JOSÉ GREGORIO HERNÁNDEZ CISNEROS (Isnotú, estado Trujillo, Estados Unidos de Venezuela, 26 de octubre de 1864-Caracas, Distrito Federal, Estados Unidos de Venezuela, 29 de junio de 1919), fue un médico, científico, profesor y filántropo de profunda vocación religiosa, católico franciscano seglar, reconocido por su solidaridad con los más necesitados.

JOSÉ GREGORIO HERNÁNDEZ CISNEROS (Isnotú, Trujillo state, United States of Venezuela, October 26, 1864-Caracas, Federal District, United States of Venezuela, June 29, 1919), was a doctor, scientist, professor and philanthropist with a deep vocation religious, secular Franciscan Catholic, recognized for his solidarity with those most in need.

Es venerado por hispanohablantes y latinoamericanos. En 1949 la Iglesia católica comenzó proceso de canonización parar designarlo santo. En el año 1986, el papa Juan Pablo II reconoció sus virtudes heroicas y lo declaró «venerable». El proceso se renovó el 18 de enero de 2019, luego de un milagro atribuido a Hernández en San Fernando de Apure, en el que una niña se recuperaría de una herida de bala.

El papa Francisco autorizó la beatificación de José Gregorio Hernández, el 19 de junio de 2020.

He is revered by Spanish and Latin Americans.In 1949 the Catholic Church began the process of canonization to designate him a saint.In 1986, Pope John Paul II recognized his heroic virtues and declared him "venerable". The process was renewed on January 18, 2019, after a miracle attributed to Hernández in San Fernando de Apure, in which a girl would recover from a gunshot wound. Pope Francis authorized the beatification of José Gregorio Hernández, on June 19, 2020.

Being the first of six brothers, the son of Benigno María Hernández Manzaneda and Josefa Antonia Cisneros Mansilla, of Colombian and Canarian descent, respectively. In May 1863, María Isolina was born, who died at 7 months; followed by José Gregorio, then María Isolina del Carmen, in May 1866. In September 1867 María Sofía was born, followed

by César Benigno, in August 1869. The last male, José Benjamín Benigno, was born in September 1870. Finally Josefa Antonia who was born in August 1872.

Por línea materna descendía del cardenal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros (más conocido como Cardenal Cisneros), quien fuera confesor de Isabel la Católica, fundador de la Universidad de Alcalá y gran impulsor de la cultura en su época; y por vía paterna, a través del linaje de un tío bisabuelo, se emparentaba con el Santo Hermano Miguel (Francisco Luis Florencio Febres-Cordero Muñoz), eminente educador y escritor, miembro de la Academia Ecuatoriana de la Lengua, y correspondiente de la Real Academia Española.

On her maternal line descended from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros (better known as Cardinal Cisneros), who was confessor of Isabel la Católica, founder of the University of Alcalá and great promoter of culture in her time; and by paternal way, through the lineage of a great-grandfather uncle, he was related to the Holy Brother Miguel (Francisco Luis Florencio Febres-Cordero Muñoz), eminent educator and writer, member of the Ecuadorian Academy of Language, and correspondent of the Royal Spanish Academy.

Toda su infancia la vivió en su pueblo natal, su madre se dedicaba a labores del hogar y su padre era dueño de un almacén de mercancías secas, víveres y farmacia.

Recibió el sacramento del Bautismo el 30 de enero de 1865 en el antiguo Templo Colonial de Escuque (actual Iglesia Parroquial del Niño Jesús de Escuque), siendo sus padrinos Tomás Lobo y Perpetua Enríquez. El sacramento de la Confirmación se efectuó el 6 de diciembre de 1867, en la iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Betijoque, por el ilustrísimo señor Juan Bonet, Obispo de Mérida.

All her childhood she lived in her hometown, her mother was engaged in household chores and her father owned a dry goods store, groceries and pharmacy. He received the sacrament of Baptism on January 30, 1865 in the old Colonial Temple of Escuque (now the Parish Church of the Child Jesus of Escuque), with his godparents Tomás Lobo and Perpetua Enríquez. The sacrament of Confirmation took place on December 6 of 1867, in the church of San Juan Bautista de Betijoque, by the illustrious Mr. Juan Bonet, Bishop of Mérida.

Su madre, una mujer muy devota, falleció en 1872, cuando él tan solo tenía ocho años pero dejó impregnada en la personalidad del infante una fuerte religiosidad.

Su primer maestro, Pedro Celestino Sánchez quien regentaba una escuela privada en Isnotú, notaría muy pronto las habilidades e inteligencia del pequeño José Gregorio, por lo que señaló a su padre que debía aprovechar las cualidades del niño recomendándole que lo enviara a la capital del país.

Her mother, a very devoted woman, passed away in 1872, when she was only eight years old but left a strong religiosity impregnated in the infant's personality. His first teacher, Pedro Celestino Sánchez, who ran a private school in Isnotú, would soon notice the skills and intelligence of little José Gregorio, so he pointed out to his father that he should take advantage of the child's qualities, recommending that he send him to the country's capital.

At thirteen years of age, José Gregorio expressed to his father his desire to study law, however, his father convinced him to study medicine and he obediently accepted the guidance of his father. From then on, he took medicine as his own vocation, perhaps because he saw in it a way to express his natural inclination to help others. In 1878, when he was barely thirteen and a half years old, he descended from the Trujillo mountains to Caracas, following a long and risky journey: Isnotú, Betijoque, Sabana de Mendoza, Santa Apolonia and La Ceiba on a mule; by the lake to Maracaibo, and then by sea to Curaçao, Puerto Cabello and La Guaira, and by train, from this port, to the capital city.

En 1878, cuando apenas contaba con trece años y medio, bajó de la sierra trujillana hasta Caracas, siguiendo una travesía larga y riesgosa: Isnotú, Betijoque, Sabana de Mendoza, Santa Apolonia y La Ceiba en mula; por el lago hasta Maracaibo, y después por mar a Curazao, Puerto Cabello y La Guaira, y por tren, desde este puerto, a la ciudad capital.

During his stay at this school, the young José Gregorio became friends with the principal and his wife Pepita Perozo de Villegas. According to Dr. Villegas, "José Gregorio was little given to playing with his companions and preferred to spend his free time in the company of books." At a young age he already knew the classics and self-imposed with great discipline obtaining a vast encyclopedic culture.During his years at the Villegas School, José Gregorio always obtained the best grades, won distinctions and awards, and on several occasions the application and good conduct medals. His advance was so much that he became a teacher of arithmetic for the first year students. Between 1878 and 1882 José Gregorio studied in said preparatory school and philosophy, graduating with a Bachelor of Philosophy in that last year.

Cuando ingresó a la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) para iniciar sus estudios de medicina, José Gregorio tenía 17 años.

Según las certificaciones de los estudios universitarios de José Gregorio Hernández (en las que se evaluaban estos aspectos: aplicación, aprovechamiento, buena conducta y asistencia), en casi todas las materias de los seis años de estudio logró la calificación de sobresaliente; fue el estudiante más destacado en la carrera de medicina en la UCV. Esto se conjugaba con lo que había mostrado en su niñez en Isnotú.

When he entered the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) to start his medical studies, José Gregorio was 17 years old.

La situación económica apretó en muchas oportunidades, por lo que junto con sus estudios de medicina se vio en la necesidad de dar clases particulares para ayudarse a sí mismo y a sus hermanos. Llegó hasta aprender de un amigo sastre a hacer ropa masculina y se hizo sus propios trajes. Sus compañeros reconocían sus virtudes de integra honestidad, espíritu de mortificación, de servicio y rectitud de conciencia.

Su vida era un ejemplo para sus compañeros universitarios. Estaba convencido de que: «En el hombre el deber ser es la razón del derecho, de manera que el hombre tiene deberes, antes que tener derechos».

The economic situation tightened on many occasions, so that along with his medical studies he saw the need to give private classes to help himself and his brothers. Durante su estancia en este colegio, el joven José Gregorio entabló amistad con el director y su esposa Pepita Perozo de Villegas. Según el doctor Villegas, «José Gregorio era poco dado a jugar con sus compañeros y prefería pasar el tiempo libre en compañía de libros». A corta edad ya conocía a los clásicos y se auto impuso con mucha disciplina la obtención de una vasta cultura enciclopédica. Durante sus años en el Colegio Villegas, José Gregorio siempre obtuvo las mejores notas, ganó distinciones y premios, y en varias ocasiones las medallas de la aplicación y de buena conducta. Fue tanto su adelanto que llegó a fungir como profesor de aritmética para los alumnos del primer curso. Entre 1878 y 1882 José Gregorio cursó en dicho colegio preparatoria y filosofía, graduándose de Bachiller en Filosofía en ese último año.

En sus años de universitario, José Gregorio fortaleció su carácter cristiano devoto con una gran disciplina interior combinada con una caridad para con los demás cada vez mayor.

Al graduarse con el título de Doctor en Medicina, el 29 de junio de 1888, era dueño ya de inconmensurables conocimientos, hablaba inglés, francés, portugués, alemán e italiano y dominaba el latín; y tenía conocimientos de hebreo, era filósofo, músico y tenía además profundos conocimientos de teología. Para cumplir la promesa hecha a su madre y con el deseo personal de ayudar a sus paisanos se traslada a ejercer la medicina en su pueblo natal,​ no sin antes instalar un pequeño consultorio provisional, con el cual se va extendiendo su fama como médico y su vocación de servicio a los más necesitados.

In his college years, José Gregorio strengthened his devout Christian character with great inner discipline combined with increasing charity for others.

Upon graduating with the title of Doctor of Medicine, on June 29, 1888, he was already the owner of immeasurable knowledge, spoke English, French, Portuguese, German and Italian and was fluent in Latin; and he had knowledge of Hebrew, he was a philosopher, a musician and he also had a deep knowledge of theology. To fulfill the promise made to his mother and with the personal desire to help his countrymen, he moved to practice medicine in his hometown, but not before setting up a small provisional consulting room, with which his fame as a doctor spread and its vocation to serve those most in need.

Back to the Andes THE DOCTOR OF THE POOR In 1888, Dr. Dominici (rector of the UCV) offered to help him financially to set up an office in Caracas, a noble gesture that José Gregorio thanked with these words: «- How I thank you for your gesture, Dr. Dominici! But you must tell him that my position is not here. I must go to my town.

There are no doctors in Isnotú and my post is there, there where one day my own mother asked me to come back to relieve the pain of the humble people of our land. Now that I'm a doctor, I realize that my position is there among mine ... ».

José Gregorio parte para Isnotú en agosto de 1888; desde Betijoque el 18 de septiembre de 1888, le escribe a su amigo Santos Dominici en Caracas: «…Mis enfermos todos se me han puestos buenos, aunque es tan difícil curar a la gente de aquí, porque hay que luchar con las preocupaciones … que tienen arraigadas: creen … en los remedios que se hacen diciendo palabras misteriosas: en suma;… La clínica es muy pobre: todo el mundo padece de disentería y de asma, quedando uno que otro enfermo con tuberculosis o reumatismo…La botica es pésima...»​

José Gregorio leaves for Isnotú in August 1888; from Betijoque on September 18, 1888, he wrote to his friend Santos Dominici in Caracas: «... My patients have all become good to me, although it is so difficult to heal people here, because we have to fight with concerns ... that they are rooted: they believe ... in the remedies that are made by saying mysterious words: in short; ... Regreso a los Andes EL MÉDICO DE LOS POBRES En 1888, el Dr. Dominici (rector de la UCV) ofreció ayudarlo económicamente para montar un consultorio en Caracas, noble gesto que José Gregorio agradeció con estas palabras: « – ¡Cómo le agradezco su gesto, Dr. Dominici! Pero debe decirle que mi puesto no está aquí.

Debo marcharme a mi pueblo. En Isnotú no hay médicos y mi puesto está allí, allí donde un día mi propia madre me pidió que volviera para que aliviara los dolores de las gentes humildes de nuestra tierra. Ahora que soy médico, me doy cuenta que mi puesto está allí entre los míos…».

El Dr. Hernández se radicó en Isnotú hasta el 30 de julio de 1889, luego de ejercer consecutivamente entre los tres estados andinos venezolanos (Trujillo, Mérida y Táchira), recorríendo las poblaciones con el fin de establecer un centro para el ejercicio permanente de su profesión. Regresaba de San Cristóbal y Mérida para consultar sus propósitos con su padre, y se encontró con una carta de su maestro, el Dr. Calisto González, donde decía que lo había recomendado al Presidente de la República Dr. Juan Pablo Rojas Paúl para que fuera a París a estudiar con perfección ciertas materias experimentales y así contribuir a la modernización de la medicina venezolana, porque creía que reunía las condiciones para tan importante misión, y que debía trasladarse a Caracas sin pérdida de tiempo y dispuesto a seguir viaje a Europa.

También participó en su formación el eminente Isidor Strauss, que había sido discípulo de Émile Roux y Charles Chamberland quienes lo fueron a la vez de Louis Pasteur, todos ellos precursores de la Bacteriología. Terminados sus estudios en esa ciudad, solicita permiso y se traslada a Berlín para estudiar Histología y Anatomía patológica, a su vez que inicia un nuevo curso de Bacteriología.

Culminados sus estudios, el Dr. Hernández regresa a Venezuela a fin de ingresar como profesor en la Universidad Central de Venezuela en Caracas; además, aprovecha para traer de Europa valiosos equipos médicos al Hospital Vargas, por instrucciones del gobierno venezolano. A él se debe la introducción del microscopio en Venezuela.

Dr. Hernández lived in Isnotú until July 30, 1889, after exercising consecutively between the three Venezuelan Andean states (Trujillo, Mérida and Táchira), touring the towns in order to establish a center for the permanent exercise of his profession.

He was returning from San Cristóbal and Mérida to consult his purposes with his father, and he found a letter from his teacher, Dr. Calisto González, where he said that he had recommended it to the President of the Republic Dr. Juan Pablo Rojas Paúl to be to Paris to study certain experimental subjects with perfection and thus contribute to the modernization of Venezuelan medicine, because he believed that he met the conditions for such an important mission, and that he should move to Caracas without loss of time and willing to continue traveling to Europe.

Studies in Europe In November 1889, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández was already studying in the laboratories of Charles Robert Richet (Nobel Prize in Medicine 1913), professor of Experimental Physiology at the Paris School of Medicine and who in turn had been a collaborator of Étienne Jules Marey and disciple of the wise Claude Bernard, maximum exponent of experimental medicine in France.18 In Mathias Duval's laboratory he delves into the areas of Microbiology, Normal Histology, Pathology, Bacteriology, Embryology and Experimental Physiology, among others.

The eminent Isidor Strauss, who had been a disciple of Émile Roux and Charles Chamberland who were at the same time of Louis Pasteur, all of them pioneers of Bacteriology, also participated in his training. After finishing his studies in that city, he applied for permission and moved to Berlin to study Histology and Pathological Anatomy, in turn starting a new course in Bacteriology.

After completing his studies, Dr. Hernández returns to Venezuela in order to become a professor at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas; In addition, it takes the opportunity to bring valuable medical equipment to the Vargas Hospital from Europe, on instructions from the Venezuelan government. To him is due the introduction of the microscope in Venezuela.

Carrera Profesional En 1891, Hernández regresa de Europa y, en el mes de noviembre de ese año, comienza su actividad como docente en las cátedras de Histología Normal y Patológica, Fisiología Experimental y Bacteriología, de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), convirtiéndose en el fundador de ambas. Además, al concluir sus estudios de postgrado en París y Berlín, le fue delegada la responsabilidad de adquirir con recursos del estado venezolano los materiales necesarios para instalar el Laboratorio de Fisiología Experimental de Caracas, así como la adquisición de la bibliografía que fuera necesaria para la apertura de las cátedras mencionadas en la UCV. Por otra parte, a Hernández se debe la introducción del microscopio en Venezuela, del que además enseñó su uso y manejo. También introdujo otros muchos instrumentos científicos que trajo de Francia, como atestigua su compañero, el doctor Augusto Pi Suñer.

Career In 1891, Hernández returned from Europe and, in the month of November of that year, he began his activity as a teacher in the chairs of Normal and Pathological Histology, Experimental Physiology and Bacteriology, of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), becoming the founder of both. On the other hand, he was the founder of the chair of Bacteriology, the first of this discipline that was founded in America, and the first person in Venezuela to publish a work of said discipline (Elements of Bacteriology, 1906). He also wrote about angina pectoris of a palute nature with Nicanor Guardia, and in 1893 published in several issues of the Medical Gazette. In addition to 11 published works and two that remained unpublished in the scientific field, he wrote five literary works. Only one of them, The Real Illness of Saint Teresa of Jesus written in 1907, was left unfinished; the others, Mr. Nicanor Guardia (1893), Art Vision (1912), In a Wagon (1912) and The Matins (1912), were published in the Illustrated Lame.

El 14 de septiembre de 1909 es nombrado profesor de la cátedra de Anatomía Patológica Práctica, la cual funcionó anexa al Laboratorio del Hospital Vargas, y de la cual se encargó hasta la creación de la cátedra de Anatomía Patológica de la Universidad Central, con asiento en el Instituto Anatómico, y que fue regentada por el doctor Felipe Guevara Rojas, en 1911. Por otra parte, fue el fundador de la cátedra de Bacteriología, la primera de esta disciplina que se fundó en América, y la primera persona en Venezuela en publicar un trabajo de dicha disciplina (Elementos de Bacteriología, 1906). También escribió sobre la angina de pecho de naturaleza paludosa junto a Nicanor Guardia, y en 1893 publicó en varios números de la Gaceta Médica. Además de 11 trabajos publicados y dos que quedaron inéditos en el campo científico, escribió cinco obras literarias. Sólo una de ellas, La verdadera enfermedad de Santa Teresa de Jesús escrita en 1907, quedó inconclusa; las demás, El Sr. Nicanor Guardia (1893), Visión de arte (1912), En un vagón (1912) y Los maitines (1912), fueron publicadas en el Cojo Ilustrado.

He is considered the promoter and pioneer of true scientific and pedagogical teaching in Venezuela, based on explanatory lessons, with observation of vital phenomena, systematic experimentation, vivisection practices and laboratory tests. He also colored and cultivated microbes and made Virchow's cell theory known. On the other hand, his facet as a physiologist and biologist is outstanding, knowing in depth physics, chemistry and mathematics, basic sciences and a fundamental tripod on which all animal dynamics rest.

Es considerado el impulsor y pionero de la verdadera docencia científica y pedagógica en Venezuela, basada en lecciones explicativas, con observación de los fenómenos vitales, la experimentación sistematizada, prácticas de vivisección y pruebas de laboratorio. También coloreó y cultivó microbios e hizo conocer la teoría celular de Virchow.

Por otra parte, es destacada su faceta como fisiólogo y biólogo, conociendo a fondo la física, la química y las matemáticas, ciencias básicas y trípode fundamental sobre la que reposa toda la dinámica animal.

His teaching work was interrupted twice. The first, when he decides to become religious and enter the monastery of the order of San Bruno in the Cartuja de Farneta, which he arrived on July 16, 1908, and from which he returned on April 21, 1909, rejoining in May of that same year to his academic activities at the University.

Su labor docente fue interrumpida en dos ocasiones. La primera, cuando decide hacerse religioso y entrar en el monasterio de la orden de San Bruno en la Cartuja de Farneta, a la cual llegó el 16 de julio de 1908, y de la que regresó el 21 de abril de 1909, reincorporándose en mayo de ese mismo año a sus actividades académicas en la Universidad.

La segunda vez que interrumpió sus actividades docentes fue a partir del 1 de octubre de 1912, cuando el gobierno dictatorial del general Juan Vicente Gómez decreta el cierre de la Universidad, ya que esta se había situado en contra de su régimen. Sin embargo, restablece su actividad docente en enero de 1916, tras la fundación de la Escuela de Medicina Oficial, que funcionó en el Instituto Anatómico. Hubo otra corta interrupción, pero esta vez sin apartarse del ámbito académico, ya que en 1917 viaja a las ciudades de Nueva York y Madrid para realizar estudios, quedando provisionalmente a cargo de sus cátedras el doctor Domingo Luciani. Reinicia su actividad docente el 30 de enero de 1918, hasta su muerte.

Death of José Gregorio Hernández

El 29 de junio de 1919 en horas de la tarde, José Gregorio Hernández salió a la esquina de Cardones a atender a una enferma de escasos recursos, pero no pudo llegar porque fue atropellado por Fernando Bustamante (un joven mecánico de 28 años de edad, dueño de un Essex) en la esquina de Amadores, La Pastora, Caracas, Venezuela El Doctor Hernández cayó golpeándose la cabeza contra el filo de la acera, lo que ocasionó una fractura en el cráneo. Fue atendido en el Hospital Vargas, donde falleció​.

On June 29, 1919 in the afternoon, José Gregorio Hernández went out to the corner of Cardones to attend to a patient with limited resources, but was unable to get there because he was run over by Fernando Bustamante (a 28-year-old young mechanic, owner of an Essex) in the corner of Amadores, La Pastora, Caracas, Venezuela Doctor Hernández fell hitting his head against the edge of the sidewalk, which caused a fracture in the skull. He was treated at the Vargas Hospital, where he died.

El día 30 de junio de 1919, en medio de una impresionante multitud de dolientes, el Dr. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros fue enterrado en el Cementerio General del Sur. Muchos años después, debido al inicio del proceso de beatificación, y por solicitud del Vaticano, se realizó la exhumación de sus restos mortales para luego ser trasladados hasta su actual lugar de reposo en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria ubicada en el centro de la ciudad de Caracas. Esta iglesia fue fundada por canarios en honor a su patrona, la Virgen de Candelaria.

Precisamente por los lazos históricos que existen entre las Islas Canarias y Venezuela, en este archipiélago existe una popular veneración por José Gregorio Hernández, devoción que se ve acrecentada por la gran colonia venezolana residente allí.

Conviene recordar que el propio doctor Hernández era de origen canario por parte de madre.

On June 30, 1919, in the midst of an impressive crowd of mourners, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros was buried in the General del Sur Cemetery. Many years later, due to the beginning of the beatification process, and at the request of the Vatican, the exhumation of his mortal remains was carried out and then they were transferred to their current resting place in the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria located in the center of the city of Caracas. This church was founded by canaries in honor of its patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria.

Assessment of your Work Hernández is the author of thirteen scientific essays on various disciplines, widely recognized by the National Academy of Medicine, of which he was founder. His work is of significant importance for his ability as a clinician to submit to the rigor of the anatomoclinical method that the French school had brought to its zenith in its application (as in the cases presented by Hernández on tuberculosis, pneumonia and yellow fever), for his ability to manage the resources derived from complementary diagnostic techniques (data from pathological histology, bacteriology, parasitology and physiology) to achieve a complete interpretation of the pathological processes present in the patient and for their ability to create hypotheses novel (the hematimetry data in the subjects of our environment, the description of a new form of angor pectoris of malarial origin).

Personalidad y legado Era conocido como un profesor culto (hablaba español, francés, alemán, inglés, italiano, portugués, dominaba el latín, era músico y filósofo) y exigente, y se caracterizaba por la puntualidad en el cumplimiento de sus deberes profesorales.

Formó una escuela de investigadores, quienes desempeñaron un papel importantísimo en la medicina venezolana. Discípulos de Hernández fueron, entre otros, el doctor Jesús Rafael Risquez, quien fue su sucesor en la cátedra de Bacteriología y Parasitología, y Rafael Rangel, considerado como el fundador de la parasitología nacional.

En cuanto a sus creencias, era profundamente católico, condición que nunca entró en conflicto con su labor científica, como apunta el doctor Juan José Puigbó: «Su faceta religiosa con todo lo encomiable que sea considerada en el plano místico, no debe opacar el inmenso aporte que realizó a la ciencia médica venezolana»

Religious life Despite not occupying any position within the clergy of the Catholic Church, José Gregorio was a fervent believer in Catholicism. In 1907, he decided to devote himself to religious life and, after discussing the case with the Archbishop of Caracas, Monsignor Juan Bautista Castro, sent a letter to the prior of the Order of San Bruno in the Charterhouse of Farneta. near Lucca (Italy). For his part, Monsignor Juan Bautista Castro also sent a letter of recommendation to the prior, requesting the admission of José Gregorio to the order. In 1908, he was admitted to the cloistered monastery, taking the name of Brother Marcelo.

However, nine months after his admission, he became ill in such a way that Father Superior arranged for him to return to Venezuela for his recovery.

He arrived in Caracas in April 1909, and that same month he received permission to enter the Santa Rosa de Lima Seminary (today the Santa Rosa Catholic University), although for a long time he still yearned for monastic life. After three years, he decides to try again and, this time, he sails for Rome with his sister Isolina. He entered theology courses at the Pontifical Pio Latin American College, thus thinking of preparing for the monastery. But once again his plans were thwarted by the disease: a lung condition that forced him to return to Venezuela.

He belonged to the Secular Franciscan Order of Venezuela (OFS), in the Fraternity of the Merced of Caracas, in the Church of Our Lady of Mercy of the Capuchin Friars, he made his profession as a secular Franciscan. That is the origin of that sensitivity and love for those most in need, he lived the charism and life of Saint Francis of Assisi, recognizing in the poor the person of Christ who is suffering, whom he served through his patients, giving his best regardless of late at night or adverse weather conditions.

He lived the Gospel like Saint Francis of Assisi and made it his own. His profession in the OFS La Merced was made on December 7, 1899 as it appears in the book of acts of the fraternity (faithful copy).

Vida Religiosa pesar de no ocupar algún cargo dentro del clero de la Iglesia católica, José Gregorio era un ferviente creyente del catolicismo. En 1907, decidió abocarse a la vida religiosa y, luego de discutir el caso con el arzobispo de Caracas, monseñor Juan Bautista Castro, envía una carta al prior de la Orden de San Bruno en la Cartuja de Farneta. cerca de Lucca (Italia). Por su parte, monseñor Juan Bautista Castro también envía una carta de recomendación al prior, en donde le solicita la admisión de José Gregorio a la orden. En 1908, es admitido en el monasterio de clausura, tomando el nombre de Hermano Marcelo. Sin embargo, nueve meses después de su ingreso, enferma de tal manera que el Padre Superior dispone su regreso a Venezuela para su recuperación la bacteriología, de la parasitología y de la fisiología).

Llega a Caracas en abril de 1909, y ese mismo mes recibe permiso para ingresar en el Seminario Santa Rosa de Lima (hoy Universidad Católica Santa Rosa), aunque durante mucho tiempo sigue anhelando la vida monacal. Transcurridos tres años, decide intentarlo de nuevo y, esta vez, se embarca para Roma con su hermana Isolina. Ingresó en los cursos de Teología en el Pontificio Colegio Pio Latino Americano, pensando así prepararse para el monasterio. Pero una vez más sus planes se vieron frustrados por la enfermedad: una afección pulmonar que le forzó a retornar a Venezuela.

Perteneció a la Orden Franciscana Seglar de Venezuela (OFS), en la fraternidad de la Merced de Caracas, en la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced de los Frailes Capuchinos, realizó su profesión como franciscano seglar. De ahí se desprende esa sensibilidad y amor por los más necesitados, vivió el carisma y la vida de San Francisco de Asís, reconociendo en el pobre a la persona de Cristo sufriente, a quien sirvió a través de sus pacientes, dando lo mejor de él sin importar altas horas de la noche o condiciones climáticas adversas. Vivió el Evangelio como San Francisco de Asís y lo hizo suyo. Su profesión en la OFS La merced la realizó el día 7 de diciembre de 1899 como consta en el libro de actas de la fraternidad (copia fiel).

On June 18, 2020, 30 Pope Francis approved the decree that recognizes the miracle attributed to the venerable Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, which opens the way to the future beatification.

The Church estimates the beatification ceremony of José Gregorio Hernández for the first quarter of 2021. As explained by the Hon. Bishop Tulio Luis Ramírez Padilla, vice-postulator of the cause of canonization, cannot yet be called blessed, since the beatification ceremony has not been carried out, and therefore still holds the title of venerable.

Siervo de Dios En el año 1972, la santa sede reconoce que el Dr. José Gregorio vivió una vida virtuosa y ejemplar, por ello le concedió el primer titulo que la Iglesia Católica da en el camino hacia la santidad que es Siervo de Dios.

Venerable Luego de iniciar el proceso, y completados los primeros casos, José Gregorio Hernández fue nombrado «venerable» por el papa Juan Pablo II el 16 de enero de 1986.

Beato El 27 de abril de 2020 la Arquidiócesis de Caracas anunció que la Comisión Teológica del Vaticano aprobó el milagro del venerable doctor José Gregorio Hernández en la curación de Yaxury Solórzano Ortega​ una niña de 10 años de edad que recibió un tiro en la cabeza durante un asalto a su padre en fecha 10 de marzo de 2017.

El 18 de junio de 2020,30 el papa Francisco aprobó el decreto que reconoce el milagro atribuido al venerable Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, que abre el paso a la futura beatificación.

La Iglesia estima la ceremonia de beatificación de José Gregorio Hernández para el primer trimestre del 2021. Según lo explicado por el Excmo. Mons. Tulio Luis Ramírez Padilla, vice postulador de la causa de canonización aún no se le puede decir beato, pues no se ha llevado a cabo la ceremonia de beatificación, y por tanto aún ostenta el titulo de venerable.

Nació el 18 de octubre de 1926 en Uracoa, estado Monagas. Desde 1941 hasta 1946 estudió en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas, actual Escuela de Artes Visuales Cristóbal Rojas cuando era dirigida por Antonio Edmundo Monsanto. Ahí, estudia artes gráficas en el taller de Pedro Ángel González, de quien fue asistente. Ya por esas épocas comienza a participar en el Salón Arturo Michelena y el Salón Oficial de Arte Venezolano del Museo Bellas Artes de Caracas. En 1947 gana la primera edición del Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas, disputado con Pascual Navarro y viaja a París, Francia. Regresa al año siguiente a Caracas donde participa en la organización del Taller Libre de Arte. A su regreso a París en 1950, participa en el grupo de Los Disidentes, junto a artistas como Alejandro Otero, Pascual Navarro, Carlos González Bogen, Perán Erminy, Rubén Nuñez, Narciso Debourg, Dora Hersen, Aimeé Batistini y J.R. Guillent Pérez.

De regreso a Caracas fundó en 1952, junto a Carlos González Bogen la Galería Cuatro Muros y realizan la Primera Exposición de Arte Abstracto en el país. También comenzó su colaboración con el proyecto de Ciudad Universitaria de Carlos Raúl Villanueva, donde, además de aportar 26 de sus propias obras, surge como supervisor de las obras de arte. A partir de ahí participa en otras realizaciones públicas, como las policromías de la Urbanización 23 de Enero. Desde hacía ya varios años, Manaure se desenvolvía dentro del arte abstracto, que conformaba la vanguardia artística venezolana de ese entonces. Luego, regresa al arte representativo desde las artes gráficas, especialmente la litografía, pero no abandona la expresión abstracta. En 1984 lo nombran Presidente de la Asociación Venezolana de Artistas Plásticos. El año 2009 se inaugura el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Mateo Manaure, en Maturín, Estado Monagas.

En la emblemática avenida Libertador de Caracas se despliega el gran mural Uracoa (2012)​ que es una reproducción horizontal de dos de las obras del mismo artista que recubre las escalera de emergencia del edificio de Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) ubicado en la ciudad capital.

El mural Uracoa ha sido enmarcado en el proyecto Vibra Caracas, junto a los Módulos Cromáticos de Juvenal Ravelo en la misma avenida Libertador. Ambas obras forman parte de la serie de intervenciones de arte urbano desarrolladas en la Plaza Venezuela y el bulevar de Sabana Grande.

Mateo Manaure fue uno de los artistas venezolanos más respetados por su aporte invaluable al arte contemporáneo. Falleció el 19 de marzo de 2018 en Caracas

La obra de Mateo Manaure ha pasado por distintas etapas. La primera, de tendencia representativa con temas clásicos como el desnudo, el paisaje y la naturaleza muerta, con un carácter gestual. Luego, al ir a París, su obra evoluciona hacia la abstracción geométrica y luego se torna en abstracción lírica. De esa manera, Mateo Manaure trabajó alternadamente la representación y la abstracción. Entre las series realizadas por él encontramos Pinturas Sobremontaje, Los Suelos de mi Tierra, Cuvisiones, Columnas Policromadas, Mirar a América, Orinoquia, Ofrenda a mi raza, entre otras.

He was born on October 18, 1926 in Uracoa, Monagas state. From 1941 to 1946 he studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas, the current School of Visual Arts Cristóbal Rojas when it was directed by Antonio Edmundo Monsanto. There, he studied graphic arts in the workshop of Pedro Ángel González, of whom he was an assistant. Around that time, he began to participate in the Arturo Michelena Salon and the Official Venezuelan Art Salon of the Fine Arts Museum in Caracas. In 1947 he won the first edition of the National Plastic Arts Prize, contested with Pascual Navarro and traveled to Paris, France.

The following year he returned to Caracas where he participated in the organization of the Free Art Workshop. Upon his return to Paris in 1950, he participated in the group of Los Disidentes, along with artists such as Alejandro Otero, Pascual Navarro, Carlos González Bogen, Perán Erminy, Rubén Nuñez, Narciso Debourg, Dora Hersen, Aimeé Batistini and J.R. Guillent Pérez.

On his return to Caracas, he founded the Cuatro Muros Gallery together with Carlos González Bogen and they held the First Exhibition of Abstract Art in the country. He also began his collaboration with the Carlos Raúl Villanueva University City project, where, in addition to contributing 26 of his own works, he emerges as supervisor of the works of art. From there it participates in other public achievements, such as the polychromies of the Urbanización 23 de Enero.

For several years now, Manaure had been involved in abstract art, which was the Venezuelan artistic avant-garde of that time. Then, he returns to representative art from the graphic arts, especially

Mateo Manaure's work has gone through different stages. The first, with a representative tendency with classic themes such as the nude, the landscape and still life, with a gestural character.

Then, when he went to Paris, his work evolved towards geometric abstraction and then turned into lyrical abstraction. In this way, Mateo Manaure alternately worked on representation and abstraction. Among the series made by him we find Overmount Paintings, The Soils of my Land, Cuvisions, Polychrome Columns, Look at America, Orinoquia, Offering to my race, among others.

The great Uracoa mural (2012) unfolds on the emblematic Libertador Avenue in Caracas, which is a horizontal reproduction of two of the works by the same artist that covers the emergency staircase of the Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) building located in the capital city. .

Mateo Manaure was one of the most respected Venezuelan artists for his invaluable contribution to contemporary art.

He died on March 19, 2018 in Caracas.
