Theatre and events Michael Pinchbeck & Ollie Smith: Solo Saturday 4 May at Leicester’s Guildhall. 11am – 3.55pm Each performance lasts 10 minutes £2, 2 audience members per performance – please book your time slot in advance. Suitable for ages 14+ An intimate and interactive performance inspired by Maurice Ravel’s extraordinary violin piece, Tzigane – a jazz-infused classical composition for a true virtuoso. Taking place in Leicester’s historic Guildhall, this poetic and poignant 10-minute experience follows two intertwined narratives and casts its two audience members in the key roles, from the moment the music starts to the curtain call. You play the violinist or the composer, enacting the true story of how this piece of music came to be. The Guildhall, Guildhall Lane, Leicester LE1 5FQ
The Death Show Friday 7 June, 7pm – 8pm £10/ £5 concession Suitable for ages 14+ Death. A bit grim, isn’t it? Morbid, macabre and even unmentionable… but does it have to be that way? Drawn together by their shared fear of death, Lucy Nicholls and Antonia Beck invite you to embark on a journey of discovery, contemplation and courage. Celebrate your own mortality, laugh, cry, stick two fingers up at the Grim Reaper and discover why talking about death is ultimately life-affirming.

Theatre and events A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad) Silent Uproar Friday 14 June, 7pm – 8pm Pay What You Think Suitable for ages 14+ This hilarious cabaret musical explains how it’s OK not to be OK. It’s joyful, buoyant, gleeful, slightly silly, sugar coated, unrelenting and completely super happy! (Except for all the bits about depression). Written by Olivier award winner Jon Brittain (Rotterdam & Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho) with music by Matthew Floyd Jones (Frisky and Mannish), the show won a 2017 Fringe First and the Musical Theatre Review Best Musical. Co-produced by Hull UK City of Culture 2017, the tour has been made possible with the support of Arts Council England, house touring network, Hull City Council, New Diorama Theatre, Hull NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and Hull Truck Theatre.

Journeys of Destiny Ava Hunt Theatre Friday 21 June, 7pm – 8pm £5, £15 Family of Four Suitable for ages 8+ We mark National Refugee Week with the inspiring true story of a young Syrian refugee, Saad AlKassab who fled to Australia in 2014. Young performers will appear alongside the professional actors, using original music, song, verbatim accounts and their own stories about going from the known to the unknown. This exciting theatre piece explores migration and immigration, and the emotional resilience needed for transition and change.

Martin Figura “a revelation – funny, sharp and on top form” (The Observer) is an award-winning poet, currently touring a show about, amongst other things, raising a daughter with Down’s Syndrome. The Anatomical Venus centres on women and otherness and is Helen Ivory’s fifth collection. ‘Children of the Asylum’ is a publication, edited by WORD!’s own Pam Thompson, responding to case study accounts of children placed in asylums 150 years ago. Prior to the event an exhibition of work responding to Children of the Asylum will preview upstairs in the Balcony Gallery.
Liv Torc and Sammy Nour Thursday 29 August 7.30pm – 9.30pm £7 / £4 concession A Radio 4 slam winner and former Bard of Exeter, performance poet Liv runs the spoken word stage at WOMAD festival and The Hip Yak Poetry School. Treat your family to exceptional theatre Mathilda and the Orange Balloon The DH Ensemble Sunday 12 May, 1pm – 1.45pm and 3pm – 3.45pm £5, £15 Family of Four Suitable for ages 3 – 8 We’re on a journey of self-discovery and expression with Mathilda, a little grey sheep in a little grey world. Her herd is content to munch clovers, but Mathilda’s mind is full of questions. When an orange balloon makes a surprise appearance on the farm, Mathilda learns how, with a little imagination and a big open mind, anything is possible! This delightful show features a diverse cast of Deaf and hearing actors, and is welcoming and fully accessible to Deaf and hearing children and families through the use of spoken English, sign language, and creative captions and animation.

We provide FREE opportunities for children and young people aged 0 – 18 with complex needs and disabilities to be creative and take part in the arts. Our workshop and theatre programme takes place at weekends and holidays. We provide one-to-one respite care by trained professionals and have disabled parking bays and a Changing Places facility

Is it for me? Children on our programme experience a range of disabilities that without additional support, make it difficult for them to participate in the arts. We shape our programme for the individual needs of our members, including PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties); Autism and ADHD; auditory, speech and visual impairments; Down’s Syndrome; rarer conditions and SWAN (‘Syndrome without a name’).

Social events
Our workshops are limited to small groups of 6 young people and tailored to the individual needs of our participants. Our leaders and performers are skilled artists experienced at working with young people with disabilities.
We also host friendly supportive social events, such as our popular Sensory Garden Party, which takes place in the summer holiday at the University of Leicester’s Botanic Gardens.
Relaxed Performances Our ‘relaxed performances’ are subtly altered to make it easier for everyone to attend, such as: having the house lights up; editing out loud bangs and dramatic lighting changes; keeping theatre doors open. We foster a friendly, supportive atmosphere – and welcome all noises!

Aaron Williamson Gallery 1 (Inspiration Archives) Galleries 2 & 3 (Retrospective) Saturday 11 May – Sunday 14 July Suitable for everyone Exhibition opening: Friday 10 May from 5.30pm Over the last twenty-five years renowned British artist Aaron Williamson has created over 300 performances, videos, installations and publications in Britain, Europe, Japan, China, Australia, American, South America, Canada and many other countries around the world. Willamson’s eclectic practice spans performance, objects, place and space, informed by his experience of becoming deaf and by a politicised, yet humorous, sensibility towards disability. This new exhibition, Williamson’s largest solo showing to date, features a brand new project ‘Inspiration Archives’, which has been commissioned by Attenborough Arts. Inspiration Archives brings together never before seen collections of objects, artefacts, ephemera, film footage and photography, which document the lives of several historically overlooked personalities. Characters include; Deaf wrestler Cain in Chains; Charlotte Waterton,
granddaughter of zoological illustrator William Waterton, and paraplegic traveller and explorer ‘Parachute Susan’ O’ Sullivan, alongside various other inspirational historic figures of differing professions and backgrounds. To accompanying the ‘Inspirational Archives’ installation, Attenborough Arts Centre and Aaron Williamson have curated a retrospective of past solo and collaborative projects including film, performance, objects, text and photography.
Lucy Jones: Awkward Beauty Galleries 1, 2 and 3 Saturday 27 July – Sunday 6 October Suitable for everyone Exhibition opening: Friday 26 July from 5.30pm Lucy Jones is renowned for both her imposing, challenging self-portraits, and for her expressionistic landscapes. Her landscape paintings evolve from hard-earned studies made while in the landscape, placing a board on the ground to make either a drawing or a watercolour. In contrast to this her self-portrait works are critical examinations, and reaffirmations of self. Encompassing strength, humanity and wit, they are statements as much about the human condition as her own. Jones studied at Camberwell School of Art, followed by the Royal College of Art, where she won a Rome scholarship in 1982.

We’re really excited about this riveting experience of live music, film and dance. Dastaan – meaning a ‘story’ or ‘story of our life’ – takes place in two parts. First, we’ll be taken on a musical journey through India, Persia and Wales, led by worldrenowned tabla maestro and composer Sarvar Sabri. The second half is a beautiful film featuring Persian calligraphy by Mehdi Jamali and poignant dance from renowned ballet dancer Marion Tait CBE (Birmingham Royal Ballet). Supported by Birmingham Royal Ballet and The British Library.
