From the
Theatre Director THE DIAMOND SEASON Experience Every Facet
A diamond – a multi faceted gem stone. Our Season in 2016 is exactly that – a diamond of entertainment where every facet is a different piece of theatre for you to experience. Seeing a piece of live entertainment is an experience like no other – it makes us feel, think, reflect and ultimately embrace life. Like a diamond, every show can be viewed so differently by one person to the next. Live theatre can ignite discussion and conversation - it makes us connect and communicate. In 2016, 27 events, made up of local and touring productions, are on offer across the Capitol Theatre, Tamworth Town Hall and TRECC. There are two great ways to get involved: Subscribe, which is great for those who like the same seats as well as planning ahead, and Membership which is great for those who might like the benefits of subscribing but the flexibility throughout the year. See page 60 for more information. We are thrilled to offer a season that supports both the wonderful work of Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music, Tamworth Dramatic Society, Tamworth Musical Society, the 2340 Big Band, Ballet Stars Tamworth and the Tamworth RSL Brass Band as well as bringing a range of respected companies and artists such as The 7 Sopranos, Mirusia, Opera Australia, CDP, Hit Productions, Monkey Baa, Bell Shakespeare, Queensland Theatre Company and Taik Oz. Capitol Theatre Tamworth sits within the Entertainment Venues Division of Tamworth Regional Council, along with Tamworth Town Hall and Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC) and it is my privilege to be at the helm of a fantastic team. We aim to deliver a consistent level of service across these three wonderful community assets. Thank you to all our presenting partners, media partners, and to Tamworth Regional Council for their commitment to this proud community asset. Finally, thank you for your involvement and support of the theatre by just buying a ticket and attending a live show.

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here. William Shakespeare
Tamworth Dramatic Society presents
A postcolonial romance Director Daniel Gillett
From the team that brought you A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2014, comes The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Years ago, Prospero and his daughter, Miranda, were exiled to a magical paradise in the New World. Bent on revenge, Prospero conjures a storm to shipwreck his brother and the other men who banished him. What follows is a calamity of love, drama, and intrigue – set to some of Shakespeare’s most compelling verse. The Tempest is a clash of the Old World and the New: an examination of what it is to be a refugee in an otherwise perfect world; and a poignant reminder of the responsibilities of power. An Evening of 3 One Act Plays Directors Lynn Stahlhut Natalie Creighton Kitty Humble
All the fun, frustration and frivolity of the theatre highlighted in three eye-opening comedies by three diverse directors. This Is A Play by Daniel Maclvor, explores the actor’s inner monologue during a performance, contrasting what the audience sees with what the actors are really feeling. What is that actor thinking while they’re leaning in for the big kiss, delivering their emotional monologue, or even as they’re holding a bowl of soup? The Actor’s Nightmare by Christopher Durang, shows every actor’s fear of walking unprepared in front of an audience, when an accountant is mistaken for an actor’s understudy and forced to perform a play for which he doesn’t know any of the lines. Boise, Idaho by Sean Michael Welch is a clever comedy. A couple at a cafe has their lives imagined -- aloud -- by a stranger at a neighboring table, as though he were the narrator of a novel. When the couple decide to play along, reality and fiction intertwine in amusing fashion. “O, Beware, My lord, of jealousy; It is the green ey’d monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on” Act 3 Scene 3

Bell Shakespeare’s
by William Shakespeare
Love, Jealousy and Vicious Passion Director Peter Evans Designer Michael Hankin Lighting Designer Paul Jackson Assistant Director & Fight Director Nigel Poulton Cast Ray Chong Nee Joanna Downing Alice Keohavong James Lugton Huw McKinnon Elizabeth Nabben Yalin Ozucelik Michael Wahr Edmund Lembke-Hogan
A violent exploration of the thin line that separates love and jealousy, Othello is a relentless journey of vicious passion. A warrior on the fields of war, felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous rage when he is betrayed by his military brother-in-arms, the cynically destructive Iago. One of William Shakespeare’s most famous and passionate tragedies, Othello will be directed by Bell Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Peter Evans, in a gripping production that will touch audiences to their core, as envy is a weapon wielded with brazen savagery, and the complex contradictory nature of humanity is tested.

A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous (or infamous) characters, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The show follows green-skinned star Elphaba from birth to college and through the life-changing events which eventually label her “wicked,” introducing spoiled rich girl Glinda, local prince and heartthrob Fiyero and even the Wizard of Oz himself. A cautionary tale about love, friendship and trust, Wicked effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every story.
