LCHS To Present “Once On This Island” hen Emma Reynolds, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) spring musical, considered shows for 2022, she wanted something fun and fresh for the students, but she also wanted something that she and the cast members could relate to. Reynolds chose “Once on This Island,” because she and others involved in the show loved the message. “We loved the themes (of the show),” said Reynolds, who noted that the energy and catchy music were also draws. “There are a lot of strong themes of faith, hope, and love.” LCHS will present “Once on This Island” on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 17, 18, and 19, at 7 p.m. in the LCHS auditorium, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster. “Once on This Island,” written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, combines “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy with Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” The story opens on a

Another challenge is having much of the cast on stage at the same time. “What’s unique about this show is the ensemble,” Reynolds explained. “They are considered the storytellers, and they are on stage almost the entire show.” Directing the

Those middle teen years can offer a conundrum for parents and kids alike. Teens ages 14 and 15 are hardly children anymore, but they are still too young to work in most jobs. Michael Kurland, youth sports and activities manager with Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, has a solution. During the summer of 2021, Kurland ran Manheim Township’s

5 p.m. each day. “(Stars in Space Camp) is really a great way for a student to explore the arts,” said Dienner, who noted that the program will include tumbling, music, crafts, and dance, along with devotions and worship. Musical theater camp will give students ages 10 to 18 a chance to take part in the production “Seussical Jr.” directed by Stephanie Morales. The camp will run on weekdays from July 11 to Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Students will audition for the show, but each camper will be guaranteed a part. “(This camp) has been such a valuable experience for kids,” said Dienner. “It gives them a chance to perform on

a full stage with costumes and lighting in a real theater.” The camp will include devotions, small group time, and opportunities to chat and pray. Performance of the show, which will be open to the public, will be held on Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. Tickets will be necessary to attend. A Summer Dance Intensive program for intermediate and advanced dancers will be held from Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the academy. The program, which is for students age 12 and up, will bring in guest artists to instruct the students. Camp Create is specifically designed for those age 13 and

up with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Trained teachers work with the students in dance, movement, and artwork. The camp will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5, and a performance will be given at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5. “This has been a tremendous program,” said Dienner of Camp Create. According to Dienner, each camp includes activities designed to help students find their own identity. “The strength of Cavod is believing in each person and pulling out their God-given gifts and talents,” she noted. More recently, grants from UPMC Pinnacle Foundation and the Steinman Foundation have sustained the program. “(Those grants) enabled us to implement this food program,” said Fisher. SAIL peer mentors provide a variety of services to inhome providers, including help with obtaining and renewing licensure. Fisher noted that when an in-home provider is primarily Spanish-speaking, mentors may serve as translators. Valente added that mentors will support needs as varied as picking up and delivering items necessary for the day care or providing information on healthy eating.

Boxes of food, which included onions, cantaloupe, pasta, canned fruit, and fruit juice, were delivered through the child care providers to lowincome families that had been adversely affected by the challenges of the pandemic. Child care providers also received food and hand sanitizer. “It is our goal to continue (the program),” said Lorita Valente, executive director of community programs with Luthercare. “We plan to do it the last Thursday of every month at this point and add more (child care) providers and volunteers as we go along.” Volunteers are needed to help the boxes reach

With the advent of COVID-19 and resulting restrictions, SAIL representatives knew they had to dig deeper to help families served by in-home child care providers. “One of the things we decided to do was to look at the emerging needs of the community in response to the pandemic,” said Ryan Fisher, assistant vice president of philanthropy with Luthercare. What they found resulted in SAIL honing its focus. “Through our collaborative with the United Way and with Lancaster General Health as our partner, we discovered there were a large number of families served by in-home child care providers that were food insecure and qualified for distribution from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” said Fisher. By February, that research resulted in a pilot program

When audiences come to a performance of “Songs for a New World,” they can expect something a little different than a traditional musical. “It’s like paying for one show, but you’re actually seeing 15,” said Wally Calderon, who will direct the show for Servant Stage. As Calderon explained, “Songs For A New World” is a collection of songs that are intertwined. “It’s a very interesting piece of theater,” he stated. “People are used to going to see a show where they are following one story in the same setting, but in this show, these are 15 different stories. Every song is its own story, its own character. They are all tied together through a couple of themes.” Those themes include the moment of decision, when people must choose to back away from something, move forward or shift gears entirely, he said. “The decision might be about love, or it might be a decision about family or about life in

general or about a career,” he remarked. “When I’m watching it, I find myself getting caught up and wanting to hear more from each song, but we have to go on to the next one.” Written by Tony Awardwinning composer Jason Robert Brown, the show was created in 1995, but it isn’t dated, Calderon said. “There are so many themes in this show that are still relevant, especially in today’s world,” he noted. Some songs feature heavier themes and others are more comedic. “All of the songs have aspects that are applicable to the lives of our audience,” Calderon explained. “The songs are a direct commentary to our audience, telling us that we all face these tough decisions and these moments when we make them, and we may think we’re the only ones going through that, but we’re not. We’re not alone.” “Songs for a New World” features four roles, but the Servant Stage production is

Discovering The Old Route 30 BY ANN MEAD ASH

The New Holland Area Historical Society invites local residents to take a trip through Lancaster on the Old Lincoln Highway (Route 30) via a presentation by Benton Webber of Manheim Township, who has sleuthed out the original locations of 40 concrete marker posts placed along the Lincoln Highway where it traveled through Lancaster in 1928. Webber will give his presentation in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees will be required to wear masks. Webber embarked on a journey to find the presentday whereabouts of all 40 of the marker posts after obtaining a copy of the

1928 list describing the original location of each marker. He also found an updated list from 1960 that noted that 22 had remained in their original locations that time. “There is one today in its original position,” said Webber, who noted that the post is at Third and Chestnut streets in Columbia. Webber visited the post and took measurements, and he had a portable replica built. In September 2021, he began taking the replica to the original locations as he found them and posting photos from each excursion on Facebook. He plans to complete the project with a Facebook post on May 28. The markers were put up on a single day in September 1928 by Lancaster Boy Scouts. A representative of the Lincoln Highway Association, an organization

founded in 1915 that was dedicated to making public improvements, selected the locations for the posts. “They were trying to figure out how to connect different points,” noted Webber, who added that in Pennsylvania many roads were gravel, well-graded, and traveled regularly. “The Lincoln Highway stretched from New York to San Francisco, and it was the nation’s first transcontinental highway,” he said. Researching the original locations presented challenges because of the changes in road names, locations, and landmarks. “Some were easy, but most were not,” said Webber, who said that finding the southeast corner of Hamilton Watch Factory was pretty easy, but that determining one location in Columbia was not. “The one that vexed me the most was opposite Home of a Million Parks,” he said, adding that the problem was a typo. “It was really Home of a Million Parts, which was a junkyard near Columbia.” Webber has worked with municipal officials, historians, and preservationists in his research. Webber’s work on the

For All Your Outdoor Needs

project is part of his goal to preserve Lancaster history. “I have been interested in telling and understanding the story of Lancaster,” he said. “One of the ways to tell it is how our roads connect us and help us to reimagine how things have changed in just a century and how much they can change … how they reflect the times and what we do.” More information about the Route 30 marker project may be found by searching for “Benton Webber” on Facebook.
