Grant Reinforces North Star Initiative’s Mission

Within the complex world of nonprofits there exists a separate, supportive world - the world of grants.

Subsidized by philanthropic foundations, organizations and businesses, financial grants serve a very practical purpose. But also associated with grants are this connectivity piece and a very specific affirming element.

“Anytime we receive a grant it’s a communication of trust,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of North Star Initiative (NSI) for three years. “It means that people and organizations see the importance of our mission. It means we can do amazing work for (human trafficking survivors), and they’re flourishing. It’s a vote of

Step Into German Christmas Magic

This holiday season, take a trip to Europe without leaving Lancaster County.

“Ditch the mall and go straight to Germany for the day!” said Elise Fasnacht, chair of Lancaster Liederkranz’s Christkindlmarkt. “It only happens for one day, and it’s the most authentic holiday magic you’ll find in the area. It’s the perfect place to find a truly special, non-mass-produced gift.” Christkindlmarkt will be held on Sunday, Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. It will feature a variety of food, fun and entertainment for the whole family.

Aaron’s Acres is committed to providing support for families affected by disabilities. While Aaron’s Acres has a variety of resources at its disposal, the local nonprofit also has the wherewithal to access resources it doesn’t possess - resources that are available through

organizations like the Lancaster Law Foundation.

“Aaron’s Acres recently received a grant that supports families in need of legal services as they plan for their children who have disabilities,” said Risa Paskoff, Aaron’s Acres’ executive director. “It was a great way to help families begin the challenging conversation of

People are invited to browse more than 30 craft and gift vendors and enjoy traditional German food and beverages such as Glühwein, a hot mulled spiced wine. A variety of musical performances from various Liederkranz groups will entertain guests as well. Pictures with St. Nick and Ruprecht will be offered, along with access to a children’s playground and a bonfire with s’mores. Children’s crafts and gift shopping at Kinderland will be held inside the clubhouse on the lower level. Fest food and beverages will be sold outside at the pavilion, with seated dining available in the clubhouse.

“We hold traditional events like this to share, celebrate and support the preservation of German culture,” Fasnacht said, noting that the Liederkranz has been a vibrant part of Lancaster’s German-American heritage

how to plan for their children’s futures, especially as the parents age. Lawyers gave of their time and met with our families for initial conversations. Funds from this grant are then available if families wish to continue the conversations with the attorneys.”

“The mission of the Lancaster Bar Association and the Lancaster Law Foundation is to advance justice in the community and enhance that feeling of community,” said Mackenzie Haines, the Lancaster Bar Association’s director of programs and community initiatives. “Fellowship and justice are just two of our core values, and they really sum up what we do. We want to be in the community helping people out.”

disabled.

The attorneys’ work was performed on a pro bono basis.

“The main goal was to give families peace of mind,” said Haines. “Oftentimes, it can be a daunting conversation to start. We were so happy to pair with Aaron’s Acres to get it started.”

A total of 10 families dealing with disabilities attended the Planning With a Purpose Clinic, and half of those families decided to have further legal discussions with lawyers. Portions of the costs of those future consultations will be funded through the grant that Aaron’s Acres obtained from the Lancaster Law Foundation.

reviewed and approved by a Lancaster Law Foundation committee.

Aaron’s Acres is headquartered at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster.

“We gave the grant to Aaron’s Acres for them to use at their discretion,” said Haines, “and that money covered some of the legal fees. (The legal clinic) spurred more conversations involving families’ futures. But for some, they weren’t quite ready to think about the future.”

A philanthropic arm of the Lancaster Bar Association, the Lancaster Law Foundation conducted its Planning With a Purpose Clinic for families served by Aaron’s Acres on Sept. 16 at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. The three-hour event consisted of the Aaron’s Acres families meeting face-toface and one-on-one with local attorneys for 30 minutes to discuss the legal challenges that can arise when family members are

Among the legal issues discussed were guardianship, special needs trusts and financial and educational planning.

“Overall, it was a great meeting and a great environment,” said Haines. “Aaron’s Acres reached out to the foundation and told us they had families in need. The bar association asked attorneys to do the work pro bono, and they were happy to be there giving back.”

After Aaron’s Acres applied for the $3,000 grant, its request was

The grant to Aaron’s Acres was one of seven that have been awarded to similar organizations by the Lancaster Law Foundation this year. Also receiving financial support were Lancaster city’s Bench Mark Program, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program, Church World Service, MidPenn Legal Services, Tenfold and Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC).

The grants awarded to those seven organizations were valued at $53,445.

“The main goal of the grants is the same as the Lancaster Law Foundation’s, which is to promote equality and expand justice across Lancaster County,” said Haines. “You can see that the clinic fits into a lot of those categories.

The foundation’s executive board has a grant committee that collects grant requests, reviews them and makes decisions.”

The Lancaster Law Foundation was formed in 2002. Since 2020, the foundation has awarded $353,000 in grants.

“We’re well known in the legal community,” said Haines. “But outside of that, I don’t think people know about the work we’re doing. We’d like to do more, and anything we could do to expand in any way would be wonderful.”

Located at 28 E. Orange St., Lancaster, the Lancaster Bar Association boasts nearly 800 members - lawyers, judges, legal professionals and law students.

“A lot of our lawyers are involved in the community,” said Haines. “Oftentimes, they’re looking to give back. They have so much expertise. Anytime they get a chance to go out into the community, they love that.”

The 21st annual St. Edward’s Cookie and Craft Sale will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 8 a.m. until sold out at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster.

The event will feature more than 60 varieties of cookies sold deli-style by the pound. Boxes will be supplied, and attendees may choose their own selection of cookies. During the holiday season, St. Edward’s participates in the Jesse Tree Project, which provides holiday gifts to children in need in the Lancaster area. St. Edward’s gathers and delivers food to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry each month, and the church’s needle arts ministry provides prayer shawls to those who need comfort in times of illness or crisis.

In addition, the church participates in programs that feed the homeless in downtown Lancaster, provides books for prisoners in the Lancaster County prison system and takes part in backto-school backpack drives in the Hempfield community.

EPC was fantastic to work with. They did a mockup of the advertisement and showed us how many homes it would reach. They were super helpful to get our marketing department on board with all the details! – Abby Reiner, Lititz Christian Early Learning Center

confidence and support for our mission.”

On Oct. 20, NSI, a Lititzarea nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals who have been victims of human trafficking, received a $15,000 grant for daily operations from B.J.’s Wholesale Club, which is headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and operates a local location at 110 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The grant process, which was initiated by a local supporter and volunteer of NSI, took about four months to complete.

After B.J.’s Wholesale Club invited NSI to apply for the grant, NSI composed a formal grant proposal and submitted it, after which the request was granted.

“It’s a big part of our annual budget and a grant we haven’t gotten before,” said Clark. “To have a local tie to a national business is meaningful. I’d say that it’s larger than average. It’s a really big deal to us.”

“B.J.’s has a deep commitment to supporting families in the communities where we live and work,” said Kirk Saville, B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s head of corporate communications. “We are honored to continue supporting the organizations our team members care about most and to live our purpose of taking care of families who depend on us.”

that fit their purposes. By their bylaws, they have to make donations. We have to be a committed nonprofit doing good work in a cause. We want human trafficking to end. If we can show we’re truly making a difference, we’re also providing an opportunity that grant makers are looking for.”

Grants represent about 10% of NSI’s annual operating budget. The largest source of NSI’s funding - about 50% - comes from the local community, including business donations, private donations and fundraising efforts.

Typically, the grants that NSI receives range between $3,000 and $50,000.

“There are so many grant-making entities,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “There are a lot of philanthropists who have some funds and are looking for specific causes. They have a heart to be generous to the causes that matter to them. It’s become competitive because there are so many nonprofits. There are always opportunities for generosity to causes that matter to you.”

“The grant programs are important to us, and they can come in chunks,” added Clark. “Grant funding is exciting, and it makes a difference, but a lot of grant makers don’t fund daily operations.”

With assistance and input from Clark, NSI development director April Miller wrote and composed the B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant application in about six hours.

To this point of 2025, NSI has applied for 13 total financial grants, five of which were approved and four of which were declined, while the status of the other four have yet to be determined. NSI is planning to apply for three more grants before the end of the year.

“April was primarily responsible for this B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant,” said Clark. “We want to make sure it’s a match. In B.J.’s case, we were recommended to them; they invited us to provide an extensive application of what the money would be used for. We had to be clear we were doing things

With a focus on assisting survivors of human trafficking in Lancaster and Berks counties, NSI provides services like job training, an emergency shelter, restoration and continuing support of graduates. NSI employs 24 workers, seven on a full-time basis and 17 on a part-time basis, and benefits from the service of as many volunteers.

“A grant like this is really an expression of confidence,” said Clark. “This work is so crucial, and the way we do it is excellent. Anytime we receive a grant it’s affirmation. But everything we do is because of community funding. Most of our funding comes from local people. We exist because the whole community is behind us.”
