Peace Pavilion

Kaira Looro | Architecture for Peace Concept Focus

The project comes from the idea of creating a sensory journey and not just a simple pavilion. We started from the shape of the circle as a symbol of union and peace. The three required functions have been identified with three circles of different sizes. The dimensions change according to the type of activity. The first activity you encounter when entering is the exhibition area which, having to have a more public and functional character, was designed as a free area that can be organized at will. The study/ storage area separated by a movable bamboo wall also overlooks this space. The exhibition space leads to the fulcrum of the project, the area for raising awareness. This area contains an amphitheater system capable of also collecting rainwater for reuse. The amphitheater is used to organize events that can transmit the cruelties committed in the region and not only so as to keep the memory alive and sensitize the new generations. From here you enter the last space, a very cozy area composed of a circular room with holes on the wall from which a soft and never direct light filters. Here you can gather and meditate with the right silence.

The building was designed to be built only with materials present in the place and with techniques typical of the African context and in particular of this area. The walls are in plastered clay masonry. The openings are given by the different arrangement of the bricks without statically influencing the wall itself. The cover is composed of two parts: the first is the structure that supports the real roof and is designed as a bamboo weave to form a solid but light reticular structure.
