Earlier this year, the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-cost lunch in the Eastern York School District (EYSD) reached a high of just over 50%. To help support families in need, Swing for Change, a charity golf tournament, will be held on Saturday, July 26, at Cool Creek Golf Club, 300 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. It will begin at 8 a.m.
The tournament will be played as a scramble, and registration is open to individuals or groups.
Prizes will be awarded, and details are in the process of being finalized.
“The main purpose of the outing is to raise awareness of food insecurity in Eastern York School District,” said Tony Lewis, who is organizing the tournament with River’s Edge Community Services. “I was not aware of it until I began working with Power Packs and the Giving Table.”
Tony and his wife, Helen,
were instrumental in bringing the Power Packs Project - a Lancaster-based nonprofit that provides free food and a recipe for a meal weekly to families in need - to EYSD in 2023. They also expanded the program to include the Giving Table, supplementing
“Anything we can do to raise funds for children and families to have access to meals is a priority.”
the Power Packs distribution with additional nonperishables and other items. And they worked with WellSpan to secure a grant for cooking classes, offering EYSD students an opportunity to take an active role in healthy eating.
“(The golf tournament) will hopefully raise the awareness and provide some money to be used
on direct programs,” Tony shared. “Eastern York School District and River’s Edge Community Services were very helpful getting Power Packs established and care very much about the community and families. They both have been very receptive about the event and continue to work with me as the event is planned.”
Tricia Henise, president of River’s Edge Community Services, said she was happy to help Lewis when he approached her about the fundraiser.
“The golf tournament is a great opportunity to bring awareness of what many of the families and students of Eastern York School District are dealing with - food insecurity,” she said. “We get busy in our world and life that we forget to look around and understand what others are going through. This is a great opportunity to support and help others.”
As Henise explained, River’s Edge Community Services is a faith-based human services organization in partnership with

The event will feature 20 games of regular bingo, with four special-prize games for an additional cost. A 50/50 giveaway will also be held. Food, including baked goods, and beverages will be available for purchase.
“We are collecting nonperishable items for the food bank that is housed in our church,” Morrow said, referencing the Columbia Food Bank. “For every nonperishable item brought, you get a free (giveaway) ticket.”
This is the first time the church members are hosting a community bingo, and organizers are hopeful that the event will raise muchneeded funds for church projects and initiatives.

Morrow shared. “The proceeds from this event will go toward new lighting in the sanctuary, upgrading the heating and cooling system in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Hall and supporting our property budget.”
She noted that the church building, located at 340 Locust St. in Columbia, is truly a community space.
“Our church is not only used by our congregation, but by local Girl Scout troops, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of PA, as well as the Columbia Food Bank,” she explained, noting that the site also hosts other charitable events to benefit the greater community.
She encourages anyone who is interested to purchase a ticket for the bingo. Tickets will be available for a discount if purchased in advance. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
“It will be a fun-filled afternoon that benefits our church and com munity,” Morrow said.

What happens when high school students really want to dance, even though dancing is outlawed in their town? Find out when Susquehanna Stage presents “Footloose.” The musical, which is part of the theater’s youth and teen production series, will be performed on select dates from Friday, May 9, through Sunday, May 18, at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.
Based on the 1984 movie of the same name, “Footloose” focuses on Ren McCormack, a boy who recently moved from the big city to the fictional small town of Bomont.
“Ren was a partier, and he finds out that dancing and parties are banned in Bomont,” explained Landon Hunsicker, a high school senior who plays the character. “He bands together with other kids to try to lift the ban because they all want to be free to enjoy their lives.”
While that sounds like a lighthearted plot, the show explores deeper emotions, said junior Mia LaFontaine, who plays Ariel Moore, the daughter of the town reverend.
“One of the big overall messages in this show is that change can be good and change can be necessary,” she said, explaining that audiences will learn the reason for the dancing ban. “There’s a lot of grief in this show, and teaching you to move past your grief and to accept it and acknowledge that you can grieve for someone that you’ve lost. It’s really important.”
The show also explores the relationships between teens and their parents, she said.
“The show emphasizes that listening to youth is so important, because they are the next generation coming up,” Mia noted. “They have to learn to make their own decisions.”
For Deaglan Benson, a high school junior who plays the Rev. Shaw Moore, portraying the character has been a fun challenge.
“I’ve been looking at sermons online and learning more about religion,” he said. “The hardest part has been changing myself from teenager me to having to be a 50-something man who is stoic. I like to show emotion a lot, and this character doesn’t.”
His wife in the show is played by junior Riley Fidler, and while she also acknowledged that being a teen playing a middle-aged mom has been challenging, she said it’s been a little easier to relate to her character.
“She’s a complicated character,” she said of playing Vi Moore. “In some ways, I want to bring out that she’s kind of a cool mom and a little less uptight than the reverend, so I can add a little bit of myself into the character while still acting older. She’s trying to hold her family together.”
“Footloose” features a wide range of musical styles along with show-stopping dance numbers, Landon said.
“The stage show takes songs

From demonstrations of old-fashioned artistry to hands-on fun, Mayfest will offer something for everyone. The annual celebration will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Activities will be held along West High Street and North and South King streets and in Legion Park, 20 N. King St., Maytown, all within walking distance of the Maytown Historical Society’s museum at 4 W. High St.
Mayfest is a celebration of the past, an opportunity to mark the founding of the Maytown, which dates to May 1, 1760.
“Come to Mayfest to learn about your town’s past and to have a fun family day,” said Linda Good, Mayfest coordinator and vice president of the Maytown Historical Society. “You can expect to be entertained and also to learn about life in Maytown 265 years ago.”
Historical demonstrators will set up along West High Street.
Patriots Daughters of Lancaster will operate an interactive stand, highlighting Civil War medical information.
“Kids can experience tearing bandages, washing clothes on a washboard, stuffing a mattress, along with information on rationing during that time period,” Good explained.
The Color Green will offer a demonstration of glass blowing,
and Deb Gepfer will demonstrate needlework. She will also have Maytown needlework sampler patterns available for purchase.
Kelly McCart will demonstrate a pottery wheel, and Alpacas of York will provide a fleece-to-shawl presentation.
Penny candy will be available for children only. John Scarpato will serve as the event’s master of ceremonies and will rove throughout the festivities with a microphone, asking attendees historical questions for a chance to win prizes.
At 2 p.m., local couple Janie and Larry Garber will mark 50 years of marriage by renewing their vows at a ceremony in front of the museum.
Second-graders from Donegal Primary School will sing songs and dance to music written in the 1800s, Good shared. “Following the second-graders will be the traditional maypole dance done by students from Donegal Intermediate School (DIS),” she said. “To end the program, the entire town is invited to participate in a cake walk around the square.” There is an incidental charge for participating in the cake walk, and the prizes will be homemade cakes and cookies.
“There will be a narrated bus tour highlighting Maytown’s businesses in the 1800s,” Good said, noting that there is a small fee for adults taking the tour but there is no charge for

from the original movie and brings them in for characters to sing,” he said, noting that the soundtrack includes pop hits such as “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out for a Hero” and the title track. “There are songs people will recognize, but there are also original songs people might not know.”
Dance numbers take the show and give it a modern edge, said stage manager Karey Getz, who noted that she portrayed Vi in a production last year.
children who participate. “The bus will also stop, drop off and pick up at the huge vendor fair organized by the Shank Shoppe in Legion Park. There will be 93 stands in the park, with a variety of quality wares for sale and also including a petting area with goats.”
Numerous food trucks will set up along King Street, and the museum will sell hot dogs, chili and baked goods.
“A family scavenger hunt will begin near the museum, and the questions and answers will take you on a trip around Mayfest,” Good remarked. “Prizes for completing it will be a game played by kids in Maytown long ago.”
Crafts and games for children will also be featured. Special pillowcases made by the DIS sewing club and artwork from DIS students will be on display at the Maytown Church of God, 14 W. Elizabeth St.
At Maytown Reformed Church, 11 E. Elizabeth St., pictures of Maytown historical houses, created by firstgrade students, will be on display.
“All first-graders participated in Mayfest by drawing a picture of an actual house in Maytown,” Good explained. “Pictures were judged, and winner ribbons will be on the winning pictures.”
An old-fashioned popcorn wagon will be set up on High Street, and the old bank on West High Street, now a

“The choreography in this show is very fresh,” she said. “It’s not tired. It’s not something you’ve seen in other ‘Footloose’ products. Our choreographer is young, and she brought a fresh spin to it.”
And although the musical is set in the 1980s, it’s still relevant today, Riley said.
“I think there are a lot of parts of the show that can be relatable to a lot of people,” she explained.
bed-and-breakfast, will be open for self-guided tours.
At 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Bonnie Frank will showcase her prizewinning shelties in a dog agility show held at 111 S. River St. Access to the show will be through an alley behind the Church of God.
Tickets will be sold to win a hand-carved bird designed by local woodcarver Danny Ebersole, and the museum will be open with a new exhibit on Maytown businesses in the 1800s. The museum will also showcase a recently recovered needlework sampler made in Maytown. Two styles of handmade crocks - a jelly jar with a lid and a midsize crock - will also be sold to celebrate Maytown’s birthday. Proceeds from Mayfest are used to support efforts to preserve Maytown’s past.
“We are having a capital campaign to raise money to make our outbuilding climate-controlled in order to preserve our valuable archive collection,” Good said. “We also have monthly expenses to keep our museum and the property in good condition.”
The rain date for Mayfest will be Sunday, May 4, but many of the activities will not be held if the event is postponed.
For more information or to volunteer, call or text Good at 717-725-2437.
“It’s kind of an emotional roller coaster. … There are parts that are relatable for teenagers, parts for parents. Even though it’s set in the ’80s, there’s a lot of stuff that’s very relevant for today, like abusive relationships, family conflict and adults not listening to the youth.”
“Footloose” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, May 9, 10, 16 and 17, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, May 11 and 18, with an additional 2 p.m. performance on May 17. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www .susquehannastage.com.
The Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry will host a training event aimed at equipping youths with mental health awareness and suicide prevention skills. The Mental Health Awareness and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Training will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Parish Center, 404 Cherry St., Columbia.
This training is open to youths age 12 and older, as well as adult counselors. Parental consent is required for students under 18 who wish to participate in the QPR segment. The event, which is offered in partnership with Columbia Catholic Youth Ministry, will include a half-hour break for pizza, which will be provided.
The Mental Health Awareness (MHA) Training
portion of the event will educate participants on common mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, addiction, panic attacks, and eating disorders. It aims to reduce stigma, promote emotional wellness, and teach participants how to recognize symptoms and assist those struggling with mental health challenges.
The QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Training is an evidence-based, nationally recognized certification program that teaches suicide prevention techniques. Participants will learn to identify warning signs of suicide, engage with at-risk individuals, and connect them with appropriate resources. Each participant will receive a QPR booklet and certification upon completion.
The training will be conducted by Jayne Miller,
a mental health educator affiliated with WellSpan Health. Miller serves as WellSpan’s Lebanon County crisis intervention counselor and has extensive experience in mental health crisis intervention, education, and outreach. She has been recognized as one of the top trainers in the country for Mental Health First Aid USA.
QPR training is meant to empower individuals to act as gatekeepers in suicide prevention, ensuring that those in crisis receive support and intervention.
The Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry, a collaboration between St. Peter and Holy Trinity parishes, seeks to provide spiritual and emotional support for individuals experiencing mental health challenges and their families. While not a substitute for professional
treatment, the ministry offers education, advocacy, and more to foster a more informed and compassionate community.
Registration is free but required by Monday, May 5. While there is no fee to attend, donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of materials and lunch. For more information, contact deacon Jim Doyle at ccmentalhealth ministry@gmail.com or call 717-343-1102.
area congregations, service clubs and related agencies that cooperatively identify and actively pursue ways to meet the needs of the community within the EYSD.
“We are an organization that came together around 2015,” Henise explained. “The founder, Carolyn Livingston, started this organization so that all churches and organizations would come together to support the community.
She noticed that while churches were doing their own reach out, it was a little here and there. But by pulling all the churches and organizations together, we could help one another support the community without redundancy.”
River’s Edge has been able to support a variety of community initiatives, including Power Packs, a backpack program for the district, the Christmas outreach program
Project Toybox, book drives and more.
Tony expects the community to turn out to support the golf tournament, noting he’s seen firsthand the generosity of the people who use the services of Power Packs and the Giving Table.
“The reactions seen during the Power Pack and Giving Table pickups - a lot of them just need a little help,” he shared. “Showing up, making sure they do not take too much so the next person has enough, is a good feeling and shows the type of community we live in. Several volunteers have shared several stories of sharing and kindness.”
District representatives are happy Tony came up with the idea for the tournament.
“Anything we can do to raise funds for children and families to have access to meals is a priority,” said Ken Marx, business manager for EYSD.
Tony emphasized that all proceeds from the tournament will stay local.
“Exact distribution will occur after the event with ideas from the school district,” he stated. “It may include money for the Giving Table, food bank, unpaid student lunch balances or other areas of need.”
Lunch will be provided after the tournament by Big Bob’s BBQ. There is an option to purchase lunch only.
To register for the tournament or order lunch, visit https://s4ceysd .com through Friday, July 25.

the total bill for food and drinks,” said June Rabatin, a St. John’s resident who is on the fundraising committee. “You don’t have to show a flyer or sign up. It’s automatic. Hinkle’s has been wonderful to work with.”
This is the first time St. John’s residents are organizing an event like this, but they are no strangers to philanthropy. Throughout the year, they hold events such as a Fall Fest to raise money for the greater community.
“We want to give back,” Rabatin said. “We have a Residents Council, and they are the ones who decide where the money will go. We support several local charities.”
For many of the seniors, living at St. John’s is the first time they’ve been residents of Columbia, and they have embraced their new home.
In the past, proceeds from events organized by residents have supported the St. John’s benevolent fund as well as local organizations such as Hands Across the Street; the Alzheimer’s Association; the Columbia
Public Library and Bookmobile; and children’s programs of Luthercare, the parent organization of St. John’s Herr Estate.
Residents participate in the annual Columbia Mardi Gras Halloween Parade, are active with local churches and volunteer with Columbia organizations.
Programs are held throughout the year at St. John’s that are open to the public, including OWLs (Older Wiser Learners), an initiative that invites older adults to continue their intellectual growth with opportunities to hear from and engage with guest speakers who present informative topics in a welcoming environment.

The next session will be held on Monday, May 19, and will feature Millersville University assistant professor of biology, Chris Hardy, who will discuss forensic botany.
