l Puerto de Mahón vuelve a ser un escenario de cine y un set de televisión al aire libre gracias a la segunda serie que Empatic realiza para IB3 TV, el ente autonómico balear de televisión. Se trata de “El Secret de les Pedres” una serie de 14 capítulos de alrededor de 50 minutos en los que la productora menorquina, que a la vez edita esta revista junto a otras publicaciones, cuenta la historia de las Illes Balears a través de sus edificios más singulares.

Esta serie documental reconstruirá en 3D una serie de 13 edificios singulares del archipiélago para contar las distintas técnicas que se emplearon en su construcción y aprovechará para contar el contexto en el que se realizó, los momentos históricos más importantes y la vida de los personajes más significados de las distintas épocas por las que transcurre la serie. La producción estará conducida por el periodista y presentador menorquín Dani Bagur, quien al margen de dirigirnos a través de los nudos del tiempo, entrevistará a expertos en las materias relacionadas con los edificios. Además, al igual que ocurrió con “Menorca Británica”, la anterior serie producida por Empatic, para IB3 TV, en “El Secret de les Pedres” volverá a mezclarse la realidad con la recreacción de momentos históricos significativos a través de ficciones realizadas por actores.

La producción se inició el pasado 2 de mayo con el rodaje del capítulo dedicado a la ‘Illa del Rei”, en especial al Hospital Militar que los británicos construyeron en el siglo XVIII, su construcción y su uso. Pero este islote en medio del Puerto de Mahón es mucho más que el magnífico edificio sanitario. En la entonces ‘Illa del Conills’ desembarcó en 1287 el rey Alfonso III para conquistar la isla a

Port Mahón is once again the setting of a film and outdoor television series thanks to the second series Empatic is making for IB3 TV, the Balearic regional television channel. “El Secret de les Pedres” (The Secret of the Stones) is a 14-episode series of about 50 minutes each in which the Minorcan film production company, which also publishes this magazine along with other publications, retells the story of the Balearic Islands through its most unique buildings.

This documentary series will reconstruct in 3D a series of 13 unique buildings of the archipelago to recount the different techniques that were used to build them, and at the same time the context in which they were made, as well as the most important historical moments and the lives of the most significant people of the different periods which the series covers. The production will be overseen by the Minorcan journalist and presenter Dani Bagur who will direct us through the knots of time, and will interview experts on matters related to the buildings. In addition, as was done in “British Menorca”, the previous series produced by Empatic, for IB3 TV, in “El Secret de les Pedres” there will be a mix of reallife with re-enactments of the significant historical moments through fictional scenes with actors.

Production started on 2nd May with the shooting of the episode on ‘Illa del Rei’, especially about the British Military Hospital built in the 18th century, its construction and use. But this islet in the middle of Port Mahón is much more than the home of the magnificent hospital.

los musulmanes de Abu Umar. Pero incluso antes, en el siglo VI un grupo de clérigos cristianos acompañados de una veintena de familias, posiblemente de origen bizantino, se establecieron en el islote. Allí construyeron una basílica y diversas estancias.

“El Secret de les Pedres” contará la historia de otros edificios como el poblado de Torre d’en Galmés, la Catedral de Menorca, la muralla de Dalt Vila en Eivissa o Sa Llotja, el Santuari de Lluc, la Catedral de Palma o las murallas del Alcúdia, entre otras.

Empatic ya produjo en 2014 para IB3 TV “Menorca Británica”, una serie de corte histórico en la que contaba la historia del convulso siglo XVIII en Menorca con tres dominaciones británicas, una francesa y dos recuperaciones españolas, pero sobre todo el legado que dejó el Imperio Británico en Menorca.

“El Secret de les Pedres” will recount the story of other buildings such as the town of Torre de’n Galmés, the Cathedral of Minorca, the walls of Dalt Vila in Ibiza or Sa Llotja, the Sanctuary of Lluc, the Cathedral of Palma or the walls of Alcúdia, among others.

Empatic, has already produced in 2014 for IB3 TV “British Minorca” a historical series in which the story of the tumultuous 18th-century Minorca with three British dominations, a French and two Spanish recoveries, but mostly the legacy left by the British Empire in Minorca is retold.

St. Phillip Castle, once a Spanish castle then a British fortress in the 18th century

El Castillo de San Felipe, guardián del Puerto de Mahón fue a mediados del siglo XVIII una de las fortificaciones militares más espléndidas de la época, gracias a las ampliaciones que realizaron los británicos durante su ocupación.

El saqueo de Barbarroja a Maó en 1535 (página 12) obligó a Carlos V a construir un castillo en la orilla sur del Puerto de Mahón. La primera piedra se colocó el 1 de mayo de 1555, un año antes de la entronización de Felipe II, del que adquiere su nombre.

En julio de 1558, todavía sin acabar (se finaliza en 1608), fue capaz de rechazar el ataque del pirata turco Pialí, quien ante la imposibilidad de tomar Maó, saqueó a fuego y sangre Ciutadella en el que se llegó a conocer como ‘S’any de sa Desgràcia’.

La dominación británica de Menorca representó un periodo de esplendor para la isla y el Puerto de Mahón, una de las bases militares y comerciales más importantes del Mediterráneo Occidental, gracias a las ampliaciones de San Felipe. Desde la ocupación británica en 1708, el castillo español empieza a transformarse.

Para la corona británica era imprescindible su ampliación, con el objeto de aliviar la presión sobre su poderío naval en la defensa de Menorca.

St. Phillip Castle, guardian of Port Mahón was in the mid-18th century, one of the most magnificent military fortresses of its time, thanks to the expansion that the British carried out during their occupation.

The plundering of Barbarossa in Maó in 1535 (page 12) forced Charles V to build a castle on the south shore of Port Mahón. The first stone was laid on 1st May 1555, a year before the enthronement of Phillip II, from which takes its name. In July 1558, still unfinished, (it was finished in 1608), it was able to drive the Turkish pirate Pialí away, who after his unsuccessful attempt to besiege Maó, sacked Ciutadella fiercely in which became known as ‘S’any de sa Desgràcia’ or the unfortunate year.

The British domination of Minorca represented a period of splendour for the island and for Port Mahón, one of the most important military and commercial bases of the Western Mediterranean, thanks to the expansion of the St. Phillip Castle.

Since the British occupation in 1708, the Spanish castle began to transform. For the British crown its expansion was essential in order to relieve pressure on its powerful navy in the defence of Minorca.

El castillo abaluartado español ocupó el centro de la obra militar posterior, en alto y en lugar predominante.

Los ingleses rodearon los cuatro baluartes con sendas contraguardias: Gales (12), Real (17), George (9) y Hannover (14). (13), Príncipe Guillermo (7) y Carlota (15). Estas obras, separadas entre si por fosos secos, formaban la estrella interior del castillo.

Más tarde se construyó una línea envolvente. Desde la batería Argyll y Anstruther (24), partía la estructura defensiva hacia el norte, donde se levantó el Fuerte de la Reina (23) o Cadogán como se llamó antes, y la

luneta nueva o reducto Kane (22).

Algo más adelante se ubicó la luneta oeste (21), seguida de la luneta Carolina (20) y la suroeste (19) para acabar en la Cala San Esteban en la luneta sur (18). Esta línea disponía de un foso en cada una de ellas.

Para evitar que un hipotético sitiador pudiese colocar sus baterías en el otro lado de la Cala San Esteban,

Es Freginal no fue siempre el bonito y verde parque de Maó que es hoy.

Durante cuatro días de septiembre de 1535, la entonces hondonada situada extramuros de la ciudad, fue el campamento de Hizir Bin Yakup, conocido en todo el Mediterráneo Occidental como Jeireddín Barbarroja. Donde hoy se encuentra el parking municipal y sus jardines, el gran enemigo del imperio español del siglo XVI, corsario a las órdenes del

sultán Soleimán I, almirante de la flota otomana y temido pirata berberisco, plantó las tiendas de más de 1.000 hombres para iniciar el sitio de la ciudad. Es Freginal sirvió de perfecto refugio a los piratas otomanos contra las ballestas de los pocos militares maoneses apostados en una débil y obsoleta muralla, muy poco adecuada para resistir los bolaños (proyectiles de piedra) de la artillería de Barbarroja. Su lugarteniente fue quien

dirigió la estrategia desde Es Freginal. ‘Es Jueu’ como le apodaban, pirata violento y sanguinario, aprovechó el desnivel de la zona para plantar cañones en grupos de tres, con lo que poder alcanzar los muros que transcurrían por la actual Calle Bastió y Calle Deià. Además apostó grupos de hombres en el resto de puertas de la ciudad a unos 300 metros de distancia como medida de seguridad.

Maó estaba perdida.

Es Freginal was not always the pretty green park in Mahón that it is today.

For four days in September 1535, the then gulley located outside the walls of the city, was the site of Hizir Bin Yakup’s camp, known throughout the Western Mediterranean as Hayreddin Barbarossa or Redbeard.

Where the municipal car park and gardens are located today, the great enemy of the Spanish empire in the 16th century, privateer under

the command of Sultan Suleiman I, admiral of the Ottoman fleet and feared Barbary pirate, set up camp with more than 1,000 men ready to besiege the city. Es Freginal served as a perfect retreat for the Ottoman pirates from the crossbows of the small army of Mahón stationed in a weak and outdated wall, woefully inadequate to withstand Barbarossa’s stone projectiles. His lieutenant was the one who led the plan of action

from Es Freginal. Nicknamed ‘Es Jueu’, the violent and bloodthirsty pirate, used the slope in the area to install cannons in groups of three to reach the walls that ran through the streets that are now called Bastió and Deià. He also stationed groups of men in the rest of the city gates at about 300 metres away as a safety measure. Maó was lost.

Por la mañana, cuando las autoridades se dieron cuenta de las intenciones de los sarracenos, solicitaron ayuda a Ciutadella. El consejo insular pidió auxilio a Mallorca y envió un contingente a Maó al mando del gobernador Galceran Oliver que llegó el día 3 de septiembre. Este grupo de campesinos y artesanos mal armados fueron diezmados con facilidad por los bien pertrechados profesionales turcos, que ya por entonces habían abierto huecos en la muralla, el más significativo en la zona en la que hoy se ubica el Teatro Principal, lugar por la que entró Barbarroja el día 4 de septiembre. El comandante otomano, una vez se hizo con el control de Maó ordenó su saqueo. Solo duró una noche, pero fue suficiente.

El día 5 zarpó de nuevo con sus naves. En el hueco que dejó en la muralla y por el que entraron sus mercenarios se levantó el Bastió Buit de planta circular, unido a la muralla por dos paños. Hoy ya no existe y en su lugar se erigió en 1829 el Teatro Principal.

The island council asked Mallorca to help and a contingent was sent to Maó under the command of Governor Galceran Oliver that arrived on 3rd September. This group of poorly armed peasants and artisans were easily decimated by the well-armed professional Turks, who by then had penetrated the wall, the largest opening made was in the area where today the theatre, Teatro Principal, is located, the exact location where Barbarossa entered the city on 4th September. Once the Ottoman commander took control of Maó, he ordered it to be sacked. It only lasted one night, but it was enough. On 5th of September they sailed away with their ships. In the gap left in the wall where the mercenaries had entered, the Bastió Buit (bastion) was built, with a circular floor, attached by two stretches of wall. Today it no longer exists and in its place the Teatro Principal was erected in 1829.

La Industrial Mahonesa THE “INDUSTRIAL MAHONESA” La Industrial Mahonesa fue durante casi 60 años una próspera factoría textil, radicada en el Puerto de Mahón. Se construyó en Cala Figuera en 1856 y fue una de las primeras industrias menorquinas de calado, precursora de las fábricas que nacerían en la segunda mitad del XIX. Introdujo en Menorca el uso de la máquina de vapor, de ahí su enorme importancia histórica. Su producción de tejidos de algodón fue muy solicitada en todo el territorio nacional. De sus telares salieron tejidos famosos y colores tan solicitados como el “azul mahón”. Pero nada es eterno, en 1904 la ya por entonces Fabril Mahonesa cayó víctima de una fuerte crisis y no tuvo más remedio que cerrar. El 5 de julio de 1911 se subastaron todos sus máquinas, terrenos y efectos.

La Industrial Mahonesa was for nearly 60 years a prosperous textile factory, located in Port Mahón. It was built in Cala Figuera in 1856 and was the first lace factory of Minorca, a forerunner of the factories that were born in the second half of the 19th century.

It brought the use of the steam engine to Minorca, hence its enormous historical importance. It’s cotton fabric production was highly sought after throughout Spain. From their looms famous fabrics and colours such as “blue Mahón” were highly requested. But nothing is eternal, in 1904 the once Fabril Mahonesa fell victim to a severe crisis and was forced to close.

On 5th July 1911 all machines, land and effects were auctioned off.

UNA BASÍLICA PALEOCRISTIANA DE MÁS DE 1.500 AÑOS Illa del Rei, an over 1.500-year old paleochristian basilica

H

ace 1500 años, en pleno siglo VI, la Illa del Rei, el islote de cuatro hectáreas radicado en pleno centro del Puerto de Mahón, acogió a una comunidad formada por una decena de monjes y una veintena de familias, posiblemente de origen bizantino.

Desde que en 1888, un campesino en plena labor de arado de la zona descubrió algunas teselas del mosaico de una basílica paleocristiana, se han sucedido distintas hipótesis

sobre el origen de aquellos cimientos excavados en 1964 por la arqueóloga menorquina María Luisa Serra. La realidad es que se trata de un complejo cristiano del siglo VI, que reúne una iglesia o basílica de 18’5 x 11’5 metros de planta rectangular, un baptisterio (recinto donde se encuentra la pila bautismal) y una necrópolis. Pero además, han salido a la luz viviendas y algunos espacios para realizar actividades productivas. El elemento más vistoso de

la construcción es el mosaico que se encuentra hoy en el Museo de Menorca, pero históricamente hay otros elementos más valiosos que nos hablan del tipo de comunidad que vivió en este complejo, ya que al margen del edificio litúrgico, se han descubierto establos, almacenes de grano, así como depósitos de salazón, sistema de recogida de aguas pluviales e incluso lo que pudiera haberse tratado de una torre de vigilancia marítima.

1,500 years ago, in the 6th century, the Illa del Rei or King’s Island, the islet of four hectares based in the heart of Port Mahón, was the home to a community of a dozen monks and twenty families, possibly of Byzantine origin.

In 1888 when a farmer was ploughing the area, a discovery of some pieces of the mosaic of an early Christian basilica was made, and since then there have been various hypotheses about

the origin of its foundations that were unearthed in 1964 by the Minorcan archaeologist Maria Luisa Serra. The real truth is that this is a 6th-century Christian complex, which includes a church or basilica whose rectangular floor measures 18.5 x 11.5, a baptistery (enclosure where the baptismal font is) and a necropolis. In addition, dwellings and some spaces for productive activities have also been discovered. The most attractive element

of the site is the mosaic that is now in the Museum of Minorca, but historically there are other more valuable items that tell us about the kind of community that lived on these premises, like the discovery of stables, grain storage houses and salt tanks, system for rainwater collection and even what might have been a maritime surveillance tower, which were all near the liturgical building.

LAS JOYAS ARQUEOLÓGICAS DE LA BASÍLICA PALEOCRISTIANA / ARCHAEOLOGICAL JEWELS OF THE PALEOCHRISTIAN BASILICA

Stibadium: Es un tipo de mesa semicircular que se puso de moda en el Bajo Imperio romano pero que su origen es mucho más antiguo. Esta mesa es muy importante en el mundo romano, de ahí su enorme trascendencia. Estaba en una habitación cuadrangular (ver página anterior) y consistía en un mesa central que a su alrededor tenía una banqueta semicircular a la misma altura, en la que los comensales estaban recostados sobre unos cojines rellenos de paja y hojas secas como se muestra en la representación de una escena en el stibadium.

Stibadium: A type of semi-circular table that became fashionable in the Roman empire although its origin is much older. This table is very important to the Roman world, hence its enormous importance. It was in a quadrangular room (see previous page) and consisted of a central table, around it a semi-circular bench at the same height, in which the diners were seated on cushions filled with straw and dry leaves shown in the representation of a scene in the Stibadium.

Depósitos salazón: Revestidos con ‘opus signinum’, un mortero de cal, arena y fragmentos pequeños de roca silícea que se apisonaba para compactarlo para impermeabilizar. Estos depósitos se utilizaban para conservar en salazón productos agrarios o de la actividad pesquera.

Torre de vigilancia: Una de las cosas más disonantes del complejo es el grosor atípico de los muros de uno de los habitáculos. Los arqueologos sostienen que por este motivo y su situación en un promontorio que domina toda la bocana del Puerto, pudo haber sido una torre de vigia.

Pila bautismal: En el extremo este de la nave de la Basílica se encuentra el Baptisterio, un recinto que dispone de una ‘piscina bautismal’ revestida de mortero por dentro y por fuera, construida por encima del nivel del pavimento. Servía para bautizar a los miembros de la colonia.

Salt Tanks: Coated with ‘opus signinum’, a mortar of lime, sand and small fragments of siliceous rock that was stamped to compact it for waterproofing. These deposits were used to preserve produce and fish products.

Surveillance Tower: One of the most dissonant things of the complex is the unusual thickness of the walls of one of the living spaces. Archaeologists argue that for this reason and its location on a particular point that controls the entrance to the Port, that it may have been a surveillance tower.

Centuria Menorca “CENTURIA MENORCA” La rendición de Menorca en febrero de 1939 fue uno de los últimos episodios de la Guerra Civil Española (19361939). Durante los tres años que duró la contienda, Menorca fue la única de las Illes Balears en mantenerse fiel al gobierno republicano salido de la urnas, ya en total descomposición. El ahínco de los menorquines por evitar avance de la tropas del general Franco, le llevó a reclutar tropas de milicianos para lucha contra el fascismo que se avecinaba. Uno de éstos fue el intento por invadir Mallorca, mediante un ataque sorpresa de las milicias menorquinas comandadas por el capitán Alberto Bayo. En la imagen podemos observar a los milicianos de la “Centuria Menorca” en 1936 embarcando, fusil en mano y sin uniforme, esperanzados en poder detener al ejército rebelde en Mallorca. El intento fracasó.

The surrender of Minorca in February 1939 was one of the last events of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). During the three years of the war, Minorca was the only island of the Balearic Island chain that remained faithful to the new recently-voted republican government, already in poorly state. Due to the resistance of the Minorcans to prevent General Franco’s troops from advancing, this led them to recruit militant troops to fight against fascism that was approaching. One of these was the attempt to invade Mallorca by a surprise attack of the Minorcan militias commanded by Captain Alberto Bayo. In the picture we can see the militants of “Centuria Menorca” in 1936, landing with a rifle in hand, without a uniform hoping to be able to stop the rebel army in Mallorca. The attempt failed.

El CN Ciutadella acoge el Nacional GALP de snipe

La Regata Menorca Sant Joan vuelve otro año al Puerto ‘Minorca Sant Joan’ returns Port Mahón, 23rd to 25th June La Regata Menorca Sant Joan-Trofeo Alfonso XIII, organizada por el Club Marítimo de Mahón, la Real Federación Española de Vela y el Real Club Náutico de Barcelona vuelve otro año más fiel a su cita al Puerto de Mahón entre el 23 y el 25 de este mes de junio. El puerto de la Ciudad Condal será el punto de partida de la primera fase, el Trofeo Alfonso XIII, el jueves 23.

Tras 135 millas náuticas, la llegada está prevista para el 24 de junio.

Un día después se celebra la segunda prueba, la Regata Puerto de Mahón. La línea de salida se dará en ‘Sa Colàrsega’ para llegar a una boya de señalización situada en la bocana. Después volverán para cruzar la meta frente al Club.

The traditional cruiser class Regatta Minorca Sant Joan, jointly organized by the Club Marítimo de Mahón and RCN Barcelona will open the 2016 season of the top sailing regattas in Port Mahón. The Regatta will begin on 23rd June with the offshore-race that will set sail in Barcelona and take course to Port Mahón. The most spectacular race will be held on 25th. It will be a contest within Port Mahón. The starting point is usually in the end of the port in different sets due to the high number of participants and after incalculable and impossible tacking, the course will be set to a buoy outside the harbour a nd the finish line right in front of Club Marítimo de Mahón.

El Club Nàutic de Ciutadella acogerá los días 28, 29, 30, 31 de octubre y 1 de noviembre el Campeonato de España Absoluto de la clase snipe que patrocinan las nuevas estaciones de servicio de Galp en Menorca.

Este evento reunirá a más de cincuenta tripulaciones de todo el territorio nacional en cuatro días de regatas.

CN Ciutadella Hosts the Snipe Championship, “El Nacional GALP” Club Nàutico de Ciutadella will host on 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st October and 1st November the championship, Campeonato de España Absoluto in the snipe class that is sponsored by the new Galp petrol stations in Minorca.

Pau Hierro from Club Marítimo de Mahón, has won the bronze medal in the “Copa de España” for Promising Young Cadets in Kayaking in the 1000-metre race held at the Centro de Alto Rendimieto de La Cartuja in Seville that brought together more than 700 athletes aged between 13 and 16 years from more than 70 clubs from 14 different autonomous communities.

The yachtsman from Club Náutic de Ciutadella, Pere Ponsetí was the winner of the under-18 laser 4.7 class in the “Copa de España”, a triumph that has helped him to enter the subchampionship in the absolute category. “Copa de España” was held in the Port of Santa María in Cádiz.

MISTRAL (NW): Viento intenso, frío y seco. Afecta mucho a Menorca. Suele ser racheado y arreciar de día para amainar de noche.

Dura de tres a seis días y deja un cielo azul intenso.

Se origina al encontrarse el Anticiclón de las Azores y una borrasca que se desplaza hacia el NE de Europa, creando un frente frío que avanza hacia los Alpes. Sus montañas lo retienen, enfrían y canalizan hacia el Valle del Ródano aumentando su velocidad por el efecto túnel.

MISTRAL (NW): Intense, cold, dry wind greatly affects Minorca. It usually comes in intense gusts by day and dies down at night.

It lasts three to six days and leaves the sky a deep-blue colour. It originates when an anticyclone from the Azores and a squall moving to the northeast of Europe meet, creating a cold front that moves towards the Alps. The mountains retain it, cool and channel it to the Rhone Valley increasing its speed by the tunnel effect.

PONIENTE (W): It’s a westerly wind that moves eastward and as it progresses it gradually loses moisture and gets warmer, generating high temperatures and dry conditions. When the westerly wind is strong it causes powerful waves on the coast of the Balearic Islands. It is formed by the difference in pressure between one or more consecutive squalls on the Atlantic and located beneath an anticyclone over northern Africa.

PONIENTE (W): El viento del poniente es un viento del oeste que se desplaza hacia el este y que a medida que avanza va perdiendo la humedad y ganando temperatura, generando temperaturas altas y ambiente seco. Cuando el poniente sopla con fuerza provoca fuerte oleaje en la costa de Balears. Se forma por la diferencia de presión entre una o varias borrascas consecutivas situadas sobre el Atlántico y un anticiclón debajo situado sobre el norte de África.

TRAMONTANA (N): Viento del norte, que en ocasiones confundimos en Menorca con el mistral por su enorme similitud. Se forma cuando la borrasca se centra en el norte de Italia y el anticiclón se sitúa en el SW de Francia. La tramontana puede soplar también con extremada violencia formando fuertes oleajes en el Golfo de León, alcanzando el norte de Baleares , sobre todo a Menorca y soplando con mucha intensidad frente al Cabo de Creus, en Girona.

TRAMONTANA (N): A north wind, which in Minorca sometimes is confused with the North-west wind due to its great resemblance. It is formed when the storm is in northern Italy and the anticyclone is located in the SW of France.

The north winds can also blow extremely hard forming strong waves in the Gulf of Leon, reaching the northern part of the Balearic Islands, especially Minorca and blowing extremely hard in the Cabo de Creus, Girona.

GREGAL (NE): Se produce cuando la baja presión se mueve hacia el sur de Malta. Se siente especialmente frente a las costas de Sicilia, Malta y el Mar Jónico. En España es un viento característico de las Illes Balears, común en invierno, sobre todo en febrero, aunque se puede dar también en primavera, verano y otoño. El gregal es un viento frío y seco que a menudo se muestra con fuerza de temporal, produciendo fuertes oleajes y mar de fondo.

GREGAL (NE): It occurs when low pressure moves to the south of Malta.

It is especially felt off the coast of Sicily, Malta and the Ionian Sea. In Spain it is a typical wind of the Balearic Islands, common in winter, especially in February, although it can also occur in spring, summer and autumn.

The North-eastern wind is a cold, dry wind that often comes about with the force of a squall, producing strong waves and swell.

LEVANTE (E): Suele nacer en el Mediterráneo Central a la altura de las Illes Balears. Es frecuente en marzo y de julio a octubre. Se forma cuando el Anticiclón de las Azores se extiende ovalmente sobre España o Francia y se sitúa una borrasca en el norte de África.

En función del recorrido que el viento hace sobre el mar, éste se carga más o menos de humedad, pudiendo desencadenar fuertes lluvias. En la zona occidental, el levante provoca un tiempo seco.

LEVANTE (E): It usually originates in the Central Mediterranean near the Balearic Islands. It is common in March and from July to October. It’s formed when the Azores anticyclone extends in an oval shape over Spain or France and a storm is in northern Africa. Depending on the route of the wind above the sea, it gains more or less moisture, that can trigger heavy rains. In the west, the easterly winds cause dry weather.

El Govern intenta regular el fondeo The Balearic Government Tries to Regulate Anchoring El Govern Balear estudia colocar un total de 1.228 boyas de fondeo de pago en todo el archipiélago, 262 de ellas en Menorca, con el fin de controlar el efecto que las anclas tienen en el fondo marino, en especial en las praderas de posidonia. En Menorca, según ‘Gaceta Náutica’, se crearán 9 campos de fondeo con un total de 262 boyas de pago en Algaiarens, Cala Pregonda, Cala Caldés, Es Grau, Arenal den Castell, Port d’Addaia, Illa de l’Aire, Cala Mitjana y Cala Macarella. En Mallorca se prevén 11 polígonos con un total de 485 boyas y en las Pitiüses, 13 zonas con 481 boyas. Las empresas relacionadas con la navegación deportiva han mostrado su descontento y rechazo.

Los puertos de interés general de Baleares, es decir, los de Palma, Alcúdia, Mahón, Eivissa y la Savina están disponibles en una aplicación para móviles llamada Posidonia SmartPort. SmartPort es una App para compartir información actualizada y noticias entre un puerto y su entorno: agencias (agentes marítimos, transitarios, agentes de aduanas, transportistas, etc.), cruceristas y ciudadanos. Se podrá ver el movimiento de entrada y salida de los buques, la localización de las instalaciones y la ruta de acceso, las empresas y sus datos de contacto, las noticias de la APB y la previsión meteorológica, entre otros servicios.

Tras dos intentos fallidos por el mal tiempo, el pasado 9 de mayo, el imponente MSC Armonia atracó en el Puerto de Mahón procedente del puerto francés de Marsella. Se trata del crucero más grande hasta la fecha en Menorca, un buque de 276 metros de eslora que transporta a casi 2.000 pasajeros.

l reloj del Ayuntamiento de Maó fue el primer mecanismo mecánico capaz de dar las horas que llegó a Menor-

ca, y lo hizo de la mano de uno de los gobernantes más carismáticos que ha tenido la Isla, Richard Kane, el gobernador británico que manejó los

hilos del poder entre 1712 y 1736, durante la primera de las tres dominaciones del imperio de la ‘Union Jack’ en el siglo XVIII.

Pero su ubicación actual no pudo realizarse hasta 1788, fecha en la que se reformó el edificio del Ayuntamiento y adquirió su fisonomía actual. Con anterioridad, su aspecto era mucho más austero. En 1613, la Universitat de Maó (nombre que recibían los ayuntamientos o centros de poder en la época), todavía dependiente de la Universitat General dependien-

te de Ciutadella, se trasladó a un edificio austero, radicado en el mismo lugar que el actual. En 1640, Maó se independizó de la ‘General’ y durante la dominación británica del siglo XVIII, Maó fue ganando peso militar, político y comercial. Kane dejó casi sin atribuciones a la Universitat General de Ciutadella y Maó se convirtió en el municipio más influyente de la Isla, gracias a sus formidables defensas militares, pero sobre todo a una estación logística de primer orden: el Puerto de Mahón, que se abrió al comercio al ser nombrado

puerto franco por el gobierno inglés.

En 1788, durante el breve periodo en que Menorca volvió a ser española antes de regresar al tercer dominio británico de la centuria, Maó quiso gozar de un edificio digno. La reforma se encargó al ingeniero militar Francisco Fernández de Angulo, que le dio su aspecto actual, del que destaca su entrada principal presidida por tres grandes arcadas que daban acceso a un gran vestíbulo. Sobre la arcada central se levanta la torre del reloj, el reloj de Kane, el primero no solar de toda Menorca.

UN IDÍLICO PASEO POR MAR Y POR TIERRA AN IDYLLIC ROUTE BY LAND AND SEA

El norte de Menorca ofrece un sinfín de recursos naturales y paisajísticos para disfrutar de la Isla tanto desde tierra a través del Camí de Cavalls o las rutas cicloturísticas como desde el mar, con increíbles inmersiones o con un sosegado trayecto en kayak. Uno de estos últimos es el que le ofrecemos ahora el Portum, un paseo a remo desde Son Parc a Fornells sobre aguas transparentes.

Una de las zonas más espectaculares la encontraremos al girar Punta Redonda, en el que navegaremos entre acantilados y cuevas de gran interés con Na Polida. La bahía de Fornells merece una navegación sosegada y atenta.

Muy cerca de la entrada a la Bahía de Fornell, esta es una de las cuevas más espectaculares de la Isla por sus aguas claras y brillantes. Es de fácil acceso en kayak. Antes está Na Polida, aunque no se recomienda su acceso a remo.
