Supporting Operation Christmas Child

Lions Clubs Post Veterans Day Banquet

The Wakefield and Quarryville Lions clubs will host a Veterans Day banquet on Friday, Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. The banquet is open to all veterans and their guests and will include a free meal and a guest speaker. To register, contact Gerald Wagner at 717-786-2195 or Joe McMullen at 717-786-8060.

MiddleOctorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will take collections for the yearly Operation Christmas Child program from Monday, Nov. 14, to Monday, Nov. 21. The program collects shoeboxes filled with small gifts, which are then distributed to children around the globe.

Middle Octorara Presbyterian became involved with Operation Christmas Child in the mid-1990s when its youth group started collecting items to donate, and the church officially became a drop-off location in 2009. On Sunday, Nov. 13, the church will host a packing party from 9 to 10 a.m., and members of the public are invited to join church church members in bringing and packing items for the collection. Last year, the church contributed 85 boxes and received over 2,000 donations from other local churches, organizations and individuals. “I love seeing people bringing their boxes in. Each year, we get a couple young kids that proudly carry their one or two boxes, which are just as important as the 200 that another church

might donate,” said Dan Henry, coordinator of the drive. “It’s so fun to chat with them and ask what they put in their boxes.”

On the last day of collection, church members will load the donated boxes into a truck, so they can be sent to the processing center in Baltimore. On Monday, Dec. 5, volunteers will drive to the processing center to assist with donations that are then distributed around the world.

The primary items needed for the supply drive are school supplies, personal hygiene items and small toys. Samaritan’s Purse requests that those donating do not include toothpaste, used items, war-related items such as toy weapons or military figurines, foods, liquids, medication or fragile items. Participants may donate $10 per shoebox gift to receive tracking information for their package and learn its destination on the Samaritan’s Purse website.

Operation Christmas Child was started in 1993 by the organization Samaritan’s Purse, when its president, Franklin Graham, received a call from a man in England requesting shoeboxes full of gifts for children in Bosnia. Samaritan’s Purse

partnered with a church in Charlotte, N.C., to collect thousands of boxes of gifts and letters for the recipients. Since its inception, Operation Christmas Child has facilitated the collection and delivery of over 198 million shoebox gifts in 170

countries. Anyone may prepare a box and drop it off at one of the over 5,000 locations in all 50 states. For more information and to view the list of suggested items, visit www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we -do/operation-christmas-child.

After a short hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the banquet returned last year. “We had a lower turnout last year, which we attribute to the pandemic,” said Wagner. “I think people are anxious to get back to normal.” After the meal, retired naval academy officer Cmdr. Cindy Abbadini will speak at the banquet. Each banquet traditionally features a guest speaker; in the past, it has hosted Dick Hoxworth, a longtime newscaster for WGAL.

The veterans’ banquet is a tradition started by the Quarryville Lions Club to show the community’s appreciation for its veterans and has grown from 30 attendees in its first year to nearly 200 in recent years. As the banquet grew, the Quarryville Lions Club enlisted the help of the Wakefield Lions Club to accommodate the event’s size.

The Wakefield Lions Club stemmed from the Quarryville branch several years ago and split off to house the many new members of the organization more adequately. At the time, the mother organization in Chicago encouraged groups to divide to keep Lions Clubs localized.

The Quarryville Lions Club sponsored the new Wakefield

branch, and the two alternated hosting their own meetings twice a month.

“We try to support the community in any way we can,” said Wagner. The Quarryville Lions Club offers sponsorships and fundraising for many local organizations and events, including the Miss Solanco pageant and library book sales. Its largest fundraiser of the year is at the Solanco Fair, where the club sells french fries to raise funds for both itself and the Wakefield club. Four years ago, the club began hosting a pork and sauerkraut dinner on New Year’s Day in conjunction with the youth group of Memorial United Methodist Church. In December, the club will sponsor a Christmas event for Quarryville Borough.

Metropolitan Opera star Eric Owens will perform as part of “Curtis on Tour” on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.

“Curtis on Tour” is the Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Owens and singers from the Curtis Opera Theatre will perform Johannes Brahms’

“Neue Liebeslieder,” Op. 65, as well as selections from Franz Schubert, Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Georges Bizet.

Owens is a bass-baritone, a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music who performs in orchestral, recital, and operatic pieces. “Curtis on Tour” will also feature Sarah Fleiss, soprano; Lucy Baker, mezzosoprano; Joseph Tancredi, tenor; Milos Repicky, piano; and Ting Ting Wong, piano.

Tickets are available at www.lancastertrust.com.

Little Britain Presbyterian Church, 255 Little Britain Church Road, Peach Bottom, will host a free community meal on Friday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dinner will feature meatloaf.

All are welcome to attend. For more information, call 717-548-2266.

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host an art and craft market on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will feature over 25 vendors, a bake sale, a food café and a silent auction, and it will benefit the church’s missions committee.

Among the many vendors will be Eleanor Delk, who will sell custom-made bowl covers, table runners and hot chocolate bombs; photographer Sharon Verkulien with several images from her excursion to the African wilderness; and fine artist Carol Dale, who will sell original paintings and prints. New vendors have been added to the lineup for

this year’s art and craft market, and their items will include jewelry, quilts, birdhouses, hand-painted crafts and holiday wreaths. “I love seeing all of the different items the vendors make and their creativity,” said Mary Martz, coordinator of the art and craft market. “(The art and craft market) gets us all in the holiday spirit, as a lot of holiday items are available.”

Additionally, local author JP Robinson will be present to sell and autograph his books. Robinson is the president of the Lancaster Christian Writers Association and writes books in the historical and political suspense genre. The art and craft market will also feature performances by three members of the church who provide the music for Sunday services - Nancy Snyder, Keith Roberts and Genevieve Karki.

A bake sale will be held during the event, and all items will be either donated or made by members of LUMC. A food café will be available in the church’s all-purpose room, where church members will prepare and sell a variety of food and snacks. Throughout the market, a silent auction will be held, consisting of items donated by the vendors and local businesses and gift baskets prepared by the church.

The art and craft market was started by LUMC’s missions committee seven years ago, and all proceeds traditionally benefit a cause selected by the committee; in the past, the group has supported specific needs of missionaries in the community and raised funds for Villa Fontane Church in Puerto Rico, which was heavily affected by Hurricane Maria. This year, all proceeds raised from the bake sale, food purchases and the silent auction will benefit Ukrainian refugees.

Wagner Grabs PIAA Fourth Place Medal

Logan Wagner saved his best for last. The Solanco senior put together a 145 two-day total at the PIAA golf championships at Penn State Oct. 17-18 and grabbed a fourth-place state medal in the process.

“We believe he’s probably Solanco’s highest state finisher,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “He is a two-time state qualifier and qualified for districts every year which is a first for Solanco in at least 17 years.”

Wagner carded a one-over 70 on Monday and was tied for second place with Central Catholic’s Rocco Salvitti. “He putted lights out that round,” said L-S head coach Mike Chiodo, who followed Wagner’s group that opening day.

“Logan finished with a 75 on Tuesday but I thought he played awesome,” praised Minnich. “It was cold and windy and with all the pressure that goes with it, he did well. He hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation but had four threeputts. Sometimes that happens. He birdied the last hole to finish alone in fourth place. I’m very proud of him and his accomplishments.”

Wagner also earned his fourth section scoring title

which is believed to be a first in L-L League history.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country teams traveled to Ephrata Middle School Tuesday, Oct. 18 to compete in the L-L League Championships where they brought home a pair of medals.

Athony Solis-Morales and Emma Baxter both earned top 25 medals for their efforts. Solis-Morales was 15th overall and led the Mules to an 11th place team finish while Baxter, also a senior, finished in 14th place. The girls were 10th overall.

“The top 7 AAA teams advance to districts,” said head coach Andrew Musselman. “We were 9th. The guys did everything they needed to do to get close. They were well prepared to run.

“The girls were also close, finishing as the 8th AAA team. The top six move on,” he added. “They were expected to be closer to 14th or 15th but stepped up. Each and every one of them laid it out there.”

Solis-Morales, with a 17:13, posted the sixth fastest Solanco time since 2008. Also placing for the Mules was Wyatt Tomison (46th), James Hartigan (59th), Isaac Esh (67th), Ian Althoff (139), Thomas Houghton (143), Curtis Hills (144) and Rusty Armstrong (165).

“Anthony finished 41st last year,” noted Musselman. “He stayed in the front pack the whole race. And Emma is just fearless. She ran a gutsy race.”

Place winners for the girls included Daria Neaves (36), Christine Wagner (59th), Olivia Singleton (69th), Anna Linde (105), Lexi Groff (111) and Gracie Hartigan (126).

FOOTBALL

And the beat goes on. Solanco’s football team ran its winning streak to eight straight with a 49-21 Section Three win at Daniel Boone Friday, Oct. 14.

Josiah Forren rushed for 139 yards on 19 carries, scored once and threw for another TD. Cole Harris was right behind with 134 yards on 20 carries and also scored to lead a 382-yard rushing charge.

“Noah Baber also had a

great game,” said head coach Tony Cox. “He caught a touchdown pass, had two interceptions and finished with seven PAT’s, that’s something we’ve been struggling with.

“We knew their defense would be good,” he added. “They’ve been in some close games. It’s hard to travel an hour and a half. We had the energy, but we faced some adversity again, losing five of six fumbles. We were just not as focused as we needed to be. But the kids did what they needed to do. They responded and made up for it in other areas.”

Like blocking a punt (Landon Steele) and making a halfback pass (Forren) and returning an interception for a score (Carter Smith).

Steele not only blocked the punt but grabbed the ball and scored, giving Solanco its first TD of the night.

The visitors scored again on a Harris two-yard run and another PAT by Baber for a 14-0 lead.

DB, celebrating their homecoming, cut the lead to 14-7 but couldn’t keep the momentum on their side. Solanco countered early in the second quarter when Forren (7 tackles) took a pitch from Brody Mellinger (80 rushing yards) and found Baber with a 14yard TD toss.

Not to be out done, DB responded with a big 75-yard TD run. Again, Solanco answered. Forren scooted 35yards to the house and Smith’s 54-yard interception return pushed the lead to 35-14at the half.

A pair of Mellinger touchdowns sandwiched Boone’s final tally of the night.

“Donovan Peters stepped in for Elijah Cunningham and made some big plays when he needed to. It was a good night to get the majority of the roster action on the field,” Cox said. “And this week we’ll have Logan Pitman back, which helps. We still have things to work on.”

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team traveled to Manheim Central Thursday, Oct. 13. The Barons swept the series with a second 3-1 win over Solanco. After dropping the first set 25-5, Solanco stormed back

for a 25-20 win but couldn’t keep the momentum going, bowing out 25-8, 25-15.

“We made a lineup switch in that second set and it sparked us,” said head coach Dillon Costrello. “Martha Weaver (4 aces, 1 block) switched to the middle position and did a great job. Emily Powl (7 kills) was effective offensively and defensively,” he continued. “And Marissa Cannizzaro (21 digs) played a heck of a match. She was all over the place. Once again, though, we struggle with our serve receive. That was our downfall.”

Oct. 17, on a night they celebrated their seniors, Solanco hosted Lampeter-Strasburg in a spirited season finale. The Pioneers won 25-12, 25-11, 25-23.

Struggling to receive serve led to the opening two losses but a lineup change in the third set proved to be almost a success. Solanco held a lead all the way to a 14-14 tie and up 18-16 they held the advantage until an unforced error tied the game at 22-22. A serving error pushed Lampeter’s lead to 24-23 before a serve receive error left the hosts with a 2-12 overall record.

“When our serve receive is consistent, and we match other teams serving, and our offense is smart, we play really well,” said Costrello.

“I thought we played well defensively the whole match,” he added. “The offense stepped up in the third set.”

Solanco recognized senior team captains Marissa Cannizzaro, Sophia Stoltzfus and Alaina Herr along with seniors Chasity Rineer, Sophia Reedy and Martha Weaver prior to the game.

“Marissa is a selfless leader that led through her actions,” said Costrello. “Sophia (Stoltzfus) was also selfless and positive. They were always pushing and cheering their teammates. Alaina was a light on our team,” he continued. “She always wants what was best for the team. Chasity and Sophia (Reedy) always pushed themselves and Martha led through her actions. She has a funny personality that helped her teammates relax.

“This group is a tough loss

for the program. They were good role models and good people.”

FIELD HOCKEY

Solanco’s field hockey team capped its season on a positive note, blanking Lebanon Oct. 18 on the strength of Sadie Cook’s third period goal.

Becca Troutman was credited with the assist. Mya Gonzalez recorded 10 saves.

“The team played very well, showing excellent defensive marking and block tackling,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “At the half we talked about what we needed

to execute offensively. We had many close opportunities before Sadie finally put one in. She was our top goal scorer (11 goals, 1 assist) and finished tied for eighth in Section Three goal scoring. Katie Underwood followed with 4 goals and 4 assists.”

Solanco finished its 4-13-1 season with many achievements. They scored 24 goals, five more than last year, and dished out three more assists. “We also gave up 15 fewer goals,” noted Hawkins, going from 76 last year to 61 this year.

“Preparing for Life Passages: Courageous Conversations About Life and Death” will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.

During this interactive seminar, author Kendall Keeler will share four steps that he believes can help anyone navigate any of life’s passages. Keeler’s model for planning and preparation can apply to a variety of situations, including marriage, first-time parenting, a home purchase, starting a business, beginning retirement, or receiving a terminal diagnosis.

Several community experts will speak about steps that may be taken to ensure a family is cared for if a loved one dies unexpectedly. In addition to Keeler, the speakers will be Jona Green from Edward Jones, David Spangler from LegalShield, funeral director

Michael Miller, Valerie Stocker of State Farm, and real estate agent Kelli Brandenberger.

This event will be the final “Preparing for Life Passages” seminar this year. To register, visit www.kendallkeeler.com /seminar.

For Keeler, the past few years have included a job transition, a new business startup, helping his children venture into adulthood, and assisting his parents as they age. Through these life passages, Keeler discovered a need for wisdom to avoid reactionary decisions through better personal planning, as well as a need for the input of experts. He saw a need for families to courageously prepare for the death of a loved one. Keeler’s belief in the importance of planning for the future was also fueled by his having led a variety of local nonprofits through organizational strategic planning,

including Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Solid Rock Youth Ministries, and New Hope Counseling Center.

Keeler’s first step in navigating his life’s passages was to write and publish a book, “Your Last 24,” which is intended to open the door for conversations about life and death. The book is available for purchase on Amazon. Keeler next hosted a podcast with a friend who had lung cancer; episodes can be found on most podcast platforms and at www.kendallkeeler.com /podcast.

This year, Keeler decided to take the conversation more broadly into the community and was inspired to do so by a friend and community leader, Butch Marvin, who had experienced loss. To host the semi-

nars, Keeler sought partners who were experts in the areas that he believed would most benefit families as they prepare for life’s passages, especially death. Being a longtime member of the Southern Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and having personally benefited from a variety of business leaders’ expertise, Keeler contacted Chamber members and found several who agreed to partner with him to offer the seminars. Keeler, who is a co-chair of the Solanco Pastors’ Fellowship, also asked several pastors to host the seminars at their churches. Previously this year, Keeler and his team hosted seminars at Waterway Church in Oxford, Mt. Vernon Church in Kirkwood, and Timberline Church in Strasburg.

The Trust Performing Arts Center will partner with Lancaster International Piano Festival (LIPF) during the 2022-23 season for three concerts. The LIPF concert series will continue Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at The Trust with a joint performance by Ma’s instructor, Xun Pan, and cellist HaiYe Ni. Pan, a Steinway artist, has been internationally recognized and awarded, and Ni is the Philadelphia Orchestra’s principal cellist. On Friday, May 5, 2023, the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble will close the 2022-23 series with a performance of chamber music repertoire and features Simon Maurer, violin; Dana Allaband, violin; Agnès Maurer, viola; AiLin Hsieh, cello; and Xun Pan, piano. Apprentices Earn Opportunity To Compete At National Event

Three ABC Keystone apprentices received top scores at the Keystone Chapter’s individual local craft competition on Oct. 1, which was held at the chapter’s state-of-the-art training facility in Manheim. This year, the competition also featured the chapter’s first-ever team competition designed to demonstrate safety along with craft interdependency and teamwork; simulate working conditions, where planning is critical to success; highlight individual leadership and workmanship skills as the project was assembled and completed; and encourage apprentices to work through problems as a team.

The top scorers will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the upcoming ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held from Wednesday, March 15, through Friday, March 17, 2023, in Kissimmee, Fla. At the NCC, they will compete

against craftspeople from ABC’s 68 chapters nationwide.

The local craft competition is made possible through the support of ABC Keystone Chapter members.

The competition was open to the public and was attended by family members and friends of the apprentices as well as the members of the Keystone Chapter, which provided the competitors the opportunity to compete in an environment replicating the experience of competing at ABC’s NCC. Competitors had to keep their focus on their craft and maintain strict attention to safety while working on projects that had been designed to test their practical and problem-solving skills.

The hands-on portion of the individual competition contributed to 75% of their total score and was judged by construction industry professionals. Individual competitors

Jarrell Jackson (second from right), director of the national craft championships with ABC National, congratulated individual top scorers (from far left) Matthew Flores, Evan Williams, and Richard Barnhart.

were not given details of their project build prior to the event. Ahead of the practical trade skills competition, the apprentices were required to take a written test contributing to the remaining 25% of their total score. During the written test, they proved their academic understanding and knowledge gained throughout their education program. To earn a spot at ABC Keystone’s individual local craft competition, apprentices had to rank within the top five of their trade class.

During the team competition, craft journey-level professionals worked in teams of four to complete a series of

Public

craft-specific tasks focused on electrical, plumbing, sheet metal/HVAC and carpentry in a six-hour period.

Team competitors were not required to take a written assessment. Teams were provided craft specifications and drawings no more than 24 hours before the event.

Each competitor received a Home Depot gift card for his or her participation. The firstplace winner in each trade was given a Home Depot gift card and the trip to the NCC.

The individual top scorers were Richard Barnhart of Millersville, Frey Lutz Corp., in the plumbing competition; Matthew Flores of Ronks,

Benchmark Construction Company Inc., in carpentry; and Evan Williams of Lancaster, Haller Enterprises, in electrical. Other apprentices who participated individually in the local competition include Brandon Anchant of East Petersburg, Benchmark Construction; Charles Miller of Elizabethtown, Wickersham Construction and Engineering Inc.; and Brett Travis of Annville, Benchmark Construction, in carpentry, as well as Cory Clites of York, Cyprium Solutions Inc., and Cayden Heiselman of Quarryville, D&T Electric, in electrical.

The team craft competition winner was Benchmark

Construction. Local members of the team were carpentry apprentice Jason Birdwell from Benchmark Construction, electrical apprentice Gavin Sangrey from Meadow Valley Electric Inc., and plumbing apprentice Ryan Eberly from Flow Mechanical. Wohlsen Construction Company of Lancaster also participated in the team competition.

The Keystone Chapter’s state-registered apprenticeship program offers education in 10 trades and focuses on hands-on education under the guidance of experienced instructors. To learn more, visit www.abc keystone.org/apprenticeship.

The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.

The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.

Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site.
