CHARLOTTE’S OWN TAYLOR BRICE FINDING SUCCESS EARLY IN LIFE

Admittedly, Taylor Brice had never heard of Tina Turner or knew any of her songs when she was cast in the national touring company of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. But seeing how she was just nine years old at the time, listening to artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, it’s not that surprising.

In fact, the youngster wasn’t even really trying to audition for the show about the legendary singer.

“I really auditioned for The Lion King musical and the lady who was doing that told me I was perfect for Tina,” the now 10-year-old said. “I didn’t even know that show was on Broadway and had no idea she existed. They called me for an audition, and I got it.”

Brice has always loved music and performed in school and at church, but watching shows like “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent” made her

want to pursue singing more seriously.

“Watching kids on those shows made me feel like I could do that too,” she said. “I would love to do a show like that one day, absolutely.”

GETTING TO KNOW TINA

Once cast, Brice started to learn as much as she could about the singer known for such hits as “Private Dancer” and “What’s Love Got to Do With it.”

“My mom would look up some YouTube videos for me and our teachers at the show would explain who she is to us,” Brice said.

In the show, Brice does triple-duty, playing Young Anna-Mae Bullock (Turner’s real name), Young Craig Turner and Young Alline. As the young Bullock, the actress shows Turner’s early life in Nutbush, Tennessee, and her developing passion for music.

“What I enjoy about doing this is showing everyone that I have talent, and I can perform on stage without being scared,” she said. “I want people to know that I can sing and act.”

Before going on stage each night, Brice has a routine that includes steaming her voice and warming up.

GAMES AND SCHOOLWORK

Brice is just one of two kids in the production, alternating performances in her roles with Natalia Nappo. The two often hang out together and they have a wrangler who helps them while at the different theaters.

When not on stage, the kids can watch the show through a monitor but mostly spend time in their dressing rooms playing games or doing schoolwork.

In addition to steaming her voice and warming up, Brice also prays before going on stage. She feels that helps her.

The adult cast members have really enjoyed getting to know the charming young lady and speak glowingly about her. Brice tries to learn from them and shares that they are all very friendly and talented.

“They treat me like I’m their little sister,” she said. “They buy me stuff and take me places. They are my friends even though they are adults.”

One of Brice’s favorite things to do in the different cities the tour stops in is to explore different sites and the things each location is known for, and her mom always prepares some ideas ahead of time to make the most of the time.

“We’ve been to the beach a lot, and we’re in Hawaii right now, so I am really enjoying it here,” she said.

Taylor Brice

BACK IN HER HOMETOWN

But, hailing from Charlotte, Brice is really excited about the tour’s stop at the Belk Theater for five days, and she’s looking forward to seeing lots of friends and family as she performs on the Blumenthal stage for the first time.

“I’m just excited to be back in my hometown,” she said. “I miss my friends and family, but I just miss straight-up Charlotte. My favorite thing that I want to see when I’m home is my bed.”

Now that she hears Turner’s music on a regular basis, Brice officially declares herself a Tina Turner fan.

“My favorite songs are ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Nutbush City Limits,” she said. When the Tina tour comes to an end, Brice hopes to continue on this career path and is hoping to audition for other shows and stay performing for the rest of her life.

“I’m so thrilled to be part of this show,” she said. “Tina has an amazing cast, it’s an amazing show and it’s really the best. I just love it so much.”
