Emanuel in the Community - Dec2024

Page 1

Emanuel School is very much part of its local community as evidenced by our diverse and ever-developing partnership and outreach programmes. Since 2017, our ambitions have grown exponentially, and we are delighted that so many Emanuel pupils and local young people are benefiting from enriching experiences at our school and beyond.

Our aim is to foster aspiration and social mobility through education so that all young people in our local community, regardless of circumstances, are able to make the best of themselves.

This publication provides a flavour of what goes on beyond the classroom and the positive difference we make.

You will see that this is very much a team effort, with parents, colleagues, governors, Old Emanuels and pupils, at this school and others, playing their part.

EDUCATION EQUALITY

Our work with partner schools permeates every aspect of school life.

Pupils and staff are actively encouraged to volunteer – staff serve as school governors; run Drama, Art, STEM and Creative Writing workshops; facilitate Ascent, our Summer term Saturday programme, and GCSE booster courses. Pupils volunteer on weekends and school holidays as leaders and teaching assistants for Emanuel and partner school programmes. Parents volunteer as minibus drivers, readers and governors at our partner schools.

We run Year 6 enrichment sessions with partner schools to strengthen our

collective sense of community and broaden experiences. We share careers events, Oxbridge and medical school interview preparation, inspirational speakers, author visits and more.

Since launching Primary Ambitions, one of our core programmes, we have developed a partnership network of 25 primary schools, 7 state secondary schools and numerous community organisations and have offered over 25,000 hours of education, sport or cultural opportunities to local children and young people.

Each year, over 6,500 children and young adults participate in our community programmes.

CORE PROGRAMMES

PRIMARY AMBITIONS

Primary Ambitions is our flagship Lower Sixth-led primary focused enrichment programme.

Our pupils plan and prepare their teaching sessions with support of Emanuel teachers acting as supervisors. They then deliver their materials to groups of 15 Year 6 pupils from local state primary partner schools.

We offer 18 different subjects including swimming lessons in the pool, Design & Technology in the DT suite and Biodiversity

in our wonderful Eco garden. These are in addition to Clay Creatures Art workshops, Drama skills sessions, DJing, Filmmaking and Robotics.

The programme’s success stems from mutual benefit – our partner school pupils are engaged in their learning, build confidence, resilience and friendships; and Emanuel pupils develop their leadership, facilitation and teamworking skills.

“It has been a joy, as a teacher, to see how much both the students running the workshops, and the Year 6 pupils taking part, have enjoyed themselves. It has been a really valuable experience for my Year 6 students, who have been utterly engaged and inspired by the programme!”

Goldfinch Primary

“Our students have blossomed into poets, swimmers, gymnasts, scientists, technicians, and so much more. Primary Ambitions has ignited passions and talents they never knew they had.”

St George’s CE Primary

In the Summer term, we run Ascent, a Saturday booster programme for 35 of our primary school partners’ Year 5 pupils. Sessions are led by Emanuel staff supported by Emanuel pupil volunteers.

Ascent’s aim is two-fold: it supports Year 5 disadvantaged children who are either failing to meet national standards in the core subjects of Literacy and Maths; or are highly able and in need of further stretch and challenge. The majority of the children attending are on free school meals (2023: 100%; 2024: 83%)

We supplement the core subjects with interactive, hands-on Science sessions and cocurricular lessons including Robotics, Art and Sport.

100% of parents stated children are more confident 98% of parents noted that attending the Ascent programme was a positive experience for their child. 93% of parents stated the Acsent programme furthered their child’s understanding of the topics.

“Last year, four pupils from our Year 5 cohort successfully applied to join the Ascent Programme. All of the participants benefitted academically, as demonstrated in their ongoing achievements and progress in Year 6. We have also seen these pupils develop their general confidencethey now have a stronger ability to share their ideas effectively in class.”

GCSE BOOSTERS

The GCSE booster programme includes up to 45 pupils from Westminster City School and St John Bosco College over the October and Easter holidays.

Topics include English, Maths and the three sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We run sessions catering for pupils in need of stretch and challenge and those in need of additional support.

Sessions are run by Emanuel School staff. The sessions are high impact – the pupils are enthusiastic about our teaching approach and the opportunity to consolidate their

learning. 70% of last year’s cohort achieved their predicted grades or higher in English and Maths.

Our 2023 cohort reported an increase in self-efficacy and reduced test anxiety. All participants either agreed or strongly agreed that they felt more confident and that the content helped them prepare for their exams after attending the programme.

“In depth explanations and learning more efficient problemsolving techniques were incredibly helpful.”

FULLY FUNDED PLACES

The success of our Giant Strides campaign has enabled us to increase the number of fully funded and fee assisted places we offer. We provide fully funded places for 10+, 11+ and 16+ entry. On average, our bursaries cover 80% of school fees.

Students on fully funded places

Bursary students achieve strong academic results, in line with their peers.

In Summer 2024:

72% of GCSE grades secured by bursary students were 8-9.

78% of A level grades achieved by bursary students were A*-B.

“Bursary support has been so helpful throughout my time at Emanuel, from contributing to my first school uniform to my leaver’s hoodie, as well as trips, such as a choir tour to Prague.

Now 8 years later, the surprise I felt on opening my offer letter has dissipated, but my gratitude has multiplied, having experienced the nurturing and passionate teaching at Emanuel, without which I don’t think I would have received a place to study Medicine at Oxford. The experiences unlocked by my bursary, not just in terms of academics, but also all the co-curricular activities beyond the classroom, have widened my perspectives, and the encouragement and support here has shaped me into a more confident and optimistic person.”

ENRICHMENT

Our aim is to inspire pupils in our local community as well as our own and to decrease community disadvantage. In addition to Primary Ambitions, we provide a range of enrichment opportunities for our partner primary and secondary schools.

YEAR 6 ENRICHMENT

Our partnership with St George’s CE and John Burns primaries continues to thrive and we regularly run enrichment sessions for pupils from their Year 6 cohorts along with both of our Year 6 classes.

Children engage in a variety of activities where they work together in small groups. Children have recently travelled off-site to High Ashhurst, an outdoor learning facility, where they participated in a variety of team problem solving activities; St Paul’s Cathedral where they enjoyed a workshop and climbed to the top of the highest dome; and the

THEATRE, TALKS AND CAREERS

We regularly invite partner schools to join us for musical and drama productions. Recently, primary school children attended a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ showcase followed by a Q and A session. It was a great opportunity for our pupils to perform for an audience and the primary school children loved it.

Our partner school pupils attend our careers’ fairs and networking events; author presentations – Abi Elpinstone and Robin Stevens were recent highlights - visiting inspirational speakers; practice Oxbridge and medical school interviews.

Houses of Parliament, including a tour and their very own debate.

The enrichment activities with our partner primary schools are a wonderful way for our local schools’ community to work together, break down barriers and make new friendships. The programme is an invaluable part of our community programme for our Year 6 pupils.

PARTNER SCHOOL SPORTS

We host termly 7-a-side football tournaments for Year 4 pupils from our partner schools. Fulham FC Foundation, one of our community partners, joins us to run the tournaments’ Typically, eight teams participate in trophy and plate competitions. Our aim is for children to have a positive experience and to have the opportunity – which they rarely have – to represent their schools.

Football tournaments are a regular feature within our community partnership calendar. In addition, we provide over 2000 pupilhours of swimming over the year for

multiple primary and secondary schools and offer Rowing and Rugby workshops for Westminster City School, one of our fellow Foundation schools.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Emanuel students are actively involved in charitable fundraising, which exemplifies their focus on looking beyond the school’s boundaries to help the lives of others in our community and beyond.

Each year, the Charity Committee, composed of students from all year groups, shortlists charities that they would like to support. In addition to a UK-based charity, we support our partnership schools in Tamil Nadu, India.

Our students plan, organise, and coordinate events to raise funds for the chosen charities, whilst always looking for creative ways to fundraise. In addition to raising funds, we support local community partners through student and parent- supported collections of

much-needed items such as food, clothing and books. Each House choses a charity at the start of the year and there is a competition to see who can raise the most money.

One of the partners that we support is the Ace of Clubs, a day centre providing aid for the homeless in our local community. We hold an annual sleepout in aid of the charity to raise funds and awareness in addition to support provided throughout the year with food and clothing donations and Christmas cards.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Each academic year we typically have 130 students working towards their Bronze DofE Certificate, 90 towards Silver; and 20 towards Gold. In addition to completing physical and skills components and an expedition, each student volunteers in their community every week for up to 12 months.

5000+ hours of community service

£23,500 social value

240+ pupils participating each year

Students volunteer for many local organisations including local sports clubs, local primary schools, neighbourhood associations, park services and church groups.

SOCIAL INCLUSION

Emanuel School is committed to ensuring that equality, diversity and inclusion are at the very heart of our culture and community. We are committed to ensuring that every member of the Emanuel community – our students, staff, alumni and wider community –feels welcomed, respected, valued and supported.

ARCHER ADVISORY GROUP

The Archer Advisory Group is an important voice within Emanuel School. The group is made up of school staff and pupils of different ages and backgrounds. Its task is to review the school’s curriculum, structures and population, through the lenses of the diverse members of the Emanuel community.

The advisory group’s activities have resulted in changes within the school and beyond. As an example, the group organised a CPD event for teachers of the five Foundation schools to build understanding and awareness of the use of language within a culture of diversity and inclusion.

PRISM AND PRIDE

PRISM is Emanuel’s LGBTQ+ pupil voice group. Prism meets weekly to discuss topics of queer culture, including talks on political figures, book and film reviews. The society is run by pupils in the Upper Sixth who are supported by staff, and is open to those in Year 9 and above.

The PRISM committee is also in charge of organising Emanuel’s annual Pride Week which first began in 2020. Pride Week aims to celebrate diversity and difference and help increase our understanding of the LGBTQ+ community.

“For Pride Week, we offered a wide range of activities including educating pupils on LGBTQ+ topics, raising money and hosting fun activities. The week was a great success and we achieved our goals of creating something new to support Pride, while raising money for our selected charity.”

WIDENING ACCESS FOR CHILDREN

AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

We work with Fulham FC Foundation and Wayfarers Flyerz to offer children and young people with disabilities the opportunity to play football and hockey on site weekly throughout the year.

Pan Disability football attendance has tripled since 2019/20 Participants have per season

42% of participants are from ethnically diverse backgrounds

The goals of both programmes are not only to promote a love of sport and physical activity but also to improve the participants’ physical health and mental wellbeing and to reduce social isolation. The Flyerz programme is supported by Emanuel staff and pupil volunteers.

“Emanuel School is doing great work in the community. I have been pleased to learn more about activities that it

We work closely with Park House School. part of the Beyond Autism Schools network. Lower Sixth pupils run weekly enrichment sessions on Friday afternoons at Park House. Activities are fun, hands-on and build confidence and social skills. We also provide weekly access, with a lifeguard, to our swimming pool which has proved a terrific success.

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY

In addition to school partnerships, we are immersed in our local community.

We work with local community partners to address local needs. These include Regenerate Rise, Fulham FC Foundation and Wayfarers Flyerz that we have highlighted elsewhere. We also work with the Children’s Book Project and HMP Wandsworth to distribute books to those who need them. We have collected and rehomed thousands of much needed books.

We have supported refugees through work with West London Welcome and our own initiatives providing funds, clothing, and support.

Our Lower and Middle School pupils assemble Christmas hampers for single-

parent families in our local area through our partnership with the charity CHEER. Each class collects wonderful, much needed staples as well as Christmas treats and presents for each member of their assigned families. We typically collect for 72 families in our local area each year.

Our Sixth form pupils fundraise and collect food and much needed items for a local homeless day centre, Ace of Clubs. We have worked closely with the charity for over 10 years. They provide transformative support for homeless, vulnerable, and otherwise marginalised people in our area. Ace of Clubs currently helps up to 180 people per day.

“We were in total awe when we saw the amount of bags coming through the church door. The sheer amount of gorgeous and delicious things totally took us by surprise. Children, parents and teachers of Emanuel School, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.”

EMPOWHER FULHAM FC FOUNDATION

AND EMANUEL SCHOOL

PARTNERSHIP

We have launched EmpowHER – a programme designed to inspire and empower young women through sportsdriven activities with Fulham FC Foundation. The programme is centred on football – each session focuses on technical skills development, topic challenges, small-sided games and debriefs. Women’s football is on the ascendancy and our Thursday evening sessions are attended by 70 plus girls, 16 of whom are part of EmpowHER.

The EmpowHER programme is designed to be high impact. In addition to the coaching sessions, we include inspirational women speakers, 1-2-1 mentors, careers talks and educational workshops. Our aim is to inspire and empower young women to make positive life choices.

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Emanuel School is committed to instilling a sense of collective responsibility and ambition in our pupils, staff and wider community to achieve an environmentally sustainable future. We believe it is our duty to raise awareness of the challenges that our environment faces and are determined to take positive action to address these so that sustainability and environmental considerations are embedded into our everyday school culture.

The Eco committee creates ways to inform our school community about wider environmental issues as well as to celebrate the successes and positive changes that are being achieved in the move towards a more sustainable planet.

Examples of iniatives include increasing biodiversity through the Gardening club in the Eco Garden; launching an awareness campaign; hosting a ‘bike-it-breakfast’ securing the Gold TFL STARS accreditation Travel for Life; and encouraging pupils on extended

travel school trips to contribute to the carbon off-setting scheme Ecologi.

Meat Free Monday is now a regular occurrence at lunchtime. This encourages pupils to recognise, the significant contributions that eating meat makes to adverse emissions.

Emanuel has signed up to the Let’s Go Zero pledge to reduce the carbon footprint of the school. The Eco committee have launched a pop-up Refill shop in support of the initiative.
