Season 2026: Transformation and Magic

Welcome to Entertainment Venues Season 2026, a year of transformation and magic and my very first in this role. It’s a joy to share this season with you, one that celebrates the power of performance to move us, surprise us and remind us who we are.

Every show in this program, in some way, speaks to the idea of change… of growth, of seeing the world through new eyes, of rediscovering what brings us joy. That theme feels especially close to my heart right now.

I grew up in the cane fields of Far North Queensland, in Mena Creek, a rainforest and waterfall town just south of Cairns, where the hum of cicadas mixed with the sound of my dad and his brother rehearsing in their local cover band under our house. I remember sitting on the stairs of that old Queenslander, listening and realising that art could transform even a humid, ordinary Thursday night into something electric and alive.

At university in Townsville, I started my own covers band - there were three girlfriends, one very patient drummer and an unshakable belief that we could take on the world. We played Divinyls, Pat Benatar and Joan Jett at every two bit bar that would have us. That spark grew into women in docs, an original duo that travelled the highways of Australia, wore out our old Telstra van and even made it all the way to Austin, Texas, to play South by Southwest. We played everywhere, including the Tamworth Country Music Festival more than once and learned how music connects people no matter where you are.

About fifteen years ago, I felt another shift and this time toward theatre. I began writing and performing one-woman musicals to tell my stories: Rosa, where I travelled back in time to meet my Italian grandmother on a Sicilian beach; Banging on the Door, a comedy about the sometimes ridiculous world of IVF; and All Fired Up, which lit up Edinburgh Fringe 2025 with a celebration of happiness through the power of an 80’s mixtape.

Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of helping shape arts programs and venues across regional Australia; from the Tanks Arts Centre and CPAC in Cairns, to MONA FOMA in Hobart with Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes fame, to launching the Darwin Comedy Festival. Each experience reminded me that regional audiences are among the most passionate, loyal and generous in the country.

And now, here in the gentle hills of Tamworth, my beautiful star-dog and I have found a new rhythm and a new creative home.

Together with Entertainment Venues small but mighty team, we’ve built a 2026 season that feels like a mirror. It reflects transformation, connection, joy and courage, complete with the wrinkles, scars and laugh lines that only come with experience. You’ll find stories that make you laugh out loud, music that stirs your soul and moments that stay with you long after the curtain falls.

This season is a celebration of who we are as artists, audiences and a community that believes in the power of live performance to transform an ordinary night into something unforgettable.

We would like to sincerely thank Woodleys Motors for their wonderful support as our Season Partner over the past three years. Their generosity and commitment has been instrumental in helping us deliver outstanding entertainment to our community. As we move into Season 2026, we’re excited to welcome Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as our new Season Partner and we are delighted to continue our valued relationship with Woodleys Motors in their new role as Platinum Partner. We also extend our appreciation to Quest Tamworth, CH Boutique Hotel, Joblink Plus, and my personal favourite restaurant and bar, The Pig and Tinder, for their continued and generous support. With these important partnerships, we look forward to a dynamic and inspiring Season 2026, filled with remarkable performances and a strong sense of community.

Whether you’re a long-time subscriber or member, or stepping into the theatre for the first time, I hope this season reminds you of the beauty of change, the magic of connection and the simple joy of sitting together in the dark, waiting for the lights to come up.

Love Lock choreographed by Melanie Lane

Somewhere between ten and fourteen choreographed by Tra Mi Dinh

Where light, love and movement collide

Sydney Dance Company returns with a triple bill of bold and captivating new works, offering Tamworth audiences an evening of extraordinary contemporary dance.

Spell, by internationally acclaimed choreographer Rafael Bonachela, explores five distinctive rituals – “spells” that merge music, light and movement into a striking theatrical experience. Set to an evocative score ranging from Ólafur Arnalds to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and featuring designs by Kelsey Lee and Damien Cooper, Spell is dance at its most powerful and precise.

Inspired by the power of love stories, Love Lock, by choreographer Melanie Lane, reimagines the love song, crafting a dynamic, futuristic folk dance that reflects both the joy and complexity of love. With striking costumes by Akira Isogawa and a score by Clark, this work brims with energy and imagination.

Finally, Somewhere between ten and fourteen offers a poetic study of dusk - a luminous ode to change, transformation and the fleeting beauty of light.

Something long asleep has decided to wake up

Far beyond the outskirts of the big city, near a tiny town that nearly everyone forgot, lay a dry creek bed of no special significance. Once upon a time it had been called Washpool Gully. But the world had moved on from insignificant things and no one had time for dry creek beds. Except in Washpool Gully something was stirring. Shaken by the rumble of engines and darkening of the sky, something long asleep had decided to wake up.

Combining old-fashioned storytelling with contemporary puppetry and miniature sets, The Riddle of Washpool Gully is a reimagined tale of Australian mythology about the incredible creatures that might still live in the uncharted corners of our vast country.

Get together with some of your wine loving friends and… be led through a wine tasting with one of Australia’s best comedians.

Merrick Watts AN IDIOT'S GUIDE TO WINE

Wine enthusiasts and comedy lovers, mark your calendars!

Merrick Watts isn't just a comedian, he's also a qualified wine expert who judges at some of the most prestigious wine shows around the country. He also has an incredible number of qualifications in being an idiot.

Throughout the evening, you'll taste six standout Australian wines, personally handpicked by Mez. He'll share tasting notes and plenty of highly questionable wisdom. It's part wine masterclass, part stand-up comedy and 100 percent fun.

Having toured the show across festivals in Australia and beyond, An Idiot's Guide to Wine has entertained thousands. Some even claim they've learned something, though Merrick insists that's purely coincidental. It's wine. It's comedy. It's a good time guaranteed. Whether you're a seasoned sipper or just in it for a laugh, join us for this year’s Taste Tamworth Festival celebrations at the iconic Tamworth Town Hall - this show has something for everyone.

APlace in the Sultan’s Kitchen (or How to Make the Perfect OnePot Chicken Curry) isn’t your everyday theatre show – it’s part concert, part storytelling, part home-cooked meal and its part of the 2026 Taste Tamworth Festival

Musician and theatre-maker Joshua Hinton takes us straight into his family kitchen, filling the stage with songs, yarns and the mouthwatering smell of his grandmother’s famous chicken curry simmering away.

Along the way he shares childhood memories and family folklore passed down the generations, transporting the audience from the backstreets of Sri Lanka and a schoolyard in Iran, to a farm in South Africa, a bustling Brisbane restaurant and finally, his own home in Wollongong. It’s about family, love, loss and that search we all know - finding where you truly belong.

And the best bit? Every ticket comes with a serve of (grandma) Mehmeh’s curry. Good food, good stories and good company and that’s Tamworth to a T.

For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.

The New York Times proclaims PUFFS, "A FAST-PACED ROMP through the 'Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.' For POTTERphiliacs who grew up alongside Potter and are eager to revisit that world, PUFFS exudes a jovial, winking fondness for all things Harry!"

This clever and inventive play "never goes more than a minute without a laugh" (Nerdist) giving you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers "who are so lovable and relatable, you'll leave the theatre wishing they were in the stories all along" (Hollywood Life). Their "hilariously heartfelt!" (Metro) and epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.

Following sell-out seasons across Australia, the team behind The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child return with songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3 and up - and their grown-ups...

PONTY POOL

A play by Tony Burgess based on his cult horror novel

If words could kill!

In the sleepy Ontario town of Pontypool, something terrifying is spreading—fast. A strange virus is infecting the townsfolk, leaving its victims confused, violent and ultimately… speechless.

From the safety of a basement radio station, shock-jock Grant Mazzy and his small team begin reporting on the chaos outside. But as the unsettling truth becomes clear, they realise that the very words they broadcast might be the key to the virus itself.

Gripping, claustrophobic and laced with dark humour, Pontypool takes audiences on a chilling journey where language becomes deadly and communication itself could be the end.

A psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat—daring you to listen, but warning you to think twice before you speak.

Join us on Friday 7 August for our Gala Opening Night. Foyer doors open at 6pm for complimentary nibbles and a drink, a small presentation at 6:45pm, followed by the show at 7:30pm. Dress code: Semi-formal

he sermon on the mount returns to our stages for a victory lap as Jonathan Biggins – co-creator and star of The Wharf Revue and one of Australia’s favourite comic actors – transforms into the visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser, Paul Keating

Exploring the former PM’s landmark political achievements and personal obsessions, The Gospel According to Paul takes the light on the hill and shines it on a man who grew up in the Labor Party at the knee of Jack Lang, approached economics as an artform and demanded we confront the wrongs of our past. This production from Soft Tread Enterprises captures Keating’s eviscerating Question Time wit and wraps it up in a Zegna suit.

With fresh takes on Keating’s recent media moments and zeitgeist zingers, no scumbag is safe in this show, not even our humble narrator.

A brilliant tribute — Mark Shelley is Roy Orbison.

FOCAL POINT AUSTRALIA

Experience the wonder of Roy Orbison in this brilliant theatrical portrayal. You will find yourself believing you are in his presence, transported back in time, reliving the emotion of each of his songs & the stories of his life.

Mark Shelley is simply brilliant in his characterisation of Roy. He not only has the vocal range & tone to honour his songs, he also has the sensitivity & artistic ability to ‘be’ Roy.

Without doubt, this is the definitive portrayal of Roy Orbison - the man, his music & his life.

Only the Lonely, Running Scared, Sweet Dream Baby, Candy Man, Blue bayou, In Dreams, Anything You Want, Crying, Workin for the Man, Penny Arcade, Pretty Woman, many more.

From his initial success in the 1960s to the resurgence of his career in the 80s, Roy Orbison’s voice remained remarkable, communicating an emotional intensity not experienced in popular music before or since. His songs conveyed vulnerability, love, loss & fun. His performance was unique, simple & powerful.

See page 86 for details

Orbison’s life was littered with personal tragedy & career highs & lows. His wonderful resurgence in popularity in the late 80s through his legendary Black & White Night Concert, his solo album Mystery Girl & the formation of the supergroup The Travelling Wilburys was a fitting final chapter for such a creative genius.

Based on Characters Created by Charles Addams

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky!

The world’s favourite gothic family takes to the stage in The Addams Family Musical.

Each year, Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch gather with the ancestors in the family graveyard for their annual celebration of life and death. But this year, Uncle Fester stops the ancestors from returning to their graves— because the Addams’ way of life is about to be turned upside down.

Wednesday Addams has fallen in love with a boy from Ohio and his parents are coming to dinner. Suddenly two worlds collide, with Gomez and Morticia desperate to keep the family together while Pugsley, fearing he’s losing his sister, plots some mischief of his own. Add in Grandma’s potions, Fester’s unlikely romance and a raging storm that traps both families together and you have one hilariously dark night. Through the chaos, comedy, passionate tangoes and surprising moments of truth, everyone is compelled to grapple with love, loyalty and acceptance.

Full of big laughs, catchy songs and a heart-warming message, The Addams Family Musical reminds us that “normal” is vastly overrated.

Numerous writers and artists have borrowed and adapted the famous story from Goethe’s plays and Berlioz’s opera to Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray and Brian Cranston’s television hit Breaking Bad. Explore the origins of the extraordinary story and what the interpretations show us about our attitudes to sin, pleasure and the afterlife.
