Explore Robert Fulton’s Birthplace In Quarryville

ites throughout Lancaster County attest to the area’s rich and deeply rooted history, from establishments that have operated for over a century to sites that have played a significant role in many historical events. Just south of Quarryville lies one such landmark: the Robert Fulton Birthplace, located at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. Built in 1750 by James Gillespie, the building initially served as a small tavern on his 545-acre plantation. It fell under the ownership of Robert Fulton’s father in 1764; Robert, the future famed inventor and artist, was born upstairs above the tavern in November 1765 and likely resided there until 1770. Although the structure has endured a great deal of restoration over the years, visitors can explore the inside

White. “It allowed merchants and farmers to transport goods and travel to surrounding areas and even Philadelphia.” White, who has been with the organization for 18 years, was initially drawn to Lancaster County by the many railroads and historical sites. Since joining the historical society, he has researched and written several books with SLCHS treasurer Mike Roth and dedicated hours to archiving and researching material historically relevant to the area. “We do a lot of our own research, but a vast amount of information is brought in by local families that have resided here for generations,” White said. “People bring in old photos of what the farms looked like and a lot of family tree information.” Surrounding the birthplace, the pasture has been maintained by volunteer Carlton Groff for the last three years. Groff, who previously

owned an orchard and greenhouse business, oversees the landscape on the property and has fostered lush flora throughout. “We’ve never had anyone like him,” said White. “Robert Fulton’s mother, Mary, was an avid gardener, so his gardens are a nice way to pay homage to her as well.” Groff also maintains the nature trail and added multiple improvements, such as laying gravel and placing drains. Anyone interested in being added to SLCHS’ list of docents may call the office at 717-548-2679. On Wednesday mornings, those interested in assisting with cataloging information are invited to come lend a hand. SLCHS is primarily supported by donations and sales of the yearly calendar and handmade Christmas wreaths and decorations, which are sold on one weekend in December. of the building, including a bounty of artifacts, paintings and home furnishings indicative of what life was like during Fulton’s time. Several educational videos on Fulton’s life and accomplishments, as well as the history of the property, are also made available to curious guests. Adjacent to the birthplace is the L, O & S Nature and Rail Trail, a 1.5-mile, looped walking trail that crosses through the surrounding woodland, meadow and wetland habitats. The trail runs along the course of the old Lancaster, Oxford & Southern Railroad, which cut through the property and led to Pilgrim’s Path - named for its role as part of the Underground Railroad. The property is maintained by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS), located directly across Robert Fulton Highway. “The railroad changed the area forever,” said SLCHS president Stan

Carlton Groff points out plants and flora that have been cultivated along the nature trail.

The tournament has been held for the last 15 years, serving as one of the Solanco Education Foundation’s largest fundraisers. “Many board members are golfers,” said Becky Guhl, executive director for the organization. “They knew this was a good way to interest people in the foundation and give them a round of golf.” The putting contest will return this year, as well. “There’s a good amount of ribbing involved,” said Guhl. “It’s a fan favorite. Even the golfers come down to watch.” The money raised from the tournament directly benefits the Solanco Education Foundation’s scholarship fund, which includes the Solanco Education Foundation Scholarship, Futures Scholarship and Resilience Scholarship. Each one provides financial assistance for Solanco residents ranging from first-generation college students to trade school applicants. “We were able to give over $18,000 in scholarships last year,” said John Waggoner, the foundation’s vice president. “It was an incredible success, and we’re hoping it will be as big this year.” Waggoner has been assisting with the tournament for the last five years and handles the investment of funds for the foundation. The imprint of the Solanco Education Foundation on the community doesn’t end with scholarships; the funds raised from the tournament benefit many more of the foundation’s endeavors. Venture grants are frequently given to teachers for innovative projects that fall outside of their budget, and programs have included a middle school garden club, an interactive kindergarten learning program and a ukulele class. Yet another beneficiary of the golf fundraiser is the Solanco Strong initiative, which aims to provide assis-

tance to those most in need throughout the community. The initiative has aided students whose electricity has been shut off as well as those lacking the funds for Advanced Placement courses. “Solanco Strong was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Guhl. “Students can’t get a good education if they’re worried about where they’re going to sleep tonight.” For more information, contact Guhl at 717-786-5611 or becky_guhl@solancosd.org.

Safe Kids Lancaster County, in collaboration with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health), is manufacturing and distributing free hay hole covers to the community. Funding was made available by the American Trauma Society - PA Division. Based upon recent data from LG Health, falls due to open hay holes are a recurring farming injury in children. Hay hole covers are intended to reduce severe injury and death due to falls. The covers must be installed and used correctly. The hay hole covers come with all the required materials, are easy to assemble and install, and come with instructions. The covers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and LG Health will deliver the covers to homes/farms. To order hay hole covers, contact Lindsay Pringle at 717544-3807. Callers will need to provide their name, address and phone number as well as the number of covers requested and the number of children on the farm.
