Funny how memories come back to us. I just came from a first read-through of the play you’re about to see. These first read-throughs are wonderful and fragile events — the theatrical equivalent of first days of school, complete with all the attendant nerves, hopes and sharpened pencils. And I sat down with full expectation to be placed back in my earlier days’ experience of crushing on Peter Reigert as Sam, the pickle man. And while I promise you that Andrew Benator will do you one better in the role, that isn’t where the read-through took me. Instead, it took me with full force to my Grandma Rose’s living room. My Grandma Rose who had the most juicy laugh and joy in life of anyone I knew. My Grandma Rose, whose closet was a wonderland of shoes and purses and jewelry that were made to be tried on by her granddaughter, according to her. My Grandma Rose who spent time with her grandchildren one at a time so we could each know the rare delight of being the singular apple of this wondrous being’s eye — each of us believing fully that we were her favorite. Crossing Delancey just gave her back to me for a little while. So much of this Alliance season on the road was crafted to take us on new adventures, but so far it’s also been an amazing opportunity to revisit memories. Back to memories of seeing stunningly realized classics at the home of Georgia Shakespeare. Back to memories of avid audiences meeting wide open work at the home of Jewish Theatre of the South. Back to memories of Grandma Rose, who while Presbyterian by practice, was truly my bubbe by nature. Funny, these memories. Welcome. Whether it’s welcome back or welcome for the first time — welcome to a place that is made richer by everything you bring to the space, be it a memory of a play, a bubbe, or a pickle man. We’re glad you’re here.

A bubbie to look out for you, help you stay connected to your heritage. One who hugs you too much, feeds you too much and loves you unconditionally. The Yiddish name for grandmother is “bubbe.” In the Jewish tradition, one’s grandma has affectionately been called bubbie (or bubbe or bubby). “Bubbie only wants the best for you,” says Toronto-based director Leora Morris, 33. “But our Bubbie doesn’t just want to tell you what’s best, she also wants you to figure it for yourself.” The Alliance’s Woodruff Arts Center space is in the midst of a multimillion-dollar redo this season, as you may know, so shows are being staged nomadically at venues that make sense. So here we are at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta. Susan Sandler’s romantic comedy fits the MJCCA, a popular spot with greater Atlanta’s Jewish community. They, among other audiences, should delight in Crossing Delancey’s use of Yiddish words and phrases. (Stop hocking me a chineick, for example, translates to “stop banging a teapot at me,” a colorful way to say “stop annoying me”). The rom-com thrives on the deep bond between a determined Bubbie and her devoted granddaughter, Isabelle “Izzy” Grossman, who’s in her late 20s. And single. The piece reminds young people that it’s important to have older people in their lives, says director Leora Morris, and vice versa. The 1985 stage play became a 1988 movie with Amy Irving as Izzy and the late Reizl Bozyk as Bubbie. This wasn’t a world with cellphones and Match.com. It was still feasible that a Jewish grandmother might enlist a marriage-broker friend to help her granddaughter find Mr. Right. The matchmaker, named Hannah, thinks a pickle merchant named Sam, a standup 10 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
guy who works hard to avoid smelling like pickle juice, is a fine mate for Izzy. Izzy is more interested in a handsome author. She doesn’t buy the whole arranged-marriage idea but gets pushback from Hannah, who argues that Izzy must concentrate on finding a good and kind man. Bubbie, who’s in her 80s, came to the United States as a girl and never left

Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Izzy lives uptown, “with bars on the windows like a prison,” Bubbie moans. “Someone should thinking.” Morris thinks of the ’80s as a moment in New York City when social mobility shifted “in a revolutionary way.” Earlier Jewish immigrants were largely Yiddish-speaking tailors and bakers who found a tight-knit world in the Lower East Side. By the 1970s and ’80s, these immigrants and their offspring also had become part of the Upper West Side’s intelligentsia. Delancey speaks to what it might have felt like then, Morris says, to be a contemporary Jewish woman uptown when your roots and customs were still downtown. Morris, a graduate of the Yale School of Drama’s M.F.A. directing program, spent last season as the Alliance’s Yale Directing Fellow. Artistic Director Susan V. Booth had long 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
admired Crossing Delancey, asked Morris to read it, then learned the young director felt a personal connection. As a Jewish woman who has wrestled with career and commitment, Morris could relate. She believes theatergoers today will connect with the romantic comedy as well, through the humanity of the characters. “The matchmaker may have become Match. com or JDate,” she says, “but the central questions haven’t changed much. The very human drama of figuring out who to love and how to identify who you love is not going away.” A

Onstage Again Daniel Thomas May is a popular and versatile actor, but you haven’t seen him on a metro stage since he played Dr. Givings in Synchronicity Theatre’s 2015 telling of In the Next Room, or the vibrator play. He sees Crossing Delancey as the right vehicle at the right moment, playing Tyler Moss, an author with whom the leading lady is infatuated. “Why me for this role?” he asks. “Maybe because I have a good range. I’ve done the romantic lead, and I’ve done the cad. I’m fortunate to be able to do either, and I can have fun with both.” May’s face is familiar to Alliance audiences (many Christmas Carols among other roles). He was a longtime member of Georgia Shakespeare’s repertory company and has twice played Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire. Creative Loafing voted him Atlanta’s best actor several times, and he’s a six-time nominee for Atlanta theater’s Suzi Bass awards. Twice he’s been in the group of actors to win best ensemble. May has been focusing on being a dad of late, as well as film and TV work, which often requires less of a time commitment than stage work does. He and wife Rachel May,
co-founder and producing artistic director of Atlanta’s Synchronicity, have a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins. On TV, May, who was raised in Snellville, has had roles in “Sleepy Hollow,” “Nashville” and “Drop Dead Diva.” In 2012, he played a protective dad named Allen on AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” returning four years later for a flashback scene. “‘The Walking Dead’ was a great experience because it was my first real opportunity in TV to work as part of an ensemble,” May says. More often he’s on set for a day or two, as he was with “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story,” a TV movie in which he played a lawyer. May shot the Tom Cruise movie now called American Made two years ago, playing “CIA Man.” It came out in late September. And he’s a preacher’s son in “Lore,” a creepy Amazon series that starts streaming in mid-October. Still, theater is his first love. “The process and presentation of stage work, of being able to do a story from beginning to end during the course of one evening,” he says, “that’s what’s in my blood, and I’m always going to come back to it.” — Julie Bookman
The Lower East Side of Manhattan
M
anhattan’s Lower East Side was built on a piece of Manhattan Island into the East River. In the 19th century, the area’s single-family homes were abandoned for more elegant homes as the city expanded north. Because of the bump into the river, the Lower East Side was an inefficient commercial hub slightly disconnected from the island’s North/ South vertical arteries. The result was the creation of street after street of tenement housing, which became home to waves of immigrants.

Delancey Street, the commercial hub of the neighborhood, connects to both Williamsburg in Brooklyn to the east and the commercial buildings of SoHo to the west. It’s wide and dangerous to cross on foot. From the 1920s to the 1950s, it was a thriving business district that, by 1980, had become home to shops serving a dwindling but still vibrant Jewish community. In American theater, the Lower East Side often functions as a launching pad or point of departure. In the 1980s, 1.6 million Jewish residents of New York had spread

out throughout the city helping to define New York culture for the rest of the country. In the play, the neighborhood symbolizes unique American-Jewish traditions formed from the combination of many Jewish Ashkenazi traditions blending together in close geographic proximity. From lunches at the deli, pushcarts, pastrami and rye, pickles, the infiltration of Yiddishkeit into the essential New York vernacular, the Marx Brothers and the music of George and Ira Gershwin, the Lower East Side’s distinct culture came to define New York. As a director, she has worked at such theaters as the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul and Emory universities. She is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field, and is a trustee of Denison University. synopsis Setting: New York in the mid 1980s; the Upper West Side and the Lower East Side Isabelle (Izzy) Grossman is a modern woman who lives and works in New York’s Upper West Side. She feeds her literary ambition by working in a neighborhood bookshop. Every weekend she travels to visit her grandmother (Bubbie) on the Lower East Side, a 45-minute subway ride and a world away. Bubbie worries that Izzy needs help finding happiness, specifically a life partner, and asks Hannah, the neighborhood matchmaker, to help Izzy out. Working together, Bubbie and the Matchmaker introduce Izzy to Sam, the neighborhood pickle vendor. But will Izzy’s interest in writer and literary star Tyler Moss thwart her grandmother’s plans?

The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fundsaving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers.
