Pleasant View will host a day of food, fun and friendship

“For 70 years, Pleasant View has not just been a retirement community, but has been a part of the greater Manheim community,” said Kailah Buckwalter, marketing specialist. “What better way to celebrate that special relationship than a day of fun where all generations can be together and enjoy various activities and learn about different organizations in the community?”

That’s the goal of the annual Community Day. The celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the

Pleasant View Communities campus, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

The festivities will include food, fun and activities for people of all ages.

The auxiliary at Pleasant View will host a chicken barbecue, featuring meals from Peters’ BBQ.

“Our auxiliary historian notes Peters’ BBQ was an annual feature of the Community Day event starting in the 1990s,” said Pam Hoffman, auxiliary president.

“The Peters’ family connection to Pleasant View was through family members who were residents.”

Preorders for meals are due Wednesday, May 7. Each meal

will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter, a whoopie pie and water. Order forms may be obtained at various locations throughout the campus, including the main entrance, as well as online at https://pleasant-view -communities.square.site.

“Pre-event meal orders are strongly encouraged as there will be a limited number of meals and half-chickens available for purchase during Community Day,” Hoffman said. “Pick up a meal or share a table with family and friends in the square. Look for volunteers wearing chicken hats in the Pleasant View Communities Town Square.”

On Friday, May 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community invites the public to a special curbside meal pickup event. The fundraising initiative will be held at LCBC - Manheim Campus,

2392 Mount Joy Road, and all proceeds will directly support the residents of Mt. Hope.

The meal, provided by Peters’ BBQ, will feature a menu of grilled pork barbecue served on a soft roll, homemade baked macaroni and cheese, savory baked beans with bacon, Mt. Hope’s signature

As people travel south of Manheim on Route 72, they may notice a symbol of faith towering over a cemetery.

In 1961, a Young Men’s Community Cross Committee formed, possibly composed of members of the men’s Bible classes from Manheim churches, with a goal of erecting a permanent, lighted cross in Fairview Cemetery, 98 W. Sun Hill Road, Manheim. They worked to complete their mission, building a 16-by-8-foot

cross to have it ready for the Easter sunrise service in 1962.

Unfortunately, after many years, the cross stopped lighting up. While no one knows for sure when or why it stopped, one thing is certain: It will soon light up again.

Pat McGeehan, the caretaker of Fairview Cemetery, has been collaborating with several individuals to secure funding for the restoration of the cross and the installation of LED bulbs.

“In 2022, my husband, Wes Geib, received an email from

Camping options available

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) encourages members of the public to experience the great outdoors through camping in 2025. Although some federally operated campgrounds are closed this season due to staffing shortages, plenty of campsites across the state are open for reservations.

the society could not sponsor the repair, but Wes offered to help Pat with getting funds for the project,” Audrey recalled. “Pat said he would get an updated estimate.”

The estimated cost of the project is $5,400.

The Geibs are officers with the historical society. In the fall of 2024, Wes received a phone call from McGeehan, asking if the historical society would be interested in a donation or sponsorship to repair the cross.

“The cross will be rewired, and the electrician will install LED lights,” Audrey said. “The electrician will also have it wired for timed lighting.”

PCOA’s 220 independently owned campgrounds offer more than 37,000 campsites featuring amenities and outdoor activities. The campgrounds have a variety of camping options, including tent sites, big rig friendly campsites, and unique outdoor lodging units. Many have weekday availability and offer lower rates during non-peak times. A full list of PCOA parks is available at www .pacamping.com, where people may also request a free copy of the printed “Pennsylvania Campground Directory.” For information about outdoor lodging options, visit www.pa

outdoorlodging.com. In addition, Pennsylvania’s public lands provide outdoor recreation with no day-use entrance fees. Visitors may access 124 state parks and 2.2 million acres of state forests open in their entirety. Pennsylvania is home to several national parks and historical sites managed by the National Park Service, all of which remain open with reduced staffing.

The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association is a trade association dedicated to representing the interests of campground owners throughout Pennsylvania. PCOA provides resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy to help its members succeed in the outdoor hospitality industry. Through initiatives like RV shows, the PCOA promotes camping as a way to experience the beauty of Pennsylvania and encourages RV enthusiasts to explore the state’s many independent campgrounds.

Kopp Electric is performing the renovations, and the project has been well-received by the community, Audrey said, noting that Wes has spread the word for support through phone calls and postings on social media.

“Phone calls have been made to many of the descendants of the men who built the original cross, and those friends are helping to spread the word,” she shared.

While the cross itself dates to the early 1960s, the grounds have a long history.

The Manheim Fairview Cemetery Association was established in 1874. “This cemetery was the site of community Easter dawn services since 1933,” Audrey said.

The repair work is in the final stages, and the cross should be lit very soon, she noted. It will provide not just a beacon alongside the road, but also a tribute to the past.

“This lit cross was a very special memory for the town of Manheim,” Audrey said, “and many people we talk with would love to see it lit again.”

Support is needed to fund the upkeep of the cross. For more information, contact Wes Geib through Facebook.

YOU TASTE IT

This event is part of Mt. Hope’s celebration of its 56th anniversary and reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to serving seniors and individuals with disabilities, many of whom live on limited or fixed incomes. Located in Rapho Township, Manheim, Mt. Hope is home to 50 residents who rely on the facility for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services.

“Most of our residents do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network to cover the cost of their care,” explained Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “There is an average gap of about $200 a day per resident between the state Medicaid reimbursement rate and the actual cost of care for our residents on this state assistance.”

Additionally, Mt. Hope is unique, Wilson said, because there is no initial fee to be paid upfront upon entering

“Last year, Mt. Hope alone covered approximately $1.7 million of unreimbursed care costs or charitable care,” she noted. “This Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb the cost of benevolent care without searching for other alternatives to offset rising costs and continuing with creative fundraising initiatives.”

The drive-through meal not only provides a way to support the Mt. Hope residents, but also ensures Mt. Hope remains a relevant and inviting care option for many in need in the community. Mt. Hope is known not only for its quality clinical care but also for its vibrant activity calendar.

A special event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, Wilson remarked, when the community will hold an adult prom.

“Our residents dress up in their finest attire,” she said.

“We will have a DJ playing live music; dancing; and a charcuterie board of cheese, crackers, grapes and cookies will be served. It’s almost as if the second-floor resident lounge is decorated back in time for their prom night.”

Wilson also wishes to thank the community for helping contribute to Mt. Hope in many ways throughout the year.

“Your contributions help us to continue to shine God’s light,” she said. “We’re so grateful for generous gifts that bless Mt. Hope. Thank you for caring about our residents and their home.”

Preorders for the barbecue meal will be accepted through Saturday, May 10. While additional meals may be available on the day of the event, they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Payment is due at pickup and can be made via cash or check (payable to Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community), which should be dropped into a designated collection box.

SCORE recognizes small business owners, mentors

To celebrate Lancaster and Lebanon counties’ innovative small business communities, SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon hosted its 18th annual small business awards luncheon on April 17 at The Ware Center at Millersville University in downtown Lancaster. The event recognized outstanding small businesses, partners and mentors for their accomplishments contributing to Lancaster’s and Lebanon’s economy.

Winners included the Arthur Reeher Company, Chellas Arepa Kitchen, Perfect Pots, the WEPA Empowerment Center and White Rose Family Dental. The event included a buffet lunch and featured presentations from each of the winners.

When the Arthur Reeher Company, a family-owned independent insurance adjusting firm, asked manager Brian Miller to assume ownership of the 65-year-old business, Miller was excited but also nervous, as he had no prior experience in such a venture. Being a Marine, he knew he didn’t want to face the challenge alone, so he reached out to SCORE and was connected to Jerry Glenn as a mentor. With Glenn’s mentorship, Miller brought his wife, Stacia, aboard, making the company a profitable family-owned business once again.

Chellas Arepa Kitchen, founded by Luis Quiroz to share his Peruvian heritage, grew from a food truck into a nationally recognized restaurant, ranking No. 5 on Yelp’s “Top Places to Eat in the Country” and featured in premier publications like Food & Wine Magazine.

Named after Quiroz’s grandmother, Chellas became a Lancaster culinary staple. With years of guidance from SCORE mentor Lou Davenport, Quiroz secured financing for his first location and recently expanded to a second spot on North Queen Street, fulfilling his dream of a brick-and-mortar restaurant while honoring his roots.

Perfect Pots, a thriving garden center and seasonal planting service in Strasburg, began in Laura Clegg’s garage as a hobby-turned-business. As demand grew, she embraced entrepreneurship, expanding Perfect Pots into a premier gardening destination in southeastern Pennsylvania. During a rapid growth phase, SCORE mentors Eric Parker and Margot

Hoerner provided crucial human resources (HR) guidance, allowing Clegg to focus on the big picture. Now with multiple locations, including Kitchen Kettle Village and Central Market Flowers in Lancaster, her journey continues to flourish.

In 2021, Rafael and Maribel Torres founded the WEPA Empowerment Center to address critical needs in Lebanon, focusing on education and workforce development. With guidance from SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon and mentor Kevin St. Cyr, they helped individuals pursue employment opportunities and long-term self-sufficiency. Securing $5 million in funding, they renovated a building at 9 S. Ninth St., now home to classrooms and learning spaces for adult education and workforce initiatives. Their mission continues to empower generations to come.

Kaushal Kapadia’s journey to dentistry began in his childhood in India, inspired by an orthodontist who treated his “crooked smile”

with kindness. Impressed by the orthodontist, he vowed to become a dentist with that same philosophy of ultimate kind patient care. He immigrated to the USA in 2007 and attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, graduating with top honors and volunteering in underserved communities in and around Philadelphia. In 2022, he opened White Rose Family Dental, crediting SCORE mentor Gary Wojcik for his success.

SCORE is the largest notfor-profit organization in the

United States serving small businesses. The SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon chapter was founded in 1965, serving Lancaster County and expanding to Lebanon County in 2015. SCORE has helped more than 17 million entrepreneurs start, grow or successfully exit a business. For more information, visit www.score.org/ lancaster-lebanon.

brought to life by the Choo Choo Barn staff. The project will be permanently added to the display. The top three winners will receive monetary prizes and also receive four complimentary tickets to the Choo Choo Barn.

The tourist attraction, located at 226 Gap Road, Strasburg, has announced the first Choo Choo Barn Student Design Challenge. Students have the chance to see their original, animated display become part of the Choo Choo Barn model train layout and win prizes.

The deadline to submit entries is Sunday, June 1. Students interested in participating should submit their detailed sketches, mechanical movement plans, and a written explanation of their animation to Rae Vanni at rae@choochoo barn.com.

Russell stated that the challenge allows students to showcase their creativity and engineering skills “to explore mechanical design, engineering, and animation principles.”

The animation projects will be judged on creativity and originality, functionality and engineering feasibility, accuracy of scale and clarity of drawings, and quality of explanation.

We are very interested in what people are saying and what they would do to make our layout better.”

Russell has already received positive feedback. “It’s going over much better than I thought because this is something the kids really like,” he said. “Besides the fact there is a prize at the end, I think the money is second nature. I think

Walk on universally accessible trail planned

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, in collaboration with Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light (PA IPL), will offer a casual, family-friendly outing on the Welsh Mountain Preserve’s universally accessible trail from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. The organizations are offering this activity in support of PA IPL’s 2025 Bike & Hike challenge theme, “Caring for Every Body,” which highlights the intersections of climate justice and disability justice. Participants will consider how outdoor opportunities are too often inaccessible to community members because of the limitations built into a trail or an activity’s design.

Welsh Mountain serves as the headwaters for the Pequea Creek and Conestoga River, both

of which empty into the Susquehanna River. Its fully forested, half-mile accessible trail includes seasonal blooms of wild azaleas, low-bush blueberries, and wildflowers, as well as large flushes of mushrooms.

The trail is suitable for those using wheelchairs, mobility devices, and strollers, and parkingincluding handicapped-accessible parking - is available near the trailhead. Those planning to participate should bring a reflective vest if they have one, as hunters may be in the preserve; vests will be provided for those without them.

The activity is free of charge. Registration is required at https:// tinyurl.com/Register WelshMountain. For more details, email jane druce@gmail.com.
