Situation Report The war in Ukraine has created the fastest growing refugee crisis since World War II. Nearly 12 million people are now displaced – an estimated 7.1 million are displaced inside Ukraine and 4.7 million are now refugees who have crossed into neighbouring countries.

At Ukraine’s borders with Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova, people are arriving with only what they can carry.

UNHCR estimates that another 13 million are stranded in hard-to-reach areas in Ukraine, directly affected by the conflict and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

As the crisis continues, all 7.5 million children in Ukraine have had their education disrupted.

It is estimated that 30-40% of refugees are children are under the age of 14, with high numbers of unaccompanied children being reported. This requires extensive child protection and safeguarding services in refugee influx areas. There is a history of child trafficking in the region, which could rise in the current emergency.

Within Ukraine, internally displaced people are living in crowded private apartments or shelters. There is a lack of access to basic services such as food, water, sanitation and heating. There is an increased risk of gender based violence due to overcrowding and a lack of police oversight.

Situation Report

There are numerous media reports of indiscriminate aerial and ground-based bombing in urban and populated areas, targeting of humanitarian corridors, and other International Humanitarian Law violations.

Immediate threats to life are occurring in conflict areas within Ukraine, particularly for civilians unable to flee or who are in situations of encirclement or besiegement

by Russian forces.

The WHO has highlighted the risks of excess death from common illnesses, due to disruption in services, and acute maternal, new-born and child illnesses, as well as the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19, measles, polio, TB, and HIV. These include mental health care, due to “significant stress due to acute conflict”, and conflict-related trauma and injuries, exacerbated by lack of access to health facilities due to insecurity.

How donations to the Ukraine Appeal are distributed The first tranche of funds were distributed to EAA members in the week commencing 18th April 2022. A second tranche will be distributed in mid May 2022.

Funds were distributed to responding members based on a pre-agreed allocation formula. This means the donations are distributed directly to the EAA members best able to help, representing an extremely efficient method of getting your donation to where its needed most.

Given the complexity and scale of this emergency, this response requires a combined effort across international aid organisations, local first responders and community groups, and government responses around the world including those who have agreed to receive refugees from Ukraine.

Food and Shelter People arriving at border processing centres with only what they can carry. Through your support, Emergency Action Alliance members are providing food, temporary shelter and longer term accommodation.

Our members are providing:

Food Security • Setting up kitchens • Providing hot meals • Food packs for travelling

Shelter and Accommodation • Emergency shelter at border crossings and towns • Sleeping mats, tarpaulin thermal blankets, sleeping bags • Solar lamps, winter kits • Arranging emergency accommodation with host families •S afe spaces for vulnerable people (unaccompanied and separated children, women at risk and other people with specific needs) •A dapting and rehabilitating buildings that can offer safe, dignified shelter to displaced families

Emergency logistics and services The complexity and scale of the Ukraine emergency requires a broad, muti-faceted and agile response. As the crisis escalates, so does the need for resources. Emergency Action Alliance members are working with their partners to provide a range of essential services both within Ukraine and in bordering countries, including: • Setup and management of reception centres • Safe transportation to and from centres •A ssist with ongoing travel arrangements to countries receiving Ukraine refuges • Providing travel packs for ongoing journeys • Processing and screening of documents • Legal assistance • Transport and storage of core relief items • Expansion of warehouse capabilities

Psycho-social support People are arriving at refugee centres afraid and distressed after their harrowing escape from Ukraine. They face an uncertain future and are afraid for friends and family they have left behind. With your help, our members are providing vital psychosocial support, including specialist support for children and young people.

Lifesaving medical aid With your help our members are providing life-saving medical aid both within Ukraine and on the borders. Many refugees are visiting the temporary medical clinics with injuries from their journey, cold and flu symptoms, or have run out of their medication.
