2015 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID TOURING Arlington, Texas-In one of the most extended tours we’ve had in a long time we took the new

2015 Honda Accord Hybrid all across the great state of Texas. Man we are talking about two

trips to the Metro-plex to say the least. The thing comes to mind first is the 50 miles per gallon in the city and 45 on the highway for a whopping combined average of 47 miles per gallon. We are talking about more than 650 miles per tank full. Throw that in with the lower gasoline prices we are talking about traveling at the rates of the early 70s. Lord knows that had to bring back some memories of the good old

days. Honda has outdone themselves with this product line and we are living witness to that fact. The new Accord Hybrid is powered by a 2.0 Liter DOHC 16valve I-VTEC 4-cylinder engine with Electric Continuously variable transmission. Never before have we seen such a setup that simply allowed the most economically sound results of all times. Let us note the that final assembly point for the new Accord Hybrid is Marysville, Ohio with 70 per cent of its parts being from the United States and Canada with both the engine and transmission built in Japan. Getting a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA the new Accord holds it in that category also. Just looking into safety for a moment the new accord has driver and front passenger dual stage air bags with driver and front passenger side air bags with smart vent along with side curtain air bags ad roll over sensors. Throw in forward collision warning, lane departure warning and vehicle Stability assist plus anti-lock braking system. The Ace body structure helps to provide a stable as well as comfortable ride. As we made out trip to Arlington for the High School State Championship Football weekend, we had plenty of room for

out bags and equipment as well as plenty of leg room head and shoulder room as well. Both writer and photographer that made the trip with me are over 6 feet 3 inches and the room came in handy to say the least. Stable footing is provided by 17 X 7.5 Alloy Wheels wrapped by P 255/50R17 All-Season Tires giving you one of the most comfortable rides of all-times. The weather was slightly cold but the all climate control automatically adjusted to it and we were fine. Among the interior features the new Accord Hybrid also came with a 360-Watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 Audio touch screen system with 7-speakers giving us all we wanted in a good quality sound. A one-touch power moon roof came in handy at times as we ran into the sun during our journey. The leather trimmed seats were adjustable and we all felt good beginning to end of the trip. In closing please allow me to add the rear multi-view camera was special. The view when you are making a right turn as the right outside mirror gives you a full view of the ride side and really comes in handy at night on dark roads. At a price tag of just over 35 Grand this is an outstanding buy.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK MARINA LOVINGS-SAM HOUSTON While taking a visit to the old Forest Brook Campus to see Sam Houston and Westside tangle for a big class 6A boys basketball match up, we ran into the charming score keeper for the Tigers basketball program. She’s Marina Lovings a talented and lovely senior who’s the daughter of Amanda and Myron Lovings and what a great job she does for the team. With Math and Science technology being the new name surely Math is the favorite subject of this student. She is currently holding a 3.6 Grade Point Average and has already been

accepted to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where she plans to major in Criminal Justice. Having a interest in the way the courts works has been on this young lady’s mind for sometime and she is certainly capable of making a great college student. Working two jobs in her spare time as a server at a couple of the City’s top restaurants and keeping the books for the Tigers basketball team keeps Marina busy. When asked how would she rate the school spirit at Sam Houston

Dr. Wright is the seventh President of Prairie View A&M University, the second oldest public institution of higher education in Texas. Dr. Wright now leads the 129-year old HBCU with an established reputation for producing thousands of African American engineers, nurses and educators. A member of the Texas A& M University System, the University is dedicated to fulfilling its land-grant mission of achieving excellence in teaching, research and service. Prior to joining the Prairie View A&M University, Dr. Wright was Executive Vice-President for academic affairs and provost

at the University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to assuming that post, he was provost and vice president for academic affairs with increasing responsibilities from 1995 to 1998. In 1993, he joined the faculty at Duke University as vice provost for university programs and director of the Afro-American studies program at Duke University. At Duke, he also held the William R. Kenan, Jr., Chair in American History. From 1980 to 1993, he served as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor, and was the holder of the Mastin Gentry White Professorship of Southern History, and vice provost for undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin. His wealth of experience in higher education began as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky in 1977. Dr. Wright has been the recipient

of numerous fellowships, grants and awards. At the University of Texas at Austin, he received the Jean Holloway Award for Teaching Excellence, the “Eyes of Texas” Award for excellence in service and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Award for “Outstanding Black Faculty Member.” He was awarded the Andrew W. Mellon Faculty Fellowship at Harvard University and was the Friar Society Centennial Fellow for Teaching Excellence, the Silver Spurs Centennial Teaching Fellow and the Lillian and Tom B. Rhodes Centennial Teaching

Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. To his credit, Dr. Wright is the author of three books, which include: A History of Blacks in Kentucky: In Pursuit of Equality, 1890-1980, Volume II; Racial Violence in Kentucky, 18651940: Lynchings, Mob Rule, and “Legal Lynchings”, and the Life Behind a Veil: Blacks in Louisville, Kentucky, 18651930. He was presented the Governor’s Award by the Kentucky Historical Society for Lynchings, Mob Rule, and “Legal Lynchings”, and the Life Behind a Veil: Blacks in

Louisville, Kentucky. He currently has another book in progress, a biography of Robert Charles O’Hara Benjamin: A “Forgotten” Afro-American Leader and has published numerous articles, chapters in books and essays. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Wright received his bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in history from the University of Kentucky and his doctorate in history from Duke University. In 2004 Dr. Wright was awarded an honorary doctorate of Letters from the University of Kentucky.

THIS WEEK IN BASKETBALL - SAM HOUSTON BEATS WESTSIDE By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View The Sam Houston tigers clawed their way from an 11 point deficit in the second half to beat the Wolves of Westside 70-61. The win keeps them tied with Bellaire in district 20-6A action.

Trailing after each of the first three period the Tigers put a press on the Wolves and made it difficult for them to get the ball across the time line. Fact is Sam Houston got 8 straight point to trim the lead to three and later a trey tied the game at 56 and it was that 12 to 8 run to got them rolling. Carlton Prejean a junior who played the post very well scored a team high 22 points in the win. “Our coaches told me I had to come with my best in order to help my team win

games so we can to play today”. Prejean went on to say they had beaten Westside in the Houston ISD Tournament and they knew Westside would be ready for them. “We just wanted to show them we can play with as well again, all season long their freshmen are playing well and that’s what it takes to win a state championship”. Trailing 20-17 after one period and 32-30 at the half and 48-44 at the end of the third, the Tigers never lost focus and that big 26-13 fourth period

was the difference in the outcome. Thanks to a trapping defense the guard were able to get some great open shots. Kendric Davis had 15 points in the win and had a couple comments. “We kept trying to push the ball and stick together because we knew they were going to make it tough for us”. Davis said if the team continue to work hard they could actually go to state.

LADY PANTHERS WIN THE THRILL UPON THE HILL By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Prairie View, Texas-The Lady Panthers and head coach Dawn Brown get it going upon the Hill against longtime rival Texas Southern University 63-61. Thus they won the 2015 Thrill Upon The Hill contest Shamiya Brooks led the way while Jeanette Jackson chipped in 10 points and Alexus Parker and Chelsey Rosier added 9 points each. Trailing by 5 at the half the Lady Panthers get the ball inside to Brooks and then Chelsey was about to connect on 3 of 5 from 3-point range while Jackson got going later on. We spoke with Parker a sophomore guard from Savannah Georgia about the win. “It was big for us to get Shamiya going early in the game and her getting on the boards gave us a spark and really got all of us going”. The 5 feet 10 inch guard who played her high school ball at

Calvary Day School went on to add player great teams in the preseason really helped got us ready. “Those SEC Schools just kind of let you know what you need to work on and get you ready for conference play”. We asked Parker what was is it like to play for coach Dawn Parker. “She is very touch minded and I think it rubs off on us because nothing rattles her and mentally it makes us very strong”. Asha Hampton-Finch added 6 points and 5 boards for the Lady Panthers. Lamaria Coles had 6 points and 3 boards while Ebonee Tate added 4 points and 2 boards with La Sha Haynes and Christina Solomon added two points each for the Panthers.

We moved over to chat with Pre season All-American Jeanette Jackson a senior from Las Vega Nevada and the leader of the Lady Panthers squad. “We knew TSU would have problems guards Shamiya Brooks down on the blocks because she’s awe-

Jackson the sensation 5 feet 7 inch guard who played her high school ball at Sierra Vista high School added once TSU started to pack it in she was able to get the ball to some of their other player makers and shooters and their offense open up. Having a lot of tournament experience helped Jackson kept her pose while TSU jumped to an early lead. “For me it’s my fourth year so we’ve been in a lot of games against good teams so we kept doing what our coaches instructed us to do and we got rolling. Jackson ripped the Nets for 22 points to led the Lady Panthers past Mississippi Valley State 7861 for their fourth straight SWAC victory. Shamiya Brooks added 11 points and 10 boards for her fourth straight doubledouble.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK KENNARD ROBINSON-SAM HOUSTON By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Using a smothering press early in the fourth period the Sam Houston Tigers forced several turnovers and held the Wolves to only 13 points in the fourth period of their 70-61 win to remain tied for first play. Guard Kennard teamed with a swift and trapping back court team that bother the Wolves guards and resulting in key turnovers and easy baskets. “Our coaches tell us defense wins ballgames so we just kept pressuring them all game long”. Robinson said the offense will just come if you are willing to work hard on defense. “We’ve been working hard since last year and we want to show people Sam Houston and can do something special like go to State”. The Tigers had trailed Westside by 11 points at the time Wilson made his two treys and a steal that lead to the floater as the Wolves were forced to call a time out. It brought back memories of his father Terry Wilson who help Sam Houston win the state championship back in 1988. “ Well my father taught me how to shoot like that and my teammates went to me when I was open”. Terrell said of his floater from the right side is just part of what he does on the floor. “I’m a complete player and my coaches wanted us to

press more on defense and that open up some shots for us and we just wanted to put them in”. When we asked Terrell if he really thinks he can shoot with his father. “Yes sir I think I got him by a slight edge now but he can hoop and he taught me a lot”. Wilson went on to say they are kind of like his father’s team with a lot of great shooters so all they have to do is get the ball to the open man. We moved on to talk with what it like working under coach Ralph Barreras. “Our staff stresses working together and playing team ball and hard defense and it making us winners. The talented freshman went on to say he feels if they stick together and follow their coaching staff instruction they can go a long ways. “They tell us all the time teamwork and together-

Prairie View, Texas-In her second season as the head coach of the Lady Panthers Dawn Brown is on a roll after a slow start. Her Lady Panthers edged TSU 63-61 in the 2015 Thrill Upon the Hill Showdown between the two schools. Brown a graduate of Jackson State in 2005 is in her 5th season with the Panthers program all total. During that period she had placed four SWAC Championship rings on team’s fingers. Winning their first SWAC contest after dropping games to Southern and Alcorn to open SWAC play. “One thing is for sure this is team is going to show some resiliency and no matter who we play we do a great job of pro-

tecting our home court”. Brown went on to say they had players who were not at 100 per cent when they open SWAC play but those injuries are heeling well and the team is getting ready to play. “TSU has some big name players who can score in double figures in every game, but we us we have to play a good solid team game in order for us to be effective”. The lovely and talented coach went on to say she and her staff gave their team assignments and if everyone handles their assignments our team will do well and we were also very discipline. Brown added the rest that Brook got simply made her ready to play. After the conversation went on coach Brown shared a few secrets with us about how the Lady Panthers are so successful. “First of all we try to recruit players who can come in and play, while some school rebuild, we simply reload”. Brown did an outstanding job of being recruiting coordinator before getting the head coaching position so she knows her business very well and it shows. “We have three women on this team that has been to the SWAC championships and in the NCAA tournament so they take the lead and share what has to be done for the newcomers to get in step with what we are doing. Brown is assisted by Tron Griffin, Landon Bussie, Tarniesha Scott, Larry McNeil

and Recca Trice and all are getting into a grove that could end in another SWAC Championship at Toyota Center in March! RALPH BARRERAS SAM HOUSTO The Sam Houston Math and Science Technology Center boys basketball team is growing in leaps in bounds. Under the leadership of head coach Ralph Barreras and they are a force to be reckon with in district 20-6A. On this past Saturday over at the former North Forest gym they turned back three time defending champs Westside 70-61 after trailing by as many as 11 points in the second half. Barreras got his guys going and stressed to them to play team ball and it worked as they ran the Wolves down midway through the fourth period and tied the game at 56. From that point on it was all Sam Houston and it kind brought back memories to the days as the Tigers rolled to the state championship in 1988. We spoke with coach Barreras after the big win that keeps his team tied for first place with Bellaire at the midway point of the district play. “I think we are right on target our guys are executing down the stretch and getting the hang of what we are trying to get them to do”. Barreras went on to say coming back from 11 points made us happy because it shows they did every-

thing we asked them to do. We spoke with Barreras about freshman guard Terrell Wilson (son of state champ Sam Houston Guard Terry Wilson). “Yes he’s just a freshman but I just couldn’t take him off the court and I told him Shoot the rock man get hot as a skillet on the court”. He scored 8 straight points and it was the turning point in the game. “We expected a very tough game from Westside they are very solid and very well coached so we saw what we expected from them”. Sam Houston used a tough press and it bothered the Wolves at times and it turned out the be the difference in the outcome. “We felt we could wear them down and get their post player out of the game and we were able to get some easier shots on the other end of the court”. When asked about the 1988 state championship team of Sam Houston high school. “Sure man we love to hear people talking about that Championship team, the laid the road for us and we are just out here trying to dust it off”. Barreras went on to say several members of that team are still around and big time supporters of their program. “ We think it’s great to have them around hey man Terrell Wilson (Terry Wilson) played on that championship team and that’s a motivating factor for us and our school”. The Tigers are peaking at the right time and

could have a pretty good run in the playoffs. “It’s been a long time since 1988 but we would like nothing better than to go to state with group. “At the halfway point we are tied with Bellaire and we have a long ways to go because we’ve beaten Westside twice and it’s hard to beat a team three times plus we still have to play Lamar and Bellaire again”. We were impressed to see coach Barreras tell his team to out on the floor and thank the fans for coming to the game. In closing coach Barreras closed by saying it’s great to have good assistants (Demon Mitchell and Larkay James) and a student body and community that support what we are going. “I’m blessed to be in this position and our kids are buying into what we are doing her and that’s wonderful”.

Keeping the above scriptures in mind, the scriptures also teach that as Christians, we are not to give heed to fables and endless genealogies see (1Tim.1:4). Christians must not live by the flesh anymore, if they have put on the new man in baptism, and that NEW man MUST be SPIRITUAL (Rom.8:5-9). There is a SPIRITUAL family reunion each Lord’s Day, and it must be attended (Heb.10:25). Jesus said, “Who is my mother or my brethren ?” (Matt.12:47-50 & Mark3:32-35)

We are not to have any fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but, rather reprove them (2Cor.6:14-18; 7:1-3; Eph.5:6-11). Christians can’t have it our way, we must deny ourselves (Definition: deny ourselves -533 aparneomai (ap-arneh’-om-ahee); from 575 and 720; to deny utterly, i.e. disown, abstain a) to affirm that one has no acquaintance or connection with someone b) to forget oneself, lose sight of oneself and one’s own interests: KJV— deny), (Matt.16:24-25; John 12:25-26; Titus 2:12-15). We must do it Christ’s way, because we are NOT our own, we have been bought with a price (1Cor.6:20; 7:23). The day that we are born in the flesh, is the day we began to die, even eternally; so why would one glorify such (see Eccl. 4:1-4)? The day

that we are buried with Christ in baptism, thereby putting on Christ (Rom.10:14-17; Mark16:16; Luke 13:3; Rom.10:9-10; Acts2:38; Rom.6:3-8; Gal.3:27 Col.2:112), we are then born again (John3:1-7; 1Pet.1:18-25). We then MUST rise up a new SPIRITUAL man, a new CREATURE according to the apostle’s doctrine. ALL things MUST become new (2Cor.5:14-17). Then we began to live, even eternally; ONLY if we hold to the traditions and commandments, that we have read and learned in the apostle’s doctrine (John 17:20-21; Acts2:41-42; 1Cor.11:1-3; Eph.3:1-7; Philip.4:6-9; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John4:5-6; Jude1:16-19). Now this is something to glorify and then we will be glorying in the Lord, not in the flesh (1Cor.1:26-31). Christians must celebrate this spiritual birth through obedience, and should be thankful for it every moment of the day. There are three places in scripture, the word birthday is mentioned as something celebrated or kept, two of the instances spoke of the same event. Executions happened at both of these celebrations, and they were not followers of God, Christ, or the Apostles (Gen.40:1-23; Matt.14:1-12; Mark 6:14-30). There are no examples of Jesus himself, his apostles or anyone that followed them, ever celebrating carnal birthdays or reunions in any manner. We believe this is true because these are CARNAL, FLESHLY, EARTHLY traditions. (Rom.8:4-10; Philip.3:1820). Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. If Christ and those before us SUFFERED not to participate in such things, why do “Christians” today think they have the right not to suffer? We must not be too proud to accept the WORD; after all it is what will judge us in the last day, John12:46-50. Then the scriptures tells us of the few that will find and accept the Word, and the many that will not accept it because of being blinded by the god of this world, “the Devil”; Matt.7:13-29 and 22:14;

BETTY WASHINGTON LEAVES FOND MEMORIES By King Arthur Prayther A King-Size View Dallas, Texas-North Texas has lost one of it’s most treasured people when Betty Washington passed away on December 30, 2014. The widow if the late Ferdinand “Fats” Washington passed away of after a long illness. Known for writing of “Pledging My Love” Fats Washington and his wife operated Little M Publishing Company and were credited with the writing of many songs that made it to the top. After his death in the

early 70s, Fats widow kept the company going for many years.

Born Betty Lois Thomas on August 24, 1933 in Karmack, Texas, Betty attended Booker T. Washington high school in Shreveport, Louisiana. At age 19, Betty married Ferdinand “Fats” Washington and lived in Shreveport until the mid-fifties. They moved to Los Angeles California and it was there Betty gave birth to two sons Gary Glenn and Steven Gerard Washington. In 1969 they moved to Dallas and continued to write and produce songs for known artists until Fats passed away.

member of the Silver Star program of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church and more recently joined Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. She attended very well until her health begin to fail her.

Among the people she helped is Soul and Blues Legend Ernie Johnson who always made time to visit with Mrs. Washington in her last days. Fact is just before the Holidays Johnson paid her a visit and it turned out to be their last meeting. Having talked

with Mrs. Washington on the phone we found her to be very pleasant and filled with a lot of good information about the recording industry. We enjoyed our conversation very much and consider it one of the best encounters we’ve had.

Known as a loving mother and a very good warm hearted person Betty Washington certainly lived up to pledging her love to all she came in contact with. Both her husband Fats and son Gary Glenn Washington preceded her in death. But Betty

leaves to mourn son Steven Gerard Washington, Grandsons Daryl Davis, Garrett Washington, Ryan Washington and Xavier Washington. Zyra Washington (granddaughter) and Armond Washington Great grandson, William (Bubba) Puffins (Brother) Regina Puffins (sister-in-love) along with a host nieces and nephews and friends as well church members. The final arrangements were handled by Angelyss Funeral Home in Dallas and the internment at Carver Cemetery in Ferris, Texas.

Accepting Christ as her Savior at an early age at First Bible Baptist Church, Betty would be active member in the Sunday School and a member in the Dallas Regional Missionary District Association. In 1999 Betty graduated from Southern Bible Institute of Theological studies. She was also a longtime

SHAMIYA BROOKS P.V. Prairie View, Texas-The Lady Panthers of coach Dawn Brown are getting into a grove for the season as they rebound from a slow start. Losing to both Southern and Alcorn the Defending SWAC Tournament Champs got it rolling in a thriller over TSU upon the Hill. Junior Center Shamiya Brooks led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Lady Panthers came from behind to beat the Lady Tigers of TSU. Brooks played high school ball at Troupe High School in West Point, Georgia is a 6 feet 4 inch junior who plays the post very well. “I knew coming into the game my teammates told they were going inside to me and I needed to put those shots down”. The charming Junior post player went on to say the pre-season games against tougher schools helped to get her ready for SWAC action. “We played well in those games against the bigger school and I think it was confidence builder for us and tonight’s win gets us rolling”. Brooks was right because she
