Facts on Dental Braces You Must Know

Dental braces are the most common method used to fix a person’s teeth. However, it can also be used to correct a child’s bite. Long-term tear and wear on a person’s teeth can be minimized by a proper bite. You can get a lot of different types of braces such as: 1. Clear braces 2. Invisible braces 3. Metal braces

A Few Things You Can Expect with Braces

The process of getting braces is basically the same no matter which type is used. Your dentist can discuss the differences with you prior to selecting which kind will be best. Yet, in most cases the dentist will recommend a specific kind depending on your dental needs. The components generally include: 1. Brackets: These hold the arch wire that moves a person’s teeth during treatment. Brackets are the squares that are attached to each tooth.

2. Ties: They are used to fasten the arch wire to the brackets on your choppers. These could be fine wires or rubber. 3. Orthodontic bands: They are cemented around your back choppers to provide an anchor for the wires. These could be stainless steel, clear or tooth-colored bands.

Clear and Ceramic Braces Your gums, jaw line and mouth changes as you get older, which is one of the contributing reasons why some adults decide to wear braces, especially to correct their bite. In the past braces were only given to young adults and teens but today many adults also get braces to correct dental issues. Invisible braces do the same job as normal braces, although, these are fitted to the backside of your choppers. They may feel a bit more uncomfortable because the wires and brackets are right next to your tongue. Clear and ceramic braces are made with clear or ceramic brackets. They are placed on the front of your choppers, which means they are seen as regular braces. However, to make it less noticeable, some people also use tooth-coloured wires. These may, however, be a lot more expensive than normal braces.

Diamond Braces These braces use brackets that are smaller than the normal metal brackets. Diamond braces can also be called mini-diamond braces and like normal metal braces they are also made out of stainless steel. Yet, one thing is for sure, they are less noticeable than normal metal braces. Plus, they are a lot more comfortable to wear because of the brackets that are a lot smaller.

Keeping Your Teeth White with Braces

There are a variety of ways to keep your teeth clean. Nonetheless, when wearing braces, it may be a bit more difficult. So, here are five steps to keep your choppers clean when wearing braces:

1. Prevent Hard and Sticky Foods Food can cause a lot of damage to teeth in general and when you have braces, there are some you have to stay clear of. The foods you have to stop yourself from eating are foods like:  

Gum Popcorn

   

Nuts Hard candies Chunky or very sticky foods such as peanut butter Taffy/caramel candies, gummy bears and chewy chocolate bars

2. You Have to Floss at Least Once Every Single Day You have to floss every single tooth including the ones that are far back every day. Push the floss between the brackets and underneath the wires to ensure you clean thoroughly. It can be used between the spaces of the braces and where the top of your teeth meets your gums.

3. After You Brush Rinse Them To make sure that all the surfaces are clean and fresh, you have to rinse your mouth with a mouth wash. Ensure your mouth rinse contains fluoride to assist in strengthening your teeth.

4. Make a Braces Kit You can use this kit throughout the day to keep your teeth clean. Pack a small bag with things like a small mirror, a little bottle of mouthwash, floss, toothpaste and a toothbrush. You can carry this with you and clean your mouth after every meal. Due to it being small, it can be kept in places like a backpack, a purse, a locker or a car.

5. Do Not Touch Your Braces Braces are there to correct your dental issues such as alignment of teeth and bite issues. There are some things a person must always consider when braces are fitted. You must not do any of the following things with your braces:    

Do not try to adjust your braces by yourself You must not bend the wires at all Do not pick at them You should not play with your braces, under any circumstances

If you notice that a bracket is loose or a wire is hurting, you should contact your dentist and make an appointment so he/she can correct any problems.
