Autism - from the Greek autos, meaning 'self, because of the selfcentred or inward-focused nature of the disorder





1912 Eugene Bleuler introduced the term 'autism' into the English language to describe a condition he found in some of his patients with schizophrenia
1943 Leo Kanner identified autism as a separate diagnosis in children, using the term 'early infantile autism'
1970s Wing and Gould identified the autism Triad of Impairment: communication, imagination and social interaction
1990s Hans Asperger's work was translated into English.In 1944 he had identified a high-functioning form of autism in young boys.




Estimates of the prevalence of ASD

2001 1 in every 170 children (Medical Research Council)
2002 1 in 250 of the population asa whole (National Autistic Society)
2006 1 in every 100 children (National Autistic Society)


Well over 500,000 people in the UK have ASD
Boys are four times more likely to have ASDthan girls 15 times as many boys as girls have been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome





Myth The behaviour of children with ASD is a result of sibling rivalry.
Truth ASD is a neurological disorder which can occur in children from a wide range of family backgrounds;children show symptoms of ASD whether there are other children in the family or not.
Myth Children with ASDarethe product of 'refrigerator mothers' who are unable to give them affection.
Truth The social impairment typical of classic autism often leads the child to reject physical demonstrations of affection and show little interest in other people.
Myth All people with ASDhave an incredible ability with maths or painting or music
Truth Only about one in ten people with ASDwould beconsidered 'savants' (having unusually high ability in a particular area, such as numbers,drawing or memory.)
