Our tiny island of Comino This is a small island between Gozo and Malta which only measures 2.5 by 1.5 kilometers. One can go by ferry or a private boat. It is a paradise for snorkelers, divers and windsurfers. Its main attraction is the Blue Lagoon and its heavenly sandy beaches such as Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay. It was once reportedly the hideout of pirates and smugglers, and its remoteness saw it used as a place of isolation for cholera and plague victims in the early 19th century.

Go to St John’s Co-Cathedral & Upper Barrakka Gardens The Cathedral is one of the main landmarks of the islands. Apart from its rich Baroque art and relics, the Co Cathedral also holds impressive Baroque frescos, ornate marble floors, three-dimensional statues,

carved stone walls and breath-taking vaulted ceilings decorated by the well-known Italian Baroque artist, Mattia Preti. I also homes one of the most internationally recognised works by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known as ‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist’ (1608).

The Upper Barrakka Gardens are only a few minutes away from the Cathedral. Along with the lower Barrakka Gardens, they offer a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the three cities. In the park there are several monuments and memorials to a number of prominent people.

Visit the Megalithic temples There are several prehistoric temples, six of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, built during three distinct periods approximately between 3600 BC and 2500 BC on the island country of Malta. The temples are a testament to a tradition of prehistoric architecture that is totally unique to this part of the world. They were made using large limestone blocks. Mnajdra and Hagar Qim are surely not to miss. A large protective tent now encloses them to prevent any further destruction from the elements. The temple complex at Gganjita, Gozo could be said to be the most important for a number of reasons.

Travel back in time at Fort St Elmo, Fort St. Angelo When the Knights arrived on the island in 1530, the Fort became the seat of the Grand Master of the Order. The fort gained its legendary status from the resistance of the Knights during the 3 month siege.

In 1565 during the Great Siege, Fort St Elmo was a guard to both the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. This small fort managed to repel a month of attack from the Ottomans at the outset of the Great Siege. When the Siege was over, the victorious nights rebuilt the fort and strengthened its defenses.

Museum of Archeology, National Aquarium The Museum of archeology exhibits stone tools dating back from 5200BC, prehistoric figurines found either in burial context or above ground temples, a temple model from Ta’ Hagrat and Phoenician amulets. One can also find the unique icon Sleeping Lady which was found at the Hypogeum.

The National Aquarium is an experience throughout Malta’s underwater life with several fish tanks and species as well as Tropical Oceans with spectacular underwater scenes.
