.”

Exposure to Diversity Helps Students Enter Adulthood

When students enter the professional world, they join a vast and diverse workforce. Interacting with people of all different backgrounds and mindsets can present a challenge without prior exposure to diversity, especially at a younger age. Companies are taking note of their employees’ ability to handle diversity with grace and maturity; 96 percent of major employers, according to the Century Foundation, say it is vital that employees are able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Diverse schools feature differences in ethnicity, socioeconomic class, religion, reading level, athletic ability, background, gender, personality, and much more.

Diversity Prepares Students for Citizenship

As part of the Century Foundation’s research study on diversity, the authors reviewed 27 different studies about the effects of diversity on people’s willingness to interact with and improve their local community—a concept known as civic engagement. The study found that experiences with diversity in college do lead to increased civic engagement. This indicates the more involved citizens are with their government and political landscape, and the more educated they become about government processes, the more informed decisions they can make about how they are governed. As the U.S. Department of Education notes, students’ experiences with diversity help mold them into more engaged citizens.

Diversity Promotes Creativity

At its core, creativity is all about bringing together different ideas and transforming them to make something new, unique, and personal. The more ideas and experiences people are exposed to, the more creative they can be. Indeed, Scientific American cites a study conducted by several research professors who found that groups with racial diversity significantly outperformed groups without diversity in a problem-solving scenario. In professional and nonprofessional situations that call for creativity, it is a wise choice to bring together diverse perspectives.

Discover How to Encourage Inclusivity and Diversity as an Educator

As has been discussed, diversity in the classroom has numerous positive benefits for students, but how can educators ensure their pupils are getting the most out of interacting with their diverse peers? Well-trained educators, like those with an EdD, are equipped with the tools to encourage the exchange of ideas and interpersonal understanding. No matter what level of education, elementary school teachers through college professors can all utilize the following strategies to benefit their classrooms.

Learn about Students’ Cultural Backgrounds

Classroom students aren’t the only ones who can benefit from learning about what makes them diverse. According to the NDT Resource Center, an academic source committed to nondestructive evaluation, educators should also get to know their students and what makes them unique, thereby discovering the viewpoint from which they see the world and their personal learning style. For an educator, understanding cultural diversity in the classroom is a crucial part of being able to anticipate where certain lessons might lead, or any issues that might arise between students of different backgrounds. Educators can establish a tone of inclusion, emphasizing that all perspectives are valuable.

Create a Culturally Responsive Learning Environment

An educator who properly creates a culturally responsive environment will have fostered a classroom where students become respectful and understanding of cultures different from their own. Those students are typically more willing to listen respectfully to different viewpoints, rather than mock, scorn, or fear the unfamiliar. The best way for educators to

achieve this, according to The Edvocate, is to teach students that people who do not look the same as them—or who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, follow different religious traditions, speak different languages, or have a different sexual orientation or gender identity—are still just the same as them on the inside.

Allow Students to Learn about Their Community

Learning about one’s own culture is just as important as learning about others when it comes to developing cultural understanding among students. Educators with a strong teaching background such as an EdD can facilitate projects for their students that encourage them to get to know their own history. The NDT Resource Center suggests activities such as visiting community landmarks of importance to their culture, and interviewing important members of their community. Students can then be given the opportunity to share what they discover with their classmates.

Establish a Zero-Indifference

Negative Behavior Policy

In recent years, schools have enacted zero-tolerance policies in an attempt to curb bullying, harassment, and intimidation. However, the tide is now shifting toward zero-indifference policies instead, according to GLSEN. Zero-indifference is an alternative that promotes safety in schools by consistently and firmly addressing disrespectful behavior. Unlike zerotolerance, in which a first offense results in punishments as harsh as suspension or expulsion, zero-indifference allows the teacher to use culturally insensitive moments as opportunities

for learning and understanding. The Tolerance.org project of the Southern Poverty Law Center recommends zeroindifference policies when it comes to addressing bullying and harassment, as does the Anti-Defamation League; the American Civil Liberties Union; the Respect for All Project; and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network—according to research by Jacqueline Leung on the Oregon Commission on Black Affairs.

Learn How to Foster Cultural Diversity in the Classroom

Teachers who wish to be at the forefront of their profession should have a strong foundation in understanding diversity and how to create an environment of inclusion in the classroom. To accomplish this, educators would do well to explore an awardwinning education program, such as American University’s Online Doctorate of Education . The curriculum is designed to provide educators with the tools and understanding to adapt to any classroom, regardless of its diverse student makeup— and to ultimately foster a wider appreciation of our human differences.

How to Become a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Specialist

Now more than ever, top-tier employees and applicants are looking for a holistic work environment. Competitive pay, benefits, and growth opportunities remain crucial to attracting the best talent, but those traditional asks are now partnered with a desire for assured equitable circumstances, diverse environments, and confirmed inclusion opportunities for all employees.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists make it their mission to ensure that an organization’s people are being treated fairly, with respect, and are aware of the opportunities available to them.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists work closely with the human resources team, and often a director or manager of diversity and inclusion. They are a supportive member of the larger HR family, focusing on an organization’s overall diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies, programs, advancements, and retention.

They are subject matter experts in the fields of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and are trusted to bring creativity and compassion to the department.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists are excellent communicators with a passion for justice in the workplace. They are often people with a talent for speaking, collaborating, and understanding the diverse backgrounds of others. They carry a high level of respect for global cultures and differences and are excited by team-building opportunities.

Day-to-day duties for a diversity, equity, and inclusion specialist can vary based on the industry you work in and the size of the department and company. However, the main goal of a diversity, equity, and inclusion specialist stays consistent –– ensure

equity in your organization. This can be done through managing diversity programs, projects, trainings, and communication logistics, cross-divisionally.

Across various industries, typical job functions for diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists include:

Event and programming organization.

Diversity presentations and trainings are often presented to multiple divisions and departments at once, through engaging events or experiential programs. Specialists are likely to organize, facilitate, and moderate an organization’s events.

Committee Support.

Many organizations host committees that allow specific groups of employees, or those with a shared connection, to connect and evaluate their needs from the organization. These groups could be a Women in the Profession Committee or an LGBTQIA+ Alliance. The specialist supports these committees by ensuring they have the proper resources and helps them to plan and meet their objectives.

Employee communication.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists are responsible for answering employee questions via email, phone, or in person. Employees may have questions about the organization’s progress on a specific issue or need help understanding the equity resources available to them. A specialist may also be the first point of contact when an employee brings a diversityrelated concern to the HR department.

Manage data & analyze reports.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists will likely write and distribute diversity, equity, and inclusion surveys, requests, and questionnaires. They will then compile the data from those resources and analyze it to deliver reports to their superiors in the HR department, and possibly C-suite stakeholders.

Do I Need a Certification For This Position?

Diversity, equity, and inclusion certifications can vary by industry and employers but are likely not a requirement for those applying for a specialist role. Programs like the Society of Human Resource Management’s Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty may help set you apart from other candidates when submitting applications.

How Do I Become a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist?

Diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists typically hold a bachelor’s degree in a human resources-related field. A bachelor of science business administration in human resource management, for example, encompasses coursework like business management, accounting, psychology, industrial relations, and more. This degree ensures you have the business understanding to enter an HR department with confidence, and allows room for study in the specific knowledge area you’d like to specialize in. For those looking to enter the diversity and inclusion space, there are capstone and program opportunities that focus specifically on those trainings.

Most diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists hold a bachelor’s degree. Those looking to advance further into a position like a VP of Human Resources or a Director of Diversity and Inclusion may benefit from an advanced degree. A BSBA in HRM is the best place to start, giving you the foundational knowledge you need before exploring diversity, equity, and inclusion roles.

What Skills Does a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist Need?

If you are interested in pursuing a diversity, equity, and inclusion position, it is beneficial to have a balance of hard and soft skills. Typical skills include:

• Passion for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work

• Excellent communication skills

• Respect for compliance and confidentiality

• Creativity and curiosity, with a solutions-based mentality

• Detail-oriented when ensuring compliance

• Ability to assess data and make recommendations

• Strong organizational skills

How Much Does a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Specialist Make?

As of February 2022, diversity, equity, and inclusion specialists made an average of $71,906 per year, according to ZipRecruiter. This ranks higher than other entry-level HR specialist roles, likely due to the need for this developing position and the specialized training involved. The typical pay for this role can vary by city and industry, but the range starts around $60,000 to $80,000, on average.

Tips for Surviving Work from Home Fatigue

Working from home has become the reality for millions of people all over the world, and this set-up is not about to change anytime soon. In fact, more and more employers are willing to offer the opportunity of working from home for employees. If you've been working from home for the past year and it doesn't look like you're going anywhere else anytime soon, here are some tips to stave off the WFH fatigue.

Create A Clear Home-Work Boundary

For many people who are used to working at the office, what makes WFH a big adjustment is the fact that lines between work and home become blurry or worse, disappeared completely. This is not hard to understand, especially for those whose hometo-work commutes were shortened into the few minutes it took to jump up from the bed and sit in front of the computer. Experts recommend creating routines to replace the commute to work, such as taking a shower, dressing up, and getting your morning cup of coffee before sitting down to do some serious work.

Get Regular Exercise

Exercise is still the best solution for a variety of WFH-related ills. Exercise takes your mind off from work, gives you a boost of endorphins, and helps keep your muscles toned and strong even if you stay indoors for most of the day.

Get some sun every day

If you have a yard or even a small outdoor balcony, get some sun for some essential vitamin D. Go out and have some morning sunshine with your coffee--it can help boost your mood and get you in the right mental state for the day's work ahead.

Limit Distractions by Setting up Physical Boundaries

Working from home set-ups are best done in places where you can focus on the work and nothing else. This is difficult to do at home, especially for those with small kids or other family members. While some are lucky enough to have a spare bedroom that they cant convert into a home office, others may not have that luxury. Opt for the laundry room or a walk-in pantry if you really need privacy. A corner in the kitchen or the living room can be turned into a semi-private office area with a cheap foldable room divider or screen that you can buy from any home store.

Working from home requires some major changes in how we live and work. But with a few adjustments and creative tweaks, you can make this new normal work for you and your loved ones.
