High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, will present its spring musical, “The Secret Garden,” on Thursday, March 2; Friday, March 3; and Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m. Director John Biles hopes to explore a style of theater that is drastically different from last year’s production of “Seussical,” and the cast has been working hard to prepare for show time.

Since Biles first became involved with Solanco’s theater program in 2018, he has made a concerted effort to explore a wide range of musical theater styles. This choice has allowed student actors to experience everything from contemporary theater to traditional theater to jukebox musicals. Biles’ desire to explore new areas led to his decision to choose “The Secret Garden” for the spring 2023 musical, which will see the students tread new ground stylistically. “The Secret Garden,” will use a heavier tone than past plays and is set in the early 20th century. “It’s important to me that our audiences be exposed to a full complement of styles,” said Biles. “It would be a shame to present a narrow style of musical.”

“Incorporating a completely new dance style was certainly a large challenge. This is a type of dance that I have never done before,” said Lydia Young, who plays Mary. “Although it is a wonderful learning experience, and I am thrilled to be involved in it.”

With the exploration of new theatrical styles comes an array of new challenges. Due to the space restrictions of the auditorium, changing scenes and moving props is severely limited. The crew came up with a unique solution to change sets by having certain actors switch the scenes seamlessly, and removing the need for nearly every traditional blackout. Biles also noted that most of the wardrobe for the show is being

On Dec. 1, 2022, Sight & Sound Films released “I Heard the Bells,” a feature-length film that marked the beginning of the company’s foray into the world of movie production. The film, which follows the story of famed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was shot almost entirely in Lancaster County and was shown in theaters across the country.

Sight & Sound Theatres, the parent company of Sight & Sound Films, is known in the area for the many stage productions that it offers throughout the year, and it hopes to continue its expedition into film with more movie productions.

“We are excited to take our storytelling beyond the stage,” said Katie Miller of Sight & Sound Theatres.

The production team filmed at several locations in Lancaster County and near Sight & Sound Theatres, including downtown Strasburg, the Strasburg Rail Road, Landis Valley Museum and Hope Episcopal Church in Manheim. “We live in such a rich land, both historically and visually,” said Josh Muffley, production manager for the film. “We felt that we had a lot of resources at our disposal

right in our backyard, which granted us the ability to accurately re-create things from the time period.”

The film was also shot at a handful of locations outside of the county, the farthest away being the Longfellow Museum in Boston. Many scenes were filmed in Gettysburg at a farmhouse owned by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. The film takes place in the mid-19th century and depicts events from the American Civil War. The ability to use

Solanco’s Logan Wagner (middle), with support from his parents, Steve (left) and Carmen Wagner, pledged to continue his academic and golf careers at Christopher Newport University during an NCAA Commitment Day ceremony on Jan. 31.
Wagner Signs Letter of Intent

The girls’ basketball team split their last two regular season games, falling to Section Two leader Manheim Central 64-30 before improving to 5-7 in league play and 8-14 overall with a 59-32 senior night victory over Garden Spot Tuesday, February 7.

That season-ending win started by recognizing seniors Paige Althoff, Jenna Ehlers, Sarah Landis, Frances Northern, Kara Peace, Arianna Seiberlich, Stella Woy and Maite Grandja. Head coach Chad McDowell, who was unable to attend, congratulated the seniors who have had to persevere and

deal with adversity all four years of their high school career, via a letter read by interim head coach Jeff McCardell. “As freshman, they experienced the opportunity of winning the section championship. As sophomores, they dealt with the covid guidelines of wearing masks while playing and as juniors

and seniors, they had to deal with many adult situations that had them grow up fast,” read McCardell. “They have always worked hard and always put the team and Solanco family first. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them and love them as if they were my own daughters. I wish them the

best of luck in whatever their future holds and am blessed to be called their coach for the past four years,” he continued. “Thank you for being the great young ladies that you are.”

And with that, Solanco put together one of its strongest, if not the strongest, outing of the season. They split the series against the Spartans with their largest point total and largest margin of victory in a 59-32 result.

Eight different players reached the scoring column and all 13 players contributed with court time. Solanco held a 12-4 first quarter lead and went on to outscore the Spartans in each of the next three quarters, including a convincing 34-16 run through the second half.

Ehlers recorded a doubledouble to spark the attack. She dropped a game-high 22 points (17 in the second half) and hauled in 14 rebounds. Althoff scored in every quarter and finished with nine while Josie Janssen and

Seiberlich followed with seven points each. Landis (6), Northern (4), Peace (2 points and 7 assists) and Woy (2) also contributed.

“The first time we played them Jenna was out with an injury and Sarah got injured in the second quarter and did not play the second half,” McCardell recalled. “And we had an off-night shooting. Tuesday we had more players available and were able to pressure their guards which resulted in 23 Garden Spot turnovers and 12 steals for us. We outrebounded them 42-22 and 34 of our points came in the paint.”

Solanco was coming off a lopsided 64-30 loss against Section Two leader Manheim Central.

“They came to play and hit three threes to start the game,” said McCardell. “They did not want to share the section title like they did last year and played like it.”

The Barons bolted to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and pushed out to a 33-14 halftime advantage. The hosts took charge in the second half as well, winning 31-16.

“They mixed up their pressure and their halfcourt defense gave us fits,” said McCardell. “We had 24 turnovers and 17 were in that first half.”

The pressing team also took advantage of the free throw line, connecting on 22-of-29 attempts.

“The fouling was definitely lopsided,” McCardell said. “We were just 2-of-7 from the foul line and we were not pressing. Hard to understand that.”

Ehlers finished with 15 points and scored all 11 of Solanco’s second quarter points. Althoff added seven points, all in the second half. Maddie Knier bucketed a game-high 21 for the Barons, connecting on 12-of-15 free throws.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The boys’ basketball team faced the top team in Section Two, Manheim Central, and the team that sits just ahead of them in the standings, Garden Spot, in their final games of the 2022-23 season.

The Barons, tuning up for the post-season and a section title, spoiled senior night for the Mules on Friday, February 3. After recognizing Noah Baber, Tyler Burger, Elijah Cunningham, Manny Himes, Braxton Whisman and Jadon Yoder, the Barons quickly got

down to business, sprinting to a 12-0 advantage and cruising to a 24-7 first quarter lead. They cooled down a bit in the second half but still dominated, winning 54-25.

Solanco struggled in the second quarter as well, managing just three points as the Barons built a 37-10 halftime advantage.

The third quarter proved to be Solanco’s only highlight as the hosts managed a 10-8 advantage. The Barons, who tallied 18 points off of Solanco turnovers, sat their starters for most of the fourth quarter.

“This is frustrating for me because I don’t believe we’re a 6-15 team,” said head coach Anthony Hall. “I mean, really. We were 6-5 at one point this year but as we moved on, the loss point margin has gotten higher. I believe in them more than they believe in themselves.”

Noah Bailey led Solanco’s side of the scoring with seven points. Trey Grube, who went over the 1,000 career points plateau last year at Solanco, was held to 17, below his 22.5

Blood Drive

team high average.

“I thought Isiah Wright came in and did a great job,” Hall said. “He’s a freshman and had Grube frustrated.

Nolan Wagner, also a freshman, did a nice job as well.”

In New Holland Tuesday, February 7, the Mules were looking to end the season on a positive note, splitting the series against Garden Spot, a team they lost to by just ten points in their first meeting.

Solanco got off to a strong start, taking a 13-10 lead after eight minutes. But then the wheels fell off. The Spartans exploded over the middle two frames, pouring in 39 points, including nine treys, while holding the Mules to 19, and taking a 49-32 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Solanco fought back, winning the final frame 14-9 but it was too little, too late. The Spartans prevailed 58-46.

“We went in knowing they like to shoot the three and they did,” stated Hall. “They made a dozen. And, in what has become a pattern for us, we managed just single digits in the third quarter once again. You look back and take away the third quarter in our games and we’re either winning or right in there.

“Manny played his best game of the year and finished with 12 points,” Hall added. “Noah Baber had 11.”

Jaydon Yoder and Brock Osborne both finished with eight as the Mules cap their season at 6-16 overall.

rented from The Costume Shop at Millersville University, and he is excited for the audience to see the outfits come show time.

The musical is adapted from the 1911 novel of the same name, which follows the story of Mary Lennox, a young girl who goes to stay with her uncle after her parents die. At her uncle’s home, Mary discovers a secret garden that hasn’t bloomed in years, and she helps to bring it back to life. The tale explores themes of grief, healing and hope. “The story is about overcoming extraordinary levels of grief. How do we overcome the emotional paralysis that can come with overwhelming grief?” said Biles. “It’s a beautiful story of life, death and rebirth.”

The cast has weathered many

other challenges while preparing for the show; certain scenes are emotionally heavy and demand vulnerability from the actors. The emotional gravity of the play has required the actors to not only be vulnerable around their friends but prepare to be vulnerable before the audience. “I hope the audience connects with the emotions that the characters are feeling and leave feeling like they are really part of the story,” said Young.

“We talk a lot as a cast about what it means to be courageous,” said Biles. “This cast is fearless.”

Trivia Night frompg 1

to begin reviving the programs after the hiatus. Gruber, who has been involved with the library for two decades, volunteered to coordinate the event.

Gruber was a starter on Penn Manor’s quiz bowl team for four years, and each year his team competed at the national level. When Gruber was a junior, his team won WGAL’s “Brain Busters” competition. “It was a nice way to work your brain a bit, and it’s fun to see what you know and to challenge yourself,” Gruber said. “Everyone has different strengths, so it’s fun to see what other people know, too.”

Although the format for high school competitive trivia is different from recreational trivia at the library, Gruber aimed to create questions that will be accessible to players but also offer them a challenge. “You don’t need a Ph.D. to do it or anything. It’s not the most esoteric thing,” added Gruber.

The number of trivia night participants has steadily grown since the event’s return, with as many as 50 people attending a recent game. “(Gruber) does a wonderful job with trivia night. We were amazed that he’s offered us so many great programs,” said Sharon Roche, program director of the Quarryville Library. “No matter who you are, you’ll have at least a few questions that you can answer.” The winning team or player will receive a a family pass to Longwood Gardens.

Trivia night is one of many programs offered by the library. Roche has expanded the roster of programs to include activities such as digital literacy courses. The courses seek to educate people in the community on ways to avoid online scams and other dangers of the internet. The Quarryville Library also offers programs that businesses can enroll their employees in to receive training in areas such as social media. The programs are funded by the Workforce Development Grant from Millersville University. “We want to be a resource for the community,” Roche said.

Photo Contest frompg 1

This year, a new category has been added: Agriculture. For the first time, organizers will accept photographs that depict farm-related activities, people or landscapes. “This is such a farming community. It seemed wrong to not add the agriculture category,” said Chotty Sprenkle, contest coordinator.

The other categories are Wildlifeplants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and fungi (no domestic animals); Landscapessites, scenery and historic buildings; and Trailcam - photographs captured on remote cameras.

Sprenkle hopes that adding Agriculture will be a better fit for some photos. “One (photo last year) that came in was (a person) picking tomatoes off the vine. It was absolutely beautiful and depicted what the watershed is all about,” she said. “We put it in Landscapes, which didn’t

seem right. (The new category) will be a better fit for a lot of entries.”

Other changes this year are that photographers will be asked to submit hard copies for judging, rather than emailing photos, which was done during the pandemic, and that photos can measure 8.5 by 11 inches or larger. “People who entered said that when we had the 8 by 10 rule, it would cut off their photographs. You want the full image; you don’t want to have to crop it,” said Sprenkle.

All photographs must be taken within the Octoraro Watershed, which includes Cecil County, Md., as well as the following townships in Pennsylvania: Eden, Bart, Sadsbury (in both Lancaster and Chester counties), Colerain, West Sadsbury, Highland, West Fallowfield, Upper Oxford, Lower Oxford, East Nottingham, Little Britain, Fulton, East Drumore and West Nottingham.

Entries will be judged in three age categories: Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2, age 12 and under. Monetary prizes and ribbons will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in all categories. There will also be a Best of Show winner and a People’s Choice award.

This year, the photographs will be judged by a professional photographer. All entries will be displayed, and the winners will be recognized

at the OWA annual membership meeting on Thursday, March 23, at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville. “After that, the photos will be displayed at the Atglen, Oxford and Quarryville libraries thorough spring and summer,” Sprenkle noted.

For more information, call Sprenkle at 610-593-2808, text 484-8885416 or email rcsprenkle@aol.com All photos must be received by Tuesday, March 14.

existing locations that were historically preserved and accurate for the time period saved Sight & Sound the time and money that would have been used to construct the sets. Although most of the scenes could utilize these locations, the production team built a set for the church that is featured in the beginning and end of the film. “It was such a specific and pivotal part of the film that we knew we wanted to take the time to build it early on,” said Muffley.

The talent for the film consisted primarily of local actors, many of whom are currently performers and employees at Sight & Sound Theatres. Sight & Sound Films also partnered with a few living history groups to find actors, and performers came to Lancaster from as far as Virginia, New York and New Hampshire. For the primary speaking and second-tier roles, auditions were held at Sight & Sound Theatres early in production.

The film relays a message of hope in dark times, as it follows Longfellow’s struggle with grief and loss amidst a civil war. “The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. People really feel like they can relate to or are inspired by the message of the film,” said Muffley. “I Heard The Bells” was shown at around 1,200 theaters nationwide.
