El arte está en las calles, en las aulas, en los parques (aunque sea desalojado, como les pasó a las amigas de la valija y la cobija en la página 20, o perseguido como Banksy), en las aldeas, y en los municipios, en los patios y las casas.

Desde las cuevas de Lascaux pasando por todas y cada una de las grandes civilizaciones que dominaron al mundo, el arte ha ido evolucionando con nosotros. Después de miles de siglos, son las obras de arte las que hablan por los sumerios, egipcios, griegos, romanos, bizantinos, hindúes, chinos, japoneses, mayas. Es su arte el que nos llega y nos habla de sus costumbres. En este siglo el posmodernismo impera en las ideas, y el desencanto está a la orden del día. ¿De qué hablará nuestro arte en unos cientos de años? hablando de griegos y romanos, uno de los cuadros que acompaña a esta nota muestra a la diosa Minerva derrotando a Marte. Minerva la versión romana

de Pallas Athena, la diosa griega de la sabiduría, el coraje, la inspiración, la civilización, la ley y la justicia, las matemáticas, la fuerza y la estrategia; las artes, las manualidades y las habilidades.

Ahí está Minerva o Pallas Athena derrotando al dios de la guerra.

El arte y todas sus figuras han sido siempre una representación de nuestra conciencia e inconciencia. Y a los griegos los tenemos metidos hasta la psique: una sociedad debe enfocarse en cultivar todo eso y más, pues solo así tendremos individuos conscientes y sin miedo a hablar. Probablemente sea algo utópico pero creo firmemente que a través del arte se puede lograr. Y no soy la única. En esta edición les presentamos una serie de proyectos que impulsan el arte en sus comunidades. Los invitamos a sumarse a ellos, o impulsar los propios, este mundo necesita más creativos.

Y hablando de creativos, le damos la bienvenida al equipo a Patricia Macías. ha venido a EntreMundos a colaborar con su inmenso talento en la creación de esta revista, mil gracias. El espacio está acá, siempre estamos buscando nuevas cosas para publicar: artículos, dibujos, fotografías, etc. Todo es bienvenido.

Note

We know that for a long time art and its creation have been dominated by an elite. This is why we seek out stories that show how this domination is cracking.

Art is in the streets, in the halls, in the parks (though it is sometimes removed, as happened to work done by our allies with La Valija y La cobija, who write about their projects on page 21, or pursued like Banksy), in cities and neighborhoods and their patios and homes. Ever since the Lascaux cave scrawls and through every great civilization, art has evolved with us.

Through so many centuries, it is art that speaks for the Sumerians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the hindus, the chinese, the Japanese, the Maya. It is their art that remains, and tells us of their customs. In this century, it is postmodernism that dominates artistic thought, and disillusion is the order of the day. What will our art say for us when we are long dead?

Speaking of the Greeks and Romans, one of the images that accompany this letter depicts Minerva defeating Mars.

Minerva is the Roman take on Pallas Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, mathematics, force and strategy;

the arts, craft and capability. here she vanquishes the god of war.

Art and all its forms have always represented our consciousness and unconsciousness. The Greeks are still with us, down to our psyche: a society must focus itself on cultivating all of what Minerva represents and more, for this is the only way its citizens can become conscious, and able to speak without fear. It may sound utopic, but I firmly believe that art can make this reality. And I`m not the only one. In this issue, we present the reader with a series of projects that encourage artistic expression in their communities. We encourage you to join them or create your own; this world needs more creators.

And speaking of creators, we welcome Patricia Macías to our team. She’s come to EntreMundos to contribute her immense talent to the creation of this magazine. We give her our thanks.

Remember, the space is here; we are always looking for new pieces to publish: articles, drawings, photos, etc. It is all welcome.

Noticias SOBRE Derechos Humanos Lima Oliva Aislado El ministro de Gobernación, Mauricio López Bonilla, informó que el capitán Byron Miguel Lima Oliva, quien purga condena por la muerte de monseñor Juan José Gerardi, fue puesto en un área aislada de la cárcel Pavoncito, luego de haber realizado una supuesta actividad cívica sin autorización de Presidios, en septiembre.

Indicó que Lima Oliva se comporta como que fuera el dueño de la prisión. “No entiende que él no se puede comportar como que si fuera la autoridad, dueña del penal. No se puede quitar ese deseo de protagonismo. Él invita a todo el mundo y eso no podemos permitirlo”, dijo López Bonilla.

El capitán Lima Oliva y su padre, el coronel Byron Disrael Lima Estrada, fueron condenados en julio del 2001 a 20 años de prisión por la muerte de monseñor Gerardi, hecho ocurrido el 26 de abril de 1998.

Desde entonces se encuentra en Pavoncito y su padre recobró su libertad en julio del 2012, por redención de pena.

Juicio por Genocidio La Corte de Constitucionalidad (CC) rechazó una apelación planteada por Efraín Ríos Montt, procesado por genocidio en el área Ixil, y allanó el camino para que el Tribunal Primero B de Mayor Riesgo, conozca el proceso contra el exjefe de Estado y José Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez.

La CC declaró sin lugar un recurso de apelación planteado contra el amparo que el pasado 18 de abril la Sala Tercera de Apelaciones otorgó a Francisco García Gudiel, abogado de Ríos Montt, que había accionado contra su expulsión del Tribunal Primero A de Mayor Riesgo, el primer día del juicio por genocidio.

Violencia contra Defensoras Un recuento realizado por el Instituto para las Mujeres en la Migración (IMUMI), reveló que Guatemala es el país de Mesoamérica que reporta el mayor índice de agresiones y amenazas contra defensoras de los derechos humanos, pues concentra el 30 por ciento de los casos.

Según el diagnóstico del IMUMI, en el 2012 fueron registradas 414 agresiones contra mujeres que defienden los derechos humanos en México, Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador; en un 87 por ciento, las violaciones fueron cometidas por actores estatales.

El 30 por ciento de los casos fue registrado en Guatemala, el 29 en Honduras y México, respectivamente, mientras que El Salvador muestra el número más bajo, con el 12 por ciento.

De acuerdo con el análisis del Instituto para las Mujeres en la Migración, 38 defensoras de los derechos humanos fueron asesinadas entre el 2010 y el 2012; la mayoría de los casos continúan en la impunidad.

Un 38 por ciento de las víctimas defendían la tierra, el territorio y los recursos naturales cuando fueron amenazadas o agredidas, el 15 por ciento demandaba el derecho a una vida libre de violencia, en tanto que un 11 por ciento ejercía su derecho a la libertad de expresión.

San José Nacahuil Familiares de las víctimas de la masacre ocurrida en septiembre, en la aldea de San José Nacahuil, San Pedro AyamLpuc, señalaron como responsables a elementos de la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) de haber ejecutado a las 11 personas. “Minutos después de que los mataran, la autopatrulla estaba en el parque”, interrumpió un vecino, quien agregó que los policías llegaron al lugar de forma sospechosa. El viceministro de la cartera del Interior, Eddy Juárez, interrumpió y corrigió que al momento de ser alertados, los agentes de las fuerzas de seguridad estaban ubicados en la colonia Jocotales, lo que provocó que fuera abucheado.

Los vecinos exigieron a las autoridades dar con los responsables y descartaron que el ataque haya sido producto de pandillas rivales en la zona. Gobernación reconoció que es comprensible que la población “sospeche” de la PNC, por lo rápido que se cometieron los asesinatos; ante ello indicaron que la Oficina de Responsabilidad Policial (ORP) y la Inspectoría inició una investigación contra cuatro agentes.

Radios Comunitarias El diputado Carlos Mejía, Presidente de la Comisión de Pueblos Indígenas, efectuó óademás varias interrogantes al Fiscal del

Po su parte el Fiscal Noé Moya, explicó que ellos actúan de acuerdo a lo establecido en el Decreto 94-96, Ley General de Telecomunicaciones, que establece como “hurto de bienes muebles” a las radios que trabajan sin un Derecho de Usufructo, emitido por las autoridades correspondientes y hasta el momento existen más de 300 denuncias al respecto.

Femicidio

De enero a junio de este año, un total de 52 personas han sido condenadas por femicidio; sin embargo, la cifra no representa ni la mitad de las condenas que se emitieron durante todo el año pasado, cuando se cerró con 283. Esta situación preocupa a instituciones de derechos humanos, pues coinciden en que se envía un mensaje de impunidad a la sociedad.

Datos proporcionados por el Centro de Información, Desarrollo y Estadística Judicial (CIDEJ) del Organismo Judicial (OJ), revelan que de enero a junio del presente año han ingresado a los juzgados correspondientes más de 10 mil 654 casos. De enero a diciembre del año pasado se recibieron 27 mil 450.

A criterio de Norma Cruz las cifras son “alarmantes”, ya que se trata de casos que llegan al OJ, por lo que supone que las denuncias que ingresan al Ministerio Público pueden ser hasta “tres veces mayor”.

“Desafortunadamente, no todos los casos llegan a la justicia, porque su mayoría se queda en el MP por falta de seguimiento e investigación y esto ocasiona que las mujeres no denuncien”, refiere la activista.

Minería

En conferencia de prensa, líderes comunitarios, el alcalde y vecinos de Tectitán, Huehuetenango, indicaron que rechazan la instalación de un destacamento militar en ese municipio y que se extiendan licencias a mineras, tanto de exploración como explotación de minerales, por considerar que dañan los recursos naturales.

Captain Lima Oliva and his father, Colonel Byron Lima Estrada Disrael, were sentenced in July 2001 to 20 years in prison for the death of Bishop Gerardi, which occurred on April 26, 1998. Since then, he has been in Pavoncito, although his father was released in July 2012 after his sentence was reduced.

Genocide Trial The Constitutional Court (CC) rejected an appeal filed by Efrain Rios Montt, indicted for genocide in the Ixil area, and paved the way for the First Court B of High Risk to hear the case against the former head of state and José Mauricio Rodríguez Sanchez.

The CC declared that the appeal brought against the protection granted last April 18 to Gudiel Francisco Garcia, Rios Montt’s lawyer, by the Third Board of Appeal, was without grounds. Garcia was expelled from the First Court A of Higher Risk on the first day of trial for genocide.

They indicated that the Office of Police Accountability (ORP) and the Inspectorate has initiated an investigation against four officers.

Mining Community Radio

Project Payaso´s ethiopian sibling: one Love awareness theater children began performing acrobatics on the streets of Awassi, Ethiopia in 1998. One Love has established a theater training center, an orphanage, and a youth campus where children from diverse backgrounds come together for education and counseling. Las historias se han convertido en su mayor herramienta para motivar la solidaridad entre personas y unir a aquellos que compartían una historia en común. En su caso, la gente afectada por la minería, la desposesión, deslocalización y represión por parte de las multinacionales mineras y los gobiernos que las apoyan.

Desde 1970, una serie de compañías multinacionales mineras han despojado a las tierras guatemaltecas de sus recursos, y a la población de sus derechos. El marido de Angelica, Adolfo Ich, fue asesinado por el jefe de seguridad de Hudbay Nickel. Su comunidad Maya, La Unión, fue desalojada de sus hogares.

Ella fue testigo de cómo sus amigos y las comunidades que la rodeaban eran echados de sus tierras ancestrales. Sin embargo, la historia de Angélica no es un caso único. Su historia la comparten comunidades indígenas por todo el mundo. hay muchos que han luchado y lo siguen haciendo, mientras siguen siendo despojados de sus tierras.

La primera vez que escuché la historia de Angélica, las lágrimas corrieron por mi rostro. Su historia trae consigo el trauma, el dolor y las injusticias de las que había sido testigo, y al mismo tiempo, su admirable sentido del humor y humanidad reconfortan al instante.

El increíble liderazgo de Angélica y su dedicación por educar e inspirar a otros, se demuestra con sus visitas a las comunidades afectadas y sus acciones movilizadoras para conseguir un cambio político mejor. Es gracias a la gran ayuda de Angélica y sus historias, que actualmente algunos de los casos están siendo juzgados y la responsabilidad legal podría apuntar finalmente a una gran compañía minera canadiense, la Hudbay Minerals, actualmente bajo proceso en las cortes judiciales de este país. Aun así, aún queda un largo y duro camino por recorrer e historias por contar.

(en la fotografía de arriba) cuentan una historia muy similar. Ellas son vigiladas y amenazadas por sus vecinos, quienes apoyan las acciones mineras. A sólo unos pasos de su humilde casa, una valla es lo único que las separa del territorio minero. Fue en sus tierras donde pude ver a un hombre vestido con el uniforme naranja y blanco de Goldcorp, jugando futbol al otro lado de la valla, donde solo unos minutos antes había una profunda zanja en la tierra. La mina Marlin sigue funcionando al día de hoy, mientras su historia es intencionalmente ocultada.

Más bien, expresa al que escucha la importancia de su historia, animándole a responder con un propósito y a contribuir de manera significativa.

La responsabilidad es compartida, y nosotros, los que escuchamos, necesitamos reconocer que ciertas historias merecen y requieren acciones deliberadas y un seguimiento, si de verdad estamos interesados en crear un mundo mejor. Y puede llegar a ser tan simple como recontar esa historia, lo que me trae hasta este punto.

María recuerda un tiempo en el que su agua era limpia. Recuerda un tiempo cuando los vecinos se ayudaban unos a otros. Ahora, cuenta historias sobre esos días, como si fueran cuentos para niños de hadas madrinas. habiéndose negado a vender sus tierras, María recibió un disparo en el rostro. Esta inconcebible acción, solo salió a luz al ser contada por María y su madre. Ellas no escogieron ser narradoras de historias, se vieron forzadas por las circunstancias a serlo. La mina ha dado empleo a cientos de sus vecinos. cientos que inevitablemente se han vuelto contra ella y su familia, ya que hoy en día aún se niegan a vender sus tierras. A pesar de las continuas amenazas, riesgos, sufrimiento, represión, violaciones y barreras sociales y económicas a las que se enfrentan, continúan contando su historia.

Lo que yo re-aprendí en Guatemala este verano fue esto:

cuando Angélica me preguntó ¿Por qué debería contarte mi historia?, no quiso decir que su historia no mereciera ser compartida, sino que quizá, quien

Somos responsables de compartir las historias de otros. Las historias no son solo para ser leídas o estudiadas, para los que escuchan a profundidad, las historias tienen la habilidad de ir directas a nuestros corazones, y convertirse en acciones responsables. Aunque, algunas historias pueden ser compartidas con facilidad, otras, las que de verdad necesitan protección, merecen una escucha profunda y responsable. La historia de Angélica y Doña Diodora, pertenecen a esta clase de historias. Y tras escuchar estas historias, el oyente esta en la obligación de contarlas y difundirlas hasta donde le sea posible.

the very first words i heard from angelica choc shocked my body into responding: “who are you? why should i tell you my story?”

Angelica is no stranger to storytelling.

For years she has used stories to unite communities inside and outside of her country. Stories have become her great tool to foster solidarity between peoples and bring together those who share a common story; in her case, peoples affected by mining, dispossession, dislocation, and repression at the hands of multinational mining and their government that sponsors it.

Since the 1970’s a string of multinational mining companies have effectively stripped Guatemalan land of its resources and its people of their rights.

Angelica’s husband, Adolfo Ich, was murdered by the head of hudbay Nickel’s security forces. her Maya community, La Union were forcibly removed from their homes. She has watched as other friends and communities around her have been raped and evicted from their ancestral lands. Yet Angelica’s story is not entirely unique. her story is shared by indigenous peoples worldwide.

There are many who have struggled and continue to struggle, while being torn from their land.

The first time I heard Angelica’s story, tears streamed down my face. her story carries with it the trauma, pain and injustices that she has witnessed, but her admirable sense of humor and humanity can warm you instantly.

Angelica’s incredible leadership and dedication to educate and inspire others is shown by her visits to affected communities and mobilizing actions towards greater political change. It is with great help and thanks to Angelica’s storytelling that some cases are being held trial today and legal responsibility may be pinned onto the canadian mining company, hudbay Minerals in canadian courts. Still, a long and hard road of responsible storytelling exists.

Only 500 miles away in Department of San Marcos , Dona Diadora and her daughter Maria (Maria, pictured on the other page) tell a similar story. They are under constant watch and threat from surrounding neighbors who support mining efforts. Only steps away from her humble homestead, a tall, wired fence is the only thing that separates her from the mining territory. It was on her land that I witnessed men in orange

and white Goldcorp uniforms relax and play games of soccer on the opposite side of the fence, while only minutes away a deep gash in the earth exists; the Marlin Mine continues to function day in and while her story goes purposely unnoticed.

Maria remembers a time when their water was clean. She remembers a time when neighbors helped one another.

Now, she tells stories of those days as if they were children’s fairy tales. having refused to sell their land to the mine, Dona was shot in the face. This inconceivable action has only fuelled her mother and Maria’s storytelling.

They did not choose to become storytellers, but circumstance has forced them to become one. The mine that has employed hundreds of her neighbors. hundreds that inevitably turned against her and her family, because to this day, they still refuse to sell their land. Despite the ongoing threats, risks, hardships, repression, violation, economic and social barriers that they face, they continue to tell their story.

When Angelica asks the question ‘Why should I tell you my story?’, she is not suggesting that her story is not worth sharing, or that the listener is not worthy of hearing it. Rather, she is expressing to the listener the importance of her story,, encouraging them to respond purposefully and contribute meaningfully. The responsibility is shared and we, the listeners, need to recognize that certain stories require follow up and deliberate action, if we are in fact interested in creating a better world. It can be as simple as re-telling a story, which brings me to this point. what i re-learned this past summer in Guatemala was this: We are responsible for sharing each other’s stories.

Stories are not primarily for reading or studying, but for deep listening that have the ability to transfer direct to the core of our beating hearts and turned into responsible action. Although some stories can be shared with ease, others, the ones that need real-tending to and safe-guarding, deserve deep listening.

Angelica and Dona Diadora’s stories, are these kind of stories. After hearing those stories, the listener must be moved to tell them and spread them as far and as wide as they can possibly reach.

Robin Newman led two teams on 6-week trips through Guatemala with Operation Groundswell, a backpacking organization based out of North America. As a trip leader for youth she engaged in service-learning projects, solidarity work and critical discussions on issues of human rights, environment, privilege and politics.She had the absolute honor and pleasure of listening to many stories. charlotte Flohman La respuesta que repetidamente recibimos de los poderosos es exasperante: ´sin comentarios.´ Por medio de estas dos palabras que parecen tan insignificantes, se puede prácticamente ignorar las preguntas y a los que preguntan. `Sin comentarios` o aun el silencio se usa para defenderse; si no hay comentario para criticar, a veces las críticas desaparecen.

Aun así, y afortunadamente, hay muchos quienes comentan y protestan intensamente contra quienes tratan de ignorar a los que preguntan. El arte visual ha sido desde el principio de la historia moderna una de las herramientas más útiles para los indignados. Mientras los medios sociales han resultado ser indispensables para la logística, varias manifestaciones recientes han mostrado que el arte que el pueblo hace para aquellas manifestaciones dura mucho más que cualquier evento. ciertamente, el arte de protesta es generalmente el arte que ocupa un espacio público. Es probablemente más fácilmente reconocido en el grafiti.

Llamado “la voz del hombre moderno”, el graffiti es un comentador silencioso y pues se hace poco a poco sinónimo de la resistencia pública o levantamiento.

Aunque en Guatemala es todavía en gran parte impopular entre los residentes de los edificios marcados, las salpicaduras espontaneas embellecen cada vez más las fachadas coloniales desmoronadas. El grafiti sirve como una forma de expresión bastante anónima y por eso provee comentarios sobre asuntos que no se pueden discutir de otra manera.

En la capital, grupos de arte callejero, como h.I.J.O.S., usan el grafiti para protestar y promover varias causas en espacios públicos. con el graffiti han expresado críticas contra varios negocios de minería y también compañías multinacionales como Pepsi y Ginsa por varios lugares de la ciudad y también sobre la maquinaria y los logotipos de negocios. La falta de memoriales públicos es otra motivación para artistas quienes conmemoran eventos históricos o individuales, por medio del arte callejero. Algunas obras también representan las luchas diarias de muchos guatemaltecos, mostrando la violencia, la pobreza, o la explotación. como sea, las expresiones coloridas se han vuelto imposibles de ignorar.

La protesta está presente también en el trabajo de artistas como Regina Galindo. Su trabajo muy controvertido – incluso la obra “¿Quien puede borrar las huellas?” en la cual Galindo caminó entre dos edificios del gobierno en la capital con sus pies mojados en sangre humana – nos hace recordar que necesitamos hablar para evitar que la historia se repita.

Aquella medida extrema, una protesta contra la candidatura de Rios Montt a la presidencia en 2003, puede mostrar la dificultad de criticar en el clima político actual. Mucho del trabajo de Galindo es estremecedor o difícil de enfrentar, pero es precisamente este efecto que hace el trabajo tan poderoso.

Aníbal López – también conocido como A-152167 – es otro artista conceptual guatemalteco cuyo trabajo en la esfera público ha ganado aclamación internacional. Para llamar la atención a las tasas altas y crónicas de analfabetismo y al acceso desigual a la educación en Guatemala, el dejó una tonelada de libros por la Avenida

La prevalencia del arte de protesta indica que es posible criticar, aun bajo un gobierno represivo. La controversia sobre el trabajo de artistas como Galindo y López, combinado con su renombre internacional, significa que unas de sus críticas han sido oídas.

Pero no expresan solamente sus propias voces por medio de su arte, sino las voces de los muchos quienes desean el cambio. Esta representación hace el arte de artistas diferentes un testimonio colectivo invaluable que muestra la opinión pública, así que es muy importante para los individuos continuar con la crítica, hablar por los que no pueden hablar, y promover la libertad de expresión del país.

charlotte Flohman It is infuriating how often we hear people of power answer interviewers´ questions with, “no comment.” Through these two seemingly insignificant words, the powerful can ignore questions and their questioners. Saying “no comment” or simply remaining silent is a method of self-defense; if there is no comment to criticize, criticism often wanes.

Fortunately, however, there are many who do comment, and they protest fiercely against being ignored. Visual art has been one of the most potent tools for the indignant in modern history. While social media have proven themselves indispensible in terms of logistical organizing, recent protests have shown that the art people create for these events lasts far longer than the events themselves.

Indeed, protest art is usually public art that occupies a public space (often illegally). It is probably most easily recognized in graffiti. Dubbed “the voice of the modern man”, graffiti is a silent commentator and, as such, is gradually becoming synonymous with public resistance or uprising.

Although in Guatemala it is still largely unpopular with residents of tagged buildings, spontaneous splashes of colour increasingly brighten crumbling colonial facades. Graffiti serves as a reasonably anonymous form of expression and therefore attracts comments on issues that elsewhere cannot be freely discussed.

In Guatemala city, street art groups such as h.I.J.O.S. actively use graffiti to protest and promote in public spaces. They

have expressed criticism against several mining companies as well as multinationalbusinesses such as Pepsi and Ginsa with graffiti placed around the city as well as on machinery and company logos.

The absence of public memorials to certain events and individuals has motivated other artists to commemorate them through street art. Some work also makes reference to the daily hardships of struggling Guatemalans, graphically alluding to extreme violence, poverty or exploitation. Whatever the subjectmatter, colourful expressions of public sentiment have become impossible to overlook.

Expressions of protest can also be found in the work of celebrated artists like Regina Galindo. highly controversial pieces such as “Quien puede borrar las huellas?” in which Galindo walked with her bare feet dipped in human blood between two government buildings in Guatemala city, serve to remind us that we must speak in order to prevent future repeats of past atrocities. The extremity of this piece, which protested against Rios Montt’s candidacy for president in 2003, might be an indicator of how difficult it is to voice criticism in the current political climate. Much of Galindo’s work is shocking or even painful to consider, but it is precisely this brutal physicality that makes it so undeniably expressive.

Guatemalan conceptual artist whose public-space work has gained international acclaim. To draw the public´s attention to cronically high illiteracy rates and the inequality of access to education in Guatemala, he dumped one tonne of books onto the capital’s Avenida de la Reforma, which created an impressive rush-hour debacle.

The prevalence of protest art shows that it is possible to express oneself, even under a repressive regime. The controversy surrounding the work of artists such as Galindo or Lopez, coupled with their international renown, means that some of their commentary has been heard. But it is not just their own protest they express through art; it is the voice of the many who feel that things must change. This is what makes artistic protest an invaluable collective testimony to popular opinion. It is therefore all the more important that individuals continue to express themselves to give voice to those who cannot and to promote freedom of expression in Guatemala.

¿Qué es arte? La vieja pregunta sin respuesta Melissa Vlach

Muchos de nosotros identificamos el arte con las grandes obras pictóricas que podemos encontrar en los museos – La Mona Lisa, Las lilas de agua de Monet y el Nacimiento de Venus. Estas imágenes tienen un significado tan icónico que podemos observarlas incluso sin pensar. Las aceptamos como grandes obras, porque nos dijeron que lo eran. Si pensamos en que es el arte, se convierte en algo mucho mas difícil de definir.

Florencia, La última cena de Da Vinci, el David de Miguel Ángel, son solo una muestra de los incontables ejemplos de historias bíblicas expresadas a través del arte, que han llegado hasta nosotros. Además los fondos que apoyaban la creación de estas obras, venían directamente de la Iglesia, aún incluyendo la venta de favores que provocaron acusaciones de corrupción, no se puede negar que estos trabajos son deslumbrantes tributos a Dios.

Las expresiones artísticas humanas empezaron hace mucho tiempo, como podemos comprobar gracias a las pinturas rupestres encontradas en cuevas por todo el mundo. Goblekin Tepe, monumento arqueológico situado en Turquía, que cuenta con una gran colección de piedras talladas, que fueron creadas por lo menos en el 9000 a.c. Las piedras están decoradas con varios animales, unidas en círculos. El sitio fue creado unos 1000 años antes de que la población local se dedicara a la agricultura y domesticaran animales, y 6000 años antes de que apareciera la escritura. Aún hoy, los arqueólogos piensan que pudieron formar parte de un templo, una forma quizá de comunicarse con sus dioses y honorar a sus muertos. Estos grabados fueron parte del intento de explicar algunos de los mayores misterios del universo.

El arte puede ser usado también como transporte de mensajes sociales. Puedes llamarlo propaganda si lo deseas, pero estas imágenes pueden ser usadas para reclutar apoyo en ciertas causas, o conseguir apoyo social para un líder en concreto. Muchos murales mayas, muestran a sus lideres en actos heroicos, incluso desafiando a los dioses, lo que podríamos llegar a considerar una gran campaña de relaciones publicas en la actualidad.

Desde entonces una gran mayoría del arte ha estado unido a la expresión religiosa.

Desde la Antigua Grecia a Buda, artistas de todo el mundo han tratado de honrar a través de su trabajo a esa fuerza superior, que llamamos Dios. Muchas imágenes creadas en la Europa de la Edad Media y el Renacimiento, pueden ser incluidas en este grupo. La puerta del Paraíso de Ghiberti en

Por otro lado, el arte puede ser usado como canal para simpatizar con los mas pobres y desamparados. Un ejemplo de ello seria la obra Las espigadoras de Millet. En esta obra, el autor muestra a campesinos, que recogen lo que otros no quieren, mostrando esa realidad y apoyándoles con su arte de alguna forma. Aunque las clases mas altas criticaron la pintura, viéndola como un recordatorio de la violencia y el terror que sufrieron durante la Revolución Francesa.

En la actualidad, la definición de arte ha cambiado. El arte ya no es siempre “bonito”.

Los museos de arte modernos, están llenos de lienzos en blanco, o esculturas creadas a partir de basura, y así incontables trabajos que desean demostrar algo, pero que

pueden que dejen a los mas aficionados rascándose la cabeza intentando encontrar un significado a sus obras.

En 1917, Marcel Duchamp presentó un orinal en una de sus exhibiciones en Nueva York. Aunque Duchamp, que ya era un artista de renombre, presento el trabajo bajo un nombre falso. La obra fue debatida y rechazada por sus compañeros, aunque el autor siguió defendiendo que el objeto constituía una obra de arte.

Al final, el arte es tan difícil de definir porque sus formas y representaciones son incontables. El arte puede ser usado para defender una postura social o política, explorar los misterios del universo, vender objetos, buscar la fama e incluso expresar alegría o pena. El arte es un reflejo de la visa y a la vez una influencia para esta.

Thomas Merton dijo: “El arte es capaz de hacer que nos encontremos a nosotros mismos, y al mismo tiempo que nos perdamos.” Nos ayuda a entender nuestra realidad y relacionarnos con las experiencias de otros. La vida no se puede tratar de explicar o resumir, y por lo tanto el arte tampoco.

First thoughts often fly to the icons – the Mona Lisa, Monet’s water lilies, the Birth of Venus. We see them without thinking. We accept them as great works of art because we are told that’s what they are. Yet if we really think about it, art as concept melts.

The visual arts stretch back into deep time. Goblekli Tepe, an archaeological site in modern day Turkey, furnished carved stones that date to about 9000 B.c. The stones were decorated with various animals and arranged in circles about 1,000 years before the locals turned to agriculture and domestication of animals, and 6,000 years before writing appeared. Leading archaeologists feel that it was a temple, a way perhaps to honor gods and cope with death. The stylized carvings were a community´s meditation on the mysteries of the universe.

Indeed, religious expression dominates the arts. From the ancient Greeks who depicted the feats of their gods to the innumerable visions of the Buddha, artists through history have sought to honor higher powers through visual art. Most iconic images from Middle Age and Renaissance Europe have the same roots. Ghiberti’s bronze doors in Florence, Da Vinci’s Last Supper, Michelangelo’s David, and countless others are examples of well-known Biblical stories expressed as art works that are still revered today. Perhaps ironically, these works were generally funded by the great temporal coffers of the church, which to many would

come to represent corruption and ultimately led to the Reformation. Dirty money notwithstanding, these works were conceived to pay tribute to God. On a related note, art has long been used to sway the minds of the masses. call it propaganda if you wish, visual media have been a key tool to convince people to support a leader or get behind a cause. Ancient Mayan murals routinely displayed their rulers performing heroic feats, sometimes even as gods, a good PR campaign if there ever was one.

The flip side of the coin uses the psychological power of image to condemn the plight of the poor and downtrodden.

Frenchman JeanFrançois Millet’s The Gleaners is a shining example. The work sympathizes with and humanizes French peasants, the lowest of the low, those picking up the scraps that others have left behind.

The upper class predictably condemned the painting; they saw a threat to their social dominance and a harkening to the violence of the French Revolution.

In today’s world the definition of art has changed. Art is not always pretty.

Museums of modern art are filled with blank canvasses, sculptures of throwaway items, and countless works which are supposed to make a statement, but which may leave the casual museum-goer scratching his head.

In 1917, Marcel Duchamp submitted a urinal turned on its side to an exhibition in New York. Although

Duchamp was a well-known artist, he submitted the piece under a false name. The work was then debated by his colleagues and eventually rejected, but Duchamp claimed that his repurposing of the object constituted art. (Duchamp and his comrades-inart sought to rub the West´s hoity-toity face in the absurdity of a society that caused the meaningless butchery of the world´s greatest man-made disaster in history (aside from the conquest of the Americas): The War to End All Wars, which would be subsequently topped by its sequel, World War II).

In the end, as Duchamp might say while smoking a pipe and pissing on canvas, this exercise is meaningless.

Art cannot be defined because its forms and uses are endless. Art can be used to make a statement, to explore the mysteries of the universe, to sell things, to seek fame and glory, to express great sadness or joy. Art is a reflection of life and an influence on life.

Thomas Merton said, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” It helps us to understand our own reality and to relate to the experiences of others. It cannot be defined, because neither can life.

Identidad “Turismo Artístico” Indígena: ¿Oportunidad de mercado o erosión cultural?

“Turismo Artístico” definido por primera vez por Erik Cohen como “productos de arte étnico producidos para una audiencia externa. Audiencia normalmente poco familiarizada con la cultura, y el criterio auténtico de la sociedad que lo produce.” Si caminas a través de los mercados en la ciudad de Antigua o en la calle Santander de Panajachel, es esto exactamente lo que vas a encontrar: puestos y más puestos repletos de colorido “arte turístico” dirigido a turistas que buscan comprar una pieza “auténtica” de cultura guatemalteca.

Dado el papel fundamental que el turismo juega en la economía de Guatemala, los regalos de arte turístico representan una gran oportunidad para los artistas indígenas. No sólo como un nuevo mercado. Este turismo es una oportunidad de conservación cultural; ya que los artistas indígenas comparten a través de su arte, sus tradiciones, con un público externo. Dicho esto, el programa medioambiental de las Naciones Unidas destaca que estas prácticas pueden también conllevar una “erosión cultural” debido a “la modificación de los bienes culturales” –ya que estos bienes que normalmente tienen un alto significado cultural, son modificados con el objetivo de adaptarse a las demandas turísticas, provocando así profundas repercusiones culturales.

Un elemento fundamental de esta “erosión cultural” es la tendencia de los artistas de alterar sus prácticas tradicionales para alcanzar las demandas del mercado.

Esta documentado que por ejemplo la comunidad Makonde del Este de

África, adaptó su tallado tradicional de madera y materiales para adaptarse al mercado turístico y colonial, hasta el punto de que el tallado contemporáneo tiene una mínima relación con el arte original. El caso de las molas – las blusas típicas que llevan las mujeres Kuna en Colombia – son otro buen ejemplo, ya que los diseños tradicionales que reflejaban la visión Kuna, han disminuido ya que los productores se han centrado en satisfacer las exigencias del mercado turístico. ¿Qué tan similar es la situación en Guatemala? ¿Podrían los güipiles, cortes y chalinas perder su significado cultural para adaptarse a este nuevo mercado turístico?

Podemos argumentar que los artesanos que proveen a los turistas, están siendo emprendedores inteligentes, aprovechándose de las demandas de este nuevo mercado, que puede llegar a representar una importante fuente de ingresos, aportando una base financiera para el desarrollo económico de la comunidad. Esta línea de pensamiento ha llevado a la creación de asociaciones tejedoras por todo Guatemala, incluyendo más de tres en Quetzaltenango.

Sin embargo, el “arte turístico” puede ser una base débil para este desarrollo sostenible, debido a la naturaleza inconsistente de la industria turística y a los constantes cambios en sus consumidores, ambos factores pueden dejar a los artesanos en una posición muy vulnerable de recesión.

Además, este nuevo mercado puede rápidamente saturarse, al incrementarse el numero de artistas que buscan sacar beneficios de esta nueva oportunidad.

Podría decirse que este puede ser el caso de Xela, con múltiples cooperativas de tejidos y otro tipo de negocios, todos dirigidos al mismo y limitado mercado turístico y ofreciendo productos muy similares. Cuando en realidad, la mayoría de los turistas, con un conocimiento limitado de cómo debería ser un producto original, no pueden diferenciar entre un trabajo hecho a mano o uno realizado a máquina, y simplemente se decantan por aquel que les ofrece el precio más bajo. Como resultado, los artesanos se ven obligados a rebajar sus precios para ser competitivos, participando así en una “carrera de fondo” donde nadie consigue un beneficio razonable. ¿Dónde, entonces, se marca la línea entre la producción de arte turístico y la erosión cultural? ¿Dónde acaba esta línea tan fina entre conseguir beneficios y la dependencia creativa que provoca este mercado turístico tan inestable? ¿Cómo se pueden manejar estos nuevos mercados para que de verdad apoyen la tradición cultural de estos artesanos, en vez de explotar su trabajo en una competencia sin fin?

Estas preguntas no tiene una respuesta fácil, pero merecen una consideración critica por parte de los consumidores y productores, especialmente en Guatemala, donde esta industria turística esta en alza.

La respuesta es mayormente crítica debido al crecimiento de este “turismo étnico”, unido al uso de las nuevas tecnologías e Internet, ya que ambos fenómenos favorecen la extensión de los mercados turísticos de arte indígena, y su conversión de fenómenos local a fenómeno global.

ideNtitY indigenous ‘tourist art’: market opportunity or cultural erosion?

‘ Tourist art’ was first defined by Erik cohen as “ethnic art and craft products, produced for an ‘external’ audience, namely an audience that is typically unfamiliar with the culture and authentic criteria of the producer’s society.” Walk through many of Antigua’s indoor markets or down calle Santander in Panajachel, and that’s exactly what you’ll see: stalls upon stalls of colourful ‘tourist art’ targeted at tourists looking to buy an ‘authentic’ piece of Guatemalan culture.

Given the significant role that tourism plays in Guatemala’s economy, tourist art presents an important opportunity for indigenous artisans. Not only are tourists a relatively new market, tourist art offers an opportunity for cultural preservation as indigenous artisans share their traditions with the external world. That said, the United Nations Environmental Program notes that these practices can also lead to “cultural erosion” due to “the commodification of cultural goods” – whereby goods that traditionally had deep cultural significance are altered to fit tourist demands, with deep cultural repercussions.

One particular element of ‘cultural erosion’ is the tendency for artisans to alter their traditional practices to meet market demands. It is well-documented that the Makonde peoples of East Africa adapted their traditional woodcarving subjects and materials to suit colonial and tourist markets to the point that contemporary carvings bear minimal relation to the original art. The case of molas – the blouses worn by Kuna women in columbia – are another good example, as their designs traditionally

reflected the Kuna worldview but their spiritual content has decreased as producers have focused on tourist markets. how dissimilar is the situation in Guatemala? could guipiles (blouses), cortes (skirts), and chalinas (shawls) lose their cultural significance in the same way through commodification to suit the tourist market?

It can be argued that artisans who cater to tourists are being smart entrepreneurs, taking advantage of new market demands that can serve as an important income, providing a financial base for community economic development. This thinking has led to the creation of scores of weaving associations throughout Guatemala, including more than three in Quetzaltenango.

Nonetheless, ‘tourist art’ can be a tenuous economic base for sustainable development because of the inconsistent nature of the tourist industry and the ever-changing fads in the consumer world, both of which can leave artisans vulnerable to recession.

Further, the tourist art market can become quickly saturated as increasing numbers of artisans seek to take advantage of this new opportunity.

This has arguably become the case in Xela, with multiple weavers’ cooperatives and various other businesses all catering to the same limited tourist market with seemingly comparable products. Indeed, with limited knowledge and appreciation for quality materials and handiwork, most tourists cannot tell the difference between skilled handicrafts and machine-made products, and simply

look for the cheapest deal. As a result, artisans are forced to lower their prices in attempts to stay competitive, creating a ‘race to the bottom’ whereby virtually no one makes any reasonable profit and in which quality and authenticity suffers.

Where, then, do we draw the line between ‘tourist art’ production and cultural erosion? Where is that fine line between taking advantage of a new opportunity and creating dependency on the unstable tourist market? how can these markets be managed to celebrate artisans’ cultural traditions, rather than exploiting their work through spiraling competition?

These questions have no easy answers but merit critical consideration from both consumers and producers, especially in Guatemala where the ‘tourist art’ industry is booming. The answers are increasingly critical because of the growth of ‘ethnic tourism’ and internet-based technologies, both of which have transformed formerly local indigenous ´tourist art´ markets into global networks.

cuenta cuentos “La Valija y La cobija”, tiene un objetivo principal y es el de impulsar y fomentar la lectura en los niños por medio del uso lúdico de los distintos recursos literarios (cuentos, trabalenguas, fábulas y adivinanzas), transmitiendo además valores y actitudes positivas.

Desde el 2010, se unió este dúo dinámico (Karen Fernández y Delmy Felipe), para trabajar en los medios de comunicación de Quetzaltenango, convencidas de la importancia de crear espacios para los más pequeños, escuchar las opiniones de los niños, mantenerlos informados y no solo “entretenidos”.

A finales del año 2012 surgió la inquietud de contar cuentos y compartir con los niños de una forma directa. “hoy la valija no solo está llena de historias y libros que recorren las calles de Xela, ahora también llevamos lindas experiencias compartidas con chicos y grandes y muchos sueños e ilusiones de cómo la lectura podrá cambiar la vida de muchos guatemaltecos, sabemos que la cobija nos transportará a un sin número de lugares para compartir y llevar alegría a los niños por medio de un libro.” aseguran las encargadas de este proyecto “con la lectura viajamos, experimentamos, imaginamos, aprendemos, reflexionamos, en fin… gracias a ella podemos enriquecer el alma y la mente. Es por eso que estoy muy orgullosa de lo que estamos

haciendo, l l e v a r l e historias a los niños, ver sus ojos de asombro y alegría cuando todo tiene un final feliz” afirma Delmy.

Por otro lado Karen no tiene la menor duda de que aquello que se hace con amor y pasión siempre se hace mejor, Delmy y Karen, promotoras del proyecto.

The Suitcase and the Blanket cuenta cuentos: La Valija y La cobija (which translated roughly as ´Tell Stories: The Suitcase and The Blanket´) is an organization dedicated to encourage children to read, through playful use of various literary resources that encourage positive values and attitudes, like short stories, tongue twisters, fables, and riddles.

In 2010, the dynamic duo behind the group (Karen Fernández and Delmy Felipe) partnered in Quetzaltenango´s media world to create spaces for the littlest Quetzaltecos, hear their opinions, and keep them informed as opposed to simply entertained.

By the end of 2012, the duo was committed to finding more direct ways to tell stories to and share lessons with Quetzaltenango´s children.

“Today La Valija isn´t just full of stories and books that circulate through Xela… we´ve also had wonderful shared experiences with kids and grown-ups and many dreams and hopes about how reading can change the lives of many Guatemalans, and we know that our efforts will lead us to too many places to count to share and bring happiness to kids through a book,´ stated the pair.

Delmy said, ´With reading we travel, we experience, we imagine, we learn, we reflect... thanks to reading we can

enrich the soul and the mind.

That´s why I´m so proud of what we´re doing, bringing stories to the children, seeing their eyes widen with surprise and happiness when everything works out.´ On her end, Karen has no doubt that what one does with love and passion works better. ´This project means an opportunity to do something for the land I love.

I´m 100% convinced that our children are an invaluable treasure and to be able to help them acquire a habit that will serve them forever always excites me. I´m grateful to God to be part of this project and I´m sure it will go far.´ La Valija y La cobija doesn´t just pass on stories written by other authors, but also uses its own stories adapted to the special context of Guatemalan children.

The story ´La Gran Aventura´ (´The Great Adventure´) is a good example, the main message of which is that we all need to do what makes us happy, knowing that what Guatemala needs is a happy society.

La Valija y La cobija recently launched La Biblioteca Ambulante (The Traveling Library) so that the more children can enjoy reading in various locations around the city, regardless of their educational or socioeconomic background. These entrepreneurial women plan to move the traveling children´s library every first Sunday of

the month, spreading the opportunity for kids to explore different kinds of fun and colorful books. ´This initiative is a reality because of how much love we have for the children. This is why we are calling on individuals and book stores to support us with children´s books so we can have a strong repertoire of books. Vessica Galería de Arte trabaja desde 1999 con proyectos de educación, promoción, desarrollo de talleres, y cursos de dibujo y pintura.

En el 2010 la galería abrió un espacio para exposiciones temporales y permanentes de artistas quetzaltecos y de todo el país. Por su experiencia, Vessica sabe que el arte es una herramienta que ayuda al desarrollo de la expresión personal, lo que mejora también la salud mental de cada individuo. Eso es empoderamiento, una parte fundamental del desarrollo social, y que nos permite trabajar por un cambio social positivo tan necesario en Guatemala.

Algunas de nuestras iniciativas incluyen programas como: APOYANDO SUEŇOS AZULES En este programa se trabaja con niños, niñas, y jóvenes con discapacidades. con apoyo de instructores y terapeútas especializados, les damos a los niños y jóvenes las capacidades materiales y técnicas para poder expresar sus pensamientos.

Personas invidentes reciben un apoyo especial, con talleres para el desarrollo de su expresión personal y visitas guiadas en las que pueden tener contacto directo con las

Vessica Art Gallery has been working in education, promotion, workshop development, and courses in drawing and painting since 1999.

In 2010, Vessica opened a gallery space for temporary and permanent exhibitions to showcase visual art by artists from Quetzaltenango and around the country. With help from specialist instructors and therapists, we give them the physical and technical skills to express their imaginations. The blind receive special support, which includes workshops to develop their personal expression and guided tours in which they come into direct contact with artwork.

EDUcATION IN ARTISTIc EXPRESSION Aimed at children and young people, this

programme develops drawing techniques with a learning process that teaches discipline, creativity, and selfesteem. It also creates future aficionados of Guatemalan art and art in general, which will in turn benefit the next generation of young visual drawing artists. The programme encourages students to exhibit their work in individual and group exhibitions, and helps them make contacts with other cultural institutions to further their artistic path.

VOLUNTEERS We accept Guatemalan and foreign volunteers who wish to work with children and young people in various areas of art, especially visual art. Most volunteers work in urban and rural schools in southwestern Guatemala where poverty is common and resources are scarce. In this context, volunteers encourage good study habits as well as positive behaviour.

In order to develop our work, the Vessica Gallery invites individuals, businesses, and public and private institutions to donate funds and materials. Donations benefit not only young artists from Quetzaltenango and throughout the country, but also society as a whole since our programmes cultivate scholarship,

teatRo Proyecto Payaso “un mundo donde todas las personas en todas sus diversidades cuentan con las herramientas y con un contexto propicio para transformar sus realidades y lograr un bienestar pleno.”

Esa es nuestra visión, la de Asociación Payasos Atz’anem K’oj. Desde el año 2001 trabajamos a través del arte y la expresión creativa para lograr este propósito.

En este camino de más de 10 años pudimos descubrir cómo el arte nos ayudó a trazar un rumbo hacia la concreción de esta visión. comenzamos como “Proyecto Payaso” acercándonos a comunidades rurales a través del teatro callejero para hablar de VIh. … pero ¡hablar de VIh es hablar de sexualidad! ¡Y hablar de sexualidad es un tema tabú! Por eso el payaso, la payasa. Porque a través del humor y de este personaje que tiene “inmunidad diplomática” para decir lo que quiera, logramos empezar a transmitir información, a responder interrogantes sobre sexualidad, a abrir un espacio de diálogo frente a temas tan importantes como inaccesibles para muchos.

Y seguimos caminando, comprobando que en las comunidades nos esperaban y ¿por qué? Porque hablamos ‘otro idioma’, el idioma del teatro, de la imagen, el movimiento, el sonido, el humor y también la palabra. Porque fuimos accesibles, logramos un intercambio más humano con quienes veían nuestros espectáculos.

Y es divertido también. Y creativo. Y nos desafía… porque no se trata sólo

de ‘hacer algo artístico’, sino de respetar el valor del arte y con ello el compromiso con la calidad estética e ideológica de lo que hacemos. Porque si no es de calidad, es poco probable que nuestros espectáculos lleguen al impacto que buscamos.

Y en el 2009 descubrimos el Teatro del Oprimido (TO) que nos aportó un aspecto diferente. En lugar de ser nosotros montando los espectáculos sobre los temas que nos resultan relevantes, creamos las piezas de teatro con las personas afectadas por una problemática específica. comenzamos con un grupo de personas que viven con VIh y nos asombró lo que descubrimos: el arte, el teatro en este caso, posibilitó que el grupo se exprese de manera auténtica sobre las situaciones injustas que viven y que transitan de un espacio de silencio y ocultamiento a uno nuevo, de denuncia y protagonismo. A través del Teatro Foro (la técnica del TO que más utilizamos) el grupo genera y presenta su obra de creación colectiva frente a un público que lejos de ser una audiencia pasiva se transforma en “espect- actores”, público activo que es invitado a participar y proponer en escena posibles alternativas de transformación de la situación presentada. Así, el espacio artístico nos mueve a la acción social concreta, sirve de promotor de denuncia, de debate colectivo y de protagonismo en la búsqueda de propuestas de cambio.

El arte como medio para la transformación. El arte para ser más exactos, más precisos en lo que queremos poner sobre la mesa y para abrir un debate horizontal y participativo.

Por otra parte, el arte permite expresión.

Muchas veces, a través del teatro, de un mural, de una propuesta lúdica, muchas personas se expresan más y más sinceramente que mediante una ponencia frontal donde la palabra está en manos únicamente de un orador, y a la vez posibilita una expresión más democrática que la palabra escrita, la cual muchas personas, en especial mujeres y niños no manejan con comodidad.

Es por eso, que trabajamos y seguiremos trabajando a través del espacio artístico para fortalecer protagonismo de grupos vulnerables, para formar activistas y para investigar y desarrollar metodologías que podamos compartir con más personas y grupos que compartan la visión de que “muchos otros y mejores mundos son posibles”.

tHeateR Payaso Project “a world in which all people in all their diversity can count on positive strategies and a positive context to transform their realities and achieve well-being.”

This is our vision. As the clown Association Atz`anem K`oj, we have worked toward this vision since 2001 using art and creative expression. This journey of over ten years has allowed us to discover just how much art can accomplish for a vision like ours.

We started as `Proyecto Payaso` (Project clown), traveling through rural communities using street theatre to talk about hIV… but talking about this means talking about sexuality! And sexuality is a taboo theme.

This is why we clown. Through humor and the `diplomatic immunity` of the clown, we could express what we wanted, and so we began to be able to communicate information and answer questions about sexuality and open a space for dialogue on topics that are crucial but off-limits for many people.

We are still working, and this proves that communities are eager to see us. Why? Because we speak another language, a language of theatre, of image, of movement, of sound, of humor and also of words. We are accessible, and so we create meaningful human exchanges with the members of our audiences.

And it’s fun, too. And creative. And it challenges us, because it`s not just a matter of `doing something artistic,` but also of respecting the power of art and our commitment to esthetic and intellectual excellence. Because without this excellence, we probably couldn’t have the impact we aim for.

In 2009, we discovered the Theatre of the Oppressed (Teatro del Oprimidx – OX), which

brought us a new perspective. Now, instead of putting on shows we design on themes that we think are relevant, we co-create theatre with people directly affected by problems specific to them. We started with a group of hIV-positive people and what we discovered surprised us: art – theatre in this case – allowed this group to genuinely express itself about the injustices it experiences, which moved them from a sphere of silence and hiddenness into a new space of revelation and empowerment. Through Theatrical Forum – the technique of the Theatre of the Oppressed – a group presents its collective creation to a public that becomes far more than just a passive audience. The public becomes spec-actors, who are invited to participate in scenes and propose different ways for the scenes to resolve themselves.

This way, the artistic space propels the presentation toward concrete social action and promotes revelation, collective debate, and empowerment around hidden issues in the method`s search for proposals for change.

From our experience, we know that art creates channels for alternative expression.

Art `touches` people`s emotions before it engages their pre-existing thoughts and prejudices.

People can often express themselves more sincerely through theatre, murals, or playful proposals than through formal speech that gives all attention to a single orator. These methods are also a more democratic means of expression than writing, because they give voice to the many, especially women and children, who can`t use this tool.

This is why we work and keep working through artistic space to empower vulnerable groups, develop activists, and investigate and develop ways to share with more and more people the vision that `many alternative and better worlds are possible.`

Voces cOLEcTIVAS Quetzaltenango y el arte hoy ciudad de la Imaginación El municipio de Quetzaltenango, históricamente ha representado una suerte de tanque de conocimientos y de expresión de las artes, una especie de polo cultural que ha generado y atraído un número importante de artistas e intelectuales que han contribuido a la creación del sujeto Quezalteco y a la construcción de un sentido de “ciudad”.

artistas, centros culturales, colectivos artísticos representa una oportunidad sin precedentes, que es importante aprovechar a partir de una visión artística y política.

Quetzaltenango and art today ciudad de la Imaginación

Quetzaltenango has long been a treasure trove of artistic expression and consciousness as well as a cultural center that has attracted and nurtured a number of prominent artists and intellectuals who have helped create the Quetzalteco identity and pride.

Art is a reflection of the material and psychological social contexts that create it, and has served as a mirror for the many diverse artistic and cultural initiatives that have taken place in Xela.

While these initiatives have involved a wide array of subjects and methods, many have had something important in common: a critical attitude toward the conservatism of the traditional fine arts community that holds so much sway in the city and the country.

Organizations like “Metáfora”, the theatre collective “Armadillo”, or the defunct

political art collective “Movimiento Emergente” represent this critical attitude toward the established order, the centralization of power, and the stranglehold the fine arts community has on the art world. Groups like these resist the status quo by consciously refusing to absorb or reflect the hierarchical nature of their environment.

For city of the Imagination (ciudad de la Imaginación, or cI), the present diversity of artistic initiatives, art collectives, and cultural centers represents an unprecedented opportunity, which Xela must make the most of to develop its artistic and political vision. city of the Imagination promotes the search for convergence between groups and space for interaction, and addresses the fact much of the public of the city only passively interacts with art by encouraging individuals to be more

Voces cOLEcTIVAS arte, robo y resistencia: la historia de la cooperativa de tejido en cotzal Mateo Schwartz

42 mujeres indígenas ixiles, miembros de la cooperativa de Tejidos cotzal, sufrieron un robo el mes pasado, y necesitan tu apoyo para lograr poner sus vidas en orden otra vez. Tras 27 años de esfuerzo, trabajo duro y éxito, la puerta de la cooperativa fue forzada la noche del 12 de agosto.

Materiales de costura, productos terminados y su computadora fueron robados. La cooperativa estaba recaudando fondos para estufas, cuando la noticia del robo sorprendió a sus miembros y a los que apoyan la organización. Se informó a la policía sobre lo ocurrido, pero el sistema de justicia en Guatemala es muy complicado. Al día de hoy no hay aún sospechosos o señales de esfuerzo por parte de las autoridades por encontrar a los culpables.

San Juan cotzal es un pueblo de tamaño medio, en lo alto de las montañas del triángulo de Ixil, en el departamento de Quiché. Su población es indígena Ixil y su lengua es el Ixil. Esta región sufrió mucho durante la guerra civil que durante 36 años asoló Guatemala. El 40-50% de los habitante de cotzal murieron a causa de la violencia, la tortura y la enfermedad, hasta que los acuerdos de paz fueron firmados en 1996.

Trágicamente, el área es reconocida por haber sufrido uno de los genocidios más duros en la historia del país.

La cooperativa de Tejidos cotzal se fundó en 1986, como una ventana de resistencia talentosa frente a la guerra. La forman 45 mujeres, que usan el método de cintura tradicional para tejer sus productos, utilizando normalmente tintes naturales. La cooperativa es un signo de esperanza para los supervivientes de la guerra, así como un pilar de fuerza para San Juan cotzal. Las más jóvenes aprenden a tejer de la manera tradicional desde los cuatro años.

Mientras que el arte occidental se centra en el talento individual, la costura tradicional es la expresión de comunidades enteras, generación tras generación. Patrones complicados, colores llamativos y caracteres simbólicos, tejen la identidad de las personas que han sobrevivido una tras otra al imperialismo, la modernidad y la guerra.

art, Robbery and Resilience: the story of the cotzal weaving cooperative Mateo Schwartz

If you people can do something to save our organization it would be a blessing for all of the women here. Thank you for sharing in our pain and our tragedy, may God bless you…” -Pedro Marroquin, coordinator of the cotzal Weaving cooperative 42 indigenous Ixil women of the cotzal Weaving cooperative were robbed last month and need your support to put back the pieces of their lives. After 27 years of struggle, hard work, and success, the cooperative’s door was broken open on the night of August 12th. Weaving materials, finished products and their computer were stolen. The cooperative was in the process of raising money for wood-saving rocket stoves for its members when this news shocked the weavers and their supporters. A police report was filed, but the justice system in Guatemala is unwieldy. At this point there are neither suspects nor signs that the government is committed to finding the perpetrators.

San Juan cotzal is a medium sized town, high in the mountains of the Ixil triangle, in the department of Quiche. The people of cotzal are indigenous Ixil and speak the Ixil language. This region suffered tremendously during the 36 year civil war in Guatemala. 4050% of cotzal’s residents died from violence, torture and disease by the time the peace accords were signed in 1996. The area is recognized as one of the hardest hit by the

genocide of indigenous people by the Guatemalan government that took place during the conflict.

The cotzal Weaving cooperative was formed in 1986 when widows from the war organized their weaving talents into a powerful show of resilience. There are 45 women involved, and they use the traditional backstrap loom method to weave their products, which usually utilize natural plant dyes.

The cooperative is a sign of hope for the survivors of the war and is a pillar of strength and empowerment for San Juan cotzal.

Young weavers learn to weave as early as four years old. Whereas much western art is focused on individual creativity, traditional weaving is the artistic expression of an entire community, generation after generation.

Intricate patterns, powerful colors and symbolic characters weave the identity of a people that have survived wave after brutal wave of imperialism, modernity, and war.

Kain Lingenfelter– TRAMA Textiles Kain es seguramente el voluntario más joven (solo tiene 17 años) en recibir este título de “voluntario del mes”. Trabaja desde marzo de 2013 en TRAMA Textiles, Asociación de mujeres por el desarrollo artesanal del tejido en telar de cintura, realizando su labor como voluntario durante las tardes, después de asistir a sus clases en el colegio. Tras pasar solo unos minutos con este joven tan despierto se puede ver lo positivo que es y como su energia se contagia a los que estan a su lado. Kain es bilingue, siendo hijo de madre chapina y padre estaduoidense Actualmente la asociación cuenta con ocho voluntarios, pero en un principio Kain estaba solo y era el encargado de realizar casi todas las tareas donde se necesitaba ayuda, desde la comunicación y comercialización del producto, hasta ayudar en la tienda. En definitiva siempre dispuesto a colaborar en lo que Orelia y Amparo, las encargadas de la asociación, le pedían. Tras estos primeros meses, actualmente es el Coordinador de Voluntarios de TRAMA Textiles. De su experiencia como voluntario Kain desctaca el ambiente de trabajo diario con las mujeres de la asociación. Su experiencia con TRAMA le ha ayudado à decidir que quiere estudiar Comercio y Promociòn o Relaciones Internacionales en la universidad. Esperemos tener noticias pronto sobre su brillante futuro.

Kain is certainly one of the youngest volunteers to be named Volunteer of the Month. He has worked since March of this year with TRAMA Textiles (also called the Association of Women for Artisan Development). In just five minutes speaking with this bright-eyed young man, you can tell what a positive person he is and how much his energy can encourage the people around him. He is bilingual and bicultural, as his mother is Guatemalan and his father is American.

He works afternoons every day after his high school classes. Eight volunteers currently support TRAMA , but when Kain started with the organization he was its sole volunteer. As such, he helped with almost everything, from communication and marketing to manning TRAMA`s store. He was permanently willing to help wherever Orelia and Amparo, his supervisors, decided he was needed. After months of hard work, he became the Volunteer Coordinator, and helped expand TRAMA`s program. Kain especially appreciates the atmosphere at TRAMA and the women he has worked with. His positive experience here has helped him decide that he wants to study business and marketing or international relations in college.
