Climate Activists Arrested at MoMA
On September 15th climate activist groups, including Extinction Rebellion and Climate Organizing Hub, staged protests inside and outside the MoMA. They were there to protest Henry Kravis, who, with his wife Marie-Josée, has donated large amounts to the museum. These activists share that his private equity firm, KKR, has invested in harmful projects such as the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline in Canada.

Klimt Piece Sets Record
Gustav Klimt’s Lady with a Fan set a record. Sold at Sotheby’s London for $108.4 Million, this was an auction high for the renowned Austrian artist. Setting the record for the highest public sale in Europe beating Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man I, which sold for $104.3 million in 2010. At least $80 million courtesy has been prearranged as a minimum price pledged by a third-party guarantor; the painting inspired 10 minutes of competition from three Asian bidders before it was sold to Hong Kong-based art adviser Patti Wong.
Stolen Van Goghs in Ikea Bags?
Three years after being stolen, the Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring by Van Gogh was recovered in an Ikea bag. The recovered painting is housed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring is still in good condition but has suffered; a scientific investigation is underway, and it may take months for the painting to be displayed again.
Princess Diana’s $1.1M sweater
Princess Diana’s iconic sheep sweater, which she wore at a polo match shortly after announcing her engagement to Prince Charles, just got auctioned at Soethby’s. The Warm & Wonderful sweater surpassed its estimated bid of $80,000 for a whopping $1.14 Million. This colorful jumper is a homage to the fashion legacy of Princess Diana.

SUMMER ART FAIRS
Frieze New York
Frieze New York took place in May. Hosted at The Shed, a cultural center in Hudson Yards, Frieze featured galleries from 27 countries. The artists explored themes including abstraction, indigeneity, and interpretations of history and the natural world.
Armory
Javits Centre hosts the annual art fair, The Armory Show, bringing together over 225 art galleries from more than 35 countries, New York’s largest fair The fair’s main section, Galleries, boasts exhibitions that follow distinct themes by artist duos and solo artists The remaining sections include features of large-scale installations and artwork by established, emerging, and historic artists and galleries. Notable large sales include a Lynn Drexler work sold at $800,000 through Berry Campbell Gallery and $400,000 for a Woody De Othello bronze sculpture through California based dealer Jessica Silverman. Increased interest in Armory, many galleries attest, is attributed to Frieze’s acquisition of the fair, which was announced this past July.

The theme for the fair was The Art of Nature, which, amid our climate crisis, emphasized the intersection between art and activism. Some highlights include Woody de Othello’s ceramic sculptures and paintings and Yuko Mohri’s installation and sculpture.
Art Basel: Basel
Art Basel had 284 leading galleries participating in its June Art fair in Switzerland, with 21 first-time galleries participating. Art Basel promises to showcase highquality artworks across various mediums, including paintings and sculptures, photography, and digital creations, and is known as the world’s most exclusive, high end fair experience. Notable sales include $22.5 million for a Louise Bourgeois bronze spider and $9.5 million for a Philip Guston work entitled Four Heads.
Hamptons Fine Art Fair
The Hamptons FineArt fair sold its artwork in the dark after severe rainfall and flooding this summer. Artwork worth $400 Million was saved from being imperilled by the police and fire department.
