Are we ever too old to make new friends? Absolutely not, say the senior citizens who gather on Tuesday mornings for SALT (Seniors Are Living Treasures). The group meets for fun, friendship and fellowship from 9 a.m. to noon weekly at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “ We might have anywhere from 25 to 30 people each week,” said Tracy Miller, who coordinates the group with a team of volunteers. “We have people in their 50s and up. Our oldest member is 93.” Each meeting begins with people gathering up to 30 minutes early in the church lobby, enjoying the time to catch up with each other before heading into the chapel for coffee, food and games such as Uno or Apples to Apples. Coordinator Debbie Cohn might lead the group in chair yoga, or coordinator Renee Haney might direct a small group in devotionals or take prayer requests. Coordinator Nancy Shonk is in charge of the snack calendar, ensuring that everyone who wants to bring food has a chance to do so. The group does some activities once a month, such as playing bingo or enjoying a movie together. They also play roundrobin matches of games like cornhole or ladderball, switching tables regularly to encourage interaction among everyone. The group also brings in guest speakers to discuss a wide range of topics. Once a quarter, the See SALT pg 2

Senior Commons at Powder Mill, 1775 Powder Mill Road, York, hosts a monthly dementia education and support group featuring informative topics that promote the well-being of older adults with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, as well as their family care partners. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 3 p.m. The next meeting, on Wednesday, Jan. 21, will explore “Understanding and Coping with Agitation or Aggression.” People with Alzheimer’s or dementia may experience emotional changes such as confusion, suspicion, depression or anxiety. These feelings may cause them to become easily upset with loved ones or when outside of their comfort zone. Attendees will learn how to manage these challenging behaviors from the Senior Commons team. Workshops like this give people the confidence and tools to experience our parks and trails in a new way - and to see them as places worth preserving.” There is a per-person charge for the workshops. Children and teens under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults accompanying teens to the teen workshop do not need to register or pay for a ticket. The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) will hold a free Christmas Tree Recycling Program f o r a l l Yo r k C o u n t y residents. Residents may br ing their tree to the parking lot directly across the street from the York County Resource Recovery Center, 2651 Blackbridge Road, Yo r k . R e s i d e n t s m u s t remove any ornaments, lights, tinsel, and protective bags prior to dropping their tree off. The trees will be transported to Oldcastle APG to be recycled into mulch. The program will run through Saturday, Jan. 31. This is the 38th year
YCSWA has offered the program. Many municipalities now offer curbside Christmas tree collection for their residents, as well. The willow plants are just one part of the Horn Fa r m ’s a g r o f o r e s t r y initiatives. “A t t h e H o r n F a r m Center, agroforestr y is part of our hands-on approach to regenerative ag r iculture,” Campbell said. “ We demonstrate h o w i n te g rat i n g t re e s a n d s h r u b s i n to f a r m landscapes can support healthy ecosystems while producing useful mater i als and food for the community.” The Horn Farm Center’s agroforestry demonstrations include 16 acres of productive r ipar ian buffers, a live stake nurse r y, s e v e ra l M i yaw a k i “mini-forest” plantings and a newly developing forest garden, she said. “These productive restoration spaces serve as living classrooms where visitors and program participants can learn, interact and grow together,” Campbell added. The annual willow harvest is part of the Horn Farm’s mission to connect people with the land, promote regenerative practices and cultivate land-based skills in the community. “ Willow har vesting is also a way for participants to engage directly in ecological stewardship,” Campbell said. “During the event, community members will help maintain a healthy, productive willow patch and riparian buffer that can provide materials and ecological benefits for years to come.” She said par ticipants

Participants gain practical skills, deepen their understanding of sustainable land management and help to steward a healthy riparian buffer. Youths under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should dress for the weather, including wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes. People should bring a refillable water bottle and may use their own work gloves, although gloves will be provided for anyone who needs them. All tools and safety gear will be provided. The workday will require moderate physical labor, including kneeling , bending , carr ying , repetitive hand motions using manual pruners and loppers and spending time outside in cold temperatures. The harvest will be held rain or shine, with some exceptions. In the case of inclement weather, registered par ticipants will be contacted about changes. Agroforestry, explained H o r n Fa r m e x e c u t i v e director Alexis Campbell, is the practice of growing trees and shrubs to create a sustainable and productive land use system. “ This climate-smart farming practice improves soil health, increases biodiversity and can even provide marketable crops like fruits, nuts or materials such as willow for crafts and basketry,” she said. Coppicing is the process of har vesting branches from trees or shrubs during the dormant season. “During the willow harvest, participants will have the opportunity to learn the full process of harvesting and processing willow specifically for basketry,” Campbell shared. As participants tr y coppicing, they will learn about the age-old method of cutting willow to encourage healthy regrowth and ensure a sustainable harvest year after year. Using hand pruners, volunteers will cut willow rods from the base of the tree. Vo l u n te e rs w i l l a l s o inspect the willow rods, selecting the best sizes and quality for basket making or craft purposes and will help to organize the harvested rods into bundles, preparing them for drying or further processing. “Beyond the practical skills, the annual willow har vest is a chance for participants to get outside, connect with nature and understand sustainable land management,” Campbell said. “It’s a hands-on, immersive day that blends craft, conser vation and community learning.” In 2018, the Horn Farm planted more than two dozen varieties of willows cultivated for basketr y. While thousands of basket-weaving branches are har vested each winter, the willows spend all year nourishing healthier soils and retaining water. A Hospitality Career Exploration Workshop was one of the recent events hosted by the LCWDB.
The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) held a series of events in November that brought hands-on career exploration and p ers on al de velopment opportunities to Lancaster County students. On Nov. 12, the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association hosted a Hospitality Career Exploration Workshop at the Lancaster Convention Center, spons ore d by t he L C W DB. Nearly 100 students in grades seven through 12 participated in culinary and pastry arts activities and heard from industry experts about career building in one of Lancaster County’s largest employment sectors. On Nov. 13, the LCWDB held its first-ever Youth Conference at Millersville University, welcoming more than 130 high school students from across the county. Students heard motivational keynotes from national speaker Mark C. Perna and local ar tist and Ripple Hub founder Alexander Colon. T h r o u g h o u t t h e d a y, students participated in interactive workshops on résumé writing, interview skills, workplace readiness, postsecondar y options,
and emotional well-being. More than 20 employers and community partners also took part in the event’s resource fair. Also on Nov. 13, Career Ready Lancaster! held a connections meeting at Armstrong World Industr ies , where over 100 employers, educators, and community partners gathered to hear Perna’s presentation on inspiring the next generation. Attendees engaged with the insights and reflected on new strategies for supporting youth success.
