FSC Design Award 2018, Mad & Boligs Designpris 2018 Anna Ohmsen

The FSC Design Award is a competition challenging design students to combine sustainability and wooden design. Our task was to shape and create a piece of furniture in scale 1:1. Besides winning the 1st prize, Frames also won the 1st prize by the Danish interior magazine, Mad & Bolig. Afterwards we developed a marketable prototype with Kvist Industries and today we collaborate with NORR11 as royalty designers.

Frames is a dynamic pendant lamp in FSC certified oak. By displacing the several frames that the lamp consists of, it transforms from a two-dimensional surface to a sculptural, three-dimensional object. This allows the pendant to be flat-packed for easier and more sustainable transportation. Additionally, one can create different light settings and change the expression of the design with the manual rotation. We live in a time where more lightning has become digitally adjustable. Frames is a manually counter-reaction to the digital world. In other words, Frames creates a dialogue between the user, the design and its natural material. Unfolded Frames creates an intimate and mute light setting while the light becomes sharp when flat packed.

A BATHING HOUSE | THESIS PROJECT

Project Year Status Site

Thesis project 2023 Not completed Langelinieskuret, Copenhagen

Through the development of a bathing house in the existing building, Langelinieskuret, the aim of the project is to create awareness around water as a valuable resource by facilitating it as a healing element of body and mind. To accentuate the idea of the bathhouse as a community relating to corporality and bodily health this thesis intends to form an inclusive space for every’body’ by focusing on physically disabled users and transgendered people. By questioning and reevaluating the typical bathhouse typology in order to embrace diversity and create an inclusive space, the project explores accessibility and challenges the traditional gender segregation of public baths.

Using the ideas from a research paper called ”Architectural Vocabularies: exploring the analogous relationship between light and water” which outlines that we often describe conditions of light with a language analogous to one you would use to describe the behavior of water, the project investigates how this can be used in relation to the design of spatial elements in order to create an immersive sensory experience when visiting the bathing house.

The project was exhibited at the Graduation Exhibition at The Royal Danish Academy and afterwards at Langelinieskuret by the owners, Karberghus.

The Royal Academy, Copenhagen Anna Ohmsen, Class project

A small, simple house with a boxy exterior and compact interior. Focus has been to furnish it with fixed furniture that serves multiple purposes. Due to the flexibility and mobility the interior is adaptable to specific needs and the user plays an active role in the room.

The process has consisted of using a lot of different media and working with different scales. Constructing 1:1 and to be able to move around inside the building has given a greater understanding of material and construction. To observe how people actually move and act in the house makes it possible to perceive the space completely different than you do in a small scale model.

Freelance work

2020-2023

Completed Frederiksberg, Værløse, Ålsgårde and Copenhagen Werkt, GF Vingen, EF Education First

As a freelance architect I aim to transform the client’s ideas and needs into functional and aesthetical spaces and objects. I have experience with offering architectural and interior design to other studios as well as working directly with the client. My past work includes everything from designing the facade for the bar, OPHAV, drawing a glass house for Badehotellet APS, interior design for EF Education First office in Copenhagen, designing a waste solution for the homeowner’s association, GF Vingen and working for the architecture studio, Werkt. At Werkt I have been working on several residential design projects from the initial design stage right through to completion.

At Werkt I have had meetings with clients to determine their needs and requirements before developing and presenting the project proposals in order to guide in regards of design and choice of materials. I have produced construction documents of residential housing, kitchens, bathrooms and built-in furniture for other construction professionals as well as gathered offers from suppliers and ordered building materials while adhering to budget plans. During the building process I have participated in construction monitoring on an ongoing basis

BA3 2018 Not completed Refshaleøen, Copenhagen

A building that occurs tall and narrow from one angle and seems wide from another. Playing with the width and height ratio of the building to obtain a tower appearance and simultaneously imitate the characteristics of the wide industrial warehouses on the site, Refshaleøen.

Inspired by the repetitive constructions on the site I have explored how natural light can transform a surface structured by repeating the same simple shape. A form that is determining for both the facade and the overall shape of the building.

Apartments for “artists in residence” divided into a two floor plan making space for both home and work studio.

A WATER LABORATORY | RENOVATION

Project Year Status Site Collab

MA1 2020 Not completed Knippelsbro, Copenhagen Anna Ohmsen

The project brief was to create an archive. Using the Cultural Tower at Knippelsbro we changed the function of it to contist of different water laboratories; macroalgaes, bacterias and water quality. The idea arose through the context of Knipplesbro - to make an archive that serves its location and supports the usage of the habor of Copenhagen.

The primary design focus was to create a working station, a satellite, that investigates the water. The archive is stored vertically at the stairway and showcases the work of the scientist. With the scientist in mind, making a clear programme and working schedule was the catalyst for the spatial design.

CREMATORIUM | BA PROJECT

Project Year Status Site

Bachelor project 2019 Not completed Køge Harbour

A crematorium and chapel with its facilities arranged around a spine which serves as a long transport corridor for the coffins. Focus has been to create a space that merges personal spaces for mourning with public spaces for a shared feeling of loss.

The lighting from the windows plays an important role, as it creates a transcendental environment that is conducive to emotional healing. Overhead windows along the extensive corridor highlight the different functions of the building and the placement of windows in the ritual spaces offers respect and privacy. Around the empty spaces created by the offsetting of the different facilities, full length windows blur the difference between inside and outside thus, the interior becomes part of the landscape as a comforting sanctuary to support those in their times of grief and mourning.

A CIDER BREWERY | RESTORATION

Hidden behind the train tracks a green path leads to BaneGaarden, which consists of nine old, wooden barns formerly used by DSB for storage but now functioning as a sustainable and gastronomical junction.

Inspired by the sustainable approach when producing cider naturally using locally harvested waste apples the idea is to transform one of the barns into a cider brewery accompanied by a bar. With focus on sustainability and recycling in mind the flooring is made of terrazzo from reused glass bottles and plaster marking out the division of working zones and public space.
