Autism - from the Greek autos, meaning 'self, because of the selfcentred or inward-focused nature of the disorder
1912 Eugene Bleuler introduced the term 'autism' into the English language to describe a condition he found in some of his patients with schizophrenia
1943 Leo Kanner identified autism as a separate diagnosis in children, using the term 'early infantile autism'
1970s Wing and Gould identified the autism Triad of Impairment: communication, imagination and social interaction
1990s Hans Asperger's work was translated into English.In 1944 he had identified a high-functioning form of autism in young boys.
Estimates of the prevalence of ASD
2001 1 in every 170 children (Medical Research Council)
