Honour your place in our history and future

People choose to write their wills at different times of their life and we appreciate that it is a very personal matter. If you are able to provide for your school, alongside family and other causes you value, you’ll be enriching the opportunities, experience and enjoyment of future generations of Emanuel pupils and the local community.

With as little as one sentence of bequest language in your will, you can enable the school to provide innovative teaching and learning, to widen access and to offer the very best learning opportunities and facilities for our pupils – both now and in the years to come.

We invite you to consider making a gift in your will to Emanuel School.

Welcome from the Headmaster

We are very proud of our school, its rich heritage, sustained academic success and its genuine sense of community.

In recent years, Emanuel has become one of the most popular and successful co-educational day schools in the country. We are delighted by this and hope that you are proud of your school.

Beyond the rich academic life, our school has a thriving co-curricular offering and seeks to be the very best pastoral provider in London. We also run an outreach programme that supports over 1000 local primary school children a month; and funded places campaigns that have ensured Emanuel remains a great place for social mobility, giving opportunity to young people from all walks of life.

Our vision for the school requires financial support and can only be achieved with the generosity and endorsement of our alumni and friends. A legacy gift is one of the most influential ways in which you can contribute to the future success of the school. It is a thank you, an endorsement of your experience and a commitment to the future of your school.

I hope you will consider becoming a member of the 1594 Club and supporting the next generation of Emanuel School pupils.

Our history

In 1594, Lady Anne Dacre established the school with a bequest of £300 to provide an education for 10 boys and 10 girls. Today, Emanuel continues to benefit from the generosity and foresight of philanthropists whose legacy gifts provide future generations of pupils with a transformative education rooted in academic and co-curricular excellence as well as strengthen our commitment to the wider community.

Throughout the centuries, many Emanuel School children have received scholarships and bursaries. For boys educated during the Grammar School years (1944-1977), Emanuel provided a free education and pupils came from diverse social and economic backgrounds. For the latter part of the 20th century, even when Emanuel started to charge

fees again, the Government’s Assisted Places Scheme continued to support children whose parents had only a modest income. For many who attended Emanuel during this time, the experience was truly lifechanging and many went on to university – often the first in their family to do so – and progress to successful careers.

Leaving a gift honours your place in our history. It is an opportunity for you to give back to Emanuel and leave a lasting commitment to the future of the school beyond your lifetime. Your support allows us to continue to widen access and ensure Emanuel remains a leading coeducational school open to all. Unlike many other independent schools, Emanuel does not have a large endowment fund so we value legacy and lifetime gifts to help secure our future and that of future generations.

Like most of my contemporaries, “winning” a place at Emanuel was so coveted. Most of us were from backgrounds whose parents could never have afforded to send us to a fee-paying school of Emanuel’s standing. So most of us counted Emanuel’s education and broader grounding as the greatest opportunity we could ever have had at that early stage of our lives. For all of us it forged abiding standards, character, scholarship, camaraderie, discipline and unbelievable pride in ourselves and the school. It was the best launching pad we could ever have wished for!

Supporting the future

We appreciate thoughtful legacy donations of any size and commit to ensuring every gift is used carefully to support the long-term vision of Emanuel.

You may wish to invest in one of the following areas:

Teaching and learning (unrestricted)

This is the most helpful type of legacy as it allows us to direct your gift to the highest priority area for the school at the time we receive your gift. Unrestricted funding ensures financial stability and increases our ability to respond when situations change, making it easier to provide innovative teaching and learning practices and opportunities.

Fully funded places

We aim to develop a robust bursary programme ensuring an Emanuel School education remains viable and accessible to all, helping to diversify our community, increase opportunity and foster talent.

With the challenges of the rising cost of education and an everevolving future, bursaries will become more important than ever before.

Our bursaries provide life-enhancing experiences and opportunities to pupils whose families would not otherwise have the means for them to attend Emanuel.

I am conscious that I am from the ‘Golden Generation’ who enjoyed a free education at Emanuel and support at university. Accordingly, I want to help the youngsters of today, whose personal circumstances might otherwise prevent them from experiencing the tremendous opportunities that Emanuel offers. The ‘free places’ bursary scheme is therefore a project I relate to and am delighted to support, especially as it reflects the desires that drove Emanuel’s founders to establish the school in the late 16th century.

Improving our facilities

Capital gifts are not just investments in infrastructure, but an investment in our people and their futures. Inspiring facilities help transform our educational offering across the curriculum, further our award-winning outreach initiatives, provide even greater access and ensure we meet the needs of pupils today and for generations to come.

Our ambitious plans embody the school’s desire to be outstanding across all areas – recognising our heritage and the evolving needs of our fully co-ed population.

Recognising your gift

The 1594 Club

All legacy donors are entitled to become members of the Club a nd will receive special communications, have access to schoolwide events and will be invited to a 1594 Club event hosted by the school every year. This is an opportunity to say thank you, to hear about the latest developments at Emanuel and to meet other members whose lives have been touched by the school.

The Founder’s Circle

If you would like to also support the school during your lifetime, please consider becoming a Founder’s Circle member.

Taking inspiration from the school’s origins in 1594, the new Founder’s Circle recognises the generosity of donors who make an annual gift of £1,594 or more (or whose regular monthly gift exceeds £1,594 per year).

Circle members are named on our website and in our Donor Impact Report and will receive special communications and invitations to selected events.

Regular gifts allow us to plan for the future with confidence. Often people underestimate the value of collective giving. For example, it takes just 14 people to join the Founder’s Circle to fund an entire place for a year.

Please complete the form online by scanning the QR code below or fill in the enclosed donation form to become a member of the Founder’s Circle.

My legacy to Emanuel

“It really made sense to me to mention Emanuel School in my will. After all, without the support and encouragement of teachers at the school, none of the things I’ve achieved in my life would have been possible.”

“I want others to have the same kind of opportunities that Emanuel offered me; for this reason I am leaving a legacy to the school so that Emanuel can continue to provide a great 'all encompassing' education and experience to boys and girls in years to come. Emanuel nurtures young people, providing wonderful opportunities to excel academically, artistically and socially; I hope that my legacy will enable the school to continue in this Noble Aim.”

“We were taught the value of a lifelong appetite for knowledge, learning and understanding; how to be good citizens and serve our communities. But it’s also about friendships. To have done things together in the past and to want to go on doing so now and in the future is what makes a community and it is what makes Emanuel such a wonderful, positive life-long and life-changing example of a great community.

Teachers gain great satisfaction and sense of self-fulfilment from seeing their students flourish, growing in skill, learning, judgement and confidence. Helping a student financially enables a donor to share in that exhilarating feeling of satisfaction, of “simple duty done.”
