Marc Augé En un mundo que avanza a una velocidad agobiante, darse el tiempo de desarrollar una idea sobre uno mismo: educar esa idea, enriquecerla, sazonarla, permitirle crecer y luego dar frutos parece una tarea titánica.

Tal vez debido a esto es que muchos apelan a la facilidad de la no-construcción de la identidad. Y con ello terminan adhiriendo su ser a alguna identidad colectiva que los anula como individuos y que entorpece su crecimiento.

Y gran parte del problema es el bombardeo de imágenes visuales y psicológicas proveniente del Norte (ahí estamos otra vez saludando a esos amigos que parece llevamos en la espalda), la televisión, la música, la publicidad, que se consume está plagada de estereotipos manejados allá; pero abrazados acá con total desenfado y sin ninguna culpa.

Las identidades pueden adquirir sentido en su construcción discursiva. Un discurso que construye una ‘realidad’, pero que también valida intelectualmente la creación identitaria y marca las fronteras con el otro, el diferente, el qué está ubicado fuera de mis límites discursivos.

Editora Haciendo eco a la frase del antropólogo francés Marc Augé, en la cual habla sobre la necesidad de la presencia del otro, publicamos la presente edición de la revista EntreMundos. Con el fín de acercarnos al otro, y de esta forma afirmar tanto la identidad como la alteridad.

Quisimos representar muchas más identidades. Lamento en lo personal que después de haber contactado a seis diferentes colectivos para que hablaran sobre la identidad sexual, ninguno nos enviara su artículo.

Esta edición no es sobre poner etiquetas a las personas, está pensada para hablar de la riqueza que como humanos tenemos en Guatemala, y sacudirnos las diferencias para reconocernos en el otro. La alteridad.

In a world moving at an overwhelming speed, taking the time to develop an idea about oneself – to raise the idea, enrich it, season it, allow it to grow and then to bear fruit – seems a daunting task. Perhaps it’s because of this that many resort to the ease of not constructing an identity. And in doing so, they end up adhering to some collective identity that overrides them as individuals and hinders their growth.

And a big part of the problem is the bombardment of visual and psychological imagery from the North (there we go again, waving to those friends who seem to carry us on their backs) – television, music, advertising, the plague of stereotypes that are created there that are but embraced here with complete ease and without any guilt.

Identities can gain meaning through discursive construction.

A discourse constructs a ‘reality’, and further intellectually validates the identity-creating process, and sets the as to what is ‘the other,’ what is ‘different,’ – that which is located outside my discursive boundaries.

Echoing the words of French anthropologist Marc Augé, in which he talks about the need for the presence of ‘the other,’ we publish this edition of the EntreMundos magazine. We do so with the goal of bringing ourselves closer to ‘the other’ in order to affirm both identities and otherness.

We wanted to represent many more identities. I personally regret that after having contacted six different groups to talk about sexual identity, none sent us their article.

This edition is not about putting labels on people; it is meant to speak of the richness that we humans have in Guatemala, and we shake out these differences to find ourselves in the other. The otherness.

Noticias SOBRE Derechos Humanos Juicio por Genocidio Los generales en situación de retiro José Efraín Ríos Montt y José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez, deberán ser juzgados por delitos de genocidio y deberes contra la humanidad, según resolvió el juez Miguel Ángel Gálvez, quien consideró que existen pruebas suficientes de su implicación en las masacres cometidas en el área Ixil.

De acuerdo con la información, publicada en medios locales, el juez Gálvez hizo referencia a las actas ministeriales de 142 testigos, 126 certificaciones, 84 declaraciones y 61 peritajes presentados por el Ministerio Público; además leyó los decretos de la Ley Constitutiva del Ejército, como parte de un análisis de los medios de prueba.

El Ministerio Público acusó a Ríos Montt de haber dispuesto del ejército para ordenar 15 masacres en las que habrían muerto 1 mil 771 indígenas de la etnia Maya Ixil; esto provocó que 29 mil familias de esa región fueran desplazadas a vivir en condiciones infrahumanas en las montañas.

Con respecto a Rodríguez Sánchez, ex director de inteligencia G-2, se le atribuye de haber implementado los planes operativos Sofía, Firmeza 83 y Plan Ixil, que se desprendieron del plan de campaña Victoria 82.

El juez indicó que el conflicto armado interno fue reconocido a nivel internacional, tuvo seguimiento por la Organización de Naciones Unidas con una Comisión Verificadora de Derechos Humanos y leyó algunos testimonios de los sobrevivientes.

La defensa de Ríos Montt está en manos de varios abogados, entre los que sobresale Danilo Rodríguez, quien paradójicamente fue guerrillero por más de 22 años, argumentó que el ex jefe de Estado desconocía de las masacres.

Misión Española Parlamentarios españoles que integran una misión de observación de la situación de Derechos Humanos en Guatemala informaron en enero que la falta de información veraz y la deficiente comunicación en el Estado para la solución de conflictos sociales son notorios en el país.

La comitiva arribó al país el 20 de enero para entrevistarse con representantes de organizaciones nacionales e internacionales, en la capital y en Quiché y Huehuetenango, con el fin de constatar el manejo de los derechos humanos.

El parlamentario Iñaki Anasagasti dijo que

insuficientes canales de diálogo y participación para proveer dirección democrática a las situaciones que se han dado por la presencia de compañías transnacionales.

También evidenciaron la persistencia de altos índices de violencia, en especial el femicidio; la presencia del narcotráfico, del crimen organizado y su penetración en algunas instituciones.

Violencia contra la mujer ONU Mujeres y Amnistía Internacional manifestaron su preocupación y pidieron a las autoridades investigaciones exhaustivas por la violencia generada contra las mujeres, principalmente por los casos recientes.

Mediante un comunicado, María Machicado Terán, representante de ONU Mujeres en Guatemala, lamentó las muertes recientes ocurridas en el país, así como las justificaciones que pueden originarse cuando se asocian con actividades del crimen organizado. “El número de muertes violentas de las últimas semanas ha conmocionado a la opinión pública luego de que la indignación aumenta cuando son niñas, porque no se comprende las razones que pudieron llevar a los autores a segar sus vidas, a una edad temprana. Pero la indignación ante la muerte de mujeres corre el riesgo de perderse e incluso se encuentran justificaciones en algunos casos cuando son asociados al crimen organizado”.

Según indicó, “nada justifica una muerte y hemos dejado de entender que las causas de las muertes de mujeres están asociadas a cómo lo percibimos dentro de una sociedad: las actitudes y normas sociales que nos rigen. Detrás del comportamiento no solo de los victimarios, sino de los medios de comunicación, investigadores, jueces, policías, autoridades públicas y ciudadanía en general, están los prejuicios y estereotipos sobre los roles que una mujer debe cumplir en una sociedad”.

Por aparte, Amnistía Internacional, reiteró su petición a las autoridades guatemaltecas, para que adopten medidas para proteger a las mujeres contra la violencia, y que garantice que tanto las investigaciones como los enjuiciamientos en homicidios de mujeres se llevan a cabo de forma efectiva, oportuna y exhaustiva.

Rechazan Hidroeléctrica Autoridades indígenas de Nebaj, Quiché, pidieron en vista pública, en la Corte de Constitucionalidad (CC), que se derogue el acuerdo ministerial 244-2011, con el que se autorizó la construcción de dos

hidroeléctricas en el lugar sin haber consultado a los pobladores.

Más de 10 comunidades son las afectadas con la construcción de las dos centrales generadoras de electricidad, con capacidad de 18.75 megavatios.

La abogada Catalina Vásquez Ventura, representante de los demandantes, explicó que la apelación a la acción de amparo denegada por la Corte Suprema de Justicia se originó por tres aspectos.

Los tres reclamos son, primero, la omisión de la CSJ de citar y notificar en ixil; segundo, que el ministro de Energía y Minas de esa época, Alfredo Pokus, omitió la consulta previa en las comunidades ixiles del municipio —debido a que aplicó el reglamento de la Ley General de Electricidad, artículo 5, para no celebrar la consulta—. Según quienes presentaron los amparos, contraviene lo establecido en el Convenio 169, de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo.

El tercer aspecto es la emisión del acuerdo ministerial 244-2011, publicado en el Diario de Centro América el 14 de diciembre del 2011, por medio del cual se otorgó la autorización definitiva a Hidroxil, S.A., por 50 años.

El 6 de agosto del 2012, la CSJ denegó el amparo, por improcedente.

El segundo alcalde indígena de la localidad, José Chávez Brito, en idioma ixil, expresó: “Tenemos una gran preocupación porque somos invisibles, o sea que no nos consultan; nos han violado nuestros derechos. Y como autoridad, al igual que ustedes, vengo a pedirles que se derogue el acuerdo — ministerial— 244-2011”.

Agregó que son propietarios de los terrenos en donde se instalarán las centrales generadoras de electricidad.

Rodríguez Sánchez, the former director of the G-2 intelligence unit was blamed for having implemented the operating plans Sofia, Firmeza 83 and Plan Ixil, which broke away from campaign plan Victoria 82.

The judge stated that the internal armed conflict was recognized at the international level, was monitored by the United Nations’ Human Rights Verification Mission, and he read some testimonies from survivors.

The defense of Ríos Montt is in the hands of various lawyers. Danilo Rodríguez stands out among them; paradoxically he was a guerrilla fighter for over 22 years but argued that the former Head of State was unaware of the massacres.

Minería Spanish Mission Las autoridades de gobierno aprobaron el Estudio de Impacto Ambiental (EIA) del proyecto minero Progreso VII Derivada, mejor conocido como “El Tambor”, que abarca parte del territorio de 5 municipios de Guatemala, inviable debido a la carencia de información, planificación y garantías de recuperación, así como la presencia de arsénico en el agua.

Las imágenes, mapas y figuras de ingeniería insertos en el EIA por la empresa minera son ilegibles, los planes de monitoreo son vagos, el análisis de métodos alternativos de minería y procesamiento es limitado.

Se desconoce si EXMINGUA, subsidiaria de Kappes, Cassiday & Asociates, ha proporcionado una garantía para la recuperación, ambiental luego de concluido el proyecto.

Spanish parliamentarians that form an observation mission of the human rights situation in Guatemala reported in January that the lack of reliable information and the State’s poor communication to solve social conflicts are notorious in the country.

The delegation arrived in the country on January 20 to meet with representatives of national and international organizations in the capital and in Quiché and Huehuetenango, in order to determine the handling of human rights.

Parliamentarian Iñaki Anasagasti said that among their concerns were the inadequate channels for dialogue and participation to

provide democratic direction for situations arising due to the presence of transnational companies.

Further more, they cited the evidence of the persistence of high levels of violence – especially femicide, the presence of drug trafficking, organized crime and its infiltration in some institutions.

Violence Against Women UN Women and Amnesty International expressed concern and asked the authorities for extensive investigation into violence against women, chiefly due to recent cases.

In a statement, María Machicado Terán, representative of UN Women in Guatemala, lamented the recent deaths in the country, as well as the justifications that can arise when they are associated with organized crime. “The number of violent deaths in recent weeks has deeply shaken the public, and the outrage increases when they are girls because it’s incomprehensible why the perpetrators could cut their lives short at an early age. But the outrage over women’s death runs the risk of being lost, and found to be justifiable in some cases, when they are associated with organized crime” As she stated, “nothing justifies a murder and we have stopped understanding that the causes of women’s deaths are associated with how we perceive them within a society – the social attitudes and norms that govern us. Not only behind the behavior of the murderers, but also behind the media, researchers, judges, police, public authorities and citizens in general, are the prejudices and stereotypes about the roles that women should play in society.”

Separately, Amnesty International reiterated its call to the Guatemalan authorities to take measures to protect women against violence, and to ensure that both investigations as well as female homicide prosecutions are conducted in an effective, timely and exhaustive manner.

He added that they own the land on which the central electricity generators were installed.

Mining Government authorities approved the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of Mining Project Progress Derivative VII, better known as “The Tin Drum”, which covers part of five municipalities in Guatemala, unfeasible due to lack of information, planning and guarantees recovery, and the presence of arsenic in the water.

The images, maps and engineering figures embedded in the EIA by the mining company are illegible, monitoring plans are vague, analysis of alternative methods of mining and processing is limited.

It is unknown whether EXMINGUA subsidiary of Kappes, Cassiday & Asociates, has provided a guarantee to recover the environmental area after the project’s completion.

More than 10 communities are affected by the construction of two electricitygenerating plants with a capacity of 18.75 megawatts.

OPINIóN Sin identidad Fabiola Arrivillaga ¡Que dilema resulta para la mente cuando una persona decide saber quién es! Comencemos con lo de la memoria trascendental e histórica con la que nacemos, esa memoria genética que nos permite conocer ciertos conceptos antes de que nos sean explicados, ese “siento no se que” cuando vemos o experimentamos, algunas veces, algo nuevo. El concepto de identidad es una de esas cosas que pareciera nacer con nosotros.

Identidad es una palabra derivada del latín idéntica, que significa ser igual o idéntico a otra cosa. Los seres humanos vamos construyendo una identidad, o varias, a lo largo de la vida; su ingrediente primario son los pensamientos. Sin embargo, el problema radica en que nos olvidamos de la esencia misma de pensar; de repente, sin sentirlo, al aprender el nombre de las cosas o el nuestro propio, cambiamos ese pensamiento esencial por palabras.

Pensamos con palabras que son, nada más y nada menos, representaciones de cosas. Resulta ahora que nuestra conciencia no es tal sino una colección de cosas. ¡Qué lamentable!

Así, construimos nuestra identidad a partir de un nombre, una característica física, una forma de carácter, un talento o una torpeza, una religión o canon moral, una profesión, una enfermedad, un estado civil… Conforme nos hacemos mayores, y nos dejamos vencer por el flujo del dinero y de los bienes adquiridos con éste, nuestra identidad absorbe conceptos como deuda, riqueza, novedoso, exclusivo, clase, sociedad, alcurnia, poder, y otros tantos, que hacen aún más material este elemento, que se supone sea más trascendental. El término mío, antes sólo heredado de los mayores que nos daban las cosas “de valor”, adquiere

sentido.

Resultamos apegándonos a nuestro aspecto, al carro nuevo, al color de las paredes, hasta a las actividades de los hijos.

Cada vez queremos m á s , com p ram o s más y, a u n q u e duela, cada vez somos m e n o s .

We begin with the transcendental and historical memory with which we are born, that genetic memory that allows us to know certain concepts before they are explained to us, that “I feel I don’t know what” when we see or experience, at times, something new. The concept of identity is one of those things that seems to be born with us.

De pronto y abusivamente, hacemos propios los nuevos conocimientos científicos o culturales. El yo, mentiroso sobre todos los mentirosos, acaba por ganarnos.

Entonces, ¿cuál es la gran tragedia? Resulta simple. Pienso a partir de conceptos que nacen de cosas, de las que me apropio. Ya lo dijo Descartes, refiriéndose a la más básica condición de vida, “pienso, luego existo”.

Eckhard Tolle, en su libro “Una nueva tierra” lo expresa claramente cuando afirma que, en estos tiempos, tengo, luego pienso, luego existo: así que nuestra nueva condición de existir termina siendo tengo, luego existo. ¡Qué pena! ¿Cómo saber si hemos caído en la “tengo existencia”? Si perdimos la capacidad de asombro, de sorpresa y de gozo ante las pequeñas cosas espontáneas que ocurren a nuestro alrededor, estamos casi perdidos.

Podríamos, sin embargo, salvarnos de las identidades. A veces, el ejercicio de “perder al pájaro”, sin tratar de construir oraciones mentales, permite que nos libremos un instante de todo ese lenguaje opresor de las cosas. Cerrar los ojos, caer en silencio y disfrutar del ruido que los carros y camionetas hacen por la carretera, puede ayudar también. El silencio propio, librarnos de hablar por un buen rato, ocuparnos en crear, sonreír a menudo, también resulta vitamínico.

Si alguien me dijera, hoy, que carezco de identidad propia, creo que he de responderle, haciendo gala de descaro, que desearía que tuviera razón. Ojalá algún día lo consiga.

We end up g r o w i n g attached to our appearance, to the new car, to the color of the walls, even to our children’s extracurricular activities. We keep wanting more, buying more and, although it hurts, we keep becoming less. We never feel satisfaction.

Suddenly and unjustly, we make new scientific and cultural knowledge our own. The I, liar above all liars, ends up beating us.

So what’s the great tragedy? It’s simple.

I think based on concepts that are born of things, which I appropriate.

Descartes said it, referring to the most basic condition of life: “I think, therefore I am.” Eckhard Tolle, in his book A New Earth expresses it clearly when he says that, in these times, I have, therefore I think, therefore I am, so that our new condition of existing ends up being I have, therefore I am. What a shame!

How do we know if we’ve fallen into the “I have existence”? If we lose the ability to be astonished, to be surprised, to feel enjoyment when experiencing the little

spontaneous things that occur around us, we are almost lost. We will suffer much more, we will be more anxious, we will live in more of a hurry.

We could, however, save ourselves from identities. Sometimes the “lose the bird” exercise, without trying to create mental sentences, allows us to free ourselves for an instant from that oppressive language of things. Closing your eyes, falling silent, and enjoying the noise that the cars and trucks make on the road can help too. Our own silence, freeing ourselves from speaking for a while, occupying ourselves in creating, smiling often, can also be beneficial.

If someone were to tell me today that I lack a personal identity, I believe that I would have to respond, making a show of impertinence, that I wish that they were right. Hopefully one day I attain it.

“Identity” is a word derived from the Latin idéntica, which means being equal or identical to something else.

As human beings we construct an identity, or various, throughout our lives. Its main ingredient are thoughts.

However, the problem lies in our forgetting the essence of thinking itself; all of a sudden, without realizing it, when we learn the name of things or our own names, we exchange that essential thought for words. We think with words that are representations of things, no more and no less. As a result our conscience is now no more than a collection of things. What a pity!

quantified in dollars and we become commodities. And commodities, by their nature, can easily be traded or destroyed.

To paraphrase the Apostle Paul: “the wages of consumption are death.”

In his book The Power of Myth, the mythologist Joseph Campbell talks at length about life’s great paradox: “the most hideous act…is the act of life – namely, killing and eating another living thing.” Life cannot exist without death. We participate in death when we consume, and we participate in life when we create. Both are part of the human condition.

But our identity must always come from what we create, never from what we consume.

Pero nuestra identidad debe siempre venir de lo que creamos, nunca de lo que consumimos.

Me explico: obviamente debemos consumir todo tipo de cosas, desde comida, hasta información pasando por la educación. Pero esas tres son inútiles si encontramos nuestro valor en las marcas que compramos, los períodicos que leemos y los diplomas que nos hemos ganado. Identificarnos como un “bebedor de gallo”, un “suscriptor de Prensa

Libre”, o un alumno “de la Marroquín” (o un miembro de esta iglesia o de ese partido político) cambia nuestra identidad por la marca de un anunciante. Haciendo eso, devaluamos nuestra propia humanidad.

El periodista Chris Hedges lanzó el mismo argumento en una entrevista cuando dijo en un reciente discurso (y yo le parafraseo): “la gente ya no asiste a una gran escuela solo por la educación, van para ser marcados”. Como los animales son marcados por sus propietarios, permitir que nuestras identidades sean tomadas por las organizaciones que venden sus productos, por un dios o una ideología; es un acto que nos arranca nuestra humanidad. Cuando somos identificados por lo que consumimos, nuestras vidas son cuantificadas en dólares y nos volvemos bienes. Y los bienes pueden ser por naturaleza, cambiados o destruídos.

Parafraseando al apóstol Pablo quien dijo: “la paga del pecado (consumo en la traducción al inglés) es la muerte”. Si de hecho utilizáramos lo que consumimos para creación, empezaríamos a ver nuestras vidas transformadas y las comunidades sanadas.

Arte, familias, gobiernos transparentes, escuelas, niños, sistema judicial honesto, historias, matrimonios: todos requieren actos de creación, alguien que ordene el caos que les rodea para sanar entretener, educar o amar. Cuando nos identificamos

a nosotros mismos por las historias que vivimos, los niños que criamos, los ambientes que creamos, nuestras vidas se apegan a lo inmenso, a lo no calificable, lo eterno. Como decía el autor Jonathan Larson ” lo opuesto a la guerra no es la paz, es la creación”.

Esta idea se desmorona, sin embargo, tan pronto como la creación es egoísta. Por ejemplo, el culto a la personalidad creada por las principales figuras latinoamericanas como Eva Perón, Che Guevara, Hugo Chávez, o el subcomandante Marcos están vacías de cambio social significativo en sus respectivos países (o por lo menos de lograr un cambio en el ritmo). Aun y cuando se dio el resurgimiento de Marcos en el Sur de México; el avance de los derechos indígenas ahí ha tenido más que ver con la gente local trabajando diariamente con sus comunidades, que con un enmascarado que posa para las fotos. Algunas tribus creen que una fotografía puede robar tu alma; y estas cuatro figuras han cambiado su humanidad para convertirse en una figura venerada.

Solo cuando la creación es sobre otros, y nuestras identidades se entrelacen a los destinos de los que nos rodean, habremos encontrado nuestra salvación.

To explain: we must obviously consume all sorts of things, from food to information to education. But all three are useless if we find our self-worth in the brands we buy, the newspapers we read and the diplomas we’ve earned. Identifying first and foremost as a “Gallo-drinker”, a “Prensa subscriber,” or a “Francisco Marroquín alumni” (or a member of this church or that political party) trades our identity away in exchange for a brand from an advertiser. In doing so, we de-value our own humanity.

The journalist Chris Hedges makes this same argument when he said in a recent speech (and I paraphrase): “people don’t go to great schools for an education any more, they go there to be branded.” Like animals marked by their owner, allowing our identities to be co-opted by organizations selling a product, a god, or an ideology strips us of our humanity. When we are identified by what we consume, our lives can be

If, however, we use what we consume for creation, we begin to see lives transformed and communities healed. Art, families, transparent government, schools, children, an honest judiciary, stories, marriage: all require acts of creation, someone to order the chaos around them in order to heal, entertain, educate, or love. When we identify ourselves by the stories we live, the children we raise, the environments we create our lives become attached to the immeasurable, the non-quantifiable, the eternal. As the playwright Jonathan Larson once wrote: “the opposite of war isn’t peace.

It’s creation.”

This idea falls apart, however, when creation is self-serving. For example, the cults of personality created by major Latin American figures like Eva Perón, Che Guevara, Hugo Chavez, or Subcomandante Marcos are void of meaningful social change in their respective countries (or at least change accomplished by them). Even noting Marcos’ resurgence in Southern Mexico, advances in indigenous rights there have had more to do with local people working daily within their communities than a masked man posing for pictures. Some Mayans believe that a photograph can steal your soul, and these four figures may have proven that belief, seemingly trading their humanity to

become a worshipped image.

Only when creation is about others, and our identities become tied to the fates of those around us are we able to find salvation.

The upcoming trial of Ríos Montt is a perfect example of the tension between life and death, creation and consumption.

If his eventual conviction leads only to a stack of newspaper articles, a way for Pres.

Molina to argue for more U.S. aid, and one more incarcerated Genocidaire the trial will have been little more than escapist entertainment. The facts will be consumed, money will be spent, and an old man will die of old age.

But if this trial is taken as the start of a new creation, an opportunity to build a more open, honest, and hopeful country, then Guatemalans might find that their identity has become, as Campbell once wrote, “in accord with the grand symphony that this world is.”

March is Women’s History Month. To celebrate here are a few lesser-known women who nevertheless made an impact in their day, using education and perseverance to achieve success.

Nacida en la británica Nueva Jersey antes de mudarse con su familia a las Islas Británicas como resultado de la revolución americana, se convirtió en una figura histórica debido a su diario. Paso cuatro años, 1801-1805, en Jamaica como la esposa del gobernador. Sus comentarios nos dan una perspectiva única sobre la vida en las colonias británicas, conteniendo comentarios sociales así como detalles más mundanos sobre lo que comió y a qué hora se acostaba. Born in Cuba in 1832 and educated as a proper upper-class girl should be (i.e. enough to cook and run a household), things changed after her marriage. Her husband, Ignacio Mora de la Pera, had very liberal ideas and encouraged her to study languages, history, literature, and other subjects. She joined him and others in the effort to gain Cuban independence from Spain. While this group’s vision included a desire for racial equality, Betancourt went a step further, arguing for the rights of women. In 1871 Ana was caught by government forces and deported. She would never see her husband again, but spent her years teaching and supporting the cause of independence from afar.

Born in British New Jersey before moving with her family to the British Isles as a result of the American Revolution, Maria Nugent became a figure in history due to her own diary. She spent four years, 1801-1805, in Jamaica as the wife of the governor. Her comments give us a unique perspective on life in Britain’s colony, containing social commentary along with the more mundane details of what she ate and when she went to bed. Although she accepted many prejudices and norms of her time, she was also quick to criticize her fellow females, especially after “dull” dinners with “the ladies almost mute, and staring at me,” preferring the company of women who had interesting thoughts and were in some ways self-sufficient.

“Una mujer tiene que ser dos veces mejor que un hombre para llegar a la mitad de la distancia”, dijo la autora Fannie Hurst. Ella lo sabía. Nacida en 1889 en EE.UU. en el estado de Ohio, Hurst logró un gran éxito con sus numerosas novelas, aunque no fue fácil. Ella inicialmente recibió 34 cartas de rechazo del “Saturday Evening Post”, realizó algunos trabajillos antes de ser finalmente publicada en esa revista. Fuera de su escritura, trabajó con la Liga Urbana, un grupo de derechos civiles para los afroamericanos, y por los derechos de las mujeres mayores, apoyó una serie de ideas que se consideraban radicales. Muchos de sus libros fueron llevados al cine, aumentando sus ingresos y haciendo de ella una de las escritoras mejor pagadas de su tiempo.

Throughout the Spanish conquest of the Americas, there was interaction between the traditional forms of government and those the Spaniards brought with them.

In the Mixtec region of Oaxaca, the traditional cacicazgo, or chieftainship, system remained in place for at least a century, with a number of female cacicas retaining power over the years. One such woman, Ana de Sosa, served as cacica of Tututepec (on the Pacific coast near the border of Oaxaca and Guerrero) for twenty years before her son succeeded her. During these years she successfully defended her holdings in court a number of times. She is considered the most powerful women in the region at that time, and her wealth was second only to that of Hernán Cortés.

“A woman has to be twice as good as a man to go half as far,” said author Fannie Hurst.

She would know. Born in 1889 in the U.S. state of Ohio, Hurst achieved great success with her numerous novels, although it didn’t come easily. She initially received 34 rejection letters from the Saturday Evening Post, working odd jobs in the meantime, before finally being published in that magazine. Outside of her writing, she worked with the Urban League, a civil rights group for African American, and worked for increased women’s rights, supporting a number of ideas that were considered radical. Many of her books were made into movies, adding to her income and making her one of the highestpaid writers of her day.

En la región mixteca de Oaxaca, el cacicazgo tradicional, permaneció durante al menos un siglo, con un número de mujeres caciques reteniendo el poder durante años.

Una de estas mujeres, Ana de Sosa, fue cacique de Tututepec (en la costa del Pacífico, cerca de la frontera de Oaxaca y Guerrero) durante veinte años antes de que su hijo le sucediera. Durante estos años defendió en la corte con éxito su participación varias veces. Ella era consideraba una de las mujeres más poderosas de la región en esa época, y su riqueza era secundada únicamente por la de Hernán Cortés.

MÚSICA Rock Chapin Guisela Echeverría Siempre he tenido la convicción de que cuando se trata de la identidad de la mayoría de nosotros los guatemaltecos no tenemos ninguna. Quiero decir que tendemos a identificarnos con muchas otras culturas e incluso alardear de ello... que si mi abuelo era italiano, que si mi abuela vino de España o que mi padre es de Alemania, y no me hagan empezar con todo los que nos encanta importar. Culturalmente hablando, especialmente de Norte América y algunos incluso de México. Pero de algo estoy segura, y es de que cuando hablamos de música tenemos un sonido muy rico y único.

Para serle fiel a mis gustos voy a referirme al género que me llega hasta el corazón: metal. Desde 1979 cuando bandas como Alux Nahual vio la luz con su primer álbum “Alux Nahual” la industria de la música guatemalteca estaba monopolizada con bandas de merengue como “Rana”, “FM de Zacapa” y “Brandly” entre otras. Y antes que eso nuestros abuelos y bisabuelos escuchaban marimba cada vez que almorzábamos los domingos. Y por favor no me lo tomen a mal, amo nuestro instrumento nacional, creo que es uno de los sonidos más bellos, únicos y representativos que yo he escuchado. Pero los tiempos han cambiado y a nuestra generación (por nuestra hablo de nosotros pequeños nacidos en los 70s) le gustan otro tipo de sonidos.

Pero volvamos a lo que nos convoca ¿quieren? Bandas como Alux Nahual, que significa el espíritu del nawal, abrieron la puerta para otras tantas diferentes bandas que les siguieron. ¿Quién puede olvidar gritar y saltas con el sonido de “Fiesta Privada” o “Duende” e incluso llorar y moquear con “Mujer” o “Libre Sentimiento” o “Vuelve” canciones que eran “obligadas”

en cualquier fiesta o celebración de quinces allá por los años 80s. Entonces la banda de Heavy Metal “Guerreros del Metal” y bandas de rock pop como Radio Viejo con canciones como “Ángel” eran la punta de lanza para bandas nuevas como “Viernes Verde”, y Bohemia Suburbana que cambiaron la escena musical en Guatemala para siempre con canciones como “Peces e Iguanas” y “Estadío”, los cuales todavía son himnos entre los jóvenes.

Luego vino “La Tona” 1994, “Fábulas Áticas” 1995, “Los Últimos Adictos” 1996, “Toba”, “Extinción” y “Golpes Bajos” 1995-7; por Xela estuvieron: “Sexto Estado”, “Empatía”, “Escalón” y recientemente “Viento en Contra”, “El Clubo” y otras más.

En 1994 tuve el privilegio y el honor de ir al más grande concierto celebrado en nuestro país llamado “Libertad de Expresión”, en el cual presentaron casi todas las bandas sus más recientes singles. Es una lástima que solo haya pasado una vez. Pero desde 1999 Omar Méndez de Viernes Verde organiza un festival anual llamado “La Garra Chapina” que empezó en La Bodeguita del Centro y ha sido un éxito desde entonces.

Guisela Echeverría I have always had the strong belief that when it comes to identity most of us Guatemalans have none. I mean we tend to identify ourselves with many other cultures and we even brag about it… if my grandpa was Italian, if my grandmother came from Spain or that my parent is from Germany; and do not get me start it on everything that we like to import, culturally speaking, specially from North America and some people even from Mexico, but anyway of there is one thing that I’m sure is that when it comes to music we have a very specific, rich and unique sound.

Con esto y todo lo demás también, tengo que decir que estas bandas han creado un sonido con el que nosotros como comunidad podemos identificarnos y sentirnos orgullosos, un sonido del que podemos decir es parte de nuestra identidad y que nosotros como guatemaltecos podemos identificarlo y reconocerlo a donde quiera que vayamos. Bien hecho artistas.

To stay true to my tastes I’ll refer to the genre that is dear to my heart, metal. Since 1,979 when bands like Alux Nahual saw the light with its first album “Alux Nahual” (1981) the Guatemalan music business was pretty much monopolized with “Merengue” bands like “Rana”, “FM de Zacapa” and “Brandly” among others, and even before that our parents and grandparents listened to “marimba” every time lunch was serve or on Sundays. Now please don’t get me wrong I love our National Instrument, I think it is one of the most beautiful, unique and representative sound I’ve ever heard but times changed and our generation (and by our I mean babies born on the 70’s) like and listen to other types of sounds.

Ok, let’s go back to business, shall we? Bands like Alux Nahual, that means “the elf’s spirit”, opened the door for so many different bands

that followed. Who can forget screaming and jumping with the sound of “Fiesta Privada” (Private party) or “Duende” (Elf ) and crying and sighting with “Mujer” (woman) “Libre Sentimiento” (Free feeling) and “Vuelve” (come back), songs that were a MUST on any party or quinceañeras parties back in the 80’s. Then the Heavy Metal band “Guerreros del Metal” (Metal warriors) and Rock Pop bands like Radio Viejo with songs like “angel” were the spearhead for more new bands like “Viernes Verde” (Green Friday) 1,992 and “Bohemia Suburbana” (Suburban Boheme) 1,992 that changed the Guatemalan music scenery forever with songs like “Peces e Iguanas” and “Estadío” which still anthems among youth even today.

Concert ever held in our country named “Libertad de Expresión” (Freedom of speech) where almost all rock and metal bands presented their latest singles, it is a shame that it only happened once. But since 1,999 Omar Méndez from Viernes Verde organized a yearly festival called “La Garra Chapina” that started in La Bodeguita and have been a success ever since.

Later came “La Tona” 1,994, “Fábulas Aticas” 1,995, “Los Ultimos adictos” 1,996, “Toba”, “Extinción” and “Golpes Bajos” 1,995-7, representing Xela were: “Sexto Estado”, “Empatía”, “Escalón”, and recently “Viento en Contra”, “El Clubo” and many others.

In 1,994 I had the privileged and the honor of attending one of the greatest National

But with all and all, I have to say that these bands have created a sound that we as a community can identify and feel proud of, a sound that we can say its part of our identity, that is us Guatemalans who will identify and recognize wherever we go. Well done artists.

Este informe analiza la violencia a la que los defensores de las mujeres transgénero [1] se ven expuestos en Latinoamérica y la impunidad de la que gozan los perpetradores… El informe presenta tres descubrimientos. Primeramente, los testimonios y eventos que describen revelan la naturaleza sistemática y el alcance de las violaciones de derechos humanos cometidas contra los defensores de los derechos humanos, transexuales y otras mujeres transgénero por parte de agentes del Estado. Estas violaciones de derechos, que incluyen ejecuciones extrajudiciales, tortura, tratos crueles, inhumanos y degradantes y detenciones arbitrarias; se extienden más allá del titular de delitos de odio, etiqueta con la que tales casos son generalmente clasificados, y el contexto de violencia generalizada que existe en muchos países de América Latina. Alrededor del 80 por ciento de las activistas transgénero entrevistadas reportaron haber sido víctimas de violencia o amenazas contra su integridad física supuestamente proveniente de agentes estatales.

En su segunda conclusión, el informe muestra que la penetración de la transfobia, es decir, el miedo o el odio hacia las personas transgénero, a través de las estructuras del Estado en todos los niveles, está facilitando un clima sistemático de impunidad con respecto a violaciones de derechos humanos cometidas contra activistas transgénero y mujeres transexuales. El informe presenta la evidencia de esa impunidad que se manifiesta en una cultura de silencio que impide la presentación de denuncias, la falta de un enfoque diferenciado cuando

COVER STORY se trata de estos casos, la ineficacia del sistema de justicia, la existencia de leyes discriminatorias y la falta de legislación en materia de identidad de género. Aunque fue difícil encontrar datos oficiales sobre casos procesados a través del sistema de justicia sobre personas trans asesinadas, las organizaciones de la sociedad civil han aportado datos convincentes: de acuerdo a activistas colombianos, 60 mujeres transgénero fueron asesinadas entre 2005 y 2012 sin que una sola persona enfrentara la justicia por esos crímenes. En el mismo período, 35 personas transexuales fueron asesinadas en Guatemala, con un solo responsable ante la justicia. En Honduras, en los casos sobre los 61 asesinatos de Lesbianas, Gays, Bisexuales, Transexuales e Intersexuales (LGBTI) reportados entre 2008 y 2011, sólo diez personas fueron llevadas a juicio, ninguno por la muerte de mujeres transexuales, a pesar del hecho de que este último representó dos tercios de los casos. El análisis realizado en este informe muestra que la impunidad que rodea a la violación de los derechos de los activistas transgénero y otras mujeres transgénero no se debe exclusivamente a la impunidad generalizada que existe en varios países de América Latina, pero es en gran parte motivada por la transfobia.

La tercera conclusión del reporte refiere que los defensores transgénero de derechos humanos en América Latina están en riesgo extremo de ser sometidos a violaciones de derechos humanos, un riesgo que está aumentado de manera exponencial en el contexto del trabajo sexual. El noventa y cinco por ciento de los defensores transgénero de derechos humanos entrevistados combina su activismo con el trabajo sexual. En aproximadamente el 90 por ciento de los casos tratados en este informe, la violencia denunciada se relaciona con el trabajo sexual. En América Latina, la violencia y la intimidación a la que las mujeres transgénero son sometidas y la impunidad con que se cometen estos crímenes, socavan los esfuerzos para garantizar que los servicios de prevención, tratamiento, atención y apoyo les alcancen, lo cual es paradójico, pues es la población con mayor prevalencia del VIH.

The Night is Another Country

El informe recomienda que las autoridades del Estado en América Latina, la Organización de los Estados Americanos, las Naciones Unidas, sus Estados miembros y los organismos especializados y las organizaciones de la sociedad civil se unan para combatir la impunidad, violencia y discriminación que sufren los activistas transgénero. Insta a que todos los casos de violaciones de derechos humanos, crímenes de odio y discriminación presuntamente cometidos contra mujeres transgénero sean investigados, enjuiciados y castigados. Asimismo, insta a la comunidad internacional a que controle específicamente los derechos humanos de las mujeres transexuales en América Latina y, en el marco de sus respectivos mandatos, para expresar públicamente sus preocupaciones y recomendaciones.

Por último, se recomienda que las organizaciones de la sociedad civil que trabajan con organizaciones de mujeres transexuales monitoreen y hagan público este problema, al compartir sus experiencias de promoción, elaboración de estrategias institucionales y fomentar la creación de asociaciones para defender y promover los derechos humanos de las mujeres transexuales.

This report analyzes the violence to which transgender[1] women human rights defenders[2] are subjected in Latin American countries and the impunity enjoyed by the perpetrators of such violence....The report presents three findings. Firstly, the testimonies and events it describes reveal the systematic nature and scope of the human rights violations committed against transgender human rights defenders and other transgender women by State actors. These rights violations, which include extrajudicial executions, torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and arbitrary detentions, extend beyond both the heading of hate crime, the label under which such cases are usually categorized, and the context of widespread violence that exists in many countries of Latin America.

Around 80 per cent of the transgender activists interviewed reported having been subjected to violence or threats to their physical integrity allegedly emanating from State actors.

As its second finding, the report shows that the penetration of transphobia, namely fear or hatred of transgender people, across State structures at every level, is facilitating a similarly systematic climate of impunity with regard to human rights violations committed against transgender activists and other transgender women. The report presents evidence of such impunity which manifests itself in a culture of silence that impedes the filing of complaints, a failure to adopt a differentiated approach when dealing with such cases, ineffectiveness in the justice system, the existence of discriminatory legislation and the absence of legislation on gender identity. Although it was difficult to find official data on cases of murdered transgender people processed

through the justice system, civil society organizations have provided compelling data: according to Colombian activists, 60 transgender women were murdered between 2005 and 2012 without a single person having been brought to justice. In the same period 35 transgender people were murdered in Guatemala, with only one person brought to justice. In Honduras, in the cases of 61 killings of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) individuals reported between 2008 and 2011, only ten people were brought to trial, none for the death of transgender women, despite the fact that the latter accounted for two thirds of the cases. The analysis provided in this report shows that the impunity surrounding the violation of the rights of transgender activists and other transgender women is not solely due to the general impunity that exists in several Latin American countries but is largely motivated

by transphobia.

The report’s third main finding is that transgender human rights defenders in Latin America are at extreme risk of being subjected to human rights violations, a risk that is exponentially increased in the context of sex work. Ninety-five per cent of the transgender human rights defenders interviewed combine their activism with sex work. In about 90 per cent of the cases covered in this report, the violence reported is related to sex work. This happens when the police take direct action against defenders because of their activism, making use of the sex work context to take reprisals against them. The case of the Colectivo Unidad Color Rosa de Honduras speaks volumes: of the seven members who set up the group in 2001, six have been murdered.

The report highlights other aspects of the vulnerability of transgender defenders that they share with other transgender women, such as facing discrimination from their families and the communities or ethnic groups to which they belong, and the violence used by maras and organized crime. These findings show that the national,

regional and universal measures and mechanisms established to protect human rights are failing in the case of transgender women..

The report concludes that, in the context of the generalized stigmatization, discrimination and violence these groups face, it is virtually impossible to provide an effective HIV response focused on the most-at-risk populations. In Latin America, the violence and intimidation to which transgender women are subjected and the impunity with which such crimes are committed, undermine efforts to ensure that HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services reach transgender women which, paradoxically, is the population with the highest HIV prevalence.

The report recommends that State authorities in Latin America, the Organization of American States, the United Nations, its member States and specialised agencies and civil society organizations join together to combat the impunity, violence and discrimination suffered by transgender activists. It calls for all cases of human rights violations, hate crimes and discrimination allegedly committed against transgender women to be investigated, prosecuted and punished. It also urges the international community to specifically monitor the human rights of transgender women in Latin America and, within the framework of their respective mandates, to publicly express their concerns and recommendations. Lastly, it recommends that civil society organizations work with transgender women’s organizations to monitor and make this issue public, by sharing their advocacy experiences, devising institutional strategies and encouraging the establishment of partnerships to defend and promote the human rights of transgender women.

Género Mujeres líderes y la lucha continua Melissa Vlach Las mujeres han enfrentado por mucho tiempo la desigualdad en Guatemala, esto puede ser visto aún desde el Popol Vuh, donde dos mujeres fueron enviadas, como herramientas para la guerra, usando sus cuerpos para engañar al enemigo, diciendo: si los veis a estos tres jóvenes desnudaos delante de ellos, y…si ellos desean vuestras caras, en verdad, daos a ellos. Y si no os dais, nosotros os mataremos”.

Esta lucha por los derechos de la mujer continúa hoy en día, y Sinergia No´j es parte de ese esfuerzo, esta organización fue fundada en 2006 y su sede está en la capital de Guatemala, trabajando con mujeres, jóvenes y otros grupos con conciencia social de diversas partes del país.

El trabajo de Sinergia No´j es proveer recursos y capacitación de liderazgo a los dirigentes de movimientos sociales en sus comunidades. Sus escuelas de formación brindan espacios para mujeres provenientes de diversos escenarios para reunirse y compartir experiencias. “ Porque ellas han trabajado por un largo tiempo, han obtenido muy buenos resultados, pero también han tenido situaciones que no han sido muy gratas”, explico Helen Barrientos.

Trasladando esas historias conjuntas, las participantes pueden re energizar y ganar nuevas ideas para su trabajo.

Hay mucho trabajo por hacer “yo creo que estamos detrás de un problema de violencia contra la mujer, un flagelo realmente, que no

es solo en Guatemala….Es en toda la región y es muy fuerte porque no solo las mujeres sufren violencia, sino que la población entera es quien la sufre.

Afirmo Patricia Ardon, Asesora y ex directora Ejecutiva del grupo. Ella explico que la violencia contra las mujeres es peor debido a la subordinación histórica, especialmente en el caso de las mujeres indígenas, debido también al racismo. Para hacer las cosas peor, el machismo es frecuentemente internalizado por las mujeres, haciéndoles creer que ellas son más débiles e inferiores que los hombres en muchas maneras.

Además existen altos niveles de impunidad por los crímenes contra las mujeres.

Barrientos explica que estos es debido no solo al alto número de casos asignados a los oficiales, sino también derivan de las actitudes de quienes están a cargo de ejecutar las leyes. El país tiene leyes, las cuales deben ser ejecutadas, afirmo “que parecía tan simple, pero no, porque cuando un operador de justicia pone en práctica una ley, también pone en práctica lo que cree de esta ley, lo que siente del problema, lo que significa para él el problema” por causa de estos pensamientos e ideologías de los operadores de justicia es que se afecta la aplicación de las leyes.

Barrientos además explico que las mujeres frecuentemente dudan en reportar crímenes cometidos contra ellas, porque ellas mismas se culpan de tales acciones, afirmo que “Re victimizan a las mujeres cuando llegan a poner una denuncia”. Por ejemplo un juez puede decirle a una mujer “¿Para qué anda en la calle?, por eso le pega su marido, quédese en su casa y nada le va a pasar”, esta clase de respuesta las desanima

Sin embargo hay muestras positivas de esta lucha, Ardon describe el incremento del liderazgo de las mujeres trabajando por igualdad de derechos, ella describe que “Por un lado [es] una situación muy dura, muy complicada, con mucha violencia y mucha opresión…Pero por otro lado también [hay] mucha fuerza, muchos nuevos liderazgos, muchas jóvenes” Además, las mujeres están denunciando con más frecuencia, los actos de violencia cometidos contra ellas durante el conflicto armado, Barrientos afirmo: “Es admirable lo que hacen”, sin embargo esas mujeres deben ser cuidadosas cuando están al frente, cubriendo sus rostros para esconder sus identidades a causa del potencial peligro que podrían obtener por sus declaraciones.

Women have long faced inequality in Guatemala. It can be seen in the Popol Vuh, when two women were sent as tools of war, to use their bodies to trick the enemy, being told “if you see the three youths, undress before them and…if they want to kiss your faces, really give yourselves to them. And if you don’t give yourselves to them, we will kill you.”

This struggle for women’s rights continues today, and Sinergia No’j is part of that effort.

The organization was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Guatemala City, working with women, youth, and other socially conscious groups from various parts of the country.

Sinergia No’j works by providing resources and leadership training to leaders of social movements in their communities. Their schools of formation provide spaces for women of diverse backgrounds to come together and share experiences. “Because they have worked for a long time, they have had very good results, but they’ve also had situations that were not very pleasant,” explained Helen Barrientos, title.

By bringing these stories together, the participants can reenergize and gain new ideas for their work.

And there is a lot of work to be done. “I believe that we are behind a problem of

violence against women, a scourge really, that’s not just Guatemala…It’s the whole region, and it’s very strong because not only women suffer from violence, but the entire population is suffering,” stated Patricia Ardón, advisor and former executive director of the group. She explained that violence against women is worse due to their historical subordination and especially in the case of indigenous women, due to racism as well.

To make things worse, the machismo is often internalized by women, making them believe that they are weaker and inferior in many ways.

Furthermore, there are high levels of impunity for crimes against women.

Barrientos explained that this is due not only to the high number of cases that individual officials must take on, but also to the attitudes of the individuals enforcing the laws. The country has laws, which should be enforced, she stated; “it seems so simple, but it’s not, because when a judicial official puts a law into practice, he also puts into practice what he believes about this law, what he feels about the problem, what the problem means to him.” Because of this, individuals’ beliefs and ideologies affect how the laws are enforced.

Barrientos further explained that women frequently hesitate to report crimes committed against them because they themselves are likely to be blamed for these actions. “They re-victimize women when they come to press charges,” she said. [“Revictimizan a las mujeres cuando llegan a poner una denuncia”]. For example, a judge might tell a woman, “Why are you going around in the street? That’s why your husband hit you. Stay at home and nothing will happen to you.” [“¿Para qué anda en la

calle? Por eso le pega su marido. Quédese en su casa y nada le va a pasar”]. This kind of response discourages women from seeking justice.

However, there are positive signs in this struggle. Ardón described the increasing leadership of women working for equal rights. “On one hand [it’s] a very hard, very complicated situation, with a lot of violence and oppression…But on the other hand [there’s] also a lot of strength, a lot of new leaders, a lot of young people,” she described.

In addition, women are coming forward with more frequency to denounce the violent acts committed against them during the armed conflict. “What they’re doing is admirable,” stated Barrientos. However, these women must be careful when they come forward, covering their faces to hide their identities because of the potential retribution that could follow their statements.

With each step forward, Sinergia No’j is continuing to work with women reclaiming their rights, supporting leaders to spread this cause to others and continue with their efforts.

Tema de Portada ‘Ser indígena’ en Guatemala Elisabet Dueholm Rasch Maya, k´iche, indígena. El estado, las fuerzas de la guerrilla, el Movimiento Maya y las iglesias católicas y protestantes en Guatemala han atribuido diferentes características a los indígenas y los han imaginado en muchas formas estereotipadas. Privación económica, exclusión política, la inaccesibilidad de los servicios públicos junto con la negativa interpretación de ´la cultura´ como el lenguaje y el traje, han creado imágenes de que las personas indígenas son retrogradas, borrachas, apartadas, pobres, sin embargo paradójicamente son parte de un glorioso pasado, los constructores de las magnificas ruinas de Tikal. Recientemente el movimiento Maya ha comenzado a reinterpretar los patrones locales culturales y se han adueñado de ellos de acuerdo a la creación de un reconocimiento político. Al mismo tiempo el significado de ´ser indígena´ es construido en los procesos de dinámica local de negociación e información de los sectores rurales-urbanos de género y de clase. La forma en que los indígenas le dan significado a su identidad es formandose en interacciones entre procesos de exclusión, discriminación y reivindicación y por el otro lado en procesos personales y locales a lo que ellos llaman ´auto determinación´ Hoy en día muchos académicos así como activistas, distinguen tres ciclos de la conquista de la población indígena guatemalteca: primero el tiempo de la colonización española, Segundo la entrada local e internacional del capitalismo en Guatemala y en las comunidades indígenas, a través de la economía del café y el tercero con el conflicto armado de 36 años (1960-1996). La convergencia de la contrainsurgencia y el racismo dejo una brutal campaña militar de genocidio contra la población indígena, entre 1978 y 1938 (ver

COVER STORY [2], entre otras). Más recientemente la invasión extranjera de campañas en búsqueda de otros recursos en el territorio indígena, se ha agregado como el cuarto ciclo de la conquista.

La identidad y los derechos de los indígenas están ahora reconocidos en convenios internacionales y en la legislación como el ‘acuerdo de identidad’ (Parte de los acuerdos de paz que fue concluido en 1996) y el convenio 169 de la organización internacional de trabajo, que es el convenio de los pueblos indígenas [2]. En 1985 la Constitución estableció que el Estado ‘reconoce, respeta y promueve sus formas de vida, costumbres, tradiciones y formas de organización social, el uso del traje indígena por hombres y mujeres, así como sus idiomas y dialectos’ [3]. Como si esto pudiera encerrarse en un solo concepto. A pesar de los grandes avances y de la importancia del reconocimiento de los derechos de los indígenas en documentos legales, se hace importante cuestionar el ‘convenio’ la forma de definir quién y que es indígena- .como si esto pudiera encasillarse fácilmente. En realidad la definición de indígena, cambia de un lugar a otro en diferentes momentos en el tiempo.

En Quetzaltenango por ejemplo, hay una gran diferencia entre el significado de indígena en las áreas rurales y el significado de indígena/ maya en las zonas urbanas. Cuando le pregunte a Ada una habitante de la zona 1 que pertenece a la clase media de Quetzaltenango, lo que la identidad Maya significa para ella, ella dijo ‘yo me atrevería a decirte Yo soy Maya K’iche de Quetzaltenango y la historia de mi gente es algo magnifico’ esta es la posición de mucha gente que entreviste en el área urbana de Xela. Su enfoque en la continuidad de marcos culturales como de la vestimenta indígena, idioma, expresión cultural y el racismo de la elite ladina cuando es identificado como un Maya K’iche. Sin ignorar el hecho de que ellos han tratado con el racismo diariamente, es importante darse cuenta que la mayor parte de la población bien educada pertenece a la clase media.

Oscar Velázquez es extraordinario en este sentido. Oscar viene de una muy respetada familia Maya k’iche de Xela. Aunque él pertenece a una familia muy rica, el sufre discriminación y fue excluido de espacios sociales y políticos. A pesar de no hablar K’iche, no haberse casado con una mujer indígena, y que su hija no use el traje, el es identificado fuertemente como un Maya K’iche y muestra gran orgullo en la herencia de la cultura maya, para él esta es una identificación a través de la cual las expresiones culturales se convierten en política, el lucha contra el racismo mediante la participación activa, las políticas locales y mediante la búsqueda de nuevas formas para la continuidad de la constitución cultural.

Solamente a unos kilómetros de distancia, la identidad de los habitantes indígenas de las áreas rurales es concebida por el poder de las relaciones entre las áreas urbanas y rurales así como las limitantes económicas, pues para ellos ser indígena tiene que ver con ser pobre, ‘ellos nos llaman indios porque nosotros venimos de la montaña’. Don Ángel un líder comunitario del perímetro del área urbana dijo (cuando le hice la misma pregunta que le había hecho a Ada) las personas indígenas del área rural, generalmente son mas tangentes acerca de su posición socioeconómica que sobre conservar expresiones culturales de la identidad Maya K’iche como el idioma, la vestimenta y la espiritualidad.

Esto también pasa a primer plano en la forma en que Delia le da significado de ‘ser indígena’ Delia viene de una familia de líderes comunitarios. Los hombres están entre los más importantes líderes de la comunidad y las mujeres practican ceremonias mayas para los visitantes, en el altar detrás de la casa. En un cuarto espacioso, ellos frecuentemente realizan encuentros comunitarios, a pesar de las muchas referencias en su casa al seguimiento de la cultura, ella hizo hincapié en su situación económica y la experiencia de discriminación como un elemento muy importante de su identidad indígena.

‘Being Indigenous’ in Guatemala

of genocide against the indigenous population between 1978 and 1983 (see [2], among many others). More recently, the invasion of foreign companies in search for gold and other resources in indigenous territories have been added as the fourth cycle of conquest.

Indigenous identity and indigenous rights are now recognized in international agreements and national legislation such as the ‘Accord on Identity’ (part of the Peace Accords that were concluded in 1996) and the 169 ILO Convention on indigenous rights [2]. The 1985-Constitution establishes that the State ‘recognizes, respects and promotes their ways of life, customs, traditions, forms of social organization, the use of indigenous dress by men and women, languages and dialects’ [3]. Notwithstanding the great achievement and importance of recognising indigenous rights in legal documents, it is important to question the ‘fixed’ way they define who and what is indigenous – as if this could be accommodated into neat, closed pockets. In reality meanings of indigeneity change from place to place and in different moments in time.

Maya, K’iche, indio, indigenous. The State, the guerrilla forces, the Maya Movement and Catholic and Protestant churches in Guatemala have all ascribed different characteristics to indigenous peoples and imagined them in many stereotyped ways.

Economic deprivation, political exclusion, the inaccessibility of public services together with negative interpretations of ‘the cultural stuff’ such as language and traje, have created images of indigenous peoples as backward, drunk, isolated, poor and, paradoxically, as part of a glorious past, the creators of the magnificent ruins of Tikal. Recently the Maya Movement has begun to reinterpret local cultural markers and has appropriated them in order to make a political statement. At the same time, meanings of ‘being indigenous’ are constructed in dynamic local processes of negotiation and informed by ruralurban divisions, gender and class. The way indigenous peoples give meaning to their identity is shaped by interactions between processes of exclusion, discrimination and reindivication on the one hand and local and personal processes of what we could call ‘self-making’ [4] on the other.

Today many scholars as well as activists distinguish three cycles of conquest of the Guatemalan indigenous population: first, the time of Spanish colonization, second, the entrance of local and international capitalism in Guatemala and indigenous communities through the coffee economy, and three, the 36-year internal conflict (19601996). The confluence of counterinsurgency and racism led to a brutal military campaign

In Quetzaltenango for example, there is quite a big difference between the meaning of indigenous in the rural areas and the meaning of indigenous and/or Maya in the urban zones. When I asked Ada, inhabitant of zone 1 and belonging to Quetzaltenango’s middle class, what her Mayan identity meant to her, she said ‘I would dare to say to you: I am a Maya K’iche from Quetzaltenango and the history of my people is something magnificent’. This standpoint toward indigeneity is common to many people that I interviewed in urban Xela. They focus on the continuity of cultural markers, such as the traditional indigenous dress, language, cultural expression, and the racism of the Ladino elite when identifying as Maya K’iche. Without ignoring the fact that they have to deal with racism on a daily basis, it is important to realize that they for

the most part well-educated and belong to the middle class.

Oscar Velazquez is exemplary in this sense.

Oscar comes from a very respected Maya K’iche family of Xela. Although he belongs to a very wealthy family, he suffered discrimination and was excluded from social and political spaces. He does not speak K’iche, did not marry an indigenous woman, and his daughters do not use the Quetzaltenango traje. He does, however, identify strongly as Maya K’iche, and show great pride in Maya cultural heritage. For him, it is an identification though which cultural expressions become political; he fights racism by participating actively in local politics and by looking for new ways to constitute cultural continuity.

Only a few kilometers away, the identity of indigenous inhabitants of rural areas is shaped by the power relations between urban and rural areas as well as economic deprivation. For them, ‘being indigenous’ has to do with ‘being poor’. ‘They call us indios because we come from de countryside (montaña),’ Don Angel, a community leader of the urban outskirts, said, when I asked him the same question as I had asked Ada. COVER STORY practican usos y costumbre que son parte de la ley y espiritualidad indígena, la espiritualidad Maya (especialmente el respeto a los ancestros) es el principal indicador de su identidad indígena, ‘los Mayas son aquellos quienes queman copal en las montañas’, otros principalmente los católicos y evangélicos dirían esto sobre ellos. El copal es el incienso usado en las ceremonias Mayas.

Muchas personas en el pueblo se autodenominan como indígenas, consideran que los usos y costumbres están conectados a la espiritualidad Maya como un ‘atraso’, muchos de los críticos de los usos y costumbres son evangélicos, un buen ejemplo es Don Mauricio. Es un profesor que se autodenomina indígena viene de una escuela primaria del área rural, el organiza un gran número de eventos deportivos y es pastor de una iglesia evangélica, siendo un importante miembro de la comunidad, cuando le pregunte quienes eran los mayas desde su punto de vista, el me dijo: ‘los Mayas definitivamente no existen’. Don Mauricio busca cambios y desarrollo en la base de la educación y ha participado en actividades que le permiten alcanzar sus metas: el formo parte en el Comité pro mejoramiento y organiza grupos de futbol en el pueblo. El desprecia toda forma tradicional que exprese relación con los costumbristas quien desde su punto de vista explotan a la población indígena.

Hay muchas diferencias entre la construcción de la identidad nacional y local y una Mirada más cerca también revela que hay muchas caras de la identidad indígena en un nivel local, nadie posee el poder para establecer los términos de pertenencia a la población Indígena, no a nivel nacional, ni a nivel local.

Sin embargo es importante que existan los espacios de discusión de lo que significa ser indígena para examinar lo que esto implica para la construcción de la democracia, esto juntamente con el hecho de que diferentes grupos de indígenas participen en este

debate, muestra que el ‘indígena’ o ´Maya’ no son conceptos menos útiles en su lugar, son las categorías más destacadas que representan a los actores de vital importancia en la sociedad guatemalteca.

This also comes to the fore in the way Delia gives meaning to ‘being indigenous’. Delia comes from a family of community leaders.

The men are among the most important leaders of the community and the women practice Maya ceremonies for visitors at the altar behind the house. In a spacious room they often host community meetings.

Notwithstanding the many references in her home to cultural continuity, Delia stressed her economic position and experience of discrimination as a very important element of her indigenous identity.

The meaning of indigenous identity again changes dramatically when we travel into the green mountains of the Western Highlands. In the village where I did fieldwork for twelve months over a period of two years, religious identity shaped the meaning of ‘indigenous identity’ and ‘indigenous rights’. For many costumbristas, persons that practice uses and customs that are part of indigenous law and spirituality, Maya spirituality (especially respect for the ancestors) is the primary marker of their indigenous identity. ‘The Mayas are those who burn copal in the mountains’, others, mainly Catholics and Evangelicals, would say about them. Copal is incense used at Maya ceremonies.

Many people in the village that do selfidentify as ‘indigenous’ consider uses and customs that are connected to Maya spirituality as ‘backward’. Many of the criticasters of the usos y costumbres are evangelical. A good example here is Don Mauricio. As teacher and self-identified indígena at the urban primary school, organizer of numerous sports events, and pastor of an evangelical church, he is an important member of the community. When I asked him who, from his point of view, the Mayas are, he said: ‘The Mayas definitely do not exist’. Don Mauricio seeks change and

development on the basis of education and has participated in activities that aim at achieving this goal: he took part in the ‘Proimprovement Committee’ and organized football clubs in the village. He despises every form of ‘traditional’ expression related to the costumbristas, who, in his view, exploit the indigenous population.

There are differences between national and local indigenous identity constructions, and a closer look also reveals that there are the many faces of indigenous identity at the local level. Nobody possesses the power to set the final terms for belonging to ‘the’ indigenous population, not at the national level, nor at the local level. It is, however, important that there exists the space to discuss what indigenous means and to examine what this entails for constituting democracy. This, together with the fact that different indigenous groups participate in this debate, shows that ‘Indigenous’ or ‘Maya’ are not useless concepts or terms. Instead they are salient categories that represent vitally important actors in Guatemalan society.

Identidades demasiado altas de voluntarios extranjeros Laurel Carlton

Conocí cientos de voluntarios extranjeros durante el año y medio que trabaje como la Coordinadora del Programa de Voluntariado de Entre mundos.

A pesar de sus diversos antecedentes la mayoría compartía rasgos comunes tales como: hablar un poco menos que español intermedio, buscaban una experiencia de corto plazo (menos de 8 semanas), nunca antes habían voluntariado y tenían un poco (o nada) de experiencia en el campo hacia el cual querían contribuir. Sin embargo ellos también tenían altas expectativas de sus habilidades como voluntarios las cuales en muchos casos condujeron a una idea exagerada de su propia utilidad.

Incontables voluntarios hicieron grandes promesas a proyectos, solo para darse cuenta que los cambios no serian ni fáciles ni rápidos.

Otros asumieron que ellos sabían mas e ignoraron las instrucciones de sus organizaciones; un voluntario redirigió a una cooperativa de tejedores, pues solamente vendió a través de su cuenta en Paypal, indicando que esto era “más eficiente” y que el controlaba los pagos. Un chico de 21 años de edad prometió a una comunidad que su proyecto sería trasladado a la reforestación sin consultarle a la organización, otra voluntaria para un programa de nutrición de niños ignoro la lista de compra que le

fue dada, porque decidió que las tortillas y los frijoles “no eran lo suficientemente nutritivos” A pesar de sus buenas intenciones supuestos como esos a veces llevan a estos conflictos: los voluntarios se sienten menospreciados y las organizaciones sienten que ellos han perdido tiempo y recursos, atestiguando esto, un pensamiento me bombardeo: que es acerca de nuestra identidad como extranjeros ¿que nos hace pensar que somos demasiados útiles en el desarrollo de países, cuando tenemos un muy pequeño entendimiento del contexto local?

Aunque es posible, me gustaría pensar que su comportamiento no se refrena en las ideas de arrogancia o racismo neocolonial derivadas de la “ carga del hombre blanco” Dejando la arrogancia de lado, ¿podría nuestra ayuda ser sobreestimada debido a la ingenua ignorancia acerca de la profundidad compleja de la pobreza cíclica? Ciertamente nosotros tenemos graves problemas sociales en nuestros países –pobreza, falta de viviendas y discriminación racial, abismales condiciones para nuestros indígenas- pero acá estamos algunos de nosotros con el lujo de realizar un voluntariado en el extranjero como si nunca se nos hubieran presentado estos desafíos antes.

Organizaciones como World Vision y CARE pueden contribuir a nuestra ingenuidad con amplias campañas de difusión de los donantes, con temas complejos como la pobreza y el hambre que pueden ser resueltos, sustituyendo nuestro café diario por una donación- por solo un dólar diarioademás muchas agencias de ubicación de voluntarios y organizaciones dependen de estos voluntarios y de sus donaciones para su sustento económico, invirtiéndose así perpetuamente las idea sobre la utilidad de los extranjeros.

Overestimating Our Worth?

Inflated Identities of Foreign Volunteers Laurel Carlton I met hundreds of foreign volunteers during the year and a half that I worked as EntreMundos’ Volunteer Programs Coordinator.

Despite their diverse backgrounds, the majority shared common traits: they spoke less than intermediate Spanish, were looking for a short-term placement (less than 8 weeks), had never volunteered before, and had little (or no) experience in the field that they wanted to contribute to. Nonetheless, they also had high expectations of their abilities as volunteers which, in many cases, led to an inflated sense of their own helpfulness.

Countless volunteers made grandiose promises to projects only to leave upon realizing that real change was neither quick nor easy. Others assumed they knew best and disregarded their organizations’ instructions. One volunteer redirected a weaving cooperative’s online sales through his Paypal account, stating that it was “more efficient” that he control payments. A 21-year-old promised a community that his project would relocate reforestation without consulting the organization. A volunteer for a children’s nutrition program ignored the shopping list she was given because she decided that tortillas and beans were “not nutritious enough.”

Despite their good intentions, assumptions like these sometimes led to conflicts: volunteers felt underappreciated, and organizations felt that they had wasted time and resources. Witnessing this, a thought

struck me: What is it about our identities as foreigners that makes us think that we are so helpful in developing countries, when we have so little understanding of the local context?

Although it’s possible, I would like to think that their behaviour did not stem from arrogance or racist neocolonial ideas about the “white man’s burden.”

Arrogance aside, could our tendency to overestimate our helpfulness stem from naïve ignorance about the complex depth of cyclical poverty? Certainly, we have grave social problems in our own countries – poverty, homelessness, and racial discrimination, abysmal conditions for our indigenous peoples – but those of us with the luxury of volunteering abroad likely have never experience these challenges first hand.

Organizations like WorldVision and CARE may contribute to our naivety, with widespread donor outreach campaigns that complex issues like poverty and hunger can be resolved by substituting our daily coffee for a donation – “For only a dollar a day…”

Further, many volunteer placement agencies and organizations depend on volunteers’ donations for their financial sustainability, and are thus invested in perpetuating ideas about foreigners’ helpfulness.

Whatever the reasons, some foreign volunteers demonstrate a clear tendency to overestimate their own worth despite a lack of contextual knowledge, skills, and Spanish level. It is therefore fundamental that we reflect critically on our positions as foreigners. Although we may have time, energy, and new ideas to contribute, our limited understanding of cultural context make respect and humility key characteristics for any positive contributions as volunteers.

Could this tendency be rooted in some psychological barrier? A 2010 study by the University of Toronto Scarborough found that study participants demonstrated significantly less neural firing when observing people of other races, as compared to watching people of their own racial group.

To borrow a voluntourism slogan, let’s ‘Be The Change’ – but let’s acknowledge our own limitations. Let’s be open to the idea that we do not, in fact, know what’s best.

Maybe then we can actually be helpful.

Perhaps in seeing Guatemalans as fundamentally different, many foreigners struggle to identify with the very people we purport to help, and thus overlook our common humanity.

cultura Más Allá del Traje: cómo se presenta la identidad en las mujeres indígenas Rebecca Nelson-Jacobs Gabriela es una niña precoz de seis años que ha decidido que no quiere ponerse su traje (vestimenta Maya). Dice que pesa demasiado y que le aprieta. Su familia vive en un apartamento en Xela durante la semana, dónde habla español y se viste de blusas con la cara de Dora la Exploradora, y regresa a su casa en Sololá los fines de semana, dónde habla Kaqchikel con su familia.

Visité a su familia para la Semana Santa, y me querían enseñar su colección de pequeños trajes: algunos de ellos son hechos de mano o comprados por su mamá, que es de traje y quiere pasar sus tradiciones a su hija. Otros son de otras partes de Guatemala, regalos de los amigos y parientes de su mamá.

Juntas hacemos seis combinaciones de huipiles y cortes que combinan bien. “No Rebe, no es así,” me dice autoritariamente cuando intento a atar el corte a la cintura.

Sabe exactamente cómo doblarlo para que le quede bien y no se caiga. Desfila orgullosamente a la cocina para hacer un modelaje para su familia y el efecto es precioso, pero para ella, los trajes son solo para ocasiones especiales.

A través de su traje tradicional, los Mayas representan información sobre su identidad, incluso su origen geográfico, género, estado

culture civil, edad, y posición social.

Aunque la mayoría de los hombres han empezado a llevar jeans y camisas, tal vez porque han tenido más contacto con ladinos y extranjeros y han experimentado más discriminación por sus trajes, las mujeres mayas han mantenido su vestimenta tradicional. Las niñas mayas generalmente aprenden a tejer a los diez años. Cuando empecé a aprender a tejer, me dijeron que también me convertía en mujer.

En muchos casos, las mujeres mayas tejen sus propios huipiles y compran los otros componentes de sus trajes en el mercado. Aunque cada diseño tradicional viene de un pueblo específico, las tejedoras pueden trabajar entre los parámetros con diseños marcados por sus comunidades para expresar sus identidades personales. Tampoco debemos simplificar demasiado la relación entre huipiles y lugares: las mujeres se pueden vestir con huipiles de los lugares dónde crecieron o dónde tienen parientes.

El traje es una señal tan fuerte de la identidad maya en Guatemala que quitarse el traje se percibe como una manera de repudiar su identidad. En su lugar de trabajo en Xela, María suele vestirse con suéteres, blusas suaves, y faldas largas. Se siente obligada a explicar a los visitantes porque no se pone su traje: “Tuve un accidente y me lastimé las costillas. Sólo me lo pongo para eventos especiales. Pero sé tejer perfectamente, hablo el idioma maya Mam, y convivo mucho con mi gente indígena.” Para ella, estos hechos constituyen la prueba irrefutable de quién es y de dónde es. No es Maya por lo

que lleva, ni por lo que hace para sobrevivir, ni por cómo habla, ni con quien convive, sino por todas estas cosas, el montón de detalles que forman su experiencia vivida.

Guatemaltecas como Gabriela y María toman decisiones complicadas de cómo presentarse a través de su ropa. En Guatemala, las mujeres generalmente clasifican a otras mujeres como “de corte” o “de vestido”; sin embargo, cambiar la identidad no es tan fácil cómo quitarse la ropa. Las mujeres mayas tejen sus identidades con todas las partes de sus vidas. Saber cómo tejer y ponerse sus obras son partes importantes de la identidad, pero identidad étnica y de género es más que una lista de características.

Gabriela is a precocious six-year old who has decided that she doesn’t like to wear her traje (traditional Mayan dress). She says that it’s too heavy and pinches her uncomfortably.

Her family lives in an apartment in Xela during the week, where she speaks Spanish and wears Dora the Explorer tee-shirts, and goes home to Solola on the weekends, where she speaks Kaqchikel with her extended family.

I’m visiting her family for Holy Week and she wants to show me her collection of tiny trajes: some of them were hand-made or bought by her mother, who wears traje and wants to pass her traditions on to her daughter. Others are from other areas of Guatemala, presents from her mother’s friends and relatives. We make six colorcoordinated outfits. “No Rebe, it’s not like that,” she tells me authoritatively when I try to bundle the corte around her waist.

She knows exactly how to fold it so that it fits her body and doesn’t fall down. She proudly marches into the kitchen to put on a fashion show for her family and the effect is adorable, but for her, the outfits are for special occasions only.

Through their traditional traje, Mayans represent information about their identity, including their geographic origin, gender, marital status, age group, and socioeconomic status. While most men have taken to wearing jeans and t-shirts, perhaps because they have more contact with outsiders

and have experienced m o r e discrimination for their dress, Mayan women have maintained their traditional dress.

Mayan girls usually learn to weave from their mothers when they are about 10 years old.

When I began learning to Photo: Melissa Vlach weave, they told me that I, too, was becoming a woman. In many cases, Mayan women weave their huipiles (traditional blouses) themselves and buy the other parts of their traje at the market. While traditional designs are specific to individual pueblos, weavers can work within the design parameters set by their community traditions to express their personal identities. We also shouldn’t over-simplify the connection between huipiles and places: women may wear garments from areas where they grew up or where they have family members.

Traje is such a strong marker of Mayan identity in Guatemala that taking it off can be seen as a way of disavowing your identity. At her workplace in Xela, Maria usually wears sweaters, soft blouses, and long skirts. She feels compelled to explain to visitors why she doesn’t wear her traje: “I had an accident and broke my ribs. Since then, it has hurt me too much to wear my belt every day. I only put it on for special occasions. But I know how to weave perfectly, I speak the Mayan language Mam, and I live together with my indigenous people.” For her, these constitute incontrovertible proof of who she is and where she’s from. She is not Mayan because of what she wears, what she does

to make a living, how she speaks, or who she lives with, but because of all these things, the accumulation of details that make up her lived experience.

Guatemalan women like Gabriela and Maria make complex choices about how to present themselves through their dress. In Guatemala, women usually classify other women as “de corte” (they wear indigenous dress), or “de vestido” (they wear Western clothing), but changing one’s identity is not as simple as taking off a piece of clothing. Mayan women weave together their identities from all of the pieces of their lives. Knowing how to weave and wearing your own work are important parts of Mayan women’s identity, but ethnic and gender identity is more than a checklist of characteristics.

EM magazine: Why was this initiative undertaken in Quetzaltenango?

Revista EM:¿por qué se da esta iniciativa en Quetzaltenango?

Blanca: porque acá vivimos, es una ciudad multicultural, muy activa socialmente y que permite poner en marcha iniciativas que incidan social y económicamente sobre las personas.

Sebastián: Fundamentalmente porque acá vivimos y Blanca tenía experiencia práctica en ello. Investigando y comprendiendo las necesidades existentes de las personas y comunidades, tanto rurales como urbanas, de nuevas opciones frente al sistema capitalista neoliberal imperante en los países del Norte y que está penetrando con fuerza en Guatemala, vimos la oportunidad de promover la iniciativa del Banco del Tiempo Xela. De este modo fomentamos y educamos en valores: solidaridad, cooperación, compartir, acompañamiento mutuo, etc.; que se van perdiendo en las ciudades y, al mismo tiempo, ponemos barreras a un modelo socio-económico.

Revista EM: ¿cómo funcionará el proyecto en Xela?

Blanca: El Club UNESCO-HERITAGE auspició inicialmente la iniciativa y el 7 de diciembre la presentamos en la Asamblea General de PECOSOL (Plataforma de Economía Solidaria de Centroamérica) - Capítulo de Guatemala, el Club UNESCO-HERITAGE. La intervención tuvo una buena acogida porque está en línea con los proyectos de Economía Solidaria, Desarrollo Endógeno, de empoderamiento, por ende, de las personas y pueblos, y, en definitiva, de Desarrollo Humano y Sostenible y, aún más, de las Ideas del Buen Vivir (sumak kawsay).

Revista EM: Guatemala es un país con una historia difícil, la gente se siente reacia a participar u organizarse ¿cómo planean involucrar a más personas?

Sebastián: En Guatemala hemos construido y estamos construyendo relaciones de confianza con los diferentes actores al desarrollo locales e internacionales para difundir la iniciativa y que sean ellos los

De esta manera es más sencillo y rápido transmitir la filosofía de funcionamiento de los Bancos del Tiempo, generar Capital Social y mostrar la oportunidad que supone compartir y colaborar, ya que permite reducir el gasto doméstico con lo que la economía familiar se ve favorecida. Construyendo así otros mundos alternativos en el que las relaciones humanas, en comunión con la Naturaleza y el Todo, prevalezcan a los intereses meramente económico-comerciales, cortoplacistas y reduccionistas inherentes al modelo capitalista neoliberal.

Blanca: Para llegar a la gente estamos apostando por el ocio alternativo, pues a través de él las personas van ganando confianza las unas con las otras y se van facilitando los intercambios futuros y generando Capital Social. Con diferentes actividades de grupo como: taller de risoterapia, carrera de bicis disfrazados (alley cat), visita a una planta recicladora, conferencias (culturas indígenas de América y Centroamérica, desnutrición en Guatemala..., cineforum, etc. En conclusión, realizar actividades lúdicas pero con un trasfondo más profundo en temas de ecología, educación en valores, igualdad de género, etc. La idea es que mediante el ocio alternativo se llegue a más gente.

Revista EM: ¿Cómo funciona un Banco del Tiempo?

Sebastián: El origen de los Bancos del Tiempo son las redes de trueque LETS que surgieron en los años 60. Estas redes de trueque evolucionaron posteriormente a los actuales Bancos del Tiempo, en los que ya no hay trueques recíprocos únicamente entre personas, si no que se pueden realizar intercambios con todos los integrantes

del mismo sin que sea necesaria una reciprocidad directa. En todo caso, cada Banco del Tiempo es diferente a los demás porque tiene que ser un reflejo de sus usuarios y adaptarse a sus necesidades, capacidades, disponibilidad, etc.

Blanca: Es un grupo de personas que se une para intercambiar conocimientos, destrezas, habilidades e incluso bienes. Lo ideal es que todas las personas implicadas se hagan cargo de la gestión del Banco del Tiempo, y que todos cooperemos con el resto para su buen funcionamiento.

Sebastian: Principally because we live here and Blanca has had practical experience here. While researching and identifying the existing needs of people and communities, both rural and urban, for new options within the capitalist neoliberal systems of the North, we saw the opportunity to promote the Time Bank in Xela. Through this model we can strengthen and educate about its basic principles: solidarity, cooperation, sharing, mutual accompaniment, etc; principles that we are losing in our cities. At the same time, we can impede the growth of a socio-economic model to which we are oppposed.

Club. The presentation was well received because it is in keeping with existing projects based on economic solidarity, internal development , the empowerment of people and communities and in essence, of sustainable human development and the ideas of the Good Life (sumak kawsay).

EM magazine: Guatemala is a country with a difficult past, where people still feel reluctance to participate and organize openly in society. How do you plan to involve more people?

Sebastián: In Guatemala, we have built and continue to build trusting relationships with different actors involved in local and international development to spread to the word about the initiative so that it is these people themselves who take ownership of the project and encourage the participation of others. It is a much simpler and faster way to transmit the philosophy behind the Time Banks - which is to generate Social Capital and to show the opportunities involved in sharing and collaborating with one another whilst reducing domestic costs and benefitting the family economy. In this way, we build alternative worlds in which human relationships in communion with Nature and Everything are given priority over mere economic and commercial interests that are short term and reductionist, traits that are inherent to the capitalist model.

Blanca: To reach out to the people we are proposing an alternative lifestyle, and through this the people involved grow in confidence with one another and facilitate future exchanges whilst generating Social Capital. We do this with different group activities like: laughter therapy workshops, fancy dress bicycle races (alley cat), visits to a recycling plant, conferences with different themes (indigenous cultures of America and Central America, malnutrition in Guatemala.., Cinema-forums, etc.). In brief, taking part in fun activities with a deeper undercurrent that touches themes like ecology, education

in principals, gender equality, etc. The idea is that through promoting these alternative lifestyles we reach more people.

EM magazine: How does the Time Bank work?

Sebastián: The origins of the Time Banks go back the local trade networks (LETS) that sprung up in the 60’s. These trade networks later evolved into Time Banks, though they are not only limited to reciprocal trade between individuals but also allow for exchanges between all members of the Bank without necessarily involving direct reciprocity. Each Time Bank is different from the last, because it has to be a reflection of its users and adapt itself to their particular needs, capacities and availability.

Blanca: It is a group of individuals who unite to exchange knowledge, skills, abilities and even goods. The ideal scenario is that all of its members are involved and take responsibility in running the Time Bank and that everyone cooperates with one other so that it functions well.

Voces de Cambio Voces de Cambio es un programa extraaula para mujeres jóvenes, que promueve los derechos de la mujer, su rol en el desarrollo de un país sano y democrático, la expresión política y creativa, la alta autoestima y el liderazgo a través de capacitaciones y cursos de redacción y fotografía. Al finalizar el curso, se realiza una exposición de Fotografías y Redacciones en un centro cultural de Quetzaltenango con el trabajo de las participantes. Buscamos voluntarios fotografos con experiencia en Fotoperiodismo y trabajo social con jovenes.

Jean Michel Pichereau es originario de Canadá. Se destaca por su interés y colaboración en participar en actividades que ayudan al fortalecimiento de la educación hacia la niñez de extrema pobreza en Asociación con la Escuela de la Calle en Guatemala. Se ha esforzado y ha reunido fondos de sus compañeros y su familia para poder brindarles útiles escolares a 40 niños de esta escuela, y sobre todo ayudando para fortalecer la educación de una clase como facilitador. Melissa Foster ha sido nuestra voluntaria más entusiasta durante el mes pasado. Sus deberes empezaron al ayudar a completar una pared construida de llantas de tierra compactada. Ella fue parte integral para que nuestra escuela estuviera lista antes de Enero 14, el día de apertura! Hizo una pintura del nopal local (peral espinoso) y la usó para pintar adornos de flores escayolas y la pared en la entrada de la escuela. Su dedicación y su sonrisa han sido un verdadero encanto.

Voces de Cambio is a course program for young women, which promotes women rights, their role in development of a healthy and democratic country, the political and creative expression, high selfesteem and leadership through workshops and courses of reporting and photography.

At the end of the course a photo and report exhibition will be realized in a cultural center in Quetzaltenango, showing the work of the participants. Melissa Foster has been our most enthusiastic volunteer in over the past month. Her duties began with helping to complete a wall constructed of earth filled tires. Melissa played an integral part in making sure our school was ready for January 14th, opening day! She made paint out of local nopal (prickly pear) and used it to paint plaster flower adornments and the wall at the school’s entrance. Her dedication and her ready smile have been a true pleasure. Melissa’s hard work will be a visible benefit to the children, LWH volunteers and staff for years to come.

Mujeres Artesanas Ixkoq´a, are women producing typical textiles of the region of the community of Sololá and capacitating women about the history, meaning and colors of the textiles of the grandmothers.
