Creative Learning Guide 2015 Welcome to our new programme of Creative Learning opportunities. There is something for everyone in this exciting selection of courses and workshops so we hope you will be tempted to try something new as well as returning to familiar friends.

Our new gallery is moving towards its target completion date. We hope to minimise any disruption and noise pollution so that you can enjoy your courses to the full. By the autumn there will be 3 beautiful new gallery spaces to enhance your enjoyment, offering you the opportunity to see some of the most interesting and exciting artists both locally and nationally.

Visual art The art of pastel drawing

Mondays, 10am - 1pm 20 April – 6 July (not 4 or 25 May) Tutor: Geoff Beasley £128 / £65 for 10 sessions Creatively explore the medium of pastel drawing. Study traditional and modern methods of pastel drawing in a variety of genres.

Tutor: Steph Knowles For the curious, the adventurous, the out of practise and those who simply want more drawing in their lives. No particular experience necessary.

Abstract watercolour Tuesdays, 1.30pm – 4.30pm 2 June – 7 July Tutor: Lois Gardner Sabet £70 / £40 for 6 sessions Work with the basics of colour theory, using watercolours to develop varied expressive brush strokes that will lead to compositions and completed paintings.

Painting problems: windows and reflections Wednesdays, 10am – 3pm 15 April - 13 May Tutor: Jenny Wright £100 / £50 for 5 sessions Using the theme of windows and reflections, experimental paintings will be produced in various media in a supportive environment.

Build up a body of work to refine your ideas. You will be encouraged to keep a sketch book to develop your work thoroughly.

Thursdays, 11am - 12.30pm (fortnightly) Tutor: Diane Hall £50 / £25 for 6 sessions Join with other artists to develop your critical skills and become more confident in your ability to develop your own style. These friendly, supportive classes are devoted entirely to discussion and criticism of work done at home. The six sessions are based around a focus and specific creative problems set by the tutor.

You will be required to work outside of the class using your own materials, resulting in a number of pieces using a variety of materials and approaches.

Arts Award inspires young people aged 5 – 25 to develop their artistic talents and communication and leadership skills. It is creative, recognised and accessible, and can be achieved at five levels: Discover – an introductory award, and four accredited awards, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold (Gold carries 35 UCAS points).

We deliver all levels of Arts Award through regular groups, specific projects, drop-in and summer schools.

Our drop-in sessions run in 6 week blocks, with participants attending for the number of blocks they need to complete different levels of the awards.

Next blocks will take place on: 14 April – 19 May 9 June – 14 July Book one block for £42 or two for £80.

Explore a repertoire of songs in a wide variety of styles and traditions, including musicals, popular classics, folk songs, part songs and comedy items. The singing is mainly in unison, with some simple part-singing, mainly learnt by ear, depending on the ability and number of participants. No musical knowledge necessary.

Jazz performance Mondays, 7.15pm - 9.15pm 13 April – 29 June (not 4 or 25 May) Tutor: Richard Everitt £70 / £35 for 10 sessions Gain confidence in your ability to improvise and develop your performance skills through a better understanding of scales, modes and chords. Guitar Wednesdays Tutor: Ketan Patel £58 for 10 sessions Learn in a friendly group setting with a strong emphasis on ensemble playing.

No previous musical knowledge is required for either of the beginners’ level courses.

Classical guitar course: You will need to bring your own nylon strung guitar, footstool and course book –please ask us for details. The improvers’ level is suitable for players with approximately two years’ experience who can already read music.

Acoustic guitar course: You will need to bring a guitar plectrum and preferably a steel strung guitar. The improvers’ course is suitable for players with approximately 12 months experience including an understanding of basic rhythms in music notation.

Originally practised by women to prepare the body for pregnancy and childbirth, this dance form tones the abdomen and lower back. Designed for complete beginners, this course taught by a professional belly dancer will really enhance your dancing skills.

For beginners 6.30pm – 7.30pm Get on your feet and have a go at this fun, energetic and exciting dance style. Improve your health, fitness and wellbeing. For adults interested in learning the basic skills, this informal course led by an experienced dance facilitator requires no specialist clothing or footwear.

This course covers all the basics, including hooping on the waist, before moving on to ‘off body’ tricks, hooping on different parts of the body and learning to dance with the hoop. Great exercise, fun and easier than you may think. Hula hoops provided.

Enjoy Latin dance in its many forms and explore some of its more skilled aspects in styles such as salsa, merengue, cha cha cha, cumbia and reggaeton. This course is aimed at those with some experience of Latin American dance.

Add a cheque for the total made payable to ‘University of Leicester’ to Box Office, Embrace Arts, Richard Attenborough centre, PO Box 138, Lancaster Road, Leicester LE1 7HA.

Bookings open Monday 16 February 10am We do not charge a booking fee, however you book.

Access Embrace Arts is fully accessible to disabled people. We have: induction loop systems. wheelchair accessible toilets.

Box office open 9.15am – 7pm, (closed Bank Holidays, 2 – 7 April).

Basic materials are provided but there may be some additional costs on certain practical courses.

Booking policy Bookings are dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis and only on receipt of the full fee. You are advised to book early.

If the course / workshop you want is full, we can add your name to a waiting list for cancellations.

Age guidance Generally our courses / workshops are most suited to those aged 16+ years, unless otherwise stated. Younger people may be able to attend at the discretion of the tutor.

Cancellations When a course / workshop is cancelled due to low numbers you will be given a full refund. Please give us at least seven days notice by email before the course / workshop starts.
