a idea de que el mundo se sostiene sobre los hombros de gigantes no está tan alejada de la realidad. El gigante que nos sostiene es la comunicación. Aun es asombroso como logramos sacudirnos el caos de la Torre de Babel, reponernos a la soberbia humana en su más pura expresión y agruparnos para compartir y comunicar.

La etimología de la palabra "comunicación" nos lleva al vocablo latino "comunis" que significa "común". De allí que, comunicar, signifique transmitir ideas y pensamientos con el objetivo de ponerlos "en común" con el otro. Así pues, necesariamente, la comunicación exige la utilización de un código compartido.

La comunicación encierra diferentes axiomas, códigos compartidos, barreras y significados que enriquecen o entorpecen un proceso. En un mundo tecnificado como el nuestro con téc-

nicas de enseñanza obsoletas, las habilidades orales (escuchar, 45% y hablar, 30%), tradicionalmente han estado desatendidas, pues no han sido objeto de enseñanza. Es una habilidad que no se ha fomentado ni en la escuela ni en casa.

Por el contrario, las habilidades escritas, si han tenido un mayor protagonismo en la formación académica. Con lo que se deduce que nuestras competencias a la hora de comunicar están por los suelos.

Diferentes voces, una idea quiso ilustrar los esfuerzos de organizaciones, grupos e individuos propagando noticias de paz. Cada uno de ellos ha encontrado una forma creativa de comunicar y conectar alrededor de un mismo sentir. Ya sea en el teatro, en el cine, en la red, en el día a día, las siguientes páginas están llenas de ejemplos positivos de gente comunicando y enlazando.

he idea that the world stands on the shoulders of giants is not so far from reality. The giant that sustains us is communication. More amazing still is how we succeed in shaking ourselves loose from the chaos of the Tower of Babel, reclaiming for ourselves our human pride in its purest form of expression and joining together to share and communicate with one another. he etymology of the word "communication" comes from the Latin word "communis," meaning "common." Thus to communicate means to transmit ideas and thoughts in order to put us on "common ground" with one another. So communication necessarily requires the use of a shared code. he act of communication encompasses different axioms, shared codes, meanings and barriers that can either enhance or hin-

der the process. In a world as technologized as our is, obsolete teaching techniques have neglected oral communication skills (listening 45%; speaking 30%), since they have not been the primary teaching objective. These skills are not encouraged either in school or at home. In contrast, writing skills have played a larger role in academia; subsequently, our present-day communication skills are at low levels. if ferent Voices, One Idea attempts to illustrate the ef forts of organizations, groups and individuals in spreading the news of peace. Each of them has found a creative way to communicate and connect around the same feeling. Whether in the theater, in film, on the net, or in day-to-day life, the following pages are full of positive examples of people communicating and bonding.

A

re the mass media a source of violence? Do they reproduce reality, or do they create it? By constructing scenarios or creating perceptions of insecurity, do they induce violence? These questions went around the office during the creation of this edition, and the answer was "No," in accord with Johan Galtung, director of Transcend – A Network for Peace and Development, but they pay for it and use it as a means of polarization, because in a given scenario, they almost exclusively give voice to the extremist positions to the detriment of the moderates, and are constantly engaged in various methods of promoting the use of force.

Ex kaibil admite haber participado en la masacre Las Dos Erres Veintiocho años después de haber asesinado a un bebé lanzándolo al fondo de un pozo, Gilberto Jordán reconoció su participación en el hecho. Durante todo ese tiempo lo ocultó e incluso mintió sobre su pasado militar para conseguir la nacionalidad estadounidense.

Jordán formó parte del grupo kaibil que el 7 de diciembre de 1982 irrumpió en la aldea Las Dos Erres, donde el Ejército guatemalteco asesinó a 252 personas, sin hacer distinción entre hombres, mujeres o niños. Pero su memoria fue más lejos, pues, según dijo ante la justicia de Estados Unidos, este solamente fue uno de los primeros asesinatos que cometió en esa aldea, ubicada en La Libertad, Petén.

Jordán fue detenido en el estado de Florida desde el pasado 5 de mayo por autoridades migratorias y este miércoles aceptó haber formado parte de las fuerzas especiales kaibil y del grupo responsable de la masacre.

Las declaraciones del ex kaibil pueden llevarlo a enfrentar hasta 10 años de prisión y una multa de hasta 250,000 dólares, pero esto se debe solo a las violaciones a la ley migratoria estadounidense. Por la masacre hay un proceso que se sigue en su contra en el Ministerio Público.

La resolución también estipula que “los kaibiles sacaron a los hombres de la escuela y los llevaron vendados y maniatados a un pozo de agua inconcluso donde los fusilaron. Después sacaron a las mujeres y los niños para llevarlos al mismo lugar. En el camino muchas niñas fueron violadas (…)”.

SESAN: estiman 20 millones de guatemaltecos, la mayoría pobres, en el 2020 De acuerdo con representantes de la Secretaría de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional (SESAN), en el 2020 Guatemala tendrá problemas severos en el área alimentaria ya que se estima que la población en el país será de más de 20 millones.

Mario Erales, asesor del Ministerio de Agricultura, Ganadería y Alimentación, manifiesto que "Guatemala es pobre y no hay dinero en el mundo que nos saque de la pobreza; por eso hay que enseñarle a la gente a que ellos produzcan, dándoles la oportunidad de capacitarse. Hay países que son más pobres que nosotros en recursos, sin embargo la gente entiende y aprende."

Piden suspender contrato en Parque Laguna del Tigre con Perenco Sectores sociales y abogados afirman que la alteración de un documento del Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (CONAP) sería factor determinante para que se suspenda la discusión de la prórroga del contrato petrolero 2-85, el cual autoriza a la empresa Perenco a explotar petróleo en el Parque Nacional Laguna del Tigre.

Rafael Maldonado, coordinador del Centro de Acción Legal Ambiental y Social (CALAS), expuso que hay suficientes elementos para que el presidente Álvaro Colom se abstenga de conocer la posible prórroga del contrato petrolero 2-85 con la empresa Perenco, y que en aras de la gobernabilidad debe detener el trámite. Agregó que es ilegal el plan maestro de Laguna del Tigre, el cual se utiliza como base para afirmar que el petróleo no deteriora la zona núcleo de la Reserva de la Biósfera Maya.

El trabajo, la base de la igualdad El trabajo es la base de la igualdad entre los géneros, por lo que es fundamental el logro de la autonomía económica, física y política de las mujeres, según el documento “¿Qué Estado, para qué igualdad?”, elaborado por la Comisión Económica de América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL).

Es necesario buscar una nueva ecuación virtuosa que incluya al Estado, al mercado y a las familias, entendiéndose tanto hombres como mujeres, pues cuando se cuantifica el tiempo de trabajo total, éste es mayor para las mujeres que para los varones.

Las conclusiones del análisis enfatizan que un camino para lograr la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres es que desde lo normativo se haga hincapié en la titularidad de derechos para los géneros.

Cumplimiento de los ODM: tan lento que Guatemala no los alcanzará

Si bien Guatemala avanza en términos generales en la dirección correcta hacia el logro del cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) y la equidad de género, el ritmo de avance es demasiado lento para la magnitud del desafío; los indicadores perfilan una situación desfavorable para las guatemaltecas.

Guatemala difícilmente podrá cumplir a tiempo varias de las metas fijadas para el 2015; la clave se encuentra en acelerar los procesos y en la combinación de tres elementos: la creación de políticas públicas, distribuir la riqueza equitativamente y garantizar los servicios básicos.

Guatemala se adhirió a demanda contra ley de inmigrantes de Arizona La Cancillería informó el martes 13 que el Estado de Guatemala se adhirió a la demanda contra la ley de inmigrantes de Arizona, la cual fue presentada por una coalición de organizaciones de defensa de los derechos civiles en Estados Unidos como Amicus Curiae (Amigo de la Corte).

La Embajada de Guatemala en Washington entregó el recurso a la misión de México acreditada en territorio estadounidense, para que la presente junto a otras adhesiones en la Corte Distrital de Arizona, en el caso Friendly House contra Michael B. Whiting, último día abierto es el 17 de mayo La Cancillería informó que la meta es dejar sin vigencia la ley SB10 70, de cero tolerancia contra la inmigración.

Ex-Kaibil admits to participating in Las Dos Erres massacre Twenty-eight years after killing a baby by throwing it down a well, Gilberto Jordan has admitted his involvement in the incident. During that time, he hid and even lied about his military past to get U.S. citizenship.

Jordan was part of the Kaibil group that on December 7th, 1982, stormed the village of Las Dos Erres, where the Guatemalan army killed 252 people, with no distinction among men, women or children. But his account went further, since, as he told the U.S. Justice Department, this was only one of the murders he committed in the village, located in La Libertad, PetĂŠn.

Jordan was arrested in Florida on May 5th by immigration authorities, and on July 7th admitted to having been part of the Kaibil Special Forces and the group responsible for the massacre.

The statements made by the former Kaibil could result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of as much as $250,000, but only for violations of U.S. immigration law. For the massacre there is a case being pursued against him by the Prosecutor's Office.

The resolution also states that "Kaibiles took men out of the school and took them blindfolded and handcuffed to an unfinished well and executed them. Then they took the women and children to the same place. On the way many girls were raped (...). "

Food, stated that, "Guatemala is poor, and there is no money in the world to get us out of poverty; therefore we must teach people to be productive & give them training opportunities. There are countries that are poorer than us in resources, but the people understand and learn."

Laguna del Tigre Park asked to suspend contract with Perenco Social sectors and lawyers claim that the alteration of a document from the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) would be a determining factor in the suspension of talks concerning the extension of the 2-85 oil contract, which authorizes Perenco to exploit oil from Laguna del Tigre National Park.

Rafael Maldonado, coordinator of the Legal, Environmental and Social Action Center (CALAS), stated that there are sufficient reasons for President Alvaro Colom to refrain from recognizing the possible extension of the 2-85 oil contract with Perenco, and that in the interests of governance he ought to stop the process. He said the Laguna del Tigre master plan is illegal, and is being used as a basis to assert that oil exploitation does not deteriorate the core zone of the Maya Biosphere Reserve.

Work, the basis of equality

SESAN: Estimated 20 million Guatemalans, mostly poor, by 2020

Work is the basis of gender equality, and is an essential element in the achievement of economical, physical and political autonomy for women, according to the document “What Kind of State? What Kind of Equality?� prepared by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

According to representatives of the Ministry of Food and Nutritional Security (SESAN), in 2020 Guatemala will have severe food shortages, as it is estimated that the population in the country will exceed 20 million.

It is necessary to find a new, morally-just equation that includes the state, market and families, including both men and women, because when we measure total working time, it is higher for women than for men.

Meeting the MDGs: so slow that Guatemala won't reach them While, in general terms, Guatemala advances in the right direction towards the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and gender equity, the pace remains too slow for the magnitude of the challenge; indicators outline an unfavorable situation for Guatemala.

It will be difficult for Guatemala to complete on time several of the goals set for 2015; the key will be the acceleration of processes, in addition to the combination of three elements: the creation of public policies; fair distribution of wealth; and the guarantee of basic services.

Guatemala joins lawsuit against Arizona immigration law The Foreign Ministry reported on July 13th that Guatemala has joined in a petition against Arizona's immigration law, which was presented by a coalition of civil rights defense organizations in the United States in an Amicus Curiae (Friend of the Court) brief.

The Guatemalan Embassy in Washington delivered the appeal to the Mexican Foreign Ministry in the U.S., to be presented with other similar attachments in the District Court of Arizona in the case of Friendly House et. al. vs. Michael B. Whiting et. al, filed on May 17th.

The Foreign Ministry said the goal is to stop law SB1070, a zero-tolerance law against immigration, from coming into effect.

'The Cove': "El cine es un arma de construcción masiva".

The Cove, narra lo ocurrido en un pequeño pueblo nipón donde, tras una fachada ecológica, se esconde una sangrienta matanza anual de delfines. Más de 23 mil mueren cada año en sus costas, y otros miles son capturados para ser exhibidos en delfinarios y parques acuáticos del mundo. ¿Cuándo, y por qué, puso en marcha The Cove?

Desde hace mucho tiempo. La historia era muy buena, así que tenía que hablar sobre ella. Era algo muy emocional, y que tocaba puntos de vista muy distintos: el uso de los delfines en cautividad, su pesca, la contaminación de los océanos, el cambio heroíco, en la vida de Ric O'Barry.

-El filme, prohibido en Japón.

-Ganó el último Oscar al mejor documental.

-La cinta narra la captura y matanza de delfines en Japón.

-El realizador tacha a esa industria de "criminal y sangrienta".

ollywood se ha puesto de su lado: ganó el Oscar al mejor documental y varios rostros famosos, como el de Brad Pitt, se han manifestado en su apoyo. ¿Por qué? Porque Louie Psihoyos, director de The Cove, ha irritado profundamente a Japón, que impidió la producción de la cinta y que, hasta ahora, ha prohibido su proyección en el país.

¿Cómo se enteró de lo que sucedía en Taiji?

Fue en el año 2000, durante una conferencia marina en California.

Muchos de los presentes perdían el tiempo hablando de cosas sin demasiada importancia y, casi al final, alguien sacó el tema. Pregunté, indagué y descubrí cómo se sustentaba la industria de la captura de delfines. Era nuevo para mí, y para todo el mundo. Por eso había que hablar de ello. ¿Cómo fue construyendo la película?

Como una película normal. Después de la idea, tuve un guión. Después, me puse manos a la obra. Buceé mucho, y llegué a ese pueblo, donde a todo el mundo parecen gustarle los delfines, para descubrir que algo iba muy mal. Era ridículo: un lugar donde, presuntamente, se preserva a los delfines pero donde se matan más de veinte mil al año.

Me han amenazado de muerte

varias veces. Algunos quisieron ayudarme, pero bajo la condición de no desvelar su identidad. ¿Qué espera lograr con la película?

Lo primero, que el público que vaya a ver la película deje de asistir a delfinarios y espectáculos de delfines.

Pues son la punta de lanza de una industria criminal y sangrienta. Por otro lado, que también investigue sobre lo que está comiendo, sobre cómo nos mienten. Y, además, espero que detenga la cuenta atrás que se está activando contra los delfines: muchos están muriendo, y no sé qué pasará en un futuro con ellos. Me gustaría, con The Cove, cambiar la vida de la gente, aunque sea en pequeños aspectos. ¿Confía en que la gente pueda cambiar?

Sí. Tengo muchísima esperanza en la gente joven. La gente de mi generación, es cierto, es demasiado mayor para cambiar las cosas, pero los jóvenes son receptivos, siempre buscan respuestas. Ellos sí se dan cuenta de lo mucho que tenemos que perder si las cosas continúan igual. ¿Y los políticos? ¿Se dan cuentatambién?

No lo sé, pero también los necesitamos. He estado en el Congreso de EE UU, y me escucharon... Espero que sirva de algo. El cine es un arma de construcción masiva: es lo contrario a una bomba. Soy muy positivo, me encanta mi trabajo, y creo que con él puedo hacer cambiar a la gente. Muchos espectadores me han escrito a través de Internet, y cada vez es más fácil que todos podamos conectar y solucionar las cosas.

ollywood is on his side; He was awarded the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, and several famous faces, such as Brad Pitt, have manifested their support for him. Why? Because Louie Psihoyos, director of The Cove, has deeply irritated Japan, who tried to prevent the production of the film, and who, until now, had banned the film’s screening in the country. The Cove narrates the events that occur in a small Japanese town where, under an ecological facade, a bloody slaughter of dolphins takes place every year.

More than 23,000 die each year on Japan’s coast, and several thousand are captured to be exhibited in aquatic parks around the world.

When and why did you get The Cove started?

The project developed a long time ago. The story was very good, so I had to talk about it. It was something very emotional which touched very different points of view; the use of the dolphins in captivity, their capture, the contamination of the ocean, and the heroic change in the life of Ric O’Barry.

How did you find out about what was happening in Taiji?

It was in the year 2000, during a marine conference in California. Many

of of the people present wasted their time talking about things of little importance, and almost at the end, somebody brought up the subject. I asked, inquired and discovered how the industry of dolphin capture was sustained. It was new to me, and for the rest of the world. That is why I had to talk about it.

How was the film constructed?

As a normal film. After the idea, I had a script. Afterwards I started working. I dived a lot, and I arrived in this town where apparently everyone seemed to love dolphins, until I discovered that something was wrong.

It was ridiculous: a place where presumably, dolphins are protected, but where more than twenty thousand are killed every year.

I have been threatened with death several times. Some people tried to help me, but under the condition of not revealing their identity.

What do you expect to achieve with this film?

First, that the public that goes to see the movie stops attending dolphin shows. These are the spearheads of a criminal and bloody industry. Secondly, that they investigate what they are

eating, about how they are lied to.

And finally, I expect the countdown activated against the dolphins to be stopped: many are dying, and I don’t know what will happen to them in the future. I would love to change the lives of people with The Cove, even in small aspects.

Do you trust that people will change?

Yes. I have a lot of hope in young people. It is true that the people of my generation are too old to change things, but young people are receptive, they are always looking for answers. They are aware of how much we will lose if things stay the same.

And the politicians, are they aware?

I don’t know, but we also need them.

efinitivamente, Quetzaltenango ya es una ciudad cosmopolita. Se respira progreso y desarrollo para nosotros, sus habitantes...Y colorín colorado, esto sólo lo creen los ilusos, los desequilibrados o los corruptos, que consiguen creerse sus propias mentiras.

La palabra desarrollo, cuando menos para esta ciudad, alcanza una concepción degenerada, llena de mutaciones y malas interpretaciones consecuencia de pobrísimos niveles de conciencia económica, ecológica y moral. De pronto resultamos malas fotocopias de la cultura pop de Warhol (cuya obra, por cierto, no despierta en mí ninguna emoción sublime), y percibimos estéticas las manifestaciones arquitectónicas que portan una enorme “m”, casi como salvadoras de las calles en las que se ubican, aún a pesar de lo que implica su presencia. Además, nos parece una inequívoca señal de prosperidad común el toparnos con sendos buses rojos, casi inservibles y poco prácticos, que paulatinamente comienzan a atender algunas rutas urbanas, sin importarnos que su uso haya sido descontinuado en la ciudad capital. ¿Y qué decir de la idea de “clase”

y “elegancia” que nos da adquirir cosas en cierto comercio – debo admitir que también soy una visitante de regular frecuencia – alojado en una enorme bodega, con un enorme parqueo, pero en el que siempre te podés encontrar a conocidos y amigos comprando artículos que de pronto no son necesarios? ¿O de las tardes en los centros comerciales, nueva actividad social favorita de gran parte de la población, endeudada con tal de estar allí, de ser vista?¿Cuándo se volvió necesario andar cambiando de carro solo por el aburrimiento que nos da nuestro viejito? Es la cultura pop, distorsionada muy a lo subdesarrollado, el llenar tu casa de chunches y tu cuerpo de veneno, el gastar por gastar, sin ton ni son, sin conciencia, sin amor, sin solidaridad. ¡Qué tristeza! Mientras tanto, la pujanza comercial y empresarial quetzalteca de tradición merma a merced de los avances del “progreso”, y más familias pagan el precio de una Xela “a la altura de las grandes ciudades”. Una Xela que se ensucia, se pudre desde su interior, cuya magia sobrevive por su misma imposibilidad. Una Xela que se nos está perdiendo.

Y mientras tanto, también, los verdaderos problemas de esta ciudad van quedando al margen, como el

desorden urbano, el tráfico, la infraestructura básica, la seguridad...Sin olvidar otros dolores a los que me he referido siempre, otras pérdidas más trascendentales. ¿Cuándo hablar de asesinatos al nivel de los de la ciudad de Guatemala?

Pero los quetzaltecos no actuamos, aguardamos, y esa es nuestra resistencia silenciosa, paciente, como si pretendiéramos probarnos a nosotros mismos nuestra capacidad de aguantar, nuestra tolerancia. ¿Qué estamos esperando?¿Acaso el perdernos por completo? En lo que nos decidimos, siempre podemos adormecer la conciencia con algunos “sedantes” legales y muy convenientes, un par de traguitos, un litro de Cabro, y un partido del equipo de nuestros amores, el Xelajú, al que muchos agradecemos alguna alegría en este tiempo de deterioro y pena.

ithout a doubt, Quetzaltenango is a cosmopolitan city now, a hotbed of progress and development for its inhabitants, and that's that, end of story...only the deluded or unbalanced believe this, or the corrupt souls who continue to believe their own lies.

“Development,” at least for this city, has become a debased concept, full of mutations and poor interpretations resulting from extremely poor levels of economic, ecological and moral awareness. We soon end up like bad photocopies reminiscent of Warhol's pop culture (whose work certainly doesn't awaken any sublime feelings in me) - seeing architectonic manifestations adorned with an enormous "M" as being sophisticated, almost like saviors of the streets they're located upon, in spite of what their presence implies. And the nearly useless and not very practical red buses that are gradually beginning to cover a few urban routes appear to be an unmistakable sign of widespread prosperity, disregarding the fact that their use has been discontinued in the capital city.

And what should we say about the feeling of "class" and "elegance" that one gets from shopping at a certain

business (I should admit that I'm a regular visitor too) situated inside an enormous warehouse with a huge parking lot, where you can always find your friends and acquaintances buying things they don't need? Or the afternoons spent at the mall (the favorite new social activity for a big part of the population,) going deeper into debt, just to be there, to be seen?

When did it become necessary to buy a new car just because we were bored with our old one? It's pop culture, heavily slanted towards the immature - filling your house with knick-knacks and your body with poison; spending just to spend, no rhyme nor reason, no conscience, no love, no solidarity.

How sad! Traditional Quetzaltecan corporate and commercial might is shrinking, thanks to the advances of "progress," and more families are paying the price to live in a Xela that's "just like the big cities” - a Xela that's becoming dirty, rotting from within, whose magic survives by its own impossibility. A Xela that is being lost to us.

But we Quetzaltecos don't do anything; we wait, and that is our silent resistance, patient, as if to prove to ourselves our ability to endure, our tolerance. What are we waiting for?

However we decide, we can always numb our consciousness with some legal and convenient "sedative," a couple of shots, a liter of Cabro, and a football game starring the team we love, Xelajú, to whom many of us are grateful for providing some joy during this time of deterioration and suffering.

Armadillo en la ruta de los títeres

A

rmadillo es una asociación dedicada a desarrollar y promover el teatro y los títeres.

Para ello se ocupa de formar, investigar, crear, producir, promocionar y autogestionar espectáculos y talleres para todos los públicos, desde los más pequeñitos hasta los adultos, en zonas rurales y urbanas.

El objetivo primordial es difundir a través de este elementosfundamentales para el desarrollo integral de los individuos.

Escuchar las carcajadas de niñas y niños, descubrir los identificados con algúnpersonaje o verlos vivir las historias en carne propia es mejorar su calidad de vida. Este aspecto en especial es el motor para apasionarnos y comprometernos más con nuestro oficio.

Poder reír, enternecer o filosofar sobre las pequeñas cosas de la vida es parte integral de nuestroteatro y la razón para llevarlo a donde más se necesita.

Desde su fundación en el año 2000, ha presentado unavariedad de espectáculos y talleres, participando en festivales internacionales de cultura en Centroamérica, Suramérica y Europa.

¿Actualmentecómo se financia el grupo para realizar sus actividades?

Una gran parte del trabajo del grupo es escribir proyectos a organizaciones internacionales, agencias de desarrollo, entidades gubernamentales, etc. De esta labor se desencadena el financiamiento para continuar. La gestión es intensa al lado del oficio artístico.

En su portal de Internet, pueden encontrar información completa del colectivo, con fotos, enlaces para efectuar donaciones, las organizaciones que colaboran en este proyecto, los festivales que han participado, la sinópsis de sus obras, y un espacio para contactarlos. Estracto de la entrevista con el director de Armadillo, Guillermo Santillana, realizada para una revista sud americana. ¿Porqué la necesidad de crear un grupo de teatro con títeres?

El teatro de títeres nos buscó a nosotros, nos encontró y descubrimos que también lo buscábamos desde hace mucho tiempo. Así que decidimos dedicarnos completamente a este oficio. La imaginación es la esencia, el universo de los títeres nos ha llevado a imaginar muchísimo más lejos que con el teatro.

Poder llevar al público a conocer lugares, personajes, situaciones, juegos, historias y miles de posibilidades para soñar, inventar y sentir. ¿Piensas que las obras que presenta el grupo, han mejorado la calidad de vida de los niños en Guatemala? ¿Porqué?

Cuéntame brevemente la experiencia que ha tenido el grupoArmadillo al visitar países como Venezuela, Perú y Francia. ¿qué han aprendido a lo largo de estos viajes?

El armadillo, de naturaleza nómada, nos llevó a conocer primero nuestra Guatemala entera, allí nos descubrimos y llegamos a las raíces de nuestra esencia. Después visitamos otros países, nos fundimos con nuevas culturas y nos impregnamos con el cariño del público. En el extranjero también encontramos nuestra patria y crecimos al compartir con colegas titiriteros y con todas las personas maravillosas que nos brindaron afecto. El aprendizaje con los títeres no termina nunca y en estas rutas encontramos el valor humano de darle vida a los objetos para transmitir emociones. ¿En qué se diferencia el trabajo que ustedes realizan con títeres frente a otras propuestas de entre tenimiento como películas de dibujos animados para niños?

Las historias que representamos reflejan nuestra propia cultura latino americana, con toda su riqueza; son nuestra voz. Otro de los aspectos que nos diferencian de

las historias de la televisión es que los espectáculos son en vivo y los personajes pueden comunicarse con el público y reaccionar ante el entorno, cada función es diferente a otra aunque sea la misma obra.

La conexión que se construye entre titiritero y títere, títere y público no tiene comparación con ninguna desconexión venida de la tecnología. ¿Qué es lo que desean lograr como "grupo armadillo" y con su nueva obra Ixquic y el árbol de la vida?

Seguir experimentando con los objetos, los títeres y el teatro. A la hora de contar historias, partir siempre de la raíz, para que seanuestra voz la que se oiga; artística y culturalmente hablando.

En específico, con esta obra buscamos retomar lo propio y darle vida desde los escenarios para todos los públicos posibles. Iniciamos este año con el estreno de Ixquic que estuvo en el mes de mayo y junio a dos Festivales Internacionales de teatro en Francia. También, se

rmadilo is an association dedicated to the development and promotion of theater and puppetry. It works to form, investigate, create, produce, promote, and fundraise for shows and workshops for the public, from the youngest children to adult audiences, in rural and urban areas. Their principle objective is to spread these fundamental skills and promote individual development through their work.

Why is there a need to create a theatrical group with puppets?

Puppetry sought us, found us, and we discovered that we had also been looking for it for a long time. Therefore, we decided to dedicate ourselves fully to this trade. Imagination is the essence and the universe of puppets has caused us to imagine much more broadly than with theater. To be able to transport the public to new places, characters, situations, games, stories, and thousands of opportunities to dream, invent, and feel.

Do you think that the shows presented by the group improve the quality of life for children in Guatemala? Why? To hear the bursts of laughter of the girls and boys, to discover that they identify with a character, or to see them live the stories in their own flesh is to improve their quality of life. This is really the motor that drives our passion and engages us further in our trade. To be able to laugh, to connect, to philosophize, about the small things

in life is an integral part of our theater and the reason to bring it to where it is needed.

How is the group currently financed in order to conduct its activities?

A large part of the group’s work is writing project grant requests to international organizations, development agencies, governmental entities, etc.

Doing this type of work produces the financing we need to continue. These processes are important in the artistic trade.

Briefly tell me about the experiences that the Armadilo group has had when visiting countries like Venezuela, Peru, and France. What have you learned through these trips?

The Armadillo, due to its nomadic nature, allowed us first to get know all of Guatemala, where we discovered ourselves and rediscovered our roots.

Afterwards, we visited other countries where we blended with new cultures and filled ourselves with the public’s appreciation. Abroad we also found a home and we grew to share a lot with our puppeteer colleagues and with all the other wonderful people that offered us affection. The process of learning through puppetry never ends and along this path we have come across the human value that gives life to objects and can transmit emotions to objects.

What is the difference between the work that you do with puppets and the other available forms of entertainment like cartoon movies for children?

The stories that we present reflect our own Latin American culture, with

Como punto de partida hacía un primer mensaje puedo mencionar la conservación y revalorización de la herencia y cosmovisión maya con un espectáculo que mezcla lo contemporáneo y lo ritual

Ixquic y el árbol de la vida (sinopsis) Ganadora del Premio Ford MotorCompany a la Conservación de la Herencia Cultural Cuentan las abuelas y los abuelos mayas, que en el principio de los tiempos, todos los seres del mundo vivían en tinieblas pues reinaban los señores de Xibalbá, el mundo subterráneo.

En aquellos tiempos, vivían dos hermanos gemelos llamados Hun-Hunahpú y Vucub-Hunahpú, ellos habían recibido de los animales de la tierra la enseñanza del juego de pelota.

Los señores de Xibalbá se llenaron de cólera al saber que aquellos hermanos conocían el secreto del juego de pelota. Fue así, que robaron las vidas de los gemelos y como advertencia pusieron la calavera de Hun-Hunahpú en el árbol más alejado y marchito, y prohibieron que nadie se acercara a aquel sitio.

Desde aquel día, este árbol comenzó a florecer, llenándose de frutos y flores, de cantos y colores.

Ixquic, princesa de Xibalbá, atraída por una inmensa curiosidad, fue en busca del extraño árbol.

Este encuentro transformaría completamente el futuro del mundo subterráneo.

Teatro de títeres Armadillovuelve a Guatemala en julio para continuar su labor. Ahora se prepara la organizacióndel 4to. Festival Gran Teatrito en la ciudad de Quetzaltenango, se contará con la participación de artístas de diferentes partes delmundo. Del 1 al 5 de diciembre próximo.

all of its richness; they are our voice.

Another aspect that differentiates us from the stories on television is that the shows are live and the characters can communicate with the public and react to the environment, each performance is different even though it is the same production. The connection that is built between the puppeteer and puppet and between the puppet and public is not comparable to the type of disconnection that results from technology.

What is it that you desire to achieve with the “Armadillo Group” and with its new show Ixquic and the Tree of Life?

To continue experimenting with objects, puppets, and theater. When we tell stories, to always share from the soul so that it is our voice that is heard; speaking artistically and culturally.

Specifically, with this work we are seeking to make it our own and give a life to the scenes for all possible audiences.

We began this year with the opening of Ixquic in May and June at two international theater festivals in France, invited

by UNESCO, so that the voices of the ancestral Meso American communites can be heard.

Is there a specific message in the work or is its sole purpose to entertain?

The work contains various messages, although some are more perceptible than others. Everything that is presented has a symbol and uses little text. The messages can be more than what we propose; the public can interpret the undercurrent

of the work. As a starting point towards explaining one of the messages, I can mention the conservation and revaluation of Mayan heritage and worldview within a show that mixes the contemporary and the ritual.

Ixquic and the Tree of Life (Synopsis) Winner of the Ford Motor Company Prize for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage Mayan grandmothers and grandfathers say, that in the beginning of time, all the beings of the world lived in darkness because the leaders of Xilbalbá, the underworld, reigned.

In those times, two twins named Hun-hunahpú and Vucub-Hunahpú had learned from the animals of the land the teachings of the 'juego de pelota' - the ball game.

The leaders of Xibalbá were filled with rage to find out that the twins knew the secret of the ball game Because of this, they robbed the twins of their lives and, as a warning, placed Hun-Hunahpú´s skull on a remote and withered tree, and prohibited anyone from coming near that place.

From that day on, the tree started to flower, filling it with fruits and flowers, songs and colors.

Ixquic, princess of Xibalbá, drawn by immense curiosity, went to search for the strange tree. The resulting encounter would completely transform the future of the underworld.

Armadillo puppet theater returns to Guatemala in July. The organization is preparing for the 4th Grand Theater Festival in Quetzaltenango. It will be held with the participation of artists from different parts of the world from the 1st to the 5th of December.

Buscando la Esperanza Tracy L. Barnett Ex periodista de la prensa escrita empieza un viaje épico en busca de esperanza para el planeta.

H

ace poco más de un año, trabajando como editora para el Houston Chronicle, observaba cómo la industria de los periódicos me desenredaba y preparaba para una transición. La transición llego antes de lo que esperaba y hoy escribo desde la sombra del volcán en la animada cuidad de San Salvador maravillándome acerca de lo que han traído los meses anteriores.

Cuando me convertí en un número de un masivo despido, decidí poner en una bodega todas mis cosas y entretejer los multicolores hilos de mis dos décadas y media como escritora ambientalista, especializada en América Latina en temas de migración y escritora de viajes, y fundé el Proyecto Esperanza, www.TheEsperanzaProject.org, nombrado en honor a la palabra en español “esperanza”.

La idea era usar multimedia, portales de internet bilingües como un vehículo para cubrir el multifacético movimiento para la sostenibilidad por todas partes en las Américas – un área que ha sido cubierta de una forma temerosa por los principales medios de comunicación.

Pero sabía que mi anterior trabajo iba a madurar con imponentes caracteres e historias inspiradoras que estaban esperando ser contadas.

En enero empecé el camino del viaje de mi vida, comencé en México a trabajar, contactando activistas, periodistas y escritores en todo el camino y produciendo una serie de perfiles acerca del trabajo innovador en camino de crear un mejor mundo.

Cinco meses y cinco países dentro del proyecto, con un movido Facebook que tiene más de 10,000 lectores, siento que he tomado la decisión correcta. Mis perfiles han recorrido toda una gama, desde permaculturistas hasta activistas teatrales en bicicleta, desde jóvenes mayas evangélicos hasta antiguos guerrilleros que siguen batallado a través de las ondas de radio. La gente comprometida con este movimiento es bastante y extremadamente diversa, pero comparten unas cuantas características: son apasionados por el planeta en el que vivimos y están muy lejos de rendirse en la lucha por salvarlo.

Acá el cambio climático no pertenece solamente a los abraza-árboles, el “cambio climático” está en boca de todos, desde los taxistas, a los trabajadores en restaurantes hasta los granjeros. Acá en Centro América ya se está

sufriendo de sequias más ásperas, veranos más cálidos, feroces tormentas y derrumbes mortales. Saben que no hay tiempo que perder.

En las páginas del Proyecto Esperanza, cuento la historia de Martín Toc, un joven maya graduado en mercadotecnia que rechazó un trabajo en la ciudad para regresar a convertir su comunidad en un área verde. Tino Recinos, quien peleo con la guerrilla durante 15 años y se ha convertido en el líder de un movimiento de radio comunitaria en Guatemala, el “Subcoyote” Alberto Ruíz quien a través de su viaje de 13 años por América Latina a bordo de la Caravana Arcoíris para la Paz, ha puesto una semilla para una forma diferente de vida para las Américas.

Pero esto es solo el inicio. Mi plan es abrirme paso a través de Centroamérica durante este año y Sudamérica el próximo, haciendo consciencia de este movimiento y buscar apoyo mutuo entre las redes a lo largo del camino. Looking For Esperanza Tracy L. Barnett about the innovative work underway to create a better world.

Five months and five countries into the project, with a lively Facebook following of more than 10,000 readers, I feel I’ve made the right choice. My profiles have run the gamut from passionate permaculturists to theatrical bicycle activists, from evangelical Mayan youth to former guerillas bringing their battle to the airwaves.

The people engaged in this movement are many and extremely diverse, but they share a few characteristics: they’re passionate about the planet that we live on, and they are far from giving up on the struggle to save it.

Former newspaper journalist begins epic journey in search of hope for the planet.

A

little over a year ago, as the travel editor of the Houston Chronicle, I watched as the newspaper industry was unraveling around me and prepared myself for a transition.

That transition came sooner than I’d expected, and today I write from the shadow of the volcano in the lively city of San Salvador, marveling at what the past few months have brought.

When I became part of a mass layoff last year, I decided to put my things into storage and tie together the multicolored threads of my two and a half decades as an environmental writer, a specialist in Latin American and immigration issues and a travel writer, and I founded The Esperanza Project, www.TheEsperanzaProject.org, named for the Spanish word for hope.

The idea was to use the multimedia, bilingual web portal as a vehicle to cover the multifaceted movement for sustainability throughout the Americas – an area which has been scarcely covered by the mainstream media, but which I knew from my previous work to be ripe with compelling characters and inspirational stories just waiting to be told.

In January, I hit the road on the journey of my life, beginning in Mexico and working my way down, contacting activists, journalists and writers all the way and producing a series of profiles

Here, climate change is not the bailiwick of the tree huggers; “cambio climatico” is on everyone’s lips, from the taxi drivers to the restaurant workers to the farmers. Here in Central America the people are already suffering harsher droughts, hotter summers, fiercer storms and deadly landslides. They know there’s no time to waste.

In the pages of The Esperanza Project, I tell the stories of Martin Toc, a young Mayan marketing major who gave up a job in the city to turn his village green; Tino Recinos, who fought with the guerillas for 15 years and has now become a leader in the Guatemalan community radio movement; and “Subcoyote” Alberto Ruíz, whose 13-year journey through Latin America aboard the Rainbow Peace Caravan sowed the seeds for a different way of life throughout the Americas.

But this is just the beginning. My plan is to make my way through Central America this year and South America the next, building awareness of this movement and a mutual support network along the way. tilizar los medios de comunicación para fortalecer una sociedad democrática, es un reto importante. Cada ciudadano para juzgar necesita conocer los hechos pero también el contexto que da cuerpo a los argumentos. El problema es que la comunicación se resume por lo general en una multitud de informaciones sin lazos entre ellas. Los periódicos, los canales de televisión, las radios difunden noticias a una velocidad impresionante como un chorro que no para de gotear. Y más datos recibe el cerebro, menos tiempo tiene para grabar y analizar.

Si hablamos de la violencia en Guatemala, se necesita estudiar este fenómeno al nivel de Centro América y de México. Es un fenómeno

transnacional que un país solo no puede resolver (el tráfico de droga, de armas de fuego, de pandillas).

Si hablamos de los índices económicos, el Producto interno bruto no es suficiente. Los políticos solo se refieren a este índice. Existen otros índices que toman en cuenta otros criterios más interesantes para fomentar una sociedad (educación, desigualdad, salud, esperanza de vida, huella ecológica, etc.). Como muchos países en el mundo, en Guatemala, la economía informal es más importante que la economía formal que representa el PIB. Si analizamos el “Happy planet index” que toma en cuenta la esperanza de vida, la huella ecológica, el bienestar y el sentimiento de sentirse en buena salud, Guatemala se clasifica

dentro de los primeros países del mundo. Es cierto que este índice no es completo (no toma en cuenta la educación o la desigualdad) pero rompe con la “religión” del PIB y alumbra otros caminos para la sociedad.

Estos dos ejemplos muestran que cambiando el tratamiento de la información, se puede tener otra mirada sobre la sociedad. El ciudadano tiene así la capacidad de dar una opinión mas afinada y puede proponer otras alternativas políticas.

a comunicación es la base de la vida. Si uno no sabe comunicarse las personas que están a su alrededor no podrán comprender lo que se quiere expresar. Gracias a la comunicación puede llegar un mensaje de una persona a otra.

También nos ayuda a comunicar cómo nos sentimos, qué necesitamos y qué pensamos.

Esta es una forma de la cual las personas pueden tener felicidad solo con la simple acción de expresarse.

Muchas veces las personas

sufren de depresión porque sienten que los demás no los comprenden y van por la vida diciendo que han intentado hablar y siguen sin entenderlas.

Pero si no saben expresarse de la manera adecuada, las personas que las quieren ayudar, pueden recibir otro mensaje y no ayudarlas de manera que se desea.

De alguna otra manera se tiene miedo de decir lo que se piensa debido a que no se quiere que los demás los juzguen o los tomen como motivo de burla por expresar sus sentimientos tan

abiertamente.

Toda felicidad proviene de la paz interior y los problemas se resuelven con inteligencia al saber cómo solucionarlos usando la comunicación.

sing the medium of communication to strengthen domestic society is an important challenge. In order to make a judgement, each citizen needs to know the facts, but also know the context that gives body to a given set of arguments. The problem is that communication generally occurs through a multitude of single pieces of information without ties connecting them. The newspapers, television chanels, and the radio diffuse news at incredible speed like a faucet that can not stop leaking.

And the more data the brain receives, the less time it has to record and analyze it.

If we talk about violence in Guatemala, it is necessary to study the phenomenon at the level of all

Another Form Of Communication For Another Society Central America and Mexico. It is a transnational phenomenon that one country on its own can not resolve (for instance with drug traficking, firearms, and gangs).

If we talk about economic indexes, talking about the GDP alone is insufficient. Politicians refer to this index only. Other indexes exist that take into account more interesting criteria that impact other aspects of society (such as education, inequality, health, life expectancy, ecological impact, etc.). Like many other countries in the world, in Guatemala, the informal economy is more important than the formal economy, which is alone represented in the GDP. However, if we analyze the “Happy Planet Index,” which takes into account life expectancy, ecolog-

ical impact, wellbeing and the sense of being in good health, Guatemala is classified within the first world countries. It is true that this index is not complete (it does not take into account education or inequality) but it breaks with the “religion” of the GDP and illuminates other possible roads for society.

These two examples show that with the changing treatment of information, another outlook on society can be formed. The citizen has the capacity to draw opinions that are sharper and can advocate other, alternative policies.

ommunication is the base of life. If one does not know how to communicate, the people around them will not be able to understand what they are trying to express. Thanks to communication it is possible to transfer a message from one person to another. Communication also helps us to communicate what we are feeling, what we need, and what we think. This is the way in which people can be happy through the simple action of expressing themselves alone.

Much of the time people suffer from depression because they feel that other people can not understand them and they go through life saying that they have tried to speak without any resulting understanding. But if they do not know how to express themselves in an adequate manner, people who want to help can receive another messange and will not help in the desired way.

s increíblemente reveladora la imagen del hombre tendido en la calle en la portada del periódico de nota roja en Guatemala. Al fondo una mujer llorando y los vecinos alrededor del cadáver. El dolor se ve reflejado por la expresión facial de los dolientes, los editores buscan, más que informar, elevar el número de periódicos vendidos, juegan con el color de las letras del titular y las lagrimas, en este juego de mercadeo de la muerte. El efecto contraproducente lo proporcionó la reiteración de estas imágenes. La conciencia colectiva y su identificación hacia el dolor ajeno se hizo menos sensible, la necrofilia de los medios creo mecanismos de autopreservación de la estabilidad emocional individual y colectiva. El cadáver dejo de ser humano y se convirtió en parte del panorama urbano, el folklore, un momento de encuentro entre la comunidad. ¿Siempre fue así?

En el año de 1977 la sociedad capitalina se vio fuertemente cuestionada por un hecho de sangre. Se produjo el secuestro de dos estudiantes, como respuesta a ello familiares, amigos y sociedad clamaron por que aparecieran con vida, era un secreto a voces que este hecho se había producido por su activismo político, pero en ese momento, en el imaginario colectivo pesaba más la juventud de ambos y la desgarradora imagen de la

madre que imploraba por la vida de su hijo. En término de algunos días aparece el cadáver torturado de uno de ellos, eso hizo temer por la suerte del otro, y la sociedad se moviliza en número de miles, las calles no se dan abasto, las organizaciones políticas de izquierda tratan de canalizar el descontento y el reclamo hacia sus fines de lucha, esto también tendría sus consecuencias.

Pasaron otros días más y el cadáver del segundo muchacho aparece en peores condiciones que el primero, el impacto en la sociedad fue diverso, algunos confirmaron lo brutal del accionar del Estado, pero otros inician un proceso de retracción que se manifestaría, en forma progresiva, hasta hoy en día.

El sensacionalismo hizo corriente la tragedia, esta se hizo cotidiana en su accionar pero morbosa en su presentación. La muerte se hizo normal o ¿la hicieron normal?

La cultura de la muerte a la que hacían referencia los arqueólogos en sus estudios sobre la historia prehispánica, en realidad no dejo de ser. Esta alcanzó nuevos códigos, nuevas imágenes en nuevos tiempos, el colonialista reafirmaba su predominio cultural sin incluirse él en el contexto que la propiciaba.

El muerto que persiste El muerto reclama su permanencia en el imaginario cotidiano del gua-

temalteco, se levanta con la sabana puesta y sube de nuevo en el mismo bus donde le dieron muerte.

La imagen acompaña al estudiante, al paseante, al trabajador, redefine su visión del mundo. Donde la muerte se convierte en el acompañante cotidiano, el periódico de nota roja se ha convertido en el parte de guerra y los que lo compran tratan de encontrar un nombre conocido.

Los medios en su transformación de imágenes sembraron la semilla de la inamovilidad, la resignación el destino manifiesto.

El político reivindica al muerto y ofrece más muerte. Vuelve a la nota de prensa a la imagen del joven tendido en la calle, ya no necesita de grandes proyectos, programas de gobierno, ni de ideología, solo la promesa de muerte que activa el imaginario colectivo.

Es la comunicación de la muerte rondante, la que hoy ha definido a la prensa como el cuarto poder, el que va más allá de informar si lo que recrea es cultura.

Or did the media make it normal?

The death culture referred to by archaeologists in their studies of pre-Columbian history never really ended; it came up with new codes, new images for new times - the colonialist reaffirmed his cultural dominance while excluding himself from the context that caused it.

Persistent death The dead man makes his claim upon the daily imagination of the Guatemalan - he rises wearing his death shroud and re-boards the same bus upon which he was murdered.

I

t's incredibly obvious: the image, on the front page of Guatemala's “nota roja” newspaper, of a man lying in the street, a woman crying in the background and the neighbors around the body; the pain reflected in the facial expression of the mourners – editors care less about informing the public than they do about selling more newspapers. They enhance the colors, tweak the headline lettering and the tears. It is a marketing game, and the product they're selling is death.

The repetition of these images has negative consequences: our collective consciousness becomes desensitized to the pain of others; the media's necrophilia induces the need to create self-defense mechanisms in order to preserve individual and collective emotional stability; a corpse ceases to be human and becomes part of the scenery, folklore, a bit of community gossip.

Was it always like this?

In 1977 the people of Guatemala's capital were strongly challenged by a bloody event. Two students were kidnapped, and in response family,

friends and society demonstrated in the hope that they would be returned alive. It was an open secret that the kidnapping had occurred because of the students' political activism, but at that moment, the young age of the two students and the heartbreaking image of the mother who begged for the life of her child weighed more heavily upon the collective imagination.

After a few days, the tortured corpse of one of the students appeared. Concerned about the fate of the other student, thousands of people mobilized, the streets overflowing with their numbers; leftist political organizations tried to channel this discontent and clamor to suit their own purposes – this too would have its consequences.

A few days later, the corpse of the second boy appeared, in worse condition than the first. The impact on society was diverse: some confirmed the brutal actions of the state, while others began a take-back process that would manifest itself in a progressive manner to this day.

Sensationalism has made tragedy a commonplace occurrence; it has become a daily gesture, morbidly

The image accompanies the student, the pedestrian, the worker; it redefines their vision of the world, where death becomes a daily companion. The “nota roja” newspaper has become a tool of war, and those who buy it look for the names of the people they know, and if none are found then they can content themselves with Model of the Day photos.

The media, in their processing of images, have sown the seeds of apathy, resignation, and manifest destiny.

The politician lays the dead to rest and offers more death, returning to his press release, to the image of another young man lying in the street; he no longer needs large projects, or government programs, or ideology -- only the promise of death to fire the collective imagination.

It is the communication of wandering death, the press defined as the fourth power, going beyond information, to the recreation of culture itself.

na tarde mientras estudiaba en Xela, decidí tomar una ruta diferente hacia la escuela.

Esperando evadir el tráfico de la 4ª calle, viré hacia una calle más pequeña y me tope con un grupo de niños jugando futbol. Estaban discutiendo si el marcador era 6 a 6 ó 7 a 6. Era una escena muy conmovedora hasta

preparación de los maestros y la falta de recursos”.

Mi amigo dijo “Guatemala es un país lleno de contradicciones, pero también lo es la pobreza”.

Cuando tantos niños no tienen los recursos, por varias razones, para completar la escuela y una pequeña fracción de la población total tiene la

propósitos, entonces, ¿por qué no hacerlo?

En los Estados Unidos, de donde yo soy, la situación no es mejor. También somos bombardeamos cada día con publicidad y hay mucho más para tomar en cuenta. No solamente las compañías de telecomunicaciones nos golpean. Es todo, desde farma-

que eché un vistazo más de cerca a la pelota. Era azul oscuro con un gran logo blanco de Tigo.

Ya había notado la abundante cantidad de anuncios y edificios pintados con los emblemas de las tres compañías principales de telefonía.

Cada día que pasa desde el momento en que salí del avión en la Ciudad de Guatemala, me he percatado más de cuanto puedes caminar en una cuadra sin toparte con al menos un anuncio de una de estas compañías.

Empecé a notar todas las formas que manejan para que su marca esté en las calles, cuando vi el logo en la pelota de futbol. Luego una estadística saltó a mi mente – una que acababa de conocer por un amigo guatemalteco que trabaja en el sistema de educación - 0.05 por ciento de los guatemaltecos tienen acceso a una universidad. Luego aprendí en la Organización para el Avance Intercultural, Bucks County que solo el 30% de los estudiantes indígenas en el área rural llegan a completar el tercer grado, “en parte a la pobre

oportunidad de ir a una universidad, es impresionante ver que los anuncios de estas transnacionales estén en todas partes al mismo tiempo, clavadas en las paredes prácticamente en todos los edificios, incluyendo en las áreas más rurales. Han cambiado el paisaje y me han distraído de lo que me gustaría pensar que es la verdadera Guatemala.

El estar en un país donde no hay muchas opciones, las pocas opciones disponibles sobresalen. Había notado esto también con la compañía de cerveza en Guatemala – Cabro y Gallo claramente tienen el monopolio en el mercado de las bebidas alcohólicas.

No estoy tratando de decir que haya algo malo con la publicidad. Si estas tres compañías están compitiendo solamente entre ellas por la población total guatemalteca, la cual está estimada en 13.3 millones de habitantes en 2009, y tienen todo el dinero necesario para tapizar las tiendas de cada esquina con anuncios de todos los tamaños, formas y

céuticos “de los cuales deberíamos preguntar a nuestro doctor”, hasta comida chatarra dirigida a los niños.

Admito que ya no me doy cuenta de esto. Después de tanta exposición una cosa tiende a mezclarse con otra, algo así como un borroso fondo en una fotografía. Creo que eso es lo que pasa en Guatemala, porque nadie a quien se lo mencioné, lo había notado antes. Pero notar este sorprendente contraste en un país extranjero, ciertamente me hace pensar acerca de los contrastes en mi país. Solamente espero no olvidar seguir prestando atención.

decided to take a different route to school one afternoon last week. Wanting to avoid the traffic on 4a Calle, I turned onto a smaller road and happened upon a group of boys playing soccer in the street. They were arguing about whether the score was 6-6 or 6-7. This scene was endearing until I caught a closer look at the soccer ball. It was dark blue with a big white Tigo logo.

I had already noticed the abundance of signage and buildings painted by the three main telecommunications companies Tigo, Claro and Movistar.

From the moment I exited my plane in Guatemala City and with each passing day I became more aware of how you can´t go one block without being hit with advertising from at least one of these companies.

I had just started noticing all the ways these companies manage to get their name out there when I spotted those boys and their soccer ball. Then a statistic popped into my head - one I had just learned from a Guatemalan friend who works in the education system - less than 1 percent of Guatemaltecos have access to a university. Then I learned from the Bucks County Organization for Intercultural Advancement that only 30 percent of rural, indigenous students complete the third grade, "due in part to poor instructor preparation and lack of resources."

When so many children don´t have sufficient resources, for varying reasons, to complete grade school and a tiny fraction of the total population here has the chance to attend college, it is striking to see the ubiquitous signs of such large multinational companies nailed to the outside of practically every building, even in the most rural areas. They have changed the landscape, and distracted me from what I would like to think of as the real Guatemala.

Being in a country where the choices are not endless makes the few available options stand out much more.

I have noticed this with the beer companies in Guatemala too - Cabro and Gallo clearly have a near total monopoly in the alcoholic beverage market.

Now I´m not trying to say there is anything wrong with advertising.

If these three companies are only competing with each other for all of Guatemala´s population, which was estimated at 13.3 million in 2009, and they have all the money they need to furnish the tiendas on every

In the United States, where I am from, the situation is not much better. We´re bombarded everyday as well with advertising, and there´s much more to take in. It´s not just telecom munications companies we are hit with. It´s anything from pharmaceuticals we should "ask our doctor about" to processed junk food targeted at children.

I admit that I don´t notice the bulk of this anymore. After so much exposure, one thing tends to blend in with the next like the blurry backgrounds in photographs. I guess that´s what is happening here in Guatemala, because no one I mentioned this to had noticed it before. But noticing this striking contrast in a foreign country has certainly made me think about the contrasts in my own. I only hope I don´t forget to keep paying close attention.

Escuela de la calle convierte dólares de turistas en milagros (II). Tracy L. Barnett

continuación me reuní con Guadalupe, quien me contó la historia de cómo se formó la escuela de la calle.

“Yo seguía viendo a los niños en las calles, usando drogas, oliendo pegamento, y me dije a mí mismo, tengo que hacer algo al respecto”, recuerda Guadalupe. Él era un maestro en ese momento en una escuela especial para los jóvenes que trabajaban en puestos de trabajo, y dos de sus colegas, Ubaldo Ruiz y Miguel Quiroa, se sentían de la misma manera. Juntos, decidieron dejar sus puestos de trabajo y empezaron a reunir a los niños como flautistas de Hamelin actuales, dando clases a los niños en las calles. Pronto se les unió un estudiante estadounidense, Michael Shorr, y eran cuatro.

“Fue un buen trabajo el que había declinado, y ahí estaba yo sin ganar nada. Pero nos dio mucha energía estar con esos niños – los ojos de los niños, los rostros de los niños, la necesidad de los niños, y ver a los niños tan pequeños, 6 ó 7 años, oliendo pegamento, es tan doloroso de ver, y nadie hace nada al respecto”.

Los jóvenes comenzaron a hacer divulgación para recaudar fondos para una escuela y un albergue para niños sin hogar, contactando restaurantes para que les donaran alimentos y escuelas de español para las donaciones de dinero y voluntarios. Así fue como encontraron a Gavin Barker, un inglés que comenzó a trabajar con el grupo para ayudar a encontrar maneras de recaudar dinero.

Finalmente se le ocurrió la idea de formar una compañía de viajes para patrocinar los viajes a destinos que en aquella época eran prácticamente desconocidos para los visitantes a Quetzaltenango – lugares como el Lago Atitlán y Tajumulco y el volcán Santiaguito – y donar las ganancias a la escuela. Guadalupe conocía los senderos, por lo que reclutaron a voluntarios y les enseñó las rutas, ahora ellos lo hacen solos.

Los primeros años fueron extremadamente difíciles, sin equipo

ni instalaciones, pero finalmente la gente donó equipo, y se corrió la voz. Más gente empezó a registrarse en los turnos de voluntarios.

La situación se complicaba aún más porque el país estaba en guerra y la gente del área rural era sumamente desconfiada con los extraños. Guadalupe recuerda una vez cuando llegó a un pueblo con un grupo de excursionistas y fue rodeado por los campesinos con palos y machetes.

“Pensaron que éramos guerrilleros y no nos querían allí. Yo hablo Quiché y les expliqué que éramos una organización que mantenía una escuela, les invite a visitar, pero era muy difícil”.

Esos días han quedado atrás.

Ahora con la ayuda de la financiación de organizaciones internacionales, han construido la nueva escuela en Las Rosas, pero la mayor fuente de financiamiento proviene todavía de Quetzaltrekkers.

Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a Guadalupe, el último de los fundadores que permanece y ahora al frente de una escuela viva que promueve la preservación del medio ambiente natural y los valores culturales mayas, que son uno e iguales.

School For Street Children Converts Tourist Dollars Into Miracles (Part II) Tracy L. Barnett

ext I met with Guadalupe, who told me the story of how the Escuela de la Calle was formed.

“I kept seeing children in the streets, taking drugs, sniffing glue, and I said to myself, I have to do something about this,” Guadalupe recalled.

He was a teacher at that time at a special school for young people who were working and two of his colleagues, Ubaldo Ruiz and Miguel Quiroa, were feeling the same way. Together, they decided to quit their jobs and they began gathering the children like modern-day pied pipers, giving classes to the children in the streets.

Soon they were joined by an American student, Michael Shorr, and they were four.

“It was a good job I gave up, and here I was earning nothing. But it gave us a lot of energy to be with the children – the eyes of the children, the faces of the children, the need of the children, and to see the children so small, 6, 7 years old, sniffing glue, it was so painful to see, and nobody was doing anything about it.”

The young men began doing outreach to raise money for a school and a shelter for the homeless children, contacting restaurants for donated food and Spanish schools

for donations of money and volunteers. That’s how they found Gavin Barker, an Englishman who started working with the group to help find ways to raise money.

Eventually he hit upon the idea of forming a tour company to sponsor trips to destinations that at that time were virtually unknown to visitors to Quetzaltenango – places like Tajumulco and Lake Atitlan and Santiaguito volcano – and to donate the proceeds to the school.

Guadalupe knew the trails, so they recruited volunteers and he taught them the routes, and they were on their way.

In the first years it was extremely challenging; they started out with no gear and no facilities, but eventually people donated gear, and word got around. More people started signing up for volunteer shifts.

Making matters more difficult was that the country was still at war and the people in the highlands were extremely suspicious of outsiders.

Guadalupe remembers once when he arrived in a village with a group of trekkers and was surrounded by peasants with sticks and machetes.

“They thought we were guerilleros, and they didn’t want us there. Since I spoke Quiche I explained to them

we were an organization that was supporting a school and invited them to come, but it was very difficult.”

Those days are long gone.

Now with the help of funding from international organizations, they’ve built the new school in Las Rosas, but the bulk of their funding still comes from Quetzaltrekkers.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Guadalupe, the last of the founders to remain and now at the helm of a vibrant school that promotes the preservation of the natural environment and Mayan cultural values, which are one and the same.

He hopes that word about EDELAC and Quetzaltrekkers will spread and it can become a model for others who want to start alternative schools. I share with him that hope.

Construyendo una Economía Solidaria Britt Gordon-McKeon

rma López está sentada en un telar enorme que abarca la sala principal de su pequeña casa, mantiene a su bebé cargado atado a la espalda. Una lanzadera de hilo está volando de ida y vuelta a un ritmo vertiginoso, está sonriendo mientras habla sobre los cambios en su vida desde que pasó a formar parte de la Asociación e Identidad del Pueblo Mam, ASIMAM. "Antes no había ninguna manera de que las mujeres ganáramos dinero.

Ahora trabajamos."

Irma es integrante de ASIMAM, una cooperativa integrada casi en su totalidad por mujeres, que abarcan cuatro municipios de Quetzaltenango. Muchas de ellas, como Irma, elaboran productos textiles en sus casas, otras trabajan en proyectos de procesamiento de chocolate y shampoo. A través de ASIMAM perciben un ingreso, reciben formación, y pueden acceder a pequeños préstamos.

De acuerdo con Florinda Gómez, asesora de ASIMAM, los beneficios son más que financieros, se enfoca también a la mejora de la autoestima y la salud mental de los miembros. "Antes no sabíamos hacer nada. Ahora si sabemos."

Otra experiencia en el altiplano, en Colomba Costa Cuca, más de 40 familias accedieron a tierra y colectivamente gestionan una antigua plantación de café después de una ocupación pacífica de dos años.

Finca La Florida produce café, bananos, macadamia, miel, pescado y otros productos, así como ejecutan un proyecto de eco-turismo, recibiendo a visitantes y voluntarios en la antigua casa patronal de la finca.

Las condiciones económicas en La Florida no son fáciles, pero para Rosaura Mejía, simplemente ser dueña de su propia tierra y tomar sus propias decisiones es una enorme mejora. "Aquí con nosotros se trata de un cambio de vida para las mujeres", dice. "Las otras mujeres que van a trabajar en otras fincas tienen miedo de hablar acerca de sus derechos. ¿Por qué? Porque no es su propiedad, es del patrón.

Aquí es distinto, es nuestra, es para nosotros, es para todos y todas.

Por eso digo que la diferencia es suficiente." La tierra es sobre todo colectiva, y La Florida, al igual que ASIMAM, están dirigidas por una Asamblea General compuesta por todos los miembros, y en una base diaria por una Junta Directiva y una serie de comités elegidos por la

asamblea.

ASIMAM y La Florida, son sólo dos de las 21 organizaciones que conforman la Red Kuchub'al, Red de Comercio Equitativo y Solidario.

Elaboran y comercializan productos agroecológicos como café, textiles, mermeladas y shampoo. El personal de la oficina de Red Kuchub'al en Quetzaltenango, ayuda en la comercialización de los productos de sus grupos, apoya en la planificación socio empresarial, y promueve el intercambio de experiencias entre las asociaciones.

Los productos se venden en una cantidad de tiendas en el Occidente de Guatemala. En Quetzaltenango, Al Natur, en la 13 avenida 8-34A en la zona 1, fue inaugurado en 2008 por Mario Sánchez, tras años de trabajar con los pequeños productores a través de una serie de organizaciones. "Resultó que eran buenos productos agrícolas, después hubo buenos productos transformados, pero no tuvieron un mercado. Por eso tuve la idea de crear Al Natur".

Red Kuchub'al promueve la “economía solidaria," la idea retoma algunos principios del "comercio justo", el movimiento que inició hace 40 años, basado en la certificación de productos socialmente responsable, a la venta principalmente en los países del Norte. Sin embargo, el comercio justo oficial sólo cubre un número limitado de productos, y la certificación puede ser difícil de alcanzar y caro cara para las pequeñas organizaciones. Más allá de eso, Red Kuchub'al busca cambios más amplios a los tradicionales modelos capitalistas de comercio y relaciones económicas, en las cuales países como Guatemala exportan principalmente materia prima que se procesa en otros lugares. "No queremos un sistema que depende de los mercados internacionales", indica José Luis Aguilar, coordinador de Red Kuchub'al. “Queremos un modelo basado en la seguridad alimentaria y que genere empleo rural digno, que impulse el consumo responsable y al servicio de la población local en primer lugar.” www.kuchubal.org

Building A Solidarity Economy Britt Gordon-McKeon

rma Lopez sits at a giant loom that dominates the main room of her small home, her baby strapped to her back. A shuttle of bright thread flies back and forth at a furious pace, she’s smiling as she talks about the changes in her life since she became part of the Asociación e Identidad del Pueblo Mam, ASIMAM. "Before there wasn’t any way for women to earn money. Now we work." Irma is member of ASIMAM, a cooperative made up almost entirely of women in four municipalities surrounding Quetzaltenango. Many of them, like Irma, produce textiles in their homes; others work in projects processing chocolate and shampoo.

Through ASIMAM they earn an income, receive training, and can access small loans. According to Florinda Gomez, adviser of ASIMAM, the benefits are more than just financial; the project improves the self-esteem and mental health of the members. "Before we didn't know how to do anything. Now we do."

Meanwhile, in the highlands near Colomba Costa Cuca, more than 40 families own and collectively manage a former coffee plantation after a two-year peaceful occupation.

Finca La Florida produces coffee, bananas, macadamia nuts, honey, fish, and other products, as well as running an eco-tourism project, hosting visitors and volunteers in the finca's old manor house.

Economic conditions at La Florida are not easy, but for Rosaura Meija, simply owning their own land and making their own decisions is a tremendous improvement. "Here with us it's a change of life for the women," she says. "The other women who go to work in other fincas are afraid to talk about their rights. Why? Because it's not their property, it's the patron's. Here it's different. It's our own, it's for us, it's for everyone. That’s why I say the difference is enough." The land is mostly collective, and La Florida, like ASIMAM, is run by a General Assembly made up of all members, and on a daily basis by a junta directiva and a series of committees elected by the assembly.

ASIMAM and Finca La Florida are just two of the 21 organizations that make up the Kuchub'al Network of Fair and Solidarity Trade.

They elaborate and commercialize agro-ecologic products like coffee, textiles, jams and shampoos. The staff at the Red Kuchub'al office in Quetzaltenango, helps the groups market their products, assists in business planning, and promotes the exchange of experiences between the associations.

Red Kuchub'al promotes a "solidarity economy." The idea includes some principles of "fair trade," the 40year-old movement based on certifying socially responsible products, for sale primarily in Northern countries. However, official fair trade labeling covers only a small number of products, and achieving certification can be difficult and expensive for small organizations. Beyond that, Red Kuchub'al seeks broader changes to traditional capitalist models of commerce and economic relationships, in which countries like Guatemala export primarily raw materials to be processed elsewhere. "We don’t want a system that depends on international markets," says José Luis Aguilar, coordinator of Red Kuchub'al. "We want a model based on food security and fair local labor, which stimulates responsible consumption serving our local people in the first place." www.kuchubal.org

lo largo de la historia de los regímenes corruptos han utilizado la desinformación y la ignorancia para suprimir a las poblaciones. En una era de mejoras a las comunicaciones es fundamental enseñar a la gente que no se conformen en su pensamiento.

Aunque muchas personas están empobrecidas. A Guatemala no le falta tecnología, en cada pueblo o ciudad se ve a los jóvenes, el futuro de este país, hablar por teléfonos móviles e Internet. Yo sabía muy poco de la historia de Guatemala antes de venir acá, sin embargo tuve la oportunidad de acceder a toda la información que se pueda necesitar en línea. Aprendí sobre la guerra civil, los problemas de la economía, la corrupción, educación y violencia. Internet es el futuro, ha cambiado la forma cómo funciona el mundo y marcó el comienzo de una nueva era para la comunicación.

Aunque está claro que muchos guatemaltecos no tienen acceso a la educación, los que sí la tienen, muestran una clara preocupación por los problemas del país. Cuando esta generación madure, se habrán criado en un país que ha mantenido la paz y la estabilidad, y serán capaces de acceder a su historia, no sancionados por un gobierno a través de una lucha desesperada para acabar con el conocimiento de los sótanos de la biblioteca. Una vez que la información este en línea está ahí para que todos la vean, y los jóvenes de este país van a leerla porque es descaradamente obvio para mí que ellos se preocupan por Guatemala, sobre su pasado, presente y su futuro. La comunicación es la herramienta que más puede vencer la ignorancia, el racismo y la corrupción, y es ahora que podemos comunicarnos como nunca antes, es imposible ocultar la verdad a la gente.

hroughout history corrupt regimes have used misinformation and ignorance to suppress populations. In an era of ever improving communications it is crucial to teach people not to conform but to think. Though many people are impoverished, Guatemala does not lack technology, in every town and city one sees young people, the future of this country, talking on mobile phones and accessing the internet. I knew little of the history of Guatemala before I decided to come here, and yet in a moment I was able to access all the information I could ever need online. I learned about the civil war, the problems of the economy, of corruption, of education and of violence. The internet is the future, it has changed the way the world works and ushered in a new era for communication. Although it is clear that many Guatemalans are not provided an education, those that have are clearly concerned about the problems of the country. When this generation matures into the leaders of tomorrow, they will hopefully have grown up in a country that has maintained peace and stability, and they will be able to access their history; not a government sanctioned one or through a desperate struggle to root out knowledge from library basements. Once the information is online it is there for all to see, and the young people of this country will read it because it´s blatantly obvious to me that they care about Guatemala, about its past, present and its future. Communication is the tool that can best end ignorance, racism and corruption, and in this age, where we can communicate like never before, it is impossible to hide the truth from people.

Escuela Primaria de Sepur las Minas

La Escuela de Sepur Las Minas se reactivó en el año 2002. Consta con 6 grados mixtos, de primero a sexto primaria. A esta escuela asisten 30 alumnos, los cuales son los niños y niñas de los trabajadores de la finca y del alrededor. Con edades entre 6 y 16 años. Un sólo maestro enseña en una clase multigrado y bilingüe (español y q´eqchi) y esta situación no permite salir mucho del programa oficial de educación. Sin embargo, la escuela ha podido desarrollarse gracias a diferentes voluntarios. El objetivo principal es proponer actividades variadas, en colaboración con el maestro o la maestra, para desarrollar el espíritu crítico de los niños y mejorar su confianza en sí mismos. Algunas de las actividades de la mañana es cuidar de la clase de 1er grado y ayudar al profesor con actividades prácticas como experimentos de biología, juegos de cartas, lecciones sobre higiene personal y la salud, los viajes escolares, etc. En la tarde puede ayudar con la preparación de las clases y algunos días hay clases de consolidación o de talleres prácticos y creativos. Este trabajo exige un compromiso mínimo de 3 meses y conocimientos avanzados de español.

Departmental Coordination of Physical Education, Special Needs, Sports and Attention to People with Disabilities is a program that offers five areas of care to children, youth and adults with disabilities. These five areas are: physical therapy, occupational therapy, introduction to basic skills, sports and a swimming pool. We also organize occupational workshops. The Primary School of Sepur las Minas has 6 grades. 30 children from 6 to 16 years old attend this school; they are the daughters and sons of farm workers. Only one teacher takes care of a bilingual (Spanish / Q’eqchi’) and multirank class, a situation that prevents him working outside the official educational program. However, the school has evolved thanks to various volunteers. The main aim is to offer, in collaboration with the teacher, varied playful activities that will help develop the critical spirit of the children and improve their self-confidence. Some activities in the morning are taking care of the 1st grade class and helping the teacher with practical activities like biology experiments, card games, lessons about personal hygiene and health, school trips, etc. In the afternoon you can help with the preparation of classes and some days there are consolidation classes or practical and creative workshops. This job asks for a minimum commitment of 3 months and advanced Spanish skills.
