How wonderful that you are visiting Enschede. Welcome to the largest city of Overijssel. In 2025 we celebrate a milestone that has formed our city and our community for 700 years.

MAYOR ROELOF BLEKER

WE CELEBRATE A MILESTONE’

Enschede received city rights in 1325. In this anniversary year Enschede 700, we do not only look back on our rich history, but we also look forward to a joint innovative future.

The theme of the Enschede700-jubilee is ‘weaving together’. A beautiful reference to the rich textile history of Enschede. Enschede700 is an anniversary year by and for the people of Enschede and the many visitors. A year in which we meet and celebrate together what makes us, people of Enschede, so unique. This celebration is about us: about the stories of our residents, our neighbourhoods, our shared pride in everything that we have achieved.

When Enschede received city rights in 1325, it was the start of a new era. The residents were given a voice, the city could organize its own jurisdiction and the tradesmen found their place within its walls. Who could have predicted then that 700 years later we would grow into an innovative and vibrant city with a rich past and a promising future?

I am incredibly proud of what we have built together as a city. Proud of the resilience after dramatic events like the fireworks disaster. Proud of our culture with icons like Willem Wilmink and Harry Bannink. And proud of how we continue to innovate. Enschede has produced a lot of special and unique companies that have evolved from innovation and creativity. That too gives one a great and proud feeling.

The Enschede700-jubilee is also an invitation to you to join in. In the many beautiful and creative events large and small that are created with great pleasure and commitment. We hang up the garlands to give you a warm and festive welcome to our city. We show Enschede at its best. The lovely shopping city with its many cozy terraces and great restaurants and bistros.

In this magazine you will read an extensive overview of the festivities. I hope that this magazine will inspire you to celebrate the Enschede-700 jubilee with us. Enjoy the hospitality of Enschede.

HIGHLIGHTS

48 HOURS IN ENSCHEDE

This is where your weekend in Enschede starts. The things you don’t want to miss? These highlights will certainly fill your 48 hours in Enschede.

EXPERIENCE OUR SHOPPING STREETS AND THE OUDE MARKT

Every shopaholic will find what he is looking for in the dozens of shops in the centre of Enschede. Well-known brands like Zara, Mango and Primark can be found at the H.J. van Heekplein. Then be inspired in the smaller streets of our town. The Haverstraatpassage, De Heurne,

Walstraat and Zuiderhagen are full of unique boutiques. Here you can create your own style. That is shopping ‘the Enschede way’.

Nestled among these small streets is the Oude Markt. That is where connoisseurs meet the trendsetters. The square is surrounded by bars and restaurants, all with a view of the Grote Kerk and its belltower. You are welcome every hour of the day. Relax on the terrace, order a sandwich and enjoy Twente’s hospitality. The heart of Enschede beats at the Oude Markt.

OUDE MARKT

TWENTSCHE FOODHAL AND PERFORMANCE FACTORY: ALWAYS A SURPRISE

The eight varying cuisines at the Twentsche Foodhal serve worldly dishes. They make sure your lunch, drink or dinner is a real food experience. The cuisines and the menus change regularly. That is why the Twentsche Foodhal is always full of surprises.

The Performance Factory is startling as well. There is always something new here. This talent factory on the east side of the city centre is bustling and bubbling. Creative entrepreneurs, health and welfare, sports and culture, all under one roof. Fancy something new and active? How about skating at Skatepark De Fabriek or climbing at Cube Bouldergym.

BE INSPIRED AT ROOMBEEK

Roombeek inspires everyone. This district north of the city centre had a complete make-over after the fireworks disaster of 13 May 2000. Architect Pi de Bruijn created a place for living, working, shopping and art. This is the place where Rijksmuseum Twenthe, De Museumfabriek, Tetem Kunstruimte and AKI/ArtEZ Academie voor Kunst & Design joint forces. The Rijksmuseum Twenthe offers changing exhibitions. Each exhibition tells a story of contemporary or past culture with a major role for artifacts and paintings.

Do you want to connect architecture and culture? Then try the Roombeek route. In half an hour you will walk from Rijksmuseum Twenthe at the Lasondersingel 41 along 14 locations in the area.

A bit further down the road is De Museumfabriek. Here you can discover ‘the coherence of things’. Just around the corner art hall Tetem connects modern art with technology in some controversial expositions. At Roombeek the old and the new go hand in hand. You can feel it in your bones.

EYE-CATCHER IN THE PRINSESTRAAT

The most beautiful synagogue of Western-Europe can be found in Enschede. It is situated in the Prinsestraat, between the city centre and the Volkspark. The place of worship is still in use and is one of our highlights. With its three copper domes a real eye-catcher since 1928. The synagogue likes to welcome you. Admire the style mix of art deco, Amsterdamse School and oriental style. A guide will show you all the special details during a tour. Glass-stained windows and Thora-scroll, symbolism and mosaics. In the meantime you will learn that the architect Karel de Bazel, from Amsterdam, designed the synagogue for textile manufacturer from Enschede M.I. Menko. Special: the guide will adjust his tour for children.

NATURE AREA WITH MILITARY PRECISION

Former airport and nature area Vliegveld Twenthe is located north of the city. Until 2016 it was used as a military airport. We gave the area back to nature. Now it is an excellent spot for some time off. Walk around at the former airstrip. On your way you can spot splitter boxes and bunkers in the shrubs. These splitter boxes were used to hide fighter planes in World War II. A bit further some

hangars are hidden in the woods. The Fliegerhorstroute meanders alongside. This 25-kilometer-biking route was named after the airport that the Germans constructed here in 1940. You pass art, stories from the past and nature. You spot ‘markestenen’(stones) and hear the sound of skylarks. Have a break, climb the watch tower and imagine the sound of plane engines that were once roaring here.

WEST-ENSCHEDE: A DISCOVERY IN ITSELF

Entertainment, nature, architecture and art. The western corner of the city is a discovery in itself. Here you find Twente University, the only Dutch university with its own campus. Do the Architectuur & Kunst Route and walk past Zilverling, Horst and Bastille in an hour. In the meantime you can spot works of art outdoors. After this encounter, Go Planet is waiting for you. This indoor hall next to Station Kennispark is the place to be for entertainment. Have a diving lesson, get into an e-kart, win at lasertag and watch a movie. After that, get some fresh air at the Kristalbad. This nature area is behind Twente’s ice rink, between the Twents Kanaal and the railway. This used to be a place for a crawl and a splash, now a home to waterbirds and peace seekers.

VLIEGVELD TWENTHE

In 2025, Enschede will celebrate an impressive anniversary: 700 years of city rights. All residents of Enschede will hang up the garlands together this year. The whole of 2025 will be dedicated to the 700th birthday of Enschede, a tribute to their beloved city.

ENSCHEDE700

THE CITY CELEBRATES ITS BIRTH DAY

DID YOU KNOW...

...That Enschede used to have canals?

The canals ensured that Enschede could better defend itself against external threats. In addition to city gates and palisades, Enschede also had canals. The first canal, also called the inner canal, was constructed in 1325. The inner canal ran right along the city centre. About a hundred years later, in 1450, the outer canal was constructed. The outer canal existed for 150 years.

A rampart was placed between the two canals: a mountain of sand that provided extra defense. In 1456, the bishop ordered a wooden fence to be constructed around the city, which was built on the rampart. The current Walstraat and Stadsgravenstraat are named after the rampart and the inner canal.

...That the oldest marathon in the Netherlands started in Enschede?

The first edition of the Enschede Marathon took place in July 1947. This makes it the oldest marathon in the Netherlands and in Western Europe. At the time, 51 runners were at the start. A big difference with the Enschede Marathon of today: 11,000 runners now register each year to take part in the event.

...That Enschede is the cradle of Dutch football?

In 1878, Bernard van Heek, descendant of the influential Enschede textile family, became

acquainted with football during a study trip to England. He brought a leather football back to Enschede. In 1885, he founded the first football club of the Netherlands in Enschede. Although there is debate about where exactly the first football rolled in the Netherlands, Bernard van Heek's initiative is seen as one of the most important moments in the history of the sport in the Netherlands.

... That Enschede was one of the most important textile cities in the world?

In the 18th century, farmers saw opportunities on the scarce fertile soil of Twente. Flax was grown, with which high-quality linen fabrics could be produced. More and more spinners and weavers settled in Enschede.

The Enschede manufacturers Jan van Lochem, the Blijdenstein brothers and Abraham Strick developed a new type of fabric: bombazine. This is linen with a cotton weft. In 1728, they received a patent for its production. A factory was then established in Enschede and the demand was incredibly high. Unfortunately, the city fire of 1862 almost wiped out the entire city center within the canals. However, the destruction of the city gave Enschede the opportunity to spread its wings. The reconstruction ensured more and larger factories. The textile industry developed rapidly and Enschede experienced unprecedented growth due to the fire.

ENSCHEDE700 EVENTS CITY RIGHTS

On 15 December 1325, the Utrecht bishop Johan van Diest granted city rights to Enschede. This marked an important moment in the history of the city, because it officially transformed its status as a settlement into a city with its own legal, economic and administrative powers. Enschede was given the freedom to organize markets, collect tolls, exercise its own jurisdiction and construct defenses.

ON TOP OF THE FUTURE

Enter the playground of the future. Innovation and creativity are a way of life in Enschede. Right here you play with future technologies, you think about the influence of digital media and you meet the creative minds of tomorrow. You will certainly be inspired.

It is not strange that Enschede is leading the way. The mix of technique, art, industry and creativity is a feature of our city and it is obvious that pioneers meet here. Educational institutes like Twente University, Saxion and ArtEZ/AKI Academy of Art & Design bring young manufacturers and new talents together. They establish for example start-ups, just like Thuisbezorgd and Booking.com once started in Enschede.

Besides these entrepreneurs, artists are experimenting with digital media, games and artificial intelligence in our city. Their ideas blossom at creative places. Here you are right on top of the future.

ARTEZ/AKI

Tetem is at a square opposite ArtEZ/AKI Academy for Art & Design at Roombeek Cultuurpark. Inside it is all about the manufacturer and the manufacturing process. The focus is on young artists and manufacturers. You can watch exhibitions on a society that is preparing for the future. Digital media are very important at Tetem.

The fact that you can bring your ideas to life makes it extra special. Tetem offers the MaakMeeLab every weekend. You need to sign in on their website. From 14.00 till 17.00 children and adults will be experimenting together.

Work with 3D-printers, laser cutters and 360 degrees movies. That way the future will become visible. Bonus: you can take your homemade souvenir with you.

VILLAGES OF ENSCHEDE

Enschede has about 161.700 inhabitants (with 160 nationalities) which makes it the largest city of Overijssel. The municipality of Enschede not only consists of the city of Enschede, but also includes the villages Lonneker, Boekelo, Glanerbrug, Usselo and the hamlet Twekkelo. They all have their own unique character and are certainly worth a visit.

BUBBLY LONNEKER

BOEKELO

Lonneker is a village with about 2000 inhabitants and is situated north of Enschede. Up until 1934 it was an independant municipality. Lonneker has a cosy village square and a lot of events are organized throughout the year. One of them is the very popular village fair in May. The Lonneker mill, which dates from 1850, is very special. It is a round mill and it is the only brick layered mill in the Netherlands which has a rump that is covered in reeds. There is even a small mill shop where you can buy flour products, bread mixes, seeds, honey and eggs. Certainly worth a visit.

CHARMING BOEKELO

Boekelo is situated southwest of Enschede and has about 2.500 inhabitants. The village is known for the salt mining that used to be done there. Today, many salt houses and a replica of the salt tower can still be found. There are also many

LONNEKER

beautiful estates in Boekelo. In October the annual De Military Boekelo-Enschede takes place, one of the biggest equestrian events in the Netherlands. At Museum Buurtspoorweg you get to know a unique collection of railway material, children discover all secrets of the museum during a treasure hunt and you will go on an unforgettable steam train ride.

COSY GLANERBRUG

East of Enschede, on the border with Germany, is the village Glanerbrug. The natural border is formed by the Glanerbeek (a creek) for 2 kilometres. Glanerbrug owes its name to the bridge crossing this creek. About 18.000 people are currently living in Glanerbrug. The train station Glanerbrug is only a few minutes from train station Enschede and train station Gronau. There is a shopping boulevard in the centre of the village. Here you can easily park your car and shop at well-known shops as well as local boutiques.

CHARACTERISTIC USSELO

Usselo is a small village south west of Enschede, where 280 people live. It is a so-called wreath village, the farms are situated in a big circle around the

large Usseleres. There is a rare, working standerd mill that dates from 1802: the Wissinks Möl. You can go here for the best pancake flour or wheat meal. In 1946 a major excavation was carried out at Usselo. The late-paleolithic find of flint tools used by reindeer hunters gave a new insight into the climate conditions at the end of the last ice age and is well-known worldwide.

SMALL-SCALE TWEKKELO

The hamlet Twekkelo is situated between Enschede and Hengelo. The largest part of

the hamlet belongs to the municipality of Enschede. Around 215 people live there. The centre of the hamlet of Twekkelo is formed by three ashes (Dutch: essen): the Twekkeler Es, the Lutje Es and the Groote Es. Because of the salt mining you will find a lot of drill housings in Twekkelo.

ENSCHEDE THROUGH BANNINK & WILMINK’S EYES

Enschede is all bubbling activity. The presence of a college, an academy of music, an academy of art and a university makes Enschede a multicultural student city. It has the best catering square in the eastern part of The Netherlands, hundreds of shops and numerous events. Enschede is never boring.

Enschede is also the place where composer and pianist Harry Bannink (1929-1999) and poet, writer and musician Willem Wilmink (1936-2003) were born. They were well known for television programmes like ‘De Stratemakeropzeeshow’, ‘De film van Ome Willem’ and ‘Het Klokhuis’. Entire generations grew up with the texts written by Willem Wilmink that came to life by Bannink’s music.

A TRIBUTE TO TWO ICONS OF ENSCHEDE

A route along some important and beautiful spots of Enschede was made in remembrance of these celebrities. Nice to see Enschede through their eyes, but even if you are not a fan of Bannink & Wilmink, this city walk is worthwhile.

The walk, which takes an hour, uses images and sounds to guide you along seventeen places in the city that were important in the lives of these men. A fusion of the works of these artistic sons of the city, beautifully marked by the wall signs made by graphic designer Luvane.

Theatre ‘De Kleine Willem’, the cosy theatre where Bannink founded the ‘Enschedese Jazzsociëteit’, is part of that route. You also pass Wilmink’s favourite bar ‘Café Het Bolwerk’, where you will find his image on the window. Feel free to taste the ‘Duvels’ and ‘bitterballen’

that Wilmink loved so much! Boekhandel Broekhuis has a meters high poem by Wilmink on the facade and if you stroll through the small alleys of the city , you will pass ‘Jazzpodium De Tor’, one of the oldest jazz clubs in the country. The tour passes the station and leads you back into the city centre while you walk past several cultural institutions.

In the foyer of the ‘ Muziekcentrum’ you will find ‘a monument for two friends’. This statue of Bannink and Wilmink was made by artist Don Englander, five years after Wilmink had passed away.

For those who want to visit the birth houses of these two men in the Lipperkerkstraat (Bannink) and the Javastraat (Wilmink) , you should leave the route for a short while. If you cross the Javastreet you will get to the Al Ummah school, the monumental building described in Wilmink’s ‘De oude school’ (the old school) and later performed on stage by cabaret group Don Quishocking. ‘Ach zou die school er nog wel zijn / kastanjebomen op het plein…’ (Would the old school still be there, with the chestnut trees in the square…).

BITE AND HIKE WITH KIDS

Almost everyone in Enschede knows De Broodbode. Not surprisingly, the freshly baked sandwiches made from natural ingredients are so popular that they are flying over the counter. Franchise owner Jordi Lever of the Haverstraatpassage and Zuiderhagen branches is not only an expert in tasty lunches but he is also the father of two toddlers. He loves to share his tips on great spots in and around Enschede.

When we ask him about his favourite restaurants, he doesn't have to think long: “With our kids, we like to go to restaurant Bardot or to Sam Sam. Bardot has a nice

garden and a play corner. That way the kids have distractions and we can have a relaxed meal.

We also enjoy visiting the Food Hall. Because of the different cuisines, the food is very diverse and tasty for everyone: for adults and for children.”

Together with his family, Jordi likes to explore the area: “We regularly bike to

THE NINE STREETS OF ENSCHEDE

In a beautifully restored building in the Haverstraatpassage we ask Olav Kelder, owner of fashion store New Zealand Auckland Store, about the best spots in Enschede.

“I love extensive dining”, says the entrepreneur who you will find in the city centre every day. He knows Enschede inside out and is enthusiastic to share the best tips.

His favourite place to eat?

"Restaurant Joann is a fantastic place to visit for an evening full of indulgence. For lunch, the Broodbode is very nice. A great place for a tasty sandwich."

The small (shopping) streets of Enschede are most characteristic according to Olav:

"Look beyond the square and the larger shops that you find all over the country. I love the smaller streets of Enschede’s city centre. The Walstraat with really nice restaurants and bars. Or the Haverstraatpassage with special shops- those are like the nine streets of Enschede."

For those who want to be outside the city, Olav recommends natural areas like Hof Espelo and the Aamsveen: "Especially people coming from the western part of the Netherlands don’t know these areas. Such beautiful places for hiking!”

His favourite event? "Kunst in het Volkspark (Art at the Volkspark). A cosy art event that takes place every year on the second Sunday of June. I bought a lot of beautiful things there.”

Wooldrikspark and the petting zoo. The direction of Lonneker is also always a must. Café Sprakel with its ice-cream parlour is a nice place for a stopover.”

For people that are looking for more family activities, Jordi has another tip: “For inspiration, we keep an eye on the website VETTT. There you can find fun outings, also in Enschede and the surrounding areas.”

TIPS BY TORI

‘I love being outside all day long,’ says Tori Doorn, owner of catering establishments Van Doorn en Doorn and tearoom Sprakel in het Bos. That is why she moved to the rural village of Lonneker not long ago and she already knows she never wants to leave.

Her favourite spot in Lonneker?

"The Spar! A small and cosy supermarket staffed by people with special needs and a really nice place to be. No self-scan cash desks, but enthusiastic employees." This personal contact is what she values and it is exactly what she wants to achieve in her own businesses: to create peaceful places where guests feel at home.

A CITY OUTDOOR LIFE

Sybrine Richter is the owner of flower shop Country Life, which is situated in one of the oldest textile factories still left in Enschede. She loves to talk about her favourite hotspots of Enschede.

"Our own building is always a surprise to people who walk in for the first time," she says proudly. "Because on the outside you cannot see the length of the building and the amount of historical elements that are kept. Like the special roof construction that lets in lots of sunshine."

About some of the other places in the city she says: "I love the Oude Markt with all the bars and restaurants. Also the Haverstraatpassage around the square, a very nice shopping street with some of the smaller entrepreneurs. Roombeek has also become a nice place to stay, with its Gastrobar Bij Rozendaal. That really is an attractive part of Enschede."

She likes to go for walks with her husband and their dog at the Ledeboerpark; "one of the most beautiful parks in the Netherlands”, according to her. The young entrepreneur also visits Hof Espelo regularly, although she still misses a nice catering establishment there.

For those who stay at the city centre, Tori recommends the new bakery hotspot Bitterzoet for great cakes or Stoet for delicious bread. However, her most important message to visitors: "Look beyond the city centre. The rural area of Enschede has lots of beautiful things to discover!’

To Sybrine the combination of city and nature is the main advantage of Enschede:

at the Van Heekplein: "I always enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city."

SWAP THE BUSTLE OF THE CITY FOR THE CALMNESS OF NATURE

In Enschede, nature is always just around the corner. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city you will find our 10 city parks. Green oases for a moment of rest. Leave the centre of the city behind and you will find beautiful estates and rural areas. Enjoy an active day in the forests of Twente, soak up the silence and clear your head. There is good news for scouts: more and more estates around Enschede will be open for public. So, join us in nature. Let’s start by going northeast. Destination: nature area Hooge Boekel.

WALKING AMONG HISTORY IN HOOGE BOEKEL

Nature area Hooge Boekel activates your senses. It was named after a historic estate between Enschede and Losser. Unpaved paths, dense forests, fields

and the designed park woodlands of the estate. There is lots to discover. Biking and hiking routes meander through the woody area. Put on your hiking boots, breathe in and let go of your thoughts. On your way, the sunlight sparkles

through the leaves and you will only hear the sound of your footsteps.

The estate Hooge Boekel is the heart of the nature reserve. The manor was built by Herman van Heek, the garden was designed by garden architect Wattez from Delden. Following the public paths you walk through the park woodlands. Every now and then you get a glimpse of the majestic manor between the trees. There are 12 artworks along the path. They go with a tour that was designed by the artist Eric Langendoen. This tour shows the history of the estate Het Hooge Boekel.

Coming by car? There is a parking lot on the estate on Hoge Boekelerweg diagonally opposite Hoveniersbedrijf Hoek.

EXPERIENCE OUTDOOR ADVENTURES AT HET RUTBEEK

Het Rutbeek inspires you to be active. This recreational area can be found south of Enschede. Central point of Het Rutbeek is the pool. There are sandy beaches and lawns situated around the water. The wood is a little bit further, like a collar surrounding the water. At Het Rutbeek you will experience a day full of

outdoor adventures. Dive into the water, go surfing, paddle around in a canoe and take water-ski lessons. You can follow the paved paths around the water. A hike takes you through forests, along fields, the scenic landscape of Twente and along estates. A bit further down the road you find yourself among the metres-high reeds along the watersides. Het Rutbeek surprises you. Multiple (paid) parking lots are available at Rutbeek.

More green tips for a relaxing moment or an active day in Enschede and inspiration for discovery trips in nature:

CITY PARKS

Need to rest? Come to Het Volkspark, the oldest city park in The Netherlands, and find a spot on the green terrace of restaurant Loetje with a view on the city ponds.

Explore the G.J. van Heekpark, between the Boddenkampsingel and the Hengelosestraat. Finish your hike at Wattez with a cup of coffee and a piece of homemade apple pie.

The Ledeboerpark is a park and an estate all in one. Visit the apiary, the tearoom at Boerderij Oldenhof (farm) and admire the largest sequoia of The Netherlands.

Follow the intricate paths of the Wooldrikspark and stop for a treat at teagarden Ik & Mijn Moeder (Me and my mum).

ESTATES

Walk through the forest at Landgoed Hof Espelo, while the kids are climbing the trees and looking for gnomes. Also visit Koetshuis Hof Espelo to learn more about the things you saw on your hike.

Landgoed 't Stroink offers a lot of variation. You can roam along lanes surrounded by trees, exciting forest paths and hidden ponds.

Roam free through forests and open fields at Landgoed Smalenbroek. Spot special trees and shrubs that you won’t normally find in The Netherlands.

HET RUTBEEK

TEXTILE ROUTE ENSCHEDE-GRONAU

OLD TRACKS, NEW ENERGY

Go on a journey through pop music in an old turbine hall. Be creative with a laser cutter or a 3D-printer in a place where once the looms were rattling. Hop on your bike and discover how Enschede and Gronau add a new twist to their shared textile history.

Things can change: Van Heek and Guevara together on a façade: it is possible. This is the case at Villa Van Heek, now a tapas restaurant. The plaque showing the strict looking textile manufacturer adorns the sign of the revolutionary Che Guevara. Nowadays you can eat chorizo croquettes and fried pointed peppers there. It is a small example of how Enschede shook off its textile past, but has never forgotten about it. The influence of the textile industry on the city and its inhabitants

was enormous. That influence crosses the border: manufacturers from Enschede were involved in the development of the textile industry in the city of Gronau.

EXPLOSION OF ACTIVITY

The appropriate starting point of the bike tour is Enschede train station. The construction of the railway to Münster and Dortmund via Gronau enhanced an explosion of activity from 1875 onwards. The two textile factories right next to the train station of Enschede are no longer there. They were dismantled in the seventies, in the spirit of that time.

The more important is the industrial heritage that actually was preserved in the Roombeek district. A spectacular mix of old and new can be found at the site where the fireworks disaster took place in 2000. Many factories are eye catchers here. Used as a museum, an art

academy, an exposition hall, a school or an apartment complex they stand out among contemporary architecture

A bit further down the road, Rijksmuseum

Twenthe is luring you in. The museum offers an overview of art from the Middle Ages until today. At the same time it is a living monument of the textile past, because the founder of the museum was manufacturer and art collector Jan Bernard Van Heek.

A BATHHOUSE WITH GRANDEUR

The route leads back to the city centre, through the area where the Van Heek factory complex stretched out along the rail tracks. Towards the Van Heekplein, named after van Heek, who had an indoor swimming pool / bathhouse built here for the people of Enschede. It was used as a washing area for the employees.

The grand building, which had an interior with an arched dome and cast iron pillars, was tore down by the sledgehammer in 1972.

ARISEN FROM THE ASHES

In his poem Textielstad (1976), Willem Wilmink captured the period of decay and deterioration after the collapse of the textile industry in an impressive way. In 1987 Wilmink wrote a version that adjusted this pessimistic image. ‘What once was a sad spectacle, has arisen from the ashes like a phoenix’. In the meantime, Enschede had changed unrecognizably. The melancholic original version can be found on the façade of Broekhuis Bookstore at De Graaff the intersection, instead of the roaring ode.

On this spot you can also wonder what happened to all those manufacturers; the Van Heeks, Ter Kuiles, Blijdensteins. The famous hotel De Graaff could no longer exist when these families closed their factories and it vanished over time. The beautiful villa Baurichter, which is in the same square and was once the home of a member of the Van Heek family, is now a Mexican restaurant. However, only one street further down you will find their presence. A modest sign with the family name on it: ‘Van Heek Holding en Beheer’, can be found among the names of other office firms.

Above the door, the Blijdenstein family weapon refers to banker B.W. Blijdenstein, founder of the Twentsche Bank, located here and an intersection in the trade of textile entrepreneurs.

ROCK'N'POP MUSEUM

A stone’s throw from this monumental building you will find a statue of Alfons Ariëns. The statue honours the ‘red’ priest as foreman and driver of the catholic labour movement. With the former hospital Stadsmaten in the background, now Stadscampus Connect-U, the place where companies will find their talents and young professionals can develop themselves.

MIGHTY SIZE

The developments take a little longer in Gronau, or so it seems. In the area around the train station you will see several factory buildings waiting for a new destination. This inevitably gives you the image of faded glory as described by Willem Wilmink in his poem.

Standing on the modern Bogenbrücke you can see the textile factories as far as the eye reaches. From the former office of the firm Mathieu van Delden – now a proud innovation centre- till De Witte Dame (The White Lady) the nickname of the former spinning mill owned by Gerrit van Delden.. The lady still looks majestic with her beautiful water tower. However, decay is inevitable. In the meantime private owners keep searching for ways to realise a makeover that the city council will approve.

GREEN PYRAMID

A makeover was realised in other places. The vast factory area of Mathieu

van Delden has been a park since the Landesgartenschau Gronau/Losser in 2003. A green pyramid that rises above the flowerbeds, ponds and playgrounds. It was built using debris of the dismantled factory. The staircase of the spinning building was saved from demolition and now has a climbing wall.

ROCK’N’POPMUSEUM

The most striking example of a makeover is the transformation of the former turbine building into the rock’n’popmuseum.

A logical destination knowing that the colourful rock musician Udo Lindenberg was born here. The bronze statue of Mathieu van Delden watches you from his pedestal in the park. He has no choice, just like Gerrit Jan van Heek in Enschede. Their days are over, but their names live on.

TIP

The Grensoverschrijdende Textielfietsroute Enschede-Gronau (30 kilometers) is put together by Enschede Promotie and Stadtmarketing Gronau. For those who cannot or do not want to bike: you can also do the route on foot in both cities and take the train to cover the part between Enschede and Gronau.

GRONAU
GRONAU

The Street Art Route shows you much more of Enschede than just colorful outdoor art. You will also discover stories from then and now and experience the creative energy that is so characteristic of the city.

City guide Sharonie from the City Guides Guild took us along.

DISCOVER STORIES FROM THEN AND NOW WITH THE STREET ART ROUTE

THE ENERGY SPLASHES OFF

Will it be a döner sandwich or lachmacun deluxe? The menu in a corner of the mural does not even detract from it. For this is also completely Enschede: a city where 160 nationalities feel at home, where activity in all forms and shapes is given its space and where you can satisfy your hunger at any time. With food, with art, or with both. To everyone’s taste.

The bright colours on the façade in the Hofstraat fit in nicely with this. They are a trademark of Studio ZEPA, an originally South African artist duo that is now based in the Netherlands. With their use of colour, which is distinct as well as harmonious, they underline both the diversity in communities and the fact that all people are equal. You will come across the female figure with glasses more often in their work. She deliberately looks ahead, into the future.

ROSE WINDOWS AND SPOOLS OF YARN

At the same time, the work the artists left behind in Enschede in 2023 is typical of the city. On the side wall of dönerrestaurant Max you see the city emblem, the towers of both the Grote Kerk and the Lasonderkerk and the water tower with its rose windows from the former spinning mill of Jannink’s textile factory. The abstract colour patterns are inspired by fabrics that once rolled off the machines in Enschede. Woven from the yarn that is also shown on the wall.

That is how this street art also marks one of the four most important moments in the history of Enschede, as city guide Sharonie explains. The rise and fall of the textile industry have defined and touched Enschede, but it has not broken the city at all, as Sharonie will often explain later in the route. In fact, the same applies to the three other key moments she mentions: the great city fire of 1862, the Second World War with devastating bombings and the fireworks disaster in the Roombeek district on 13 May 2000.

LOOKING OUT OVER THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE CITY

On the other side of the Langestraat once gathered the members of the posh Heerensociëteit, including of course the textile manufacturers. The society donated a theatre to the city on this site, which later moved and made way for shops and restaurants. Fortunately the

elegant small hall was preserved. Just like the 25 sculptures by artist Jawik Krudde on and around the building. A harlequin, a Pierrot, dancers and other theatrical figures: for decades they have been looking out over the hustle and bustle of the city. At De Kleine Willem the audience can still enjoy performing art, programmed by the Wilmink Theatre, but also a surprising courtyard garden with a terrace, a tip from our guide Sharonie.

Things get a little rougher a little further on in the Hofstraat, where the portraits of three musical icons are immortalized on the wall of café Rocks. Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Angus Young betray what you can expect in terms of a lived-in sound inside. They also refer to the reputation that Enschede traditionally has as a music city. More on that later. First, Sharonie leads her party to the Walstraat, with a surprising mix of restaurants, galleries,

TATTOO AT THE WALL

And street art of course. Like on the side wall of the famous jazz stage De Tor, with over 50 years on the counter one of the oldest jazz clubs in the Netherlands. On the outside, De Tor has been recognizable by the 'Tor Tattoo', as artist Dirk Oeghoede called his mural, since 2005. In striking colours he depicted the freedom in jazz music, while the beetle itself also appears.

Another institution in the Walstraat: gallery Beeld en Aambeeld. As soon as employee Jaap Doosje hears about the theme of the city walk , he points to the building across the street. Under the arches above the windows a braid of coloured bricks can be discovered. Historical street art, you could say. It shows the warp and weft in weaving. Once the monumental building was inhabited by the textile family Blijdenstein, hence the name. Now it is the place where Mrs. Brown bakes and sells 'casual patisserie'.

Without fuss, but anything but the ordinary: it is exactly the atmosphere that Enschede cherishes. Where gay café Stonewall has been 'the place to be proud' for 35 years, run by volunteers from the LGBTI+ community. This pride is

TAKE A PHOTO WITH ROBOTS AND TRABANT

On it goes, to the equally historic Zuiderhagen. When that street needed a boost, fellow citizens and authorities joined forces to realize an open-air gallery. Since 2016 various art works have been on display regularly, like cityscapes by the well-known Twente painter Klaas Bernink at the time of writing.

In the Noorderhagen guide Sharonie stops at the building of artists' initiative PlanetArt, also the founder of the renowned Gogbot festival. An annual festival of art, technology and music. This combination is also shown in the mural by Marco de Vries dating from 2019. The image of two robots kissing while they are still being worked on, is a still from a video clip by singer Björk. A popular place for a photo, Sharonie knows, although the Trabant with a mohawk on the back roof also plays an important role.

A THRIVING MUSIC CULTURE

A stone's throw away you find the Muziekcentrum, which is one of the top (classical) concert venues in the Netherlands. How the city's music culture is flourishing has been symbolized by the mural 'Come to Bloom' since 2024.

A mural by Spanish street art artist Jabier Landa. Besides flowers, you can also see the muses of Pan, the God of music who himself - as a work of art by the Space Cowboys from Deventer - has found a place on the roof of the ArtEZ conservatory which is just around the corner. On the walk there, cartoonish panels by graphic designer LUVANE draw attention to writer Willem Wilmink and composer Harry Bannink, icons of Dutch song culture and sons of Enschede.

The fact that the fame of Enschede as a music city reaches far is also shown by the work of artist Sonna Krom on the Stadsgravenstraat. In 'No Black, No White, Just the Blues' she puts the legendary Enschede Nobo's Blues Band in the spotlight, together with Robert 'Bilbo' Walker. This American blues legend came to Enschede in 2015 for the Memphis Heart 'n Soul Festival, which celebrated the historic bond between Enschede as a textile city and Memphis as a cotton supplier.

But what is that bag of fries doing there on the side? About the same as the menu from the beginning of the route, as it turns out. It is a wink to the shop around the corner, where party animals can go until late at night for a bite from De Muur.

With the Street Art Route you walk just under three kilometers along 23 works of art, largely through the city centre of Enschede. Besides murals, you will also discover other forms of outdoor art, from sculpture groups to poems. There are also plans for new works of art in 2025. The route description is available online and as a brochure. For more information, also about group walks with a city guide: uitinenschede.nl/ streetart
