Spring energy savings

Take advantage of mild spring temperatures this year by implementing some of the following energy-saving strategies in your home.

Service your HVAC system. The start of spring is a great time to service your air conditioner. Scheduling a professional HVAC service this spring will help ensure your cooling system runs efficiently when it’s needed in the summer. You can get started with some basic maintenance in the meantime.

Replaceairfiltersregularly(left);cleardebrisaroundoutdoorunits (center);andensuresufficientclearanceforairregisters(right).

Changeairfilters . Replace the air filters in your HVAC system to improve airflow and help your system run smoothly.

Your HVAC filter gradually collects dust, pollen, and other particles, decreasing airflow. Filters should ideally be replaced every one to three months, depending on usage and filter type. Choose the correct size and rating for your system to ensure sufficient airflow and efficiency.

Inspecttheoutdoorcondensingunit Leaves, dirt, and other debris may have accumulated around the outdoor condensing unit over the fall and winter. Clean the unit by gently spraying it with a garden hose. The area around the unit should also remain clear for optimal airflow. Rake away leaves, pine needles, and other debris. Trim any nearby vegetation to maintain at least 12 to 24 inches of clearance on all sides.

Checkandcleanyourairregisters . Dust and other debris can accumulate on supply and return registers, blocking airflow. Use a brush and vacuum to remove any buildup. Make sure all vents are open and unobstructed by furniture or curtains. Keep at least 80% of your supply registers open to prevent a return/supply imbalance and/or undue strain on the system.

Weatherize your home to save additional energy and further improve the comfort of your home. Reducing the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is a cost-effective way to cut heating and cooling costs, improve durability, increase comfort, and create a healthier indoor environment.

Applyweatherstripandsealaroundwindowsanddoors(left);andseal andinsulateairductsinunconditionedareasliketheattic(right).

Findandsealairleaks . Leaky windows and doors allow hot, humid air to get inside your home. Inspect and seal any gaps around windows and doors with caulk and weatherstripping. Check for insufficient insulation in the attic or gaps around pipes, ductwork, and light fixtures. Seal these leaks with spray foam and top them with additional insulation to reduce unwanted air exchange through the attic floor.

Minimizeenergylossinducts . Poorly sealed and uninsulated air ducts will also contribute to higher energy bills. Air ducts should be sealed to prevent any leaks, particularly those in unconditioned areas such as the attic or crawlspace. While some duct repairs may be easily performed by a homeowner, a qualified professional may be needed to seal and insulate ducts with appropriate sealing materials.

Adjust your thermostat. Save additional money on your energy bill by adjusting your thermostat and/or using a programmable or smart thermostat.

Energysavingsfromthermostatchanges.

Dialbackyourthermostat : You can save up to 10% a year on heating and cooling by turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. You can also open your windows to allow fresh air to circulate through your home and/or run a ceiling fan to make a room feel cooler.

Programyourthermostat : Temperature adjustments can also be set with programmable or smart thermostats. Aligning comfortable temperatures with your schedule (e.g., waking, returning home) can save even more on your cooling bills.

Issue 15 | April 2024 3 ENERGY NEWS TIPS & TOOLS

phase farm power

Larger electric motors are necessary as farms become larger and more mechanized. Three-phase electrical power should be considered on your farm, for this reason, especially if you have any plans for renovation and/or expansion. Decisions regarding single- or three-phase power are important for developing and implementing effective energy strategies on your farm to cope with rising energy prices. This article will explore opportunities and challenges associated with three-phase power.

Thewaveformofsingle-phasepower(left);andthree-phasepowerwith threedistinctwavecyclesbeing120degreesapart(right).

Single-phase power is a two-wire alternating current (AC) circuit with one power wire (phase wire) and one neutral wire. Single phase power is commonly used in residential homes and small businesses as it is suitable for lighting and heating loads. Single-phase power is not, however, ideal for large electric motors. Three-phase power, on the other hand, is a three-wire AC circuit with each phase AC signal being 120 degrees apart. Three-phase power has three power wires (each 120 degrees apart) and may include a fourth neutral wire depending on configuration. Three-phase power is commonly used in commercial and industrial facilities as it efficiently accommodates higher electric loads and motors.

Voltage may fluctuate with single-phase power, leading to inconsistent power delivery. Three-phase power, on the other hand, can deliver power at a steady, constant rate. As such, there is little or no voltage flicker with three-phase power as a motor starts. Three-phase power is often more efficient than single-phase power, transmitting three times as much power with only one additional wire. For these reasons, three-phase power is well-suited for operation of heavy-duty agricultural equipment, including irrigation pumps, grain dryers, and balers. Three-phase motors also have longer useful lives than singlephase motors, and are available in a larger range of horsepower sizes.

Three-phase motors usually cost considerably less (20 to 50 percent less) than comparable single-phase motors. With that said, three-phase power could cost more depending on your local utility company and electricity supplier. In most cases, you will be charged a commercial rate (rather than residential rate), but the benefits of three-phase power could still offset the higher cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) or demand charge per kilowatt (kW). You may also be able to negotiate lower rates with your utility company when installing three-phase power. While single-phase motors could continue to operate on one leg of three-phase power, the benefits of that three-phase service would not be fully realized.

Comparativestudyofpricesofsingle-andthree-phasefour-polemotors fordifferentpowers(Coutinhoetal.,2023).

Check with your local utility company to determine if threephase power is available on your farm and/or get an estimate of the cost to provide that service to your farm. If three-phase power is unavailable on your farm, then a three-phase motor could still be operated on single-phase power using a phase converter. However, phase converters can be relatively costly to install and operate.

Aphaseconverterproducesthree-phaseelectricalpowerfromasinglephasepowersource,allowingtheoperationofthree-phaseequipment.

In summary, three-phase power can provide greater capacity and efficiency for high-power applications on your farm, while single-phase systems are relatively simple and more suitable for lower-power end users.

A floating solar array

The largest floating solar array in North America is located at the Canoe Brook reservoir in Short Hills, NJ. Consisting of 16,510 solar panels, the 8.9-megawatt (MW) array covers 17 acres. The clean power generated is enough to power 1,400 homes annually and provides approximately 95% of the power needs for New Jersey American Water’s Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant. The Canoe Brook solar facility was placed into full commercial operation in January 2023.

Floating solar arrays use innovative racking systems to enable the solar panels to float. The floating structures themselves are composed of empty plastic floats that are joined together to form substantial pontoons that can support the solar array. The floats are constructed using a variety of materials and configurations depending on the environmental circumstances of where they’re installed, the quality of physical resources, and the site design and mobility among other factors.

Built mostly on man-made lakes or reservoirs, where tides and saltwater will not impact the panels, floating solar projects support the production of clean energy on beneficial use space. This innovative approach to clean energy production is becoming increasingly important in densely populated areas, like New Jersey, where significant land use hurdles are faced in accommodating large-scale solar installations.

The solar power that’s generated by the Canoe Brook project is equal to removing 8,121 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere compared to traditional power sources. Floating solar panels, like the Canoe Brook project, can also help reduce evaporation, while protecting the water resource and providing related environmental benefits.

The Canoe Brook solar facility is owned and operated by NJR Clean Energy Ventures (CEV), a renewable energy subsidiary of New Jersey Resources. Canoe Brook is the second floating solar project in CEV’s portfolio, with their first floating solar project located in Sayreville, NJ. The 4.4 MW Sayreville project was placed into commercial operation in 2020, powering 100% of Sayreville’s water treatment plant.
