anufacturing technologists develop tools, implement designs, or integrate machinery, equipment, or computer technologies to ensure effective manufacturing processes. Other names for this job might include Business Process Analyst, Manufacturing Engineering Technologist, Manufacturing Planner, Manufacturing Specialist, Manufacturing Technologist, Manufacturing Technology Analyst, Technical Fellow, Tool Design Engineer, Tool Planner. Typical Salary: $62,820 Job Satisfaction Rate: 70% said they were satisfied with their job and 60% said they find that their job makes the world a better place or helps to make someone else’s life better. On a daily basis, manufacturing technologists monitor or measure manufacturing processes to identify ways to reduce losses, decrease time requirements, or improve quality. They ensure adherence to safety rules and practices. A typical day for a manufacturing technologist includes monitoring the productivity or efficiency of industrial operations. Besides the “typical day” things that Manufacturing Technologists do, they prepare layouts, drawings, or sketches of machinery or equipment, such as shop tooling, scale layouts, or new equipment design, using drafting equipment or computer-aided design (cad) software. They might also develop or maintain programs associated with automated production equipment. On a weekly to monthly basis, Manufacturing Technologists estimate manufacturing costs. and identify opportunities for improvements in quality, cost, or efficiency of automation equipment. In addition, they recommend corrective or preventive actions to assure or improve product quality or reliability. Although specific duties may vary, many of them select material quantities or processing methods needed to achieve efficient production. To some Manufacturing Technologists, it is also their responsibility to verify weights, measurements, counts, or calculations and record results on batch records. A typical week or month for them might include: • Create graphical representations of industrial production systems. • Develop technical methods or processes. • Estimate operational costs. • Design industrial equipment. • Recommend technical design or process changes to improve efficiency, quality, or performance.
