eather Landis was raised by a single mother. Money was tight, so Heather’s mother often served repetitive meals, including spaghetti and chicken potpie. When Heather was 10 and her mother was away, Heather went to the kitchen to play. She remembers making an absolute mess in the kitchen with her friends. “I learned very early on I cannot bake,” she said. “I tried and it was terrible!” After graduating from Manheim Central High School in 1997, Heather worked in many different restaurants as a bartender, a server, and a cook, as well as in other positions. As time went on, Heather decided to go to school for accounting and business management. With her associate degree, Heather worked at flooring company for about seven years, but was eventually laid off. A couple months later, she was hired as an accountant. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was furloughed in March 2020. It was during her furlough that her husband, Steve Landis, encouraged her to take a chance and start her own made-toorder food business. “He said, ‘How many times do we have to tell you to do this? If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. Just try it,’” Heather recalled. So she did it. In the beginning, Heather worked out of her home. Within two weeks, someone reported it. “It was fine, though, because

The Schreiber Center provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy services, such as occupational, physical, and speech-language therapy, for children from birth to the age of 21. In addition, the Schreiber Center offers early education preschool and child care services, recreational programs, behavioral health services, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. “The people at Schreiber are amazing,” said Lititz resident Michael Mengel. When Michael’s youngest daughter, Nicole Mengel, was 2 years old, she received speechlanguage therapy from Schreiber until she began kindergarten. “Nicole would not be where she is now without the help of Schreiber,” stated Michael. Nicole recently graduated from Adelphi University in Long Island with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. See Duckie Race pg 6

it just pushed me to go bigger,” she said. After going through the legal process and filling out the necessary paperwork, Heather found a commercial kitchen in East Petersburg in May 2020. She has been there ever since. When Heather and Steve were brainstorming ideas of what to name the business, Steve told her she had to find her niche. “The problem is that I don’t have a niche!” stated Heather. “I like to cook everything from many different cultures. I traveled to India, Mexico, and Jamaica, and I asked the locals where they ate.” From being in the kitchen at a young age to traveling, learning, and watching other people, Heather has gained a considerable amount of knowledge and experience. This has served her business, The Sink, very well. “Everyone says it’s everything but the kitchen sink,” explained Heather. “ Well, I want it to be everything and the kitchen sink. People need to not be afraid to try new things because you can be amazed by what you think you wouldn’t like.” For those who have been considering starting their own business, Heather offered some advice. “It’s terrifying,” she said. “You have to really, really want it. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and co-workers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to

create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying

equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, prereg-

Kevin Bedgood will return to Mulberry Art Studios in September to display “Dreams,” his latest collection of sculpted wood art. A First Friday reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 3, and the exhibit will run until Thursday, Sept. 30. “Dreams” is about the future. This show is an exploration of design and relationship concepts, seeking new directions of artistic expression. Bedgood has been experimenting with new tools and processes as well as playing with negative space and how it relates to the shapes around it. He works with new shapes
and with ideas and studies the visual impact made by his pieces. Often his pieces will involve turning multiple pieces of wood and then segmenting them and reassembling the pieces. Bedgood has been working with wood since childhood, and the last 25 years have been an exploration of the boundaries of woodturning. The primary tool for his sculpting is a wood lathe. He is also a teacher and demonstrator and has traveled throughout the U.S. and as far away as Australia to share his craft. Same Person, New Path One day in 2008, Hempfield High School alumna Hannah Johnson, who was a thirdgrader at the time, was bullied on the school bus for her weight. “She was so sad,” said Carrie Johnson, Hannah’s mother, speaking of the conversation she and Hannah had after the incident. “I thought to myself, ‘The way I handle this is really important because it’s going to stick with her.’” Hannah expressed that she wanted to live an active lifestyle like her mother. Carrie saw this as an opportunity to change the way she was living her life because she was very busy and spent a considerable amount of time working as a vice president for an organization. After making a change in her employment, which offered her more flexibility, Carrie found herself spending much more time outside with her family. That same year, Hannah and her younger sister, Libby, participated in a half-mile race. While taking photos of her daughters after the race, Car-
rie thought to herself, “There’s something more to this confidence piece you get when you set a goal and you accomplish it.” So that evening, she went home and Googled “girls’ selfesteem and running,” and she stumbled upon Girls on the Run (GOTR). A nonprofit organization, GOTR is a physical activitybased positive youth development program designed to enhance girls’ social, emotional, and physical skills and behaviors so they can successfully navigate life experiences. The program’s curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate physical activities. When Carrie recognized in 2009 that Lancaster County did not have a GOTR council, she created one. Carrie then spent the next several years growing GOTR Lancaster-Lebanon into a vibrant organization that has given more than 17,000 girls the opportunity to activate their internal power, find unconditional acceptance, and feel a

sense of belonging. “Without confidence, we don’t grow into our limitless potential,” stated Carrie. “Instilling confidence at a young age and reminding girls what makes them unique and special is key.” Carrie has decided to start a new chapter in her life and step down from her position as executive director of GOTR Lancaster-Lebanon. “I will coach individuals, help organizations tap into the human capacity, and lead self-discovery retreats for women,” she
explained. “It’s been such an honor and privilege to lead this organization and walk alongside such brilliant, kind, and smart people,” stated Carrie. “When I step away from being the executive director, I’m still going to be the same person and believe that everyone has gifts and power in them.” Carrie noted that GOTR changed her life and gave her the confidence to move to this new chapter. The Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations event provides fun for people of all ages. BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For about nine years, Narvon resident J. Arthur Moore, a retired teacher and author, has developed Civil War programs to be presented at schools and libraries. Moore not only writes his historical fiction from the point of view of the soldiers in the Civil War, but also shares the history of the real boys who served in the Civil War in his presentations. The presentations are also part of the Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. This year’s encampment, sponsored by the Southern Lancaster County Historical
Society, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3, from noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Courtesy of Moore’s book sales, the event is free to the public. “Education is important,” said Moore. In 2019, Moore was nominated and selected to receive Freedoms Foundation’s National Award, the George Washington Honor Medal. According to David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Moore’s book “Journey Into Darkness” exemplifies the essence of the National Awards: promotion of an understanding and appreciation for the country’s heritage, principles, and

According to Moore, Lancaster County is directly connected to Civil War history. “Lancaster County was the fifth part of the efforts to get to Harrisburg, but (the Confederates) got stopped at the bridge in Wrightsville,” he explained. “Thousands of troops were recruited out of Lancaster County, and troops from Lancaster County fought in Gettysburg. It’s part of America’s history and part of our (local) history.” At the weekend event, there will be tours of the camp, a food vendor, tactical demonstrations, and battle re-enactments. LOHF Awards Nursing Scholarships The Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) recently announced the recipients of the 2021 Nurse Education Scholarship. The purpose of the Nurse Education Scholarship Program is to develop the medical workforce that also cares for the mental well-being of Lancaster County youths and children. This year, LOHF is investing $40,000 in the education of local nursing students. This amount consists of $22,000 to 10 new scholarship recipients and $18,000 to previous recipients who are continuing in their degree program. LOHF Nurse Education Scholarships support the education of nurses in licensed practical nursing, registered nursing, Bachelor of Science in nursing, advanced degrees, and certificate programs such as certified school nurse or family nurse practitioner. The Giant Company recently announced that Pennsylvania customers who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will now be able to shop online for both grocery pickup and delivery via Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct using their Pennsylvania Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) ACCESS card. People in eligible lowincome households can adopt more nutritious diets with SNAP, increasing their food purchasing power at grocery stores and supermarkets. Those who are eligible receive an EBT ACCESS Card to make food purchases. Applications for SNAP and other public assistance programs can be submitted
at www.compass.state.pa.us. On-site County Assistance Office (CAO) services are also available if clients cannot access services through the COMPASS website, via the myCOMPASS PA mobile app or by calling the Customer Service Centers at 877-395-8930. To shop via Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct, customers need to add their EBT Card, add their groceries to their online cart and then enter their PIN and pay for the items. When customers shop online, they can only use their SNAP benefits on the same items that are eligible when shopping in the store. Lebanon VA Medical Center’s (VAMC) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, which is authorized by Congress. Five local organizations in nine counties around Lebanon VAMC received grants from the center totaling over $3.1 million. The Lebanon VAMC Health Care for Homeless Veteran staff has already helped to provide services to veteran families this year, such as eviction prevention, housing security deposits, utility assistance, and hotel placements during the pandemic. Boy Scout Troop 33, based in East Petersburg, has announced that Logan Lippert has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Logan, 18, is the son of Kene and Christine Lippert of East Petersburg. Before becoming a member of Troop 33, Logan was a member of Cub Scout Pack 133 of East Petersburg, where he earned the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting. During his time in Troop 33, Logan was the troop’s bugler, held the leadership positions of assistant patrol leader and senior patrol leader, and served as the den chief for Pack 133. Logan’s peers elected him to the Order of the Arrow, the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. He also earned his bronze and silver palms. For his Eagle Scout project, Logan built a
handicapped-accessible ramp to a local borough building. Logan recently graduated from Hempfield High School and the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center in Mount Joy. He currently works in the field of metal fabrication.

The donation resulted from Lancaster-area residents texting “elevate” to 55312, according to Mitzi Perdue, founder of Win This Fight. The funds will be used to further equip North Star Initiative as it expands the services it offers to survivors of
human trafficking. The organization’s long-term restoration home, The Harbor, provides survivors with 24/7 care, which includes medical and psychological treatment as well as education and career-building opportunities.
