Not a Cookie-Cutter Sale

Just as the Quarryville Library offers items and activities that appeal to people of all ages, the library’s Friends group promises its Christmas Bake and Gift Sale will also have something for everyone.

The annual event will be held Friday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Carlson Room of the library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. All proceeds will go directly to the library.

One highlight will be 16 tables holding a wide variety of cookies that will be sold by the half-dozen, dozen, or party tray. There will also be candy and bread for sale. The tasty treats will be homemade by members of the Friends and other people from the community.

“It was all baked goods, mostly cookies, and then about four or five years ago, we had some donations

of more like decorations and nice little gift ideas,” said Deb Waite, president of the Friends of the

Library. “We decided to put up a table and have some gifts, and kids were picking out stuff for

Members of the Paloma School of Irish Dance have something for you.

It’s a gift of experience. It’s a gift of culture. It’s a gift of themselves.

“I think there’s a lot more dancing and a lot more music in

(Irish) culture,” said Esther Pujol, the founder and owner of Paloma School of Irish Dance. “I think the show embraces that, embraces that spirit. It’s about communities coming together and celebrating music and dance. The purpose of the show is to spread holiday cheer and bring some Celtic traditions to Lancaster County.”

Organizer Diane Herr is promising a positive experience for people who have attended the first five Journey to the Nativity events at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren and for those who will be going for the first time.

The live Nativity will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. outdoors at the church, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

The free event will take place indoors if there is inclement weather. There is no registration.

“The ones that already know the real meaning of Christmas, already know why the Savior came, will still want to come,” Diane said. “It’s important for you to just continually be refreshed in that even though you know. You get something from it every time, every time you read the Bible with the birth of Jesus. Every time you read that, there’s always something new that pops out to you,” she noted. “And sometimes we forget, we get caught up in everything, and you just need that reminder of this is what it’s all about. This is why He came. He came for every one of us. I think it’s good for that refresher just to be refueled, to be regenerated, to lift your spirits up.”

First-timers will also benefit from the experience. “For the ones that don’t know much about it, it’s a very simplistic way of learning from the beginning,” Diane said. “When Mary and Joseph find out that she’s going to have a child, and then they go on their journey, and then there isn’t any room at the inn, you’re finding out about that. And then

(attendees) are going go out to the shepherds’ scene, and this is where the shepherds learn from the angels that a King has been born, a Savior has come. And then you’ll follow to the last scene, which would be the actual Nativity, where the angels will sing, and the shepherds are there, and it’s just a very methodic way of someone who doesn’t know much about what this all came about and why or whatever to get that understanding.”

Visitors will gather at the church’s Family Life Center and be served snacks, hot chocolate, and hot cider before embarking on the 40-minute journey. “Everybody will get a color when they come in, like red, green, or yellow,” said Diane. “We’re going to put about 35 to 40 in each group. So when we have 35 of that group in there, they’re going to be the first ones to be called back. And about every 12 minutes, a new group will be called to go forth. So we can get quite a few people through.”

The Nativity will feature donkeys, sheep, and goats borrowed from members of the congregation. “Everyone seems to love the animals,” Diane said. “The kids love to see the animals when they come, and they like to see the shepherds interacting with the animals. They’re a highlight, I believe.”

Almost 80 Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren congre -

“We will have 76 members of this church in some shape or form that are either helping,” Diane said. “They may be helping in the kitchen, maybe in the Family Life Center. There will be people behind each scene or will be the narrators. You don’t see them. You only hear them speaking because when you’re at a scene, you’re just going to see the actors. You going to probably see 50 people in costume, but those other 20 are a key piece to the puzzle.”

Diane is planning the event with help from committee members Heather Kreider, Hans Herr, Melissa Houghton, Laurie O’Donnell, Amy Housekeeper, and Brian Mull.

their siblings or their mom or whatever. Then it kind of expanded,” she noted. “And so now when we get donations, because we also have yard sales, if it’s a little nicer than what you would want to put out at the yard sale and would look like a good Christmas gift, we put them aside and save them for this sale. We have gently used gifts for everybody. We have decorations and decor. And we also have a silent auction.”

The items up for bid will include a painting by Suk Suglie, whose works appear on Gallery Row in Lancaster; other pieces by local artists; a Mr. Peanut glass container; a first-edition series of cowboy books called “Bar X Boys”; a comforter; and a Crosley turntable.

“We’ve been storing up,” said Deb. “We have some really good items. We remind people this is all for the library, and usually people are very generous.”

There will be live music on Dec. 13, with Dave Kilby and Sylvia Reece performing Christmas tunes on the dulcimer and autoharp.

Friends of the Quarryville Library secretary Donna Trimble said people should attend “to

support the library and get some good cookies.”

“I talk to people who don’t bake anymore,” she added. “Even if you do, you could never get such a nice selection of all these different cookies and buy just a few of a bunch of different kinds, and our prices are low.”

Debbie Moyer, the vice president of the Friends group, noted that customers should plan to stop by on Dec. 12 if possible.

“I know the first time I came before I was part of the Friends, I think I came the second day. There wasn’t as much left,” she said. “They told me to come the first day next year, which I did. And there was a lot of variety of cookies. Even if you bake yourself, you’re not going to be able to bake that many varieties. It’s nice if you want to get a bunch of different kinds, especially for a gift and people take them to work.”

Deb noted that it is a critical time for the library. “It seems sometimes to me like not as many people read as they used to, but this library is a thriving part of this community and a lot of things go on here,” she said. “I wish people could see the toddler programs and events

for teenagers. Everybody is covered. There’s something for everybody, and that’s not just a cliché. And all of that takes money, so the Friends of the Library do anything we can think of that could help the staff or the library. That’s something that they don’t have to pay somebody else to do.”

Deb’s husband, Chris, a skilled handyman, is a prime example of someone who helps the library run. A former president of the board, Chris frequently fixes things at the library and is assisting with the Christmas sale. “He was just here this past week tuning the instruments,” said Deb. “A lot of people don’t realize that just like checking out books, you can check out musical instruments. The ukulele was out of tune, so they called Chris. And while he was here, he checked on the lights that hadn’t come on properly the night before.”

It’s the type of dedication that is paramount. “That’s what it takes now,” Deb said. “It’s good that people, individuals, step up and do what we can. And one way that people can do that is by coming and supporting our sale.”

Local Farmland Preserved

State Rep. Bryan Cutler recently announced that a 39-acre crop and livestock farm owned by James and Sandra Sensenig, located in Little Britain and Fulton townships, is now officially marked as preserved.

The State Agriculture Land Preservation Board voted to preserve 2,079 acres on 24 farms in 14 counties across Pennsylvania, protecting them

from future residential or commercial development. Including the Sensenig farm, the state’s Farmland Preservation Program has protected 6,621 farms and 658,681 acres from future development across the commonwealth.

The Sensenig farm preservation will be funded by $88,166 from the state and $84,086 by the townships.

Paloma School of Irish Dance will present its Celtic Christmas Show present to the community at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Lancaster Mennonite School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Modestly priced tickets for the school’s first-ever Christmas performance, which will feature traditional and modern Celtic dance and music, can be purchased in advance at www.palomaboosterclub.com/ celtic-christmas-show-2025.html or at the door on the night of the show.

“I think the audience is going to fall in love with Irish dance,” said Pujol. “I hope (the audience members) are pleasantly surprised, like it’s better than they expected. I think there was a generation who was familiar with Riverdance. But I think there’s a younger generation who hasn’t been exposed to it or know what it is.”

The Celtic Christmas Show is a 90-minute performance that will be divided by a 15-minute intermission. Irish music, featuring

fiddles, will accompany the 20 dance numbers, but the show will not include singing.

“I think the best way to describe the atmosphere is merry,” said Pujol, a resident of Manheim Township. “Everyone is just so excited and preparing for the performance. I think people are going to feel the joy of the holiday season from the stage. It’s a chance for the performers to share what they do. They love to perform.”

Nearly 70 individuals from Paloma School of Irish Dance will perform at the Celtic Christmas Show, including college dancers, school-age students and adults. Many of the performers reside in the Manheim Township, Warwick, Conestoga Valley, Garden Spot, Lampeter-Strasburg, Donegal, Penn Manor, Solanco and Lancaster school districts.

The family-oriented troupe also includes many parents, children, siblings and cousins performing together.

“These kids are just everything,” said Pujol. “They’re kids who are

actively applying to colleges. Some are on the robotics team. Some are National Honor Society students. Some are football players. Some are very successful in other parts of their lives. They’re just exceptional, exceptional people.”

“When people come up to me at our shows, they say these kids are so talented,” added Pujol. “I’m lucky because I get to work with these kids who are such hard workers.”

A combination of the performing arts and sports, Irish dance demands athleticism, synchronization and repetition to succeed at high levels. Emerging dancers learn collaboration, accountability and problem-solving through their involvement.

Headquartered at 1285 Manheim Pike, Suite 3, Lancaster, Paloma School of Irish Dance was established by Pujol in 2015, partly as a way to stay connected with a discipline she was once involved with as a competitor and partly as a way to honor her roots. There are currently 125 students from all across Lancaster County and beyond enrolled in the school.

“It helps dancers reach their highest levels of dance, reach their potential and have them become good citizens,” said Pujol. “As they’re doing this, they’re learning important life lessons like leadership, teamwork and hard work. The dancing has opened a lot of doors for our dancers, not just in dancing but also in life.”

“It’s such a niche sport,” continued Pujol. “The school has grown now to bigger than it was before COVID. In a way, it has surpassed the goals I set for it. Now, here we are, and I’m enjoying it.”

“Irish dance still has a lot of its traditional roots,” said Pujol. “Some of the dances we’ll be doing onstage originated hundreds of years ago. A handful of our dancers are actively competitive. A lot of those who will be at the show have competed on the regional, national and world levels. They’re very competitive; they take it seriously. This will kind of be a nice break for them. It’ll be a nice way for them to show their craft.”

to the Nativity. “One of the main reasons it started was right at COVID when we weren’t meeting as a church,” Diane said. “It seemed like we were not falling apart, but we weren’t connecting. And I just thought, we need to do something. It was an outdoor event, and that’s what got it started, and it is a way to reach the community. We needed to get together and do something so that we can be celebrating the birth of Christ. In the years after that, it became more of a community outreach of getting the community to come and spreading the word of His birth and how that Jesus can change your life. Like the song goes, let Jesus change your life. He can, and He will.”

Mechanic Grove Church of the

Brethren is partnering with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM). “It would be greatly appreciated if people bring a canned good or make a monetary donation (to SNM), spread the word of the meaning of Christmas, and realize that giving back is an act of love,” said Diane. “I just feel it’s important when you bring your children, and for adults, too, that when children see that they are bringing a canned good, or they’re bringing something that’s going go back to the community, it just shows them a part of what love is all about,” Diane said. “It’s compassion for each other, and so I think that’s important for your children to know that because there is a need. A big need.”
