The Bowers Writers House at Elizabethtown College, 840 College Hill Lane, Elizabethtown, will host Dr. Gene Ann Behrens, a professor of music and director of music therapy, on Thursday, Sept. 27, from 7 to 8 p.m. Behrens will present “Can Music Really Change the Brain? An Exploration of Neurology and Trauma.” The talk will showcase the changes that occur in the brain due to trauma, how music influences the brain, and how music can positively influence the neural processing of trauma. Book Sale, Craft Fair To Support Library GEARS Sets Programs By Chelsea Peifer
October will tip off with two popular annual events at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. First up, the Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library will host a book sale from Tuesday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 6, and on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, in the lower level of the library. More than 10,000 hardback and paperback books of various genres, along with DVDs, CDs, and audio books, will be available for the community to purchase, with all proceeds benefiting the library. A special preview event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2, when anyone who would like first dibs on the selection may pay an admission fee to shop. Thousands of quality used books will be available for the community to browse through and purchase at the Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library book sale, set to take place on select dates from Oct. 2 to 13. Additionally, the ninth annual Craft Fair With a Small Business Flair will be held at the library on Oct. 12 and 13.

GEARS has posted its schedule of programs and activities. Unless otherwise noted, separate costs have been set for GEARS members and for nonmembers. GEARS will accept registrations for girls and boys in grades one to nine for the BEARS Youth Basketball Program. Players will participate in practices and games from late November through the end of January 2019. The participation levels are grades one and two (instructional), grades three and four, grades five and six, and grades seven to nine. The draft days for children in grades three to six will be Monday, Nov. 5, for girls and Wednesday, Nov. 7, for boys. See GEARS pg 3

This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing See Prayer Service pg 5
