CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

FEB/MAR 2023

Editorial Comment Table of Contents

As the editor of this publication, I read a lot about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. In the past few years, the discussion around these ideas has definitately increased. I've seen statistics reporting that more than 35% of companies consider diversity a high priority in their hiring practices, and companies with more diversity are 20-25% more profitable than those with less diversity. This is great news!

A concerning detail I recently read, however, is an article that says even with the great benefits companies are reoporting, these statistics are not translating directly to employees. There are still women who feel discriminated against, people of color feeling underreprestened at their place of employment, and those with disabilities still doing without important resources they need to succeed.

It's frustrating because so many reports make it clear that having a more diverse and inclusive workplace is beneficial to all involved. The reality is that the pendulum has swung so hard to one side for so many decades that it seems to be having trouble swinging back to the side where diversity resides. Perhaps in time, with hope, and effort, and determination, we can make the pendulum swing wide enough to eventually come to rest somewhere in the glorious middle where all people are treated equally regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or ability.

February is Black History Month How Did Black History Month Begin?

Black History Month’s first iteration was Negro History Week, created in February 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, known as the “father of Black history.” This historian helped establish the field of African American studies and his organization, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History , aimed to encourage “ people of all ethnic and social backgrounds to discuss the Black experience ”.

His organization was later renamed the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH) and is currently the oldest historical society established for the promotion of African American history

How did Black History Month become a national month of celebration?

By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil-rights movement and a growing awareness of Black identity, Negro History Week was celebrated by mayors in cities across the country. Eventually, the event evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History month. In his speech, President Ford urged Americans

to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history”.

Since his administration, every American president has recognized Black History Month and its mission. But it wasn’t until Congress passed “National Black History Month” into law in 1986 that many in the country began to observe it formally. The law aimed to make all Americans “ aware of this struggle for freedom and equal opportunity ”.

Why is Black History Month celebrated?

Initially, Black History Month was a way of teaching students and young people about Black and African-Americans’ contributions. Such stories had been largely forgotten and were a neglected part of the national narrative.

Now, it’s seen as a celebration of those who’ve impacted not just the country but the world with their activism and achievements. In the US, the month-long spotlight during February is an opportunity for people to engage with Black histories, go beyond discussions of racism and slavery, and highlight Black leaders and accomplishments.

Diversity in The Workplace Isn’t Enough: Businesses Need To Work Toward Inclusion

Our Employees

Diversity is now widely believed to be good for business. In the corporate world, it’s often referred to as Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) or Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) training or awareness.

Our Employees Connect Brilliant Minds Every Day

Not surprisingly, there is now a desire across all sectors to understand how organizations can harness diversity and inclusion to increase employee performance and well-being. Yet workplace diversity programs can often be ineffective, or even backfire . And when they do work, some programs can be unsustainable

Why does this happen? One reason is that, despite best intentions and companies wanting to hire diverse employees, organizations are often not equipped or ready to adapt their work environment to sustain diversity

We at IEEE realize how fortunate we are to work with the best and brightest. Our mission is to advance technology for humanity, and we do so from one of the best places to work in New Jersey.

We at IEEE realize how fortunate we are to work with the best and brightest. Our mission is to advance technology for humanity, and we do so from one of the best places to work in New Jersey.

This can lead to conflict within organizations, as well as a lack of belonging and acceptance by the new employees hired. In other words, the employees may be diverse, but they do not feel included. Employees who do not feel included are less likely to stay

Inclusion Goes Beyond Diversity

Perhaps it is not a surprise, then, that scholars have called for a shift in emphasis from studying diversity in the workplace to studying inclusion in the workplace , arguing that although diversity and inclusion are interrelated concepts, they are distinct.

How is inclusion different from diversity? Defining features of inclusive climates are reflected in policies, procedures and actions at all levels of an organization. Inclusive organizations are consistent with fair treatment of everyone, with a deliberate focus on groups that historically have fewer opportunities and who are still stigmatized within our society.

March 2023 equal opportunity employment journal Page 7 The IEEE is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer M/F/D/V Our Employees Connect Brilliant Minds Every Day 13-HR-0095-BPTW 2013 Ad-EEOC-Final.indd 1 3/15/13 4:13 PM

Importantly, inclusion goes beyond diversity. Differences among individuals are not just identified, but are celebrated and integrated into daily work life. These differences are also woven into the organization’s culture through policies, climate, leadership and practices.

Fundamentally, an inclusive climate is a diverse environment within an organization that values the contribution of all employees. It is a workplace climate where people with different beliefs, perceptions and observable characteristics are able to work effectively with others, feel valued, and have strong feelings of belonging within that organizational context.

This begs the question: How does an organization create an inclusive workplace?

ALL VOICES MUST BE HEARD

Members of the majority may feel targeted by EDIA programs and can have concerns about “reverse discrimination ,” leading to conflict within the group. If majority group members end up feeling “passed over,” they could become resentful and create an unwelcoming, negative work environment for new hires who may be perceived as under-qualified.

To combat this, organizations need to understand both the experiences of the minority and majority within an organization. Organizations must ensure that barriers and concerns are

understood, and proactive steps towards inclusion are taken. Employers need to understand their current workplace climate and learn what practices need to be addressed and implemented into their organization’s culture.

1. Harness The Power Of Inclusive Leaders

Managers are responsible for creating inclusion in the workplace . They must: show that they are comfortable with diversity; alter the rules of acceptable behavior to adapt to the new culture; create opportunities for dialogue about and across differences; demonstrate an interest in authentic (and in some cases learning to be authentic) diversity; and encourage authenticity in others.

Recent research shows that a leader’s pro-diversity beliefs, humility and cognitive complexity increase the likelihood of inclusive behavior, which in turn, has positive behavioral outcomes related to job performance, creativity and reduced turnover rates.

2. Intentional And Involved Decision-Making

Inclusive practices within an organization include ensuring there is participation in decision-making , proper communication and facilitation , conflict resolution procedures, and a safe work environment

3. An Open And Welcoming Start

It is important to start with the end in mind. Inclusive practices should begin at the very moment newcomers to an organization begin their tenure. There is a positive relationship between employee workplace onboarding and organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and job performance . Employee onboarding also reduces quitting intentions.

New employee onboarding should not only focus on

orientating newcomers to the organization, but is also a chance to familiarize newcomers with its inclusive practices and communicate that their unique beliefs, perceptions and characteristics are welcome and valued.

In situations where new hires may be the only person coming from a specific group of people, navigating the workplace becomes difficult and can feel exclusionary. Having access to mentors and colleagues with similar lived experience is beneficial for transition and overall retention

Shared Responsibility

It’s important to understand that, although these workplace attitudes and behaviors can shed light on how new employees relate to their workplaces, they don’t tell us how much new employees feel they can participate in decision-making, or how welcoming, healthy, and safe their work environment is. There is always work to be done to improve workplace culture.

Inclusion is everyone’s responsibility and doesn’t end after the hiring stage. If organizations truly want to retain diverse employees and have them be successful, they need to make consistent and sustained efforts to support the integration of these employees in the workplace.

The goal of EDIA programs is to help organizations develop an inclusive organizational climate and design employee onboarding training that focuses on the employees’ sense of belonging and well-being. A truly inclusive approach needs to create an inclusive climate, have inclusive leaders and implement inclusive practices. 2023

Reduce Distractions To Create A Productive Work Day

Your attention span is one of the primary essentials to having a productive work day, especially when operating in a competitive, tech-driven environment. Excessive distractions can pull you away from tasks, which can lead to missed assignments and due dates. Avoiding these distractions are critical to helping you get tasks and deliverables done on time. Here are several ways to reduce distractions and improve your work performance.

Reduce Instant Notifications

A sound or alert from a notification tool can easily pull you away from work. These notifications can include text messages from your phone or new email messages. Other notifications can exist in the form of apps such as Skype, chat, or WhatsApp. On the computer, be sure to turn off any communication tools that are not related to your work. In addition, for non-essential communication apps, be sure to turn off any sound notifications when you receive alerts.

Avoid Extensive Communication with Co-Workers

Making conversation with co-workers is normal, but extending these conversations can inhibit your work and theirs. During critical moments or busy times of the day, make efforts to limit your conversation with co-workers. You can keep your messages short and avoid any comments that may prolong a conversation. Instead, plan to meet your colleagues after work once the assignments or projects are done.

Avoid Looking at the Clock

Time-monitoring can be helpful for keeping track of how much time you have to complete a project before it is due. However, when you have tasks to handle, clock-watching can be a significant distraction. The more you take glances at the clock, the more you are conditioned to look at it repeatedly throughout the day. To prevent this, you can block out the clock or move your workstation to another part of your office where it is not visible.

Practice Meditative Solutions

At work, one of the most effective ways to improve your concentration is to meditate. Find a quiet, secluded spot at your office to practice meditation. You can even do it at your desk if you work in a quiet area. You can start off by standing, closing your eyes, sealing your lips, and concentrating on a specific object or thought. As you practice this, inhale and exhale through your nose while maintaining focus on the item you are thinking about. You can practice taking about 15 to 20 breaths per session.

What Are The Benefits of Getting A Job in Healthcare?

Healthcare workers have a sworn duty to save a life, or to contribute to the diagnosis and recovery of an ailing patient. They go to great lengths to preserve the lives of people in dire situations.

Atthe front line in the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic, healthcare workers are highly commended for their commitment and strong resolve. This is a very fulfilling job for people who are empathic, caring, and who excel at staying focused despite the stress of working through emergencies.

Compelling Reasons Why You Need to Work in The Healthcare Sector

The healthcare sector is one of the most resilient, and if you decide to refocus your career in this industry, you won’t be disappointed with your prospects.

Laddered and Varied Career Specializations

Perhaps due to an increasing demand that the sector finds hard to fill, an individual can start a career in the healthcare sector right after high school, as a volunteer or an assistant. It may not be particularly high–paying, but it can give you a glimpse of what healthcare workers do on a daily basis. If you decide to advance your career, you can go back to school and complete collegelevel programs, depending on the requirements of the position you’re looking at.

The healthcare industry also offers a vast range of specializations. For instance, if you’re a radiologic technologist, you can attend trainings to specialize in cardiovascular-interventional radiography, mammography or sonography.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities provide opportunities for their employees to pursue advanced training and education if they want to develop their careers without losing their current positions. Healthcare workers have the option to switch to other positions if they change their mind about the career path they want to pursue, and many of these transfers can be easy to manage.

Medical Professionals Can Fit In A Variety Of Work Environments

The variety of settings and occupations in the healthcare industry allows healthcare workers to change their work environment without necessarily changing careers. Typically, medical professionals work in hospitals or doctor’s offices, but many also work in universities, insurance companies, public health agencies, laboratories, and other varied settings.

Stable Jobs And Steady Earnings

Medical and healthcare facilities are usually open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which is one of the major reasons why the industry needs a high number of workers on a full-time, part-time, or on-call basis. The majority of healthcare workers are full-time employees, often taking overtime due to the high demand for their services.

While the work can sometimes be demanding, the healthcare sector offers high paying medical careers , especially if one has a bachelor’s degree. Workers are usually noticed and rewarded with a promotion when they display commendable performance and ethics.

Prestera Center provides clients and their families the highest quality of care ranging from outpatient services to 24-hour emergency care and residential substance abuse treatment.

Competitive Benefits

Most employers nowadays offer good benefits as their way of attracting and retaining the best workers. That’s because of the growing demand and competition for qualified medical personnel. Paid sick time, vacation, vision care, life insurance, dental insurance, and health insurance are just some of the many benefits that employees in the healthcare industry can expect.

Eligibility For Various Discount Schemes

Medical careers are among the most respected jobs in the world. From workers who keep hospitals clean to doctors who perform life-saving operations on patients, healthcare professionals play a key role in improving the lives of everyone on the planet. It’s no wonder why many organizations show respect and thank them for what they’re doing by offering discount schemes. You can make good savings on your car insurance, clothing, and meals at restaurants, among many others things.

Positions For All Educational Levels

The healthcare sector offers numerous opportunities and positions for individuals who possess a high school diploma, a bachelor’s degree or a specialized medical or nursing degree. Most nurses start as certified nursing assistants (CNAs), where only a high school or a General Education Development (GED) diploma, six months of training, and state certification are needed. They can then move on to become a licensed practical nurse, or get ahead of others by advancing to get an Associate Nursing Diploma in two years, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in four.

Self-Fulfilling Jobs

That Contribute To Society

Working for the healthcare sector makes you a contributor to the well-being of society as a whole. It’s no question that the community is highly dependent on the healthcare sector to address their needs for hospital admissions, consultations, and other routine and emergency care.

If you’re a natural at helping people and if making them feel better gives you a “high”, then the healthcare sector is for you. Every working day, you will be facing or taking care of different types of people – typically patients and their families who are under immense emotional and psychological pressure. Besides the emotional component, nurses also need to assist patients physically, and administrative workers have to communicate with families, too. It can be a stressful and physically demanding job, but at the end of the day, the whole community is thankful for the hard work and dedication of healthcare workers.

Take the case of health workers working amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Donations from the private sector poured in once the hospitals alerted authorities of depleting physical protective equipment (PPE) supplies. After providing care to the community for several years, it has been society’s turn to give back

Stimulating Work Environment

Healthcare facilities, especially hospitals, are one of the busiest workplaces. Even if you’re not handling emergency cases round-the-clock, there are always plenty of things to do, especially if you’re a nurse.

Besides regularly checking up on patients, you need to review and analyze charts and convey valuable information to the doctor so that they can come up with an effective treatment plan. Being in the healthcare sectors also allows you to stay updated on medical advancements and contribute to ongoing research.

Great Travel Opportunities

As a healthcare professional, your skills and work are not limited to the state or country you are currently working in. As the demand for skilled workers globally continues to increase, so do the opportunities to travel to greener pastures.

In the United States, nursing salaries vary per state, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you’re a registered nurse who wants to relocate for various reasons, you can check out the employment status in your field to know what to expect.

If you want to travel the world while addressing the demands of the people in dire situations, you can go as a healthcare professional and apply to international nonprofit groups, such as Doctors Without Borders or the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Flexible Working Hours

If you’re a parent or have other obligations but still need to work, the healthcare industry will be friendly to you. As healthcare and medical facilities are open at any time of the day (or night), working hours are never fixed at nine to five.

Apart from fulfilling your family duties during the day, you can also advance your education by studying during the day and working at night.

Some healthcare positions even allow employees to work remotely, thanks to flexible schedules and advancing technology. Assigning medical codes and submitting them can often be done by medical coders anywhere in the world. Medical transcriptionists can also translate abbreviations and check patient files for errors from home.

Non-patient-facing roles have become possible to carry out from home, thanks to how powerful internet technology has become. But are there work-from-home opportunities for healthcare jobs that require direct patient care? Yes, there are. In fact, because of roles like nursing case manager and nurse advocate, even registered nurses can now work remotely.

Explosive Industry Growth

From 2016 to 2026, healthcare jobs will grow by 18%, as projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s a much faster rate compared to the average for all other occupations. Some of the fastest-growing medical professions are nurse practitioner, dental hygienist, home health aide, and physical therapist assistant.

As a healthcare worker, this means more career opportunities for you. The explosive growth of healthcare jobs also means you’ll find employment more easily compared to jobseekers in other industries.

The chances of medical professionals remaining employed is also much greater than other fields. This is largely due to an aging population’s and advances in medicine. In the US alone, the growth of the aging population is increasing at an extraordinary rate. This boosts demand for medical workers across the board.

Page 16 equal opportunity employment journal March 2023
Some healthcare positions even allow employees to work remotely, thanks to flexible schedules and advancing technology.

The Affordable Care Act’s passage and implementation in the US also increased the demand for medical professionals. This health reform legislation provides medical insurance to millions more American citizens, which has not only revolutionized access to care, but created additional jobs for healthcare professionals.

5 PATHWAYS IN THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION

There are numerous opportunities and various specialties in the healthcare sector. The industry, though, is divided in five basic career pathways:

1 Diagnostic Services Pathway offers jobs that help identify a disease or condition by analyzing the health status of patients. This pathway includes workers who use tests to detect, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and other physical conditions, with the help of various medical tools and equipment. Radiologic or X-ray and ultrasound technicians, as well as cardiovascular and medical laboratory technicians, are few of the jobs in this category.

2. Therapeutic Services Pathways offers occupations that strive to improve the health status of a patient. Occupational and respiratory therapists, paramedics, pharmacists and registered nurses are few of the jobs under this category.

3. Support Services Pathway offers a wide range of jobs assignments that help keep the sector running. Support service employees are typically working behind the scenes. They’re the dietary technicians, biomedical equipment

technicians, and hospital maintenance engineers, among other healthcare facility maintenance staff.

4 . Health Informatics Pathway offers careers involving patient care documentation. It covers a wide variety of occupations, made up of people responsible for managing patient information, financial information, and computer applications related to health care. Roles include medical administrative assistant, nurse managers and healthcare administrators.

5 . Biotechnology Research and Development Pathway  offers careers that typically require a higher level of specialties aimed at using scientific and technical enhancements to improve diagnostic and therapeutic activities in health care. Toxicologists, biomedical engineers, and epidemiologist fall under this category.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The healthcare sector covers a wide-ranging set of career pathways that are quite flexible. Besides job security and a stable pay, working in the industry offers excellent opportunities for individuals who want to work even while pursing higher education or fulfilling personal and family obligations.

Because of the fast-paced environment and need for multitasking, working in the healthcare sector may be physical and mentally challenging, but at the end of the day, it can be highly fulfilling and rewarding, too.

Women in Law Enforcement

Gender inequality is still a defining aspect of law enforcement, even in today’s world of slowly increasing employment fairness. Women comprise only a small percentage of the local law enforcement in agencies across the nation. Though their presence in the police force dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, it’s only been noticeable in the past 40 years. In the 1970s, women accounted for roughly 2 percent of sworn officers, with most of the women holding clerical positions .

Yet, despite progressive legislation aimed at procuring gender equality in the United States, women today make up only 13 percent of the force, most significantly in larger departments. Women in law enforcement are often inexplicably resented by their male counterparts and many face harassment. Additionally, many women encounter a ‘brass’ ceiling and are unable to rise to supervisory positions despite their qualifications. Many women do not even try to reach these positions because of fear of oppression from male coworkers. Few women receive the guidance necessary to overcome this obstacle; however, the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE) has been working hard since 1995 to mentor women in executive positions and help guide new female officers to grasp the opportunity to achieve these leadership roles. Their president, Commander Kristen Ziman of the Aurora (Illinois) Police Department who has endured the hard process of becoming an executive, shared her experience

as a woman in law enforcement and her recommendations to others starting this difficult journey. When Commander Ziman became a police cadet in 1991, women in the Aurora Police Department had not advanced beyond the rank of patrol officer. While the inequality did not figure into her decision, she also did not aspire to obtain a leadership position. She was conscious of the minority situation, and was the only woman of six officers to enter the department in 1994. While at the police academy, she felt that she and the other women in her position often “needed to prove [them]selves.” Whereas their male counterparts were easily accepted, the women were automatically considered inferior and only seemed to be able to change this perception by showing the men otherwise. The women in the academy were watched more closely and felt they were expected to do something incorrectly. Yet, in her experience, the moment that competency was proven, much of the inequality faded away.

But some still remained. After three successful months of training, the head of the academy met with Commander Ziman and her Field Training Officer. The FTO was asked if Ziman had ever been in a fight. Ziman had not, but her FTO said that she did not need to prove herself that way because of her ability to talk through a potentially dangerous situation. Ziman was later informed by her FTO that such a question was never asked of the male cadets. Ziman was very fortunate in that there weren’t many similar incidents during the course of her career. She simply tried to do her job and do it well, and as a result, her competency was not questioned. Ziman was the first female lieutenant, and later commander, in Aurora city history. According to her, at this level, gender is rarely an issue. Rather, every leader is being watched by both the officers and

the general public.

During her years spent rising through the ranks and since attaining her current role, Ziman has helped to promote

of the main reasons why so few women have the necessary aspirations: The hard work hours required of a law enforcement executive do not mix well with family obligations. Ziman often suggests that women find a supportive partner who will help them reach their dreams by easing the strain of the many hard work hours. Although she understands many women’s dilemma, she does believe that more women are necessary for a police force to function properly. The police’s first priority is to “emulate the community we serve.” Thus far, the small percentage of women on the force impedes this from happening. The discrimination women in law enforcement face today may not be as extreme as it was, but it is still a problem. “Some of it is self-imposed, presently,” but improvement is still possible. Ziman recalled that her first FTO was a woman. Without describing the unpleasant events the FTO had experienced in previous years, Ziman noted that it was “unmentionable, the things that happened to her.” Also, the men “didn’t want her to be there” and would exclude her from office

activities. Accordingly, the FTO had developed a strong feeling of resentment toward her profession.

Despite these common past occurrences, Ziman claimed that women today, just like men, are responsible for their own careers. They need to be assertive and listen to the voice inside of them urging them to strive for success. Ziman waited, like many women do, to rise in the ranks. She was told to take the sergeant’s test rather than seeking out the opportunity. And many women unfortunately fear being ridiculed by male coworkers if they attempt to reach the executive level.

Since its creation in 1995, NAWLEE has quickly grown into a national organization, guiding and helping women in law enforcement around the country. Its staff, headed by Commander Ziman, is composed of fellow law enforcement executives working to address gender discrimination and end the inequality that pervades the profession.

Examples Showing Integrity in The Workplace

You’re not likely to see the phrase ‘candidate must have integrity’ listed under the essential requirements for a job listing, even though you should know that every employer automatically expects you to show integrity in your work. So, if you’re job hunting or just want to look good on your first day, you should familiarize yourself with integrity in the workplace.

In this article, our main aim is to help you understand the meaning of integrity, or doing the right thing in your professional life, and what it means regarding leadership and teamwork. Additionally, we mention multiple examples of integrity for personal use in the workplace and answer why it’s important to execute them regularly.

What is Integrity?

Integrity is the quality or state where people hold themselves to a high moral standard . In turn, they enforce their upstanding ethics regardless of surrounding circumstances.

In simpler words, integrity is to treat others how you would like them to treat you. It’s the idea that you’ll still behave honestly and befittingly even if no one is watching you.

What is Integrity in the Workplace?

High integrity applies itself in the workplace through the business relationships with those team members around you.

The City of Cincinnati is dedicated to providing equal employment without regard to race, gender, age, color, religion, disability status, marital status, sexual orientation or transgendered status, or ethnic, national or Appalachian origin, or on the basis of any other category protected under federal, state and local laws.

It means you embody ethical principles and a positive work environment among your colleagues and in front of your employers.

How to Demonstrate Integrity in the Workplace

Below, we explore the importance of honesty and integrity examples in the workplace, how you can make it one of your strengths, and the best ways for business leaders to embody them:

1. Honesty

Integrity and honesty go together, and neither can exist without the other. The example of honesty and integrity translates into being open with your colleagues and peers without taking advantage of either. It doesn’t mean passing along unnecessary comments or intentionally lying in the workplace.

2. Respect

Respect comes from intent listening. You can show your care and concern by keeping an open heart and mind, giving the person in front of you the benefit of the doubt.

You should constantly be respectful to your peers, subordinates, or fellow workers. Maintaining a respectable demeanor means you abstain from engaging in rude activities, such as eavesdropping and gossiping.

In short, an excellent example of respect is listening to others

and asking thoughtful questions when necessary. Acting with respect sets an example and reduces reckless behavior.

3. Promise Keeping

A person of integrity keeps their promises. When you ask someone to get something done for you, and they promise they’ll have it done, but they don’t, it shows a lack of integrity. This vicious cycle repeats itself several times before you regret asking for their help.

We’ve all been there, so imagine doing the same thing to others? It’s not good for anyone in the workplace to be unreliable, and they’ll soon become a liability rather than an asset.

In other words, your peers won’t think twice before laying off someone who can’t stick to their word. To avoid this, give promises you know you can keep, and when you know you can’t, perhaps make a simple phone call, be honest, and say why.

4. Trustworthiness

Building the fundamental value of trust in the workplace will depend on how responsible and reliable you are. You don’t need to become close friends with everyone you work with to gain their trust; there are easier ways to do this.

When earning the respect of a trustworthy person, your actions must speak for you—keeping to your promises, having

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best career for each person depends on their individual skills, interests, and goals. However, engineering is generally a good career choice for those who are interested in using their technical skills to solve problems and improve the world around them. Engineering careers are expected to grow at a faster than average rate in the coming years, so there is good job security in this field. Furthermore, engineers typically earn high salaries and enjoy many other benefits, such as flexible work schedules and opportunities to work remotely.

Engineering can be found in a

variety of fields such as medicine, space, entertainment, transportation, and the environment. Engineering is concerned with how an invention functions and how it is carried out. Engineers’ roles allow them to work from home, in labs, or outside.

Why is Engineering Important in the Modern World?

Engineers play an important role in society by directly contributing to society’s well-being and the people who comprise it. The primary focus of an engineer is on product design or improvement, either creating a new product or improving an existing one. Engineers make it possible for us to live a more comfortable, productive, and fulfilling life as a result of their work.

One of the most important skills engineers can develop is the ability to solve problems. An engineer’s job description includes a wide range of tasks such as evaluating a situation, identifying problems, and coming up with solutions. Employers will evaluate your ability to handle adversity in

high ethical standards, and holding yourself accountable when at fault are good places to start.

Since trust can be fragile, the best policy is to continue reinforcing it with a positive attitude and absolute commitment.

5. Reliability

If an employer can’t rely on their employee to get the job done, why keep them ? An employee who needs someone constantly watching over them to ensure they’re doing what they’ve been tasked with is no good.

That’s why reliability is necessary for having integrity in the workplace. It’s taking the time to listen to others’ requests and promptly respond to them.

Not just that, but being reliable also means that your colleagues, potential employees, and peers can count on you to accommodate their needs whenever convenient for you.

6. Responsibility

Responsibility is an essential factor in having a job. No matter how simple your tasks seem, you are responsible for them alone.

A lack of responsibility is evident when you mindlessly carry out jobs. Doing so shows how irresponsible you are and breaks the trust you’ve built with your colleagues and peers. Being responsible goes hand in hand with acting in a reliable and trustworthy manner. It tells your managers that they can entrust you with more responsibility if they ever need to.

7. Pride

Pride typically connotes arrogance or a sense of entitlement. However, pride here suggests your expectations of yourself and your teammates.

Simply put, pride is that feeling you get when you’ve poured your heart into a project and watched it become a significant success. A sensation you only get when you know you’ve gone through considerable efforts to achieve such work.

Having pride in the workplace also entails that you care

about the outcomes of your job, and it means you appreciate those who demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment when working with you.

The Advantages of Having Integrity in the Workplace:

• Fostering the critical trait of workplace integrity rewards any business with a plethora of advantages, including:

• Increase in company production

• Strong inner relationships

• Positive employee experience

• Upholding an honorable company image

• A harmonious work environment

• High employee morale

• Creating multiple career advancement opportunities

• Recognition of hard work

• Personal integrity at work will also reflect positively on your personal life

Final Thoughts on Showing Integrity at Work

Understanding what a high level of integrity is and applying the concept’s basic ideas to your work is essential for being an exemplary employee. Companies might not explicitly require it, but that’s only because it’s common sense to hold oneself with high integrity and respect. Make yourself look reliable in front of your peers by sticking to the critical examples of high integrity in the workplace mentioned above.
