MELODIA SENTIMENTAL Some years ago, when I was still at school, I attended a lecture by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, which was organised for students of Poznan music schools. Górecki spoke about his life and his artistic career. When he talked about his work as a teacher I heard something I knew I would never forget. He said that when working with students it became clear that being a composer is a kind of vocation, and that a vocation cannot be taught. He added that music studies might polish the talent, but would never create it. I understood this also referred to other aspects of life, and to all other professions, because it is simply not possible to produce true passion, love, or talent. Heitor Villa-Lobos is an outstanding example of this. He acquired the rudiments of his musical knowledge from his father. Later, his attempts to start regular music studies ended in a fiasco. He preferred to work on his own. As a result, his talent, diligence and passion allowed him to create the classical musical language of Brazil, but also gave him a place in the pantheon of the most fascinating and accomplished composers of the twentieth century. Today it seems impossible to overrate such works as Chôros, or the nine Bachianas Brasileiras, which display not only the composer’s love for Brazil, but also his fascination for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Five Preludes for guitar were written in 1940. Initially Villa-Lobos wrote six preludes. Unfortunately – probably during one of Andres Segovia’s many concert tours – one of the preludes got lost and was never found again. Prelude No. 1 is also referred to as the ‘Cello Prelude’ because of the melody line played by the bass strings. No. 2 is slightly flirtatious; its B section offers an interesting treatment of the arpeggio technique.

Prelude No. 3, with its almost contemplative mood, establishes a tie with the aforementioned cycle Bachianas Brasileiras. Prelude No. 4 draws on Brazilian folklore, and No. 5, with its peaceful and slightly dreamy character, is simply bewitching.

Another important work by Heitor Villa-Lobos, written in 1951 and commissioned by Andres Segovia, is the Concerto for guitar and orchestra. It was initially called Fantasia Concertante, but at the suggestion of Segovia, and even of the composer’s wife, Villa-Lobos added a virtuoso cadenza and renamed the work ‘Concerto’. It is an unusually vivid and varied piece. The first movement, Allegro preciso, sparkles with ideas and

impetuousness. The second, Andantino e andante, takes us into the world of impressionist music. The virtuoso cadenza contains various guitar techniques which were not yet commonly in use at the time of its composition. The composer refers here to his Twelve Studies, certainly one of the most innovative and fascinating guitar cycles of the twentieth century.

The third movement, Allegretto non troppo, shows the very best of both the soloist and the orchestra. It is full of energy and happy lyricism. This great tribute to the guitar as a concert instrument is not a typical instrumental concerto. It is very much a chamber piece – with all the instruments of the orchestra complementing the solo part.

The present recording concludes with the Melodia Sentimental, specially arranged for guitar, violin and orchestra by Bernard Chmielarz. This charming short piece was written in 1958, becoming part of the suite Floresta do Amazonas. It was part of the last concert programme conducted

by Villa-Lobos shortly before his death, which gives a special meaning to this piece. At present it is one of his most frequently performed works.

The music of Heitor Villa-Lobos is in many ways exceptional. It falls outside the conďŹ nes of any established form or convention. It moves with its beauty and frankness, and charms with its innovation and fresh ideas, whilst exhibiting the respect the composer has for traditional music.

Krzysztof Meisinger

Krzysztof Meisinger is a prizewinner of several national and international competitions. As a soloist he has performed in the USA, Germany, France, England, Serbia, Austria, Spain, Greece, Latvia, Poland, and Ukraine, with such ensembles as the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Amadeus Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Quartet Berlin. Krzysztof Meisinger has worked with nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians such as Marcelo Nisinman (bandoneon), Daniel Stabrawa (violin), Anna Maria Staskiewicz (violin), and Iwona Hossa (soprano), and has inspired a number of composers to write new guitar compositions. He regularly works with the music arranger and conductor Bernard Chmielarz. In 2002, the Polish pianist Waldemar Malicki invited Krzysztof to play in a group modelled on the Astor Piazzolla Quintet.

KRZYSZTOF MEISINGER Krzsystof Meisinger (born in 1984) is one of the most fascinating and charismatic young classical guitar players. Such teachers and music authorities as Bolesław Brzonkalik, Piotr Zaleski, Aniello Desiderio (Italy) and Christopher Parkening (USA) had a great influence on his artistic development. He received scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture (1999), the Mayor of Bydgoszcz (2007), the KGHM Polish Copper Foundation and the Młoda Polska Grant Programme, and has attended master classes with Christopher Parkening, Aniello Desiderio, Pablo Ziegler (who played with Piazzolla for nearly thirty years), among others.

His album recorded with the leading Polish soprano Iwona Hossa and released by Orfeus Music was nominated for the 2011 Fryderyk Awards, the most prestigious Polish music award. The present recording of music

by Villa-Lobos was made in the famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

ACADEMY OF ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS The Academy of St Martin in the Fields – one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world – is renowned for its polished and refined sound, rooted in outstanding musicianship. Formed in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, and working without a conductor, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church on 13 November 1959. Today, the Academy performs some 100 concerts around the world each year, with as many as fifteen tours each season.

In 1993, the Academy became the first and only orchestra to receive the Queen’s Award for Export.

The Academy’s partnership with its founder Sir Neville Marriner remains the most recorded pairing of orchestra and conductor and, with over 500 recordings under its belt, the Academy is one of the most recorded chamber orchestras in the world. Originally directed by Sir Neville from the leader’s chair, the collegiate spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductorless ensemble remains an Academy hallmark. This tradition continues today with the appointment of virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell as

It was clear from the Academy’s first collaboration with Joshua in 1986 a recording of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 coupled with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto for Decca - that this would be a special relationship. The partnership has grown and flourished over the past twenty-five years and in addition to a number of outstanding recordings - Romance of the Violin released in 2004 was named Billboard Classical CD of the Year and, three years later, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons reached No. 1 in the Billboard Classical Chart - their concerts together in the UK, Europe, the United States, Asia, and Australia have been electrifying. In addition to performing with the Academy, Joshua’s new role involves working with the orchestra to create its annual programme of inspirational and inventive concerts.

JOSÉ MARIA FLORÊNCIO José Maria Florêncio was born in Brazil, but holds Polish citizenship. He studied in his home city Fortaleza and in Belo Horizonte (University of Minas Gerais). Subsequently, he completed a series of master courses in his home country, as well as in New York (Juilliard School of Music), Vienna (Musikhochschule), and Warsaw (Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music) where he finished his studies in composition, conducting and music theory (class of Henryk Czyz). After he came to Poland (1985), he immediately started an active career as a conductor. He has been a guest conductor (symphonic repertoire, chamber music, opera, ballet) in nearly all the important musical institutions of Poland, as well as in many European, American and Asian countries. His performances have received general acclaim from both audiences and the critics, who, in many countries, consider him to be one of the best conductors of his generation.

José Maria Florêncio has been conductor of the Great Theatre in Łódz, director of the National Opera in Wrocław, managing and artistic director of the orchestra and choir of Polish Radio and Television in Kraków, conductor of the Great Theatre in Warsaw, and conductor of the Orquestra Sinfonica Municipal de Sao Paulo, among other posts. He has won numer-

ous prizes, including two Złota Łódka awards for the best theatre performance of the year (Verdi’s Ernani in 1992 and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana in 1993). His artistic portfolio comprises many first performances of contemporary music, including world premieres of operas such as Electra

by Mikis Theodorakis, Olga by the Brazilian composer Jorge Antunes, and Holocaust Cantata by Marta Ptaszynska. He is also a regular guest with orchestras such as the Jerusalem Symphony, Israel Symphony Rishon LeZion, Berliner Kammerorchester, and Teatro Colón.

MELODIA SENTIMENTAL Il y a quelques années, alors que j’étais encore à l’école, j’assistai à une conférence de Henryk Mikołaj Górecki destinée aux étudiants des écoles de musique de Poznan. Il y parla de sa vie et de sa carrière artistique.

Alors qu’il parlait de son travail d’enseignant, il dit quelque chose que je n’allais jamais oublier : au contact avec les étudiants, il lui était apparu clairement qu’être compositeur est une vocation, et qu’une vocation ne peut être enseignée. Il ajouta que les études musicales peuvent affiner le talent, mais ne le créeront jamais. Je compris que cela pouvait s’appliquer à tous les aspects de la vie et à toutes les professions : il n’est tout simplement pas possible de fabriquer une vraie passion, l’amour, le talent. Heitor Villa-Lobos en est un exemple frappant. Son père lui enseigna les premiers rudiments musicaux. Plus tard, ses tentatives d’entamer des études musicales régulières se soldèrent par un échec. Il préférait travailler par lui-même. Son talent, son zèle et sa passion lui permirent finalement de créer le langage musical classique brésilien, et lui assurèrent une place au panthéon des compositeurs les plus accomplis du XXe siècle. Il semble impossible aujourd’hui de surévaluer des œuvres telles que Chôros ou les neuf Bachianas Brasileiras, qui témoignent de l’amour

du compositeur pour le Brésil ainsi que de sa fascination pour la musique de Johann Sebastian Bach.

Les Cinq préludes pour guitare furent écrits en 1940. Ils étaient six à l’origine. Malheureusement, l’un d’eux fut perdu, probablement lors d’une tournée d’Andrés Segovia, et ne fut jamais retrouvé. Le Prélude n° 1 est également appelé Prélude pour violoncelle en raison de la ligne mélodique jouée par les cordes basses. Le Prélude n° 2 est légèrement charmeur ; sa partie « B » présente un traitement intéressant de la technique arpeggio.

Le Prélude n° 3, à l’humeur presque contemplative, établit un lien avec le cycle des Bachianas Brasileiras mentionnées plus haut. Le Prélude n° 4 s’inspire du folklore brésilien, et le Prélude n° 5, avec son caractère paisible et légèrement rêveur, est tout simplement envoûtant.

Une autre œuvre importante d’Heitor Villa-Lobos, commandée par Andrés Segovia et écrite en 1951, est le Concerto pour guitare et orchestre. Il portait à l’origine le nom de Fantasia Concertante mais, sur la suggestion de

Segovia et également de sa propre femme, Villa-Lobos ajouta une cadence virtuose et rebaptisa l’œuvre. C’est une œuvre exceptionnellement vive et variée. Le premier mouvement, Allegro preciso, pétille d’idées et d’impétuosité. Le second mouvement, Andantino e andante, nous emmène dans le monde de la musique impressionniste. La cadence virtuose présente différentes techniques de guitare qui n’étaient pas encore habituelles à l’époque de sa composition. Le compositeur se réfère ici à ses Douze Études, certainement l’un des cycles pour guitare les plus novateurs du XXe siècle. Le troisième mouvement, Allegretto non troppo, montre le meilleur à la fois du soliste et de l’orchestre. Il est plein d’énergie et de lyrisme heureux. Cet hommage important à la guitare de concert n’est pas un concerto instrumental typique. C’est une véritable œuvre de musique de chambre – et tous les instruments de l’orchestre complètent la partie solo.

Le présent enregistrement s’achève avec la Melodia Sentimental, spécialement arrangée pour guitare, violon et orchestre par Bernard Chmielarz. Cette pièce courte et charmante fut écrite en 1958 et devint une partie de la suite Floresta do Amazones. Elle faisait partie du programme du dernier concert dirigé par Villa-Lobos, peu avant sa mort, ce qui lui confère une signification particulière. C’est aujourd’hui l’une de ses pièces les plus jouées.

La musique d’Heitor Villa-Lobos est exceptionnelle à bien des égards.

Elle n’entre dans le cadre d’aucune forme ou convention établie. Elle

émeut avec sa beauté et sa franchise, elle charme par ses innovations et ses idées originales, tout en témoignant du respect du compositeur pour la musique traditionnelle.

ACADEMY OF ST MARTIN IN THE FIELDS L’Academy of St Martin in the Fields – l’un des meilleurs orchestres de chambre au monde – est célèbre pour sa sonorité raffinée, enracinée dans un sens musical exceptionnel. Formée en 1958 par un groupe de musiciens londoniens de premier plan et travaillant sans chef d’orchestre, l’Academy a donné son premier concert en l’église homonyme le 13 novembre 1959. Aujourd’hui, l’Academy donne une centaine de concerts par an partout dans le monde, avec pas moins de 15 tournées chaque saison.
