Who Are Our Top 30 and Grand Drivers?

Each year, the first 30 trucks that kick off the 26-mile Convoy consists of the 30 drivers that raised the most money in the previous year’s Convoy. This tradition of celebrating the Top 30 fundraisers at the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began very early in the event’s history. Since then, this special group of men and women have raised millions of dollars for our mission.

Up until 2017, raising $1,000 was enough to qualify for the Top 30. Once raising “a grand” no longer guaranteed a Top 30 spot, we created the Grand Driver designation. Every driver that raises $1,000+ but does not qualify in the Top 30 earns the Grand Driver title.

Congratulations and thank you to our Top 30 and Grand Drivers! This group of individuals receive special recognition leading up to the Convoy, at the Convoy and at a post celebration event in September.

Side by Side for Something Greater

Uncle and nephew Lenny and Karl Heiser share more than just a last name— they share a passion for bringing hope to children through the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy.

For uncle and nephew duo Lenny and Karl Heiser, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy is more than just an annual event—it’s a deeply personal tradition, one filled with memories, emotion, and an unwavering commitment to helping children facing critical illnesses.

Lenny’s journey with the convoy began in 2009, but his

connection to Make-A-Wish started even earlier. A lifelong member of his community, he vividly recalls when his young neighbor, Caitlyn, was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. “I told Caityln’s dad ‘I’ll take her in the Convoy with me if you want me to,’” he recalls. That year, Caitlyn rode in the convoy with him, marking the start of his

heartfelt involvement.

Caitlyn’s story took a hopeful turn—after years of treatment at Hershey Medical Center, she recovered, graduated from Ephrata High School, and pursued a career in teaching. Years later, she approached Lenny and asked for a reunion ride. At the time, he was driving Dominic, a wish child he had

taken for over a decade. With the blessing of Dominic’s family, Caitlyn joined them, making that convoy ride one of the most memorable. “It rained that day, but inside our truck, it was nothing but sunshine,” Lenny says, his voice thick with emotion.

Lenny’s roots with the convoy run even deeper. He remembers when the convoy

first passed his homestead in Akron in the early ’90s. Each year, his family hosted a cookout, gathering friends and neighbors to watch the trucks roll by. Though he wasn’t behind the wheel yet, he knew he wanted to be part of it. When his career finally allowed him to participate, he seized the opportunity, and he’s been driving ever since.

For Karl, the convoy was always part of his life. Growing up along the convoy route, he spent years watching the trucks roll by with his family, hosting cookouts and cheering on the drivers. “It was always a big part of us,” Karl says. “But I was a welder, not a truck driver, so I never thought about being in it myself.” That changed when he followed in Lenny’s footsteps and got his CDL. “Lenny shared his passion for the convoy, and after watching it for so many years, now it was my turn to

drive in it.”

Since joining in 2016, Karl has made a name for himself as a dedicated driver and top fundraiser. He recalls the moments that stand out the most—especially the annual prayer over the Wish Angel trailer. “That’s when the hairs stand up on the back of my neck,” he says. “It’s a reminder of the kids who aren’t with us anymore and why we do this.” Now, with a 12-year-old son of his own, Karl hopes to instill the same values in him. “We want to teach him that when you can give back, you do.”

Karl’s fundraising efforts extend far beyond the convoy. From organizing a bingo to mowing lawns and partnering with his wife on community

fundraisers, he goes above and beyond to support MakeA-Wish. “I don’t think of it as mine—it’s for them,” he says simply.

This year, Lenny and Karl will drive back-to-back in the convoy—Karl in the 8th position, Lenny in the 9th. For Karl, it’s a full-circle moment. “I looked up to him for so many years, seeing him do it. Now, I get to be right there with him.”

As the convoy rolls out this May, Lenny and Karl will drive back-to-back, embodying the heart and soul of the event. Their story is a testament to the enduring spirit of the drivers who dedicate themselves to making a difference—one wish, one child, and one mile at a time.
