Time flies when you ’ re having fun!
As I reflect on 5 years engaging in this true “labor of love,” curating and hosting our ETV “For The Love of Art” Juneteenth celebration (FTLOA), art exhibit and fundraiser, that cliché expresses exactly how I feel I had no idea whether anyone would come to our inaugural exhibit primarily outdoors in 2021 during the early days of the COVID pandemic and yet here we are 5 years and counting later All I knew was that it might help nurture my spirit and others to do something to support and highlight our artists, bring together and inspire our community, and to take a break

from the stress, fear, madness to focus on planning and executing a beautiful lovefest and escape for and with our Village!
A picture is worth more than 1,000 words! Artists have the unique ability to capture an emotion, tell a story, document history and preserve it for future generations to discover Their artwork also gives us the opportunity for personal reflection on the here and now, our past, as well as our aspirations and musing about the future So many incredible local, nationally, and even internationally renowned artists have made our ETV FTLOA celebration a success and can’t miss community gathering! It has become a Village Family Reunion of sorts with dozens of artists, hundreds of art enthusiasts and collectors, neighbors and friends, numerous Black business owners providing musical entertainment, culinary delights, flowers and decorations, photography and videography services, volunteers from the community lending a hand and the warmth, positive energy and love that only Art and Community Fellowship can generate Our annual For the Love of Art showcase at Montclair Art Museum continues to be my “happy place” and the perfect recipe satisfying the varied appetites of many with diverse artistic media expressed through sculpture, mixed media, oil and acrylic paintings, graphic pencil and charcoal drawings, watercolor, collage, pastel, quilting, photography and assemblage Figurative, abstract and landscapes all with the ability to take your breath away or transport you to another time or place
What an honor and privilege it has been for me, our ETV team and art selection committee to work with the artists and curate the exhibit and homecoming experience of all who walk through our doors!
Truly born out of the love for art, artists, and an understanding of how all forms of art have the unique power to bring people together, uplift and unify communities, capture history, send/plant powerful messages and tell a story, our For the Love of Art Juneteenth exhibit took shape with the help of the Village! Conceived of in late 2020 amidst a raging pandemic that isolated and traumatized so many of us, and the shutdown of most venues where our artists could showcase their work when we needed them to find help us find some beauty and escape during a time of pain, suffering and crisis and when so many of them needed us the most, I began to lay the foundation for what is now 5 years of celebrating fine art, fellowship and fun!
On the heels of executing a successful community art exhibit at the tail end of Black History Month in February 2020 - and less than 2 weeks before COVID shut down the world - 7 people made a mere dream a reality during a dark time of loss. My dear friend of many years and member of ETV’s executive team, Cheryl Easley, our mutual friend Dr. Judy Banks who introduced us to our newfound friend Dodji Gbedemah, co-owner of Kente Royal Gallery, introducing us to many talented artists, as well as fellow art enthusiast and collector, Alan Smith, who lent us extraordinary pieces from his collection to showcase over the years and connected us to extraordinarily talented artist, Mason Archie, made our inaugural 2021 and subsequent exhibits and fundraising a resounding success The icing on the cake came from longtime friend and MAM Board member, Michael Heningburg, connecting us to the African American Cultural Committee @ MAM and MAM’s Executive Director to help open the doors to the museum Teamwork made the dream work!
We set out to build something to last that touched all 3 of ETV’s strategic pillars of ETV’s mission We found the perfect partner in Montclair Art Museum who opened the museum ’ s outdoor and indoor spaces to us to allow for a safer means of gathering and a beautiful backdrop for the exquisite works of art to come!
Artists are Entrepreneurs and the Keepers of Culture!
Juneteenth is a celebration of Freedom - physical freedom from the bondage slavery It is an opportune time to honor the history and legacy of Black Americans, to reflect on the progress made and challenges faced, freedom of speech freedom of expression and to invest in the financial freedom of our artists as entrepreneurs who also give back and reinvest in the community by b donating a portion of Art sa proceeds to Empower The Village to keep our mission going through the art of their work in the exhibit We felt that 5 years after our inaugural exhibit and that coincides with the 5th anniversary of Juneteenth being declared a federal holiday by President Joe Biden only days before our exhibit opened was the light to time to archive our snippet of history for reflection, introspection, inspection during a new season to challenge for the communities we serve
We hope you enjoy perusing the selected pieces within our 5th Anniversary Commemorative Art Exhibit Journal as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you Let’s continue to Empower The Village as re-live (or explore for the very first time) 5 years of celebrating Black Joy, History, Freedom, Resilience, Creativity, Prosperity, Peace, and Power with every turn of the page!

Ben Jones, born in New Jersey in 1941, is an artist whose focus has always been on spirituality, culture, and politics He earned his BFA from William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ), MFA from Pratt University (Brooklyn, NY), and MA from New York University (New York, NY). Jones has made over fifty cultural exchange visits to Cuba since the 1970s, earning recognition from Granma International of Havana, Cuba, as one of the most important African-American artists of his generation. For over four decades, Jones’ multimedia installations have reflected his travels and research across Africa, Europe, South America, the United States, and the Caribbean His works are characterized by brilliant rhythmic colors, abstract motifs, dense symmetrically designed compositions, and symbols that blend classical African art and culture with the African Diaspora experience. Jones' artistic journey began with a political consciousness, expressing the social conditions of his time through art as a form of activism.

His pieces from the 1970s onwards reflect his exploration of African American heritage, encompassing African spiritualism, ritual, body painting traditions, as well as jazz and soul music. While rooted in the Black Power and Black Arts movements, Jones' work has evolved to address broader concerns such as environmental sustainability and the interconnectedness of all life forms His political and cultural involvement takes a global perspective, aiming for inclusivity and unity. Jones once stated, “I want my work to be for everyone. Once we realize that we are not only one world, but a part of an expanding universe, we begin to express the joy of creation and a love for all people.” Jones’ works of art are housed in prestigious permanent collections across institutions such as the Studio Museum in Harlem, Schomburg Center, New Jersey State Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Newark Art Museum, Driskell Center, Paterson Museum, Zimmerli Museum, and Jersey City Museum.
