UMD’s agrisolar initiatives

University of Maryland (UMD) researchers participated inaninsightfulpanelattherecentAgrisolarConference in Annapolis, MD. Agrisolar integrates solar power generation with agriculture. Key initiatives addressed thechallengesandbenefitsofagrisolar,including:

• conducting participatory research to develop a clear and consistent definition of agrivoltaics, improving stakeholder communication, consolidating research efforts, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and increasingimplementationefficiency;

• pioneeringappliedresearchintheco-locationofsolar generation and agricultural production at UMD researchfacilities, which serveaseducationalcenters supporting training and capacity building for interestedstakeholdersandcommunities;

• investigating utility-scale solar development on ag lands to address concerns about solar leasing, farmer compensation,andsitedecommissioning;and

• providinganobjectiveanalysisofcurrentutility-scale solarprojectsinMaryland,focusingonlandallocation

Virtual power plants

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of decentralized, distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, and electric vehicles that are integrated and managed collectively to provide power to the grid. Unlike traditional power plants, VPPs do not have a central physical facility. Instead, they use advanced software to coordinate and optimize the performance of these diverseenergysources.

VPP is a cloud-based system that uses software to integrate and manage distributed energy resources (Mishra, 2022).

VPPs offer several benefits. By balancing supply and demandinreal-time,VPPshelpmaintaingridstability andpreventoutages.Theyfacilitatetheintegrationof renewable energy sources, making the grid cleaner and more efficient. VPPs can also reduce the need for expensive ‘peaker’ plants by providing power during peak demand periods. They can quickly respond to changes in energy demand, offering services like frequencyregulationandloadfollowing.Overall,VPPs represent a significant step towards a more resilient andsustainableenergysystem.

Recent notable virtual power plant actions (Lips, 2024).

The DRIVE Act requires utilities to submit V2G charging plans to the MD PSC by April 2025 and VPP plans by July 2025, while setting a September 2028 deadline for Maryland utilities to implement time-of-use rates (Maryland General Assembly, 2024).

Maryland is implementing VPPs through several legislative and pilot initiatives. The state passed the Distributed Renewable Integration and Vehicle Electrification (DRIVE) Act in April 2024, which mandates utilities to develop VPP plans by July 2025. This legislation requires utilities to create pilot programsthatcompensateownersandaggregatorsof distributed energy resources (DERs) for providing gridsupportservices.

These initiatives aim to enhance Maryland’s energy resilience, support renewable energy integration, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The DRIVE Act includes provisions for bidirectional EV charging, allowing electric vehicles to both draw power from and supply power back to the grid. Utilities are required to implement pilot programs that pay EV owners for contributing to grid reliability through VPP networks. This act also mandates the implementation of time-of-use rates by September 2028, encouraging EV charging during off-peak hours toreducegridstrain.

Vehicle-to-grid technology

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology is gaining global traction, with its adoption rates varying by region. Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands are leading, thanks to supportive policies and incentives. Japan is a pioneer, investing heavily in V2G to and enhance grid stability and integrate renewable energy. In the U.S., California and Maryland are at the forefront, with legislativesupportandpilotprograms.

The V2G market is projected to exceed $15 billion by 2031. Automakers like Nissan, Renault, and Toyota are developing V2G-compatible models, highlighting the technology’s promising future. Despite being in early stages, V2G’s potential to improve grid stability, supportrenewableenergy,andoffereconomicbenefits

V2G Mechanism: V2G technology is a form of bidirectional charging that allows electric vehicles (EVs) to both draw electricity from the grid and send electricity back to it. Overall, V2G technology offers a promising way to enhance the efficiency and reliability oftheelectricgridwhileprovidingeconomicbenefitsto EV owners. This system enables EVs to act as mobile energystorageunits,providingseveralbenefits:

Duringpeakdemandperiods,EVscansupplyelectricity backtothegrid,helpingtobalancesupplyanddemand andreducetheriskofblackouts.EVownerscancharge their vehicles during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower and sell the stored energy back to the gridduringpeakhourswhenratesarehigher.

V2Gcanhelpintegratemorerenewableenergysources intothegridbystoringexcessenergygeneratedduring periodsoflowdemandandreleasingitwhenneeded.In emergenciesorpoweroutages,EVscanprovidebackup powertohomesorcriticalinfrastructure.

Maryland Initiatives: Maryland is the first state to passV2GlegislationthroughtheDistributedRenewable Integration and Vehicle Electrification (DRIVE) Act. This act mandates utilities to develop interconnection processes for bidirectional chargers, facilitating V2G integration.

Toyota and Pepco are also collaborating to research V2G using the Toyota bZ4X EV, focusing on bidirectional power flow, where EVs can both charge andsupplypowerbacktothegrid.

Pepcoisinstalling250EVchargersacrossMontgomery and Prince George’s Counties, supporting Maryland’s goalofhaving300,000EVsontheroadby2025.These initiatives underscore Maryland’s commitment to leveraging V2G technology for a more sustainable and resilientenergyfuture.

Project Catherine solar

Chaberton Energy, a Maryland-based solar developer, and Pivot Energy, a national renewable energy owner and operator, has undertaken an innovative solar projectinHowardCounty.ProjectCatherine,locatedon a 19-acre site at St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church’s property in Cooksville, MD, integrates three distinct solarinitiatives:

• Community Solar:Suppliesenergytolocalresidents andbusinessesthroughasubscriptionmodel.

• Power Purchase Agreement:Providesenergyto LoyolaUniversityMaryland.

• On-site Usage:Offsetsthechurch’selectricity consumption.

The project was developed with significant community input,ensuringminimalimpactonthechurch’sathletic fields and providing financial benefits through solar landleasepayments.

ProjectCatherinewillgenerate4.3megawattsofdirect current (MWdc), enough to power approximately 750 homes. Community solar subscribers will access 3.4 MWdc, Loyola University will receive 750 kilowatts (kWdc)underarenewableenergypurchaseagreement, and the remaining energy will offset the church’s onsiteload.

ProjectCatherinewillbenefitlocalcommunitiesbeyond providing access to clean energy savings. Pivot has donated to the Power52 Foundation, which supports workforce development for at-risk individuals in Baltimore, while Chaberton has contributed to the Bright Minds Foundation and the Community Ecology Institute, supporting public education and community developmentinHowardCounty.

Project Catherine and additional solar projects in the Pivot-Chaberton portfolio will bring clean energy and savings to thousands of households, contributing to Maryland’s goal of achieving 50% renewable energy productionby2030.
