Tim leads the team at Carpenter Oak Cornwall, a new and innovative local company with a well-earned reputation behind them. Offering a bespoke design service, oak frame manufacture, glazing and project management service, progress on a small build like Tim’s can be swift. Carpenter Oak Cornwall has an in-house frame designer, Tom Jubb, who works with clients to design a frame to fit their own brief, however Tim did the design himself for his extension. Tim also did the carpentry, glazing and blockwork, as well as all his own kitchen fitting, plastering, roofing and plumbing, to keep the costs down. “For clients in Cornwall I can use my experience of building to project manage our jobs – we are able to get builders we have a relationship with to price for projects that use our frames, so clients know the whole project is being managed,” explains Tim. “Tim’s aim was to ‘walk his talk’ and showcase just what can be done on a modest budget. This frame demonstrates just how versatile oak frame construction can be,” adds Tom. To save costs Tim kept the design simple. Using the same footprint as the original lean-to but increasing the pitch of the roof enabled him to increase the volume of space, and installing Velux windows maximised the natural light entering the new kitchen. “It was a dark square before and didn’t

get any natural daylight. Now the early morning sun comes through the Velux windows and hits the back wall of the kitchen – it’s the most peaceful space. Light floods in all morning until about three in the afternoon, it’s just lovely,” says Katie. Even the children love the new space, particularly the wide oak sills at the back of the worktop where they sit to watch Katie cooking. “The kids love playing on the kitchen steps and sitting on the oak along the bottom of the window – it is going to develop a lovely patina where they have been sitting!” The green oak frame was produced in the Carpenter Oak Cornwall workshop in Lelant, while the ground works were being carried out on site. The frame was then erected on site and the project was completed on time and within budget in just two months. “When we set up Carpenter Oak Cornwall we had a vision that clients would be able to deal directly with the carpenters and designers who actually create and build these spaces”, says Carpenter Oak Director Stuart Voaden. “And we love the fact that Tim has now built one for his own family and is now even better placed to pass his experience on to others.”
